I had one of these at a previous job. They are the standard issue corporate laptop, about as interesting as a rock in the desert. Might be OK for a headless server or something.

      • Not interesting but it gets the job done I guess. If it can do your standard office stuff, it will more than suffice for a student who's reading papers, taking notes and writing essays. Battery life is something I'm a bit worried about but it should be reliable enough

Definitely. And the 32GB is decent. My one was loaded with corporate crapware, so it was sludgy and locked down. But it would be good to blow it away and install Linux.

    • So suitable for anyone with lightly threaded workloads then.

What uni level math or physics problem would an i7 with 32gb ram struggle with? Have they started asking students to run simulations of the universe?

  • A good NAS with external disk

    • -1

why would you use a laptop as a NAS?

  • i would buy it if i needed to replace current laptop now

Its a Dell. So far I have killed 3 of them from work since Jun-24.

    • +4

Then it must be you doing something wrong 😅

      • Nope. Just the quality. And these were brand new ones. The touch pad and the whole wrist support is also very unreliable making the mouse pointer going all.over the screen.

My 12 years old HP on the other hand is still going strong.

I would not touch Dell unless its XPS.

  • 14-inch, FHD 1920 x 1080, 60 Hz, anti-glare, touch, 72% NTSC, 300 nits, wide-viewing angle

    Decent colour coverage

    Battery health 70% and above.

Unless you're using 100% docked, budget $80-90 for a new battery

  • I need one, but battery life is deal breaker

  • +2

i've had good experiences with Metrocom to the point where i feel i need to mention it on any deal they post. or because so many stores i deal with seem to be a headache waiting to happen.

    • +2

Yeah, Metrocom have been great for me also. Loved the 6800XT that I grabbed and their SSD deals.

Just need a deal on a used 7900XTX from them!

  • If this is a 100% docked use case via thunderbolt 3 for primarily family use eg pay bills, watch YouTube and Web browse. Maybe occasional single core rts gaming.

Csn I get some feedback on spending 500 I'd reasonable or I won't be able to get much better spec wise at this price?

  • @MetroCom - My friend is thinking of buying this for uni. How many hours battery life can be expected on a full charge?

  • +3

If I was after a laptop for general use I would buy a refurbished one (with a minimum 16 GB RAM). I do all my work on a refurbished desktop I paid $200 for and it does everything I need
    Something like this

    • I find chrome and excel sheet will obliterate 16gb of ram. I wonder how much win11 takes up as well.

  • Mr Fortuneteller……will this CPU be compatible and run Windows 12?

  • Hi. I need it asap, going overseas on Friday morning next week, so would love it to arrive before Friday next week. I live in Brisbane metro. Is it possible?
