this might be a silly question, but does anyone know if it's possible to use uber gift cards to pay for uber one?

      • dang, thanks for the info and deal

    • Yes you can, just paid uber one today with gift card added to the uber wallet as balance.

      • Thanks. Don't know why it didn't work for me.

      • That makes Uber One student deal even more enticing if can stack with discounted GC!

    • No, doesn’t work for me

  • Terrible timing for me, my Uber One is about to end 😭

  • I bought this and forgot to put the coupon code in, somebody take my Ozbargain licence away from me..

    • Contact Giftz and they may refund you the discount.

  • I thought uber and uber eats could use the same gift cards?

    Edit: never mind, ignore me

    • Yes. I wrote in the post: (Uber and Uber Eats gift cards are interchangeable)

  • Just yesterday I bought Uber gift card at 3% discount from aglrewards. Now I see it is at 10% here. I feel devastated

Just a reminder that it is possible to change the payment method for old orders / trips to use the discounted gift card funds. I believe the option to change payment method remains a month.

So if you've ordered anything in the past month it is basically a way to get 10% back.

  • Anyone know if you can load game credit for Timezone during their double credit deals using a gift card?

  • 10% off The Gift Of Fun gift cards (Timezone, Kingpin, Zone Bowling)(giftz.com.au) Use promo code SUMMER (Range $20-$500)

This is the deal to get for stacking with the $20 voucher that Timezone sometimes gives you to do "$200 of credit for $80" deals.
Buy this gift card for $72 (using a card that gives you points and/or cashback if possible), to absolutely minmax your topups.

  • Can anyone confirm, if I can pay @ the Timezone, for the Birthday party payment?

    • You can use the gift cards to pay for the balance due at the venue on the day of the party. However the gift card cannot be used for the birthday party deposit. I rang Timezone and it's also the same for Zone Bowling birthday parties.

  • I've tried to purchase the uber card multiple times and it keeps coming up as transaction failed. Tried Paypal, GPAY, and Credit Cards but no dice.
    Anyone with the same issue?

Out of curiosity, did you use your CommBank credit card directly on the Giftz website or via PayPal?

I know it is a bit late now, but I would generally avoid using a Commonwealth Bank credit card to purchase a gift card online (especially from online merchants dedicated to selling gift cards), because Commonwealth Bank have a history of considering the purchase of gift cards as a cash advance, rather than a regular purchase. However, considering that Commonwealth Bank generally cannot see what you are purchasing, they would instead need to look at the merchant you are purchasing from to then determine whether your purchase should be treated as a cash advance. Here are some examples:

      • For a few months, Commonwealth Bank and Bankwest treated purchases from Giftz as a cash advance. Commonwealth Bank and Bankwest stopped treating purchases from Giftz as cash advances in March 2023, but obviously something has happened to change this.

      • Commonwealth Bank told this OzBargainer their purchase attempts on giftcards.com.au (an online gift card portal operated by Coles Group) during the 15% off Ultimate gift card deal were being blocked, because the purchase would be treated as a cash advance and the purchase amount was exceeding their daily cash withdrawal limit.

      • Commonwealth Bank charged this person a cash advance for purchasing a gift card from the Good Food website. If you look at my reply to that comment, you can see the reason I was not surprised this happened.

I guess Special.com.au is the only exception to this rule of thumb, because nobody on the CommBank Yello deals has ever complained about incurring a cash advance fee when taking advantage of those deals using their CommBank credit card…

      • I paid via Paypal to my CBA card, i could see a pre paid visa being a cash advance but not a Timezone gift card, average as.

      • Great response, thank you

          No worries!

I feared you used PayPal, which is the reason I asked the question.

When I made a transaction on Giftz a few months ago via PayPal, the reported MCC was 6012 (Merchandise and Services: Customer Financial Institution). The Mastercard definition for this is:

Identifies the purchase of merchandise or services at a Mastercard customer financial institution location. Such merchandise and services may include checks and other financial products, promotional merchandise, loan fees, and financial counseling service fees.

That does not really sound like what Giftz does, but that is what they were (and seemingly still) assigned. Unfortunately, that MCC also sounds like something that should be treated as a cash advance, which is the most likely reason your transaction was flagged as such. I reached out to Blackhawk Network (the operators of Giftz) to point this out, but it seems like they did not have much success in getting this changed.

If you did your transaction directly using your Commonwealth Bank credit card (or via Apple Pay or Google Pay), the MCC should have been 5947 (Card, Gift, Novelty, and Souvenir Shops), which is probably treated as a regular purchase on Commonwealth Bank credit cards.

(You can see I added this information on Giftz's MCCs to the OzBargain wiki for MCCs, but again, it is a bit late for you now.)

You could contest this with Commonwealth Bank, because you could try to argue that the definition of a cash advance (page 43) does not include "gift cards" or "stored value cards", which is the only type of goods sold by Giftz. However, my concern is that Commonwealth Bank will turn around and say the cash advance was charged based on the reported MCC (which admittedly does fall under Commonwealth Bank's definition of a cash advance).
