U2 Mini Android 4.0 Media Player (HDMI/WiFi/1GB RAM/4GB Flash) $19.55 Delivered

1510

<MOD: Please see this forum post on DX.com regarding refund>

This is proving to be a hit on HUKD - http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/u2-mini-android-4-0-media-pl…

Can't say I know too much about these but for less than 20 bucks, surely worth a punt.

SoC – Allwinner A10 (Cortex A8) @ 1.5GHZ
System Memory – 1GB DDR3 RAM
Storage – 4GB NAND flash + microSD slot (upt to 32GB)
Video Output – HDMI
USB – USB 2.0 host port
WiFi – 802.11 b/g/n
Dimensions – 9.7 cm x 4.1 cm x 1.2 cm
Weight – 38g

Running Android ICS 4.0

For those like me, who didn't really know what this does, I found this explanation from HUKD pretty helpful -

  • You do not need it if you do not have Wireless internet and TV with HDMI input.

  • It is a media player that simply connects to one of your TV HDMI connector.

  • You can insert your memory card in and it will play movies on your TV.

  • You must have at least a Mouse to use it. Better get any wireless/wired mouse from ebay etc. Plug the dongle in USB input and it should work.

  • If your TV is not connected to the internet i.e you do not have smart TV it will convert it into Smart TV. You MUST have wireless router to connect as it does not have wired connection.

  • It has Google Android 4.0 also known as Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) Operating Sytem same as any mobile or Tablet with ICS

  • Like mobiles this will not make any calls as it does not have any Antenna or place for Sim Card that connets it to mobile networks

  • It will make your TV like a mini pc.

  • How do you connect this to external audio like a stereo for movies ?

    • Hook it up to your A/V receiver first, with pass through to your TV.

Ahhh OzBargain… you will be the death of my savings account…

    • and my credit :(…

  • Bought one , why not

  • specs state - microSD slot (upt to 32GB)

is this just a published limitation in theory?

    or reality?

anyone tested it with a 64GBmicroSD?

    • I think it's because > 32GB requires SDXC cards.

I'm getting one to replace my dad's P4 PC at home..

Thanks for posting this. I love my UG802 and use it with a wireless Logitech 320 keyboard and mouse. Have fitted a 16gb micro sd card to it and connected a powered usb hub. The wifi wasn't too good until i filed a groove in the casing and hung the antenna wire outside the casing. The micro sd card slot in the casing also benefited from some filing to get the card in and out.

    • +1

can you link or take a pic of where the antenna is located?

      • +1

Just crack it open, you cant miss it. It looks like a piece of wire with a small piece of green pcb soldered to it. Its on the end opposite to the hdmi plug.

  • +2

Thanks OP……..ordered it even though not sure what it does or if i need it

    • +1

Same here. I got one too but not sure what it does. I also probably don't need since I have a Samsung Smart TV but heck $20 to muck around with a new gadget and pass some time.

  • +1

Good deal, I have been looking around for something like this.

  • Already have a Raspberry Pi but ordered anyway!

  • Cancelled my order as it does not have RCA or 3.5mm audio out.. I need to connect the audio to a stereo as my screen is a computer monitor which has no audio..

    • You could buy a AV Receiver… Although that would cancel out the savings I guess…

  • +1

just throwing it out there… does anyone know if you can upgrade the ICS

    • I want to ask the same question.

      • +1

Unlike GuitarXXX I would like the answer ;)

  • Already have a Raspberry Pi happily running XBMC.

  • no bluetooth? need one for controller goodness…

I have a PS3 and a WDTV Live which is still boxed but I want this one just in case.

    I cannot resist!

  • cool. nice find.

  • Unable to check out, keep getting error 500. Anyone else run into this?

    • +1

I got the same message. But I still received confirmation email saying my order has been placed.

Because the error page I submitted another and I received another confirmation!!

I have to ask them cancel one of the dupe and not charge me twice

      • Yep, just got the emails through then…
Looks like the payment didn't go through either, you should just be able to log on and cancel it

  • anyone know when this expires or will it stop when sold out? I only have $17 in my paypal account ~sigh~ :( and it'll take 3-5 days to transfer money from my bank account.

  • can it access my server and play files from there ?

  • How's it compare to the WDTV Live Streaming? Is the interface as good? Looks like they both perform similar functions except that the WDTV has a remote included.

    • +1

This device runs Android so you can change/choose player.

      Differences:

      • WDTV Live's USB ports provide sufficient power to portable USB drivse, this device may be limited to USB flash disk.
      • WDLXTV custom firmware opens up some cool features on WDTV Live.
      • You can play Android games using this device (assuming you buy a compatible remote or get keyboard/joystick/mouse/trackpad).
      • Web browsing should be better on this device.

At the end of day, if you intend to use this just as a media player, WDTV Live might be a better option. However, if you want to use Android on your TV, then this device would be worth considering.

      However, things to consider:

      • You can already use your Android phones or tables to stream media to a TV that supports DLNA.
      • Some TVs already support Intel WiDi and new TVs will most likely support Miracast.
      • A lot of existing so called Smart TVs can already play lots of media from either USB or LAN (and the 3D ones can even play 3D mkv, 3D mp4 files).
      • Without a touchscreen, how easy will it be to play Android games?
  • missed out sold out :(

  • same problem,
Can't seem to get it into my cart….
    can't register new acct either…

  • +1

IMO a WD TV Live is better than this.
TV Lives are much more user friendly - less problems with better support for different kinda of media. These things have all sorts of issues are are made with 1 goal in mind. To make them as cheap as possible.

    • +1

This really true? I'm wanting to return my WDTV live because I'm not that happy with it.

Isn't this way more customizable? And doesn't it have even more support for formats? I mean- the android market of app's is huge, no? Couldn't this even be used for downloading torrents?

      • WDTV live is a hardware based media player. It has a solid company manufacturing it and is very widely used. Why are you not happy with it?
These Andriod sticks are really software based media players. I cannot see how they would be as reliable. Check out some of the comments here people saying they have issues with XBMC and issues with full HD videos. Sure the Andriod is probably more customizable - if you like spending hours to get the thing working.
You would not use this thing to download torrents. Thats a PC job. The TV is used for watching movies and relaxing. Save yourself stress keep your WDTV for now - I bet you go back to it.

  • sold out :(

  • I've got 1 in my shopping cart but I can't complete the transaction…
Been trying for 10-15 minutes..keep getting error 500…
Anyone know how to get past this?

  • Does anyone know if this has the same wifi issues as the mk808? that things been useless, and I dont want another useless one.

    • Read above, a dude fixed his issues by relocating the antenna wire outside the case. Sounds like a good idea to me

  • Anyone looking for a media player with a bit more grunt can have a look at the Odroid X2.

Nice, but $135 is a far cry from $20

    • +1

For $135 you can almost get a full PC box these days!

    • +2

grab any amlogic android on a stick and you can run xbmc for android properly, less messing around… raspberry pi with hdmi CEC support is awesome tho, just use your tv remote

      • Not for $20 delivered though.

  • Out of HDMI on my TV. Anyway, will stick with my N40L as HTPC + NAS + BT machine.

  • +3

I just missed out, but I'm secretly glad.

    • AHA….

      Don't be so glad.

They are back in stock now.
      hehe….

      C'mon guys just order it.
      It is less than $20.
      What are you waiting for??

  • Sold out :(

  • +1

Avoid these tossers like the plague, months now been fighting with them about a part I returned as it was defective, only to be told the person that I gave it to doesn't works there, like yeh right idiots, i went back and made the guy i gave it to sign a paper saying he worked there.

Sent that to them and guess what they are now sending a replacement part… its cheap for a reason…

  • Back in stock.

    Thanks OP, ordered one.

  • NO way Im gonna defend my pocket!!!!!!!

  • Seems they're in stock again - or they're just taking back-orders… through ebay it comes to AU$20.22. I suspect it's going to be one of those surprise deliveries (I don't remember ordering THAT!)

  • Hohoho, it became in stock again! Just got one. Thanks.

  • Bought. Thx.
Running ICS I assume Play should work. Anyone had VMWare View working ? Could be a cheap workstation. Interesting to see how it compares to RaspPi.

  • Does anyone know whether it supports Adobe Flash in the web pages? My Android 4.0.4 phone doesn't do the job well.

    • +1

It is up to the browser that you are using, I'm using the old dolphin HD and it supports flash. Just don't update the app ….

      • Thanks.I'll give it a go.

  • Just an FYI - this is NOT the media player for you if you watch Anime - no ASS support! So subtitles will not work properly, and typesets just won't be there at all!

Also I'm assuming no 10-bit support - correct me if I'm wrong though…

But if you have some sort of remote already, and don't watch Anime then this should be perfect for you!

    • No 10bit support is not good but I thought since it runs ICS it can install video apps that can play ASS?

    • +3

Man, I fought it, I fought it but…. urrrr hurrr hurrr…he said ASS support. Good night.

  • Back in stock but unable to order one :(
Clicking Add to Cart refreshes the page and cart remains empty.
Tried Firefox and IE without success.
Also tried logged in and logged out of my account.

Tried adding the item via SKU to the checkout and i get a "An unknown error just occured." error.
    Guess i'll try again later.

  • same here, can't add to cart.

  • +1

Unable to add to cart!! may be out of stock again?? But can add other items.

  • sold out again

  • Showing as SOLD out now again

  • What power adapter do I need for this? Can I just use the USB power adapter I have for my ipod?

  • +1

For those who missed out, you can get it from eBay for about $9 more. This http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/U2-Mini-Android-4-0-Media-Player-… seems to be the same, correct me if I m wrong. I haven't dealt with the seller so BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK

    • +2

      thanx. but i saved $20…. :p

      • +1

        No worries mate, I saved $28.50 :p

  • +2

Although I didn't pickup one myself, I came across this article that might be of interest to some?

Linux distributions that can run on an MK802 Mini PC:

    • Miniand Lubuntu 12.04
    • Miniand Ubuntu 12.04 and Xubuntu 12.04
    • Toby Corkindale’s Linary 12.06 armhf build
    • Rikomagic Lubuntu 12.04
    • Puppy Linux
    • Fedora 17
  • So what is the best option for media playback ? Seems allwinner wouldnt play ball with the XBMC devs on getting HW decoding working :(

  • Whats everyones order status?
Lets hope we all get it shipped soon :)

  • fml…after days got this email from DX

      • Yes, DX people told me today when I followed up with them.

        • I got email from DX that they don't have it in stock and asked if I can cancel the order or get some other item . It didn't mention that they will have stock in 2 weeks :(

  • +3

    Have a read: http://club.dx.com/forums/forums.dx/threadid.1261177

Bad news by the looks of it but I still hope to get my shippment…

    • Well at least points to them for disclosure. Shame about the shipment.

    • Refunded or store credit?

    • It's a unfortunate that some products from manufacturers turned out to be wrong spec, but at least that they are transparent with the issue + offering quick refund.

Pity, I guess it was a pricing error.
