    As Sharnelle and Bob

Isn't Sharnelle a Lost Dogs' Home Ambassador and Bob and ex-dog?

    • +1

      Check your spelling ;)

But, this art exhibition should have been called 'Sharnelle and Bob: A Canine Conspiracy' instead.

  • Thanks got two.

Interesting use of our 8 cents a day!!

It will presumably be a freebie for the ABC. Lume is closing down in some months, so they will have done it for the publicity to keep the registers ticking until then.

  • Thanks OP got two,

        • You prefer Bob's jocks ?

          • @jv: Frankly I leave the lady garden open to the elements.

I’ve been to both the Van Gough and Leonardo Da Vinci Lume exhibitions and seen original Da Vinci’s and Van Gough’s artworks in galleries overseas. They are two different animals. The original artworks are just stunning and you are struck by the privilege of being so close to extreme talent. The Lume exhibitions are a spectacle and an immersive experience but it is a recreation rather than an original. There is also a soundscape element to the exhibition.

We live in a world where the average pleb is given access to what once was the domain of the super rich or privileged. Travel has given me that perspective. I think people should go to Lume but certainly, if you get the chance, go see as much original artwork as you can. The Last Supper in the Sistine chapel knocked the wind out of me. It felt kinetic.

Like you, I have seen a decent amount of the original art in the galleries. No argument that the original art is more impressive and impactful up close. BUT…

I went to Lume for the first time earlier this week with my kids and I was really impressed. The art is displayed together with a telling of his life (both in art and his overall journey), including some pretty profound quotes. It is also accompanied by music, with the display cleverly timed according to the musical cadence. All up, it's really well done.

The whole 'performance' takes about 45 mins. My kids (10 and 13) stayed glued to it the whole time. There's a couple of extra activities to stretch things out. I am not sure they would have lasted that long in a traditional art gallery. Nor would they have taken in as much.

As an interactive art experience, I think its great. For the casual art person, for kids or those that don't know much about Van Gogh, I think this is perfect.

Note: I am not a huge art guy, but I backpacked around a lot of Europe back in the day and visited quite a lot of galleries. It's hard not to fall in love with the Masters (and many hardly-known artists), although Picasso, Miro and any modern art can GAGF…. ;) I hear you on the kinetic feeling. I look at a Rembrandt and I feel like I am staring into the subject's soul.

I love Lume too for its immersiveness. The scale is epic and the sound scape adds to the atmosphere. Apparently Lume was started to get kids interested in art.

One of our best experiences was in Musee D’Orsay. We had a school group in front of us and they would sit down to be told about the works. It was all in French so a tad lost on us. However, we got a clear view of impressionist paintings from a distance. Glorious. Normally there are idiots looking close up or taking selfies blocking the way.

I’m not big on Picasso but we went to the Picasso museum and it made a bit more sense. He actually was a good conventional artist and went a tad rogue with cubism. We saw Valezquez’s Las Meninas in the Prado museum then we saw Picasso’s interpretation of it over 58 cubist paintings. Intriguing to compare them.

We saw the Escher exhibition in Melbourne and it was amazing. Not only the works but the staging was stunning. Some modern art is better than others. Even if you don’t like the art works the galleries can be interesting architecturally.

I find a get a but overwhelmed and saturated when I travel. So much to see and so little time.
