Seagate Expansion 3TB USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive - $100.00 @ JB Hi-Fi

919

Managed to snare one of these for $100 at Forest Hill, VIC

So the story goes like this:
Saw the other deal posted at $118.40 and decided to head to Nunawading. None in stock so the guy checked the system for nearby stores. Glen Waverley and Forest Hill were showing 4 each, so popped down to Forest Hill.

Got into the store, none on shelf so asked if they had any. He comes back with one and I asked him how much
"With the 20% off it comes down to $118.40"
Can you do any better?
"I could drop it down to $110 for you"
How about a hundred bucks?
"<umms and arghs> yeah I can do it"
Great, thanks!

Paid. Receipt attached. Enjoy!
Price beat at OW who've smartened up and dropped it to $118.40 to avoid beating it 5%

Mod: Note that there are conflicting reports on whether this is a price for a new hard drive or repackaged. Some have been able to pricematch and some haven't.

Mod: FYI: Receipts have always been able to be posted as deals. Price errors get moved to forums. As of 8PM 29/12, the information is conflicting.

Sounds fishy.. Office works are never happy to price match.

    • +2

But wouldn't JB tell them the sale price is $118.40? Because JB are not selling brand new ones for $ 100.

  • +3

Not everyone can get this deal.

You cannot price match at this price either.

This belongs in the forums. I wonder why mod's haven't picked that up yet.

  • @madturbo- please upload your Officeworks receit

  • +1

If u upload the ow receipt then more chance of price match by another ow

  • so hang on, did the staff person from JB come out with a repackaged one and tell the OP that it comes down to $118.40 and then the OP haggled it down to $100? or was it new to begin with ? i find the story highly suspicious as either the staff person tried to sell a repackaged drive off as new or the OP knew the drive was repackaged and then tried to tell Ozbargain that he got a great deal on a supposed a new drive.

ok just re-read some more of the posts, the JB staffer later said it was a repackaged drive but the OP thinks its new because he tore apart the shrinkwrap that they repackaged it in. Got it.

best run HDTune on it just to make sure lolz. might get lots of smart errors.

No, sorry. I might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but I'm by no means blunt! I'm able to tell if something has been opened or re-wrapped, particularly electronics/technology as I work in the industry! The conclusions some ozbargainers have jumped to are simply incorrect as I ripped open the shrink wrap and cut open the factory seal. Each of the power plugs were in their own individual sealed plastic bag as well. I am unsure as to why the JB staff member told the next guy it was repackaged, but I'd be impressed if they re-wrapped it after opening it without cutting the seal. Certainly would have me fooled.

I understand the skepticism given the price and what the staff member apparently said, but we're all here for a bargain and I gain nothing from wasting your time.

      • -1

        The wrapping industry?

      • -1

I just bought one of these drives at the last bargain. There is no factory seal. Just shrink wrap. I was then able to open the box without removing any labels or ripping any tabs on the box.

    • +2

…or reading between the lines, staff member has said it's repackaged to save their job and to save JB HiFi getting hammered over this. OP haggled and was lucky to get a good deal (Luck may need emphasis if it was below cost ie, a mistake). That was pretty much it. Once it was extended to others and too many tried it was very quickly game over (and has left JB HiFi sour/burnt).

With a negotiated sale price for one customer, it is always up to the seller to choose if they want to offer it to others (regardless of someone else's receipt). People should see the scenario for what it likely was and drop this before it gets ugly(ier).

  • Where can I upload photo do I need to start new thread or forum?

  • +2

This is exciting, over 1500 clicks and there's one person who's made a deal from it.

    • -1

      .

      • -1

Jokes on you buddy, I saw that. Did you actually read it yourself?

Namkclab has haggled down to $110, said this wasn't a deal, I presume he didn't use it.
Madturbo has got one price matched using the receipt.

So at the time I wrote the post 0+1=1 every day of the week.

I went to officeworks and the guy looked on the jb hifi website and said they were both $118.40 and wouldn't do it for less so I walked out. I went to Harvey Norman to pick up some iPhone cases and asked them but they didn't have the hardrive in stock.

    • So it can be done ($95). Good that someone was able to benefit from this. OW has done it again.

    • all i could say is "how da f***…"

    • +1

Nice work. People negged me when I said sometimes I get lucky and OW price match me on other peoples receipts

      • Yay! I'm 20 minutes from that store! I'll head there tomorrow and see if they will give me the same price :)

    • I'll take both receipts in and see if officeworks will match there other price :)

  • +2

I showed the guys at OW the invoice they said they don't price match using receipts as they've been stung by fake ones before but were happy to call JB and pretend to be a customer, and if they can confirm price on the receipt they will honour it which they did at two separate stores because browns plains only had 1 in stock. This price is crazy I bought a 2TB bare drive from MSY for $99 last week.

    • +4

Still don't understand how JB can confirm the $100 price when they are not even selling at that price.

  • +1

I bought this same drive model at OW for $132 two weeks ago.. Thought it was such a bargain! That was after a PM with AusPost too! Sigh, This deal makes me sad, I'm a sad, sad panda ):

  • +4

Its not solid enough to be a "deal". It may work for some, it will prob not work for many. In stores where they don't care as much/are stricter, they won't match it, where they aren't as strict, they will.
Negging because its not a real deal, its a case of you got lucky. Which is great for you! Fantastic price for you to get one at! But for the rest of us, its a very hit and miss thing, and I would lean towards more miss then hit.

I would say this would be good in the forums and I do hope that some people manage to get their hands on them the lucky devils.

  • +1

Forest Hill is my local JB! I'll be heading there tomorrow. Cheers, op :)
edit: Just read that they didn't honour it for another user there, and that it was repacked. Boourns.

  • It works out of the box if used as a external drive, but for those who want to harvest the internal drive,
    it's a ST3000DM001

To play safe it's better to buy the 2TB.

3TB needs GPT partition to work.. so far i managed to get it to work on windows 7 & linux
some how i haven't got it to work yet on windows xp yet..

    • And a Special note that there are two versions of this drive. One is made in Thailand and the other, China. The drive that comes with the expansion is made in China and has a stuck firmware of CC43 that can't be upgraded.

No biggy but just a note.

      • What does this mean? Is the Chinese one inferior? I have never updated the firmware on an external drive, should I be :s?

    • Because rubbish rubbish rubbish XP doesn't get GPT as its too old and stupid. Its 2013 not 2001.

      • +5

It's still 2012 actually. ;) XP was an excellent operating system… in its time.

  • I called up JB at Forest Hill, they claim it to be repackaged and can't do any less than 118 bucks.

    • -1

I went to JB at Forest Hill and bought it for 118.40. Not a bad deal though. Its cheaper than Amazon (USD 129)

    Hello, fellow shoppers,
I am posting to inform you that the HDD in question was in fact…. A Repack….

This user has been posting that it was a brand new stock from the back, the stock was the last on the shelf with a clear sticker showing it was a Repack.

Unfortunately the $100 pricing is not for a Brand new unit.

I have had numerous customers come in with printed out receipts and various claims that the drive was brand new which when told they have been mislead, they have been left with a wallet $18.40 lighter than they anticipated.

I am here to inform this forum and its users the truth behind this matter, as I actually sold the unit to this customer.

    Happy shopping and Happy Holidays

    • +1

Ok, so "the stock was the last on the shelf with a clear sticker showing it was a repack" yet it came from the back and 'netsurfer' claims to have seen more on the shelf later.

Also "numerous" customers came in and left $18.40 lighter than anticipated yet Nunawading (the first store I went to) looked up you only had four on the system. Again, 'netsurfer' only saw a couple on shelf.

I'm certainly not convinced who you say you are, not that it matters.

      • I think the jb store trying to minimise their "losses" (if any) hee hee..

      • I'm going to side with joequimby here and bet we won't hear back from 4TruthHurts101 again. If the item was clearly marked as a repack using a sticker, joequimby would have seen it and i doubt he'd have dragged this saga out this long.

The only other explanation is 4TruthHurts101 sold 2 units that day for $100, one was an actual repack, the other was brand new through a mistake, which joequimby received.

    • +1

When you say it was a repack - was it opened for demo purposes or a customer return who claimed it was faulty? If it was a return was it checked by seagate?

In either case did you disclose to the purchases this at time of sale or only after he went around telling everyone else?

      • The unit was purchased and returned within 14 days.
We test all returns to make sure they are in full operating/working order before we put them back on the shelves.
We clearly mark the products with a REPACK ticket and a reduced costing for customers not worried about packaging or looking to save a few $$.

The Purchaser was told this and clearly saw the bright pink label saying "REPACK"

        • At least it is better than DSE selling refurbished as brand new and didn't even bother to format it first.

    • -1

So we know you actually served the OP yesterday please describe what he was wearing?

      • +5

As you can see from the picture of the receipt there is a Sales staff ID on the top stating 30796.

Obviously you don't work in retail as anybody familiar with serving a constant stream of customers would know that remembering a specific customers attire is close to impossible.

        • You seem to remember all the other details ok. Some people have better memories than others, yours seems selective.

        • @unity1 Thanks for editing your comment.

        • +3

Whats your problem unity? Its unreasonable to think a saleman would remember what everyone was wearing who he spoke to in 1 day. Hell I wouldn't even remember a name after 10 minutes let alone what someone was wearing.

    • -1

Thanks for the explain and welcome to ozb!

    • yea im inclined to call BS on this. sounds more like OP got an awesome genuine deal then once posted the receipt with the sales guy's ID number on it someones ass was handed to them and its now full throttle damage control

dont forget OW called HN and HN admitted that was the correct price. nothing this rep is saying is adding up right. if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck and swims like a duck, its probably not a chicken.

  • +6

Whether the OP is telling the full story or if the guy is the real rep. Truth is how many ppl have managed to successful price match? Doesn't look like many. Everyone seems to be giving out a +vote cause OP got a good price for the product but seems more like an once off than a real deal.

  • -2

I'm sorry but I have to say it, best deal in the world for the OP, worst deal I've seen in my short time on OzBargain. People would have had more chance winning a meat tray at the local RSL.

  • +1

    This can be resolve easily.
The OP post the some images of the package that he tore off.

I say the REP is bullshit about the repack and is in damage control.

JB and staff are known to bullshit alot.

Just ask them to price match 5% discounts on Target ipad sales.

    • I doubt people keep the plastic wrap.

  • +2

The inconsistency to me in this thread is people went to the store later on and there were multiple SEALED hdd's with that being the case, why has the 'rep' not said he tried to offerer a sealed hdd first rather then sell a repackaged one at full price and then be haggled down in price with NO indication on the receipt (damaged, return item, clearance etc.) when the sale went through.

  • That being said, officeworks won't match a recept and HN stock a model with one letter different, it's $179 but it's exactly the same from what i can tell. USB 3.0 and 3tb, maybe it's has higher Rpm, I'm not sure but they apparently were willing to price match until he realised it was different model (STBV3000GB) or something along those lines.

So yes, unfortunately this seems more like a one off, what I want to know is at $119 is it still worth buying? Is it still a bargain price?

  • +1

    Hi guys,

I just went to havery norman Bondi to get them to match this but they had no stock but did the seagate backup plus 3TB STCA3000/300 for $100 pm me if you want a copy of the receipt.

hopefully it has the baracuda 7200 inside like ths one

He price matched the JB receipt.

    • Wow, that version is more expensive that the general seagate expansion. could you please post receipt? I'm trying to pm you, but failed. Many thanks to you.

    • Your pm is turned off, can you please allow pm's or post on this?
I managed to get this haggled down to $115 at jb, you just need to haggle, as I posted earlier HN had the different model but the guy I spoke to realised that and didn't match it, I would be interested in another especially the better drive (what's the difference?) so please post :)

  • Hi
Yes please can you please post the receipt the sale has ended and I missed out on getting the hard drive at this price

  • wow talk about hard work. I went to JBHiFi where the staff / supervisor claimed that this receipt was 'OBVIOUSLY' a forgery and looked to 'neat' to be the real thing.

He had obviously received a company memo / warning and wanted to know where I got the receipt lol.

Headed off to officeworks and they said they could DEFINITELY price match it if I could show them the better price online OR supply a receipt that is within 48 hour time frame (ie: recent).

    :(

If anyone has a recent receipt would appreciated it
