U2 Mini Android 4.0 Media Player (HDMI/WiFi/1GB RAM/4GB Flash) $19.55 Delivered

1510

<MOD: Please see this forum post on DX.com regarding refund>

This is proving to be a hit on HUKD - http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/u2-mini-android-4-0-media-pl…

Can't say I know too much about these but for less than 20 bucks, surely worth a punt.

SoC – Allwinner A10 (Cortex A8) @ 1.5GHZ
System Memory – 1GB DDR3 RAM
Storage – 4GB NAND flash + microSD slot (upt to 32GB)
Video Output – HDMI
USB – USB 2.0 host port
WiFi – 802.11 b/g/n
Dimensions – 9.7 cm x 4.1 cm x 1.2 cm
Weight – 38g

Running Android ICS 4.0

For those like me, who didn't really know what this does, I found this explanation from HUKD pretty helpful -

  • You do not need it if you do not have Wireless internet and TV with HDMI input.

  • It is a media player that simply connects to one of your TV HDMI connector.

  • You can insert your memory card in and it will play movies on your TV.

  • You must have at least a Mouse to use it. Better get any wireless/wired mouse from ebay etc. Plug the dongle in USB input and it should work.

  • If your TV is not connected to the internet i.e you do not have smart TV it will convert it into Smart TV. You MUST have wireless router to connect as it does not have wired connection.

  • It has Google Android 4.0 also known as Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) Operating Sytem same as any mobile or Tablet with ICS

  • Like mobiles this will not make any calls as it does not have any Antenna or place for Sim Card that connets it to mobile networks

  • It will make your TV like a mini pc.

    GoodDealMate! :)

  • These should've always been this price ages ago as you can get a 7" tablet starting from ~$50.

  • +2

Apparently this one is good if you want to have a remote - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MK808-RK3066-CortexA9-Android4-1-…

    Also mentioned on hotukdeals.

But for $20, you can't go wrong!

  • So these work by plugging into a spare hdmi port on your TV - I'm assuming it still needs the AC adaptor hooked up for the unit to turn on?

How do you navigate through menus?

    • you dont have to use a remote.

a mouse can handle everything. a keyboard will be helpful too, but i only use one wireless mouse (you also can use wired mouse)

      anyway, quite easy.

  • no doubt they are trying to clear stocks with the old A10 cpu, but don't get me wrong, the A10 was the best chip for it's price by a long shot, and was popular was the Linux mob too, it's been a good launching pad for bigger & better China chips

  • -1

Do you need to buy an extra remote to control this thing?

    • Either that or use a wireless mouse

  • +1

Good way to upgrade your tv to "smart" but yeah remote is an issue Darkstyles deal is better

  • If you put a 1080p video on one of these will it playback smoothly?

  • +2

Should be able to use ur android phone to control it.
As for 1080p it's stated. Put it this way my raspberry pi is 700mhz ARM with 256ram and just handles 1080p.
This sucker is 1.5ghz with 1gb ram. Worst case use it as a android desktop pc.
    Definitely worth the punt.

    • Thanks for this, is it easy to setup the phone as a remote, i have a Samsung s3 would it be able to control it.

      • +3

install xbmc to the device and then use the xbmc remote app on the s3..
Pretty easy setup, just follow the instructions.

        • Thanks scubacoles. Do I install XBMC on the device from Google Play or is there an external link I need to get it from?

        • Thanks scubacoles for the info.

        • +3

XBMC does not run well on Allwinner A10 devices. There is no hardware decoding available, and SW decoding sucks even at SD. 720p and 1080p are out of the question.

          http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Android_hardware
"Will choke even on some SD videos with software decoding. Generally seen as "avoid" due to development complications with Allwinner."

While the bundled player should work well, XBMC will not.

  • So, can you use this or the MK802/8 as a media player? I'm looking for something cheap to replace my WDTVLive. I assume it does not have infrared (can't see anything on specs) so you can't use a universal remote with them. Interesting idea, anyway

  • so this doesn't come with a remote then how do you control it?

    • You need a 2.4GHz wireless keyboard, mouse, air mouse

      • could you use a Bluetooth kb and mouse via a bt dongle?

        • It's powered via the USB port, so not sure how you are going to use dongle? Also, I don't know if it will pick up drivers for the BT dongle(I'm not a Android guru)

        • No its not powered by the USB port. Its powered by the microUSB port.

      • wired mouse and keyboard work too.

        • Interesting. How do you connect it up? USB hub?

        • thats what im thinking if the airplay doesnt work too well.

    • How can you control it with a phone?

  • I've got a DX media player hooked up to my tv to play downloaded tv shows, but it only takes a 16gb sd card.
    http://dx.com/p/hp31-720p-multi-media-player-w-usb-sd-av-ypb…

Can this do the same job in an uncomplicated way?

    • I've had an Android media player before and it was not uncomplicated.

      • +14

        just like that sentence!

  • AU$20.22 or US$20.50. Still a gd price.

    • +3

20.50 USD = 19.5864 AUD according to xe.com. If you use 28 degrees MC you can get very close to that.

      • +1

Paypal exchange rates. Paid at that price this morning. Not complaining, good price for a gadget.

  • Always wanted to try this thing. Ordered one.
    Thanks OP.

  • Can some one put the Android App for remote to use via phone or tablet please
Any DealEX codes to get cheaper?

    • Yes you should be able to use your Android phone/tablet as remote… the Telstra Uno for $29 is a good option maybe if you don't own a phone…

I had a quick look at the reviews - seems like the Lenovo mini keyboard is compatible
However the Air Mouse Keyboard is a trial and error - no guarantee it will work

  • unbelievable. how can they make it at such a low price/cost.

    • Human hands don't touch it for most of the manufacture process and when hands do they are paid crap wages.

  • Thanks OP - ordered one, can't go wrong with ~$20

  • Hi,

Can we keep it running (plugging into TV) 24/7 like our smartphone or tablet?

Does this one get any overheat issue? (Leads to unstable performance)

Does its USB OTG support Ext HDD with NTFS partition? As my toshiba at270 tablet only support FAT32 :(

Does it has wifi issue like other model? And is it smooth to stream youtube?

Anyone got one could u plz comment on this. Thanks!

Good price n so tempted to get one ;) Cheers

      • The review is for a uhost. This is u-host. Maybe this is a clone of the uhost? Hahaha

        • The link to review was provided in the post that the op linked to. AFAIK it's for the same device, but you may be correct… I guess $20 and 3 weeks later we might know.

  • Great price considering I bought it for $80 when first released nearly a year ago (MK802 was the original with all others being clones off the same design).

Not sure if it is the same - the MK802 was underclocked from 1.5 Ghz to 1 Ghz and was rather slow to do things on and buggy.

Anyway, for $20 you cant go wrong I guess. The only caveat is the remote will cost you on top and can be substantially more expensive than this stick!

    Droidmote server - $2.50

I'm sure there are freebie app remotes
But I'm working and researching at the same time.

Now we can throw our apple & android products away, it is now 2013 baby!

  • Bit the bullet.. Worse come worse, $20 down the drain !!

  • +1

    Buyer's remorse? urgh

  • +1

May I suggest when you guys get these maybe if you can, take the case apart and put afew holes in for ventilation as a precaution. Overheating COULD an issue.

    • just wack on a usb fan. You can pick them up for like $6. Either a blade or bladeless one will do fine.

  • +3

Worth a look, I've always wanted one of these in my laptop bag just in case.

"We will get down to fulfill your order as soon as possible."

Not sure where down is, but they're doing it.

  • i bit the bullet and grabbed an air remote too ~$44 to get my tv smart enabled is a pretty good price and considering you can very easily take this where you go

  • Wow, good find. Can this replace my Apple TV 2 with XBMC as a network streamer?

    • essentially yes because you should be able to install xbmc on this.

      • +1

XBMC does not have access to the hardware acceleration on the A10, making 720p and 1080p completely unplayable and SD done entirely in software.

It's the built in software or nothing.

    • Yes. Beta 2 works pretty good.
      http://xbmc.org/download/

  • Does anyone know if this allows me to watch the Free version of Hulu instead of Hulu+ where you need to pay for subscribtion like Netflix?

This is assuming I already have unblock-us to bypass the IP address problem.

If it can, I will order one without blinking :)

  • +1

    Is DealExtreme still very slow?

    • +2

Still waiting for a cable I ordered Nov 28.

      • Oh crap.

      • The stuff i order late Nov already all arrived. They refunded a solar powered battery pack though.. And some audio extension cable came over 1 week after my initial first shipment. 1 week packing.. and 2 week shipping. Not bad but untrackable shipments.

I'm expecting another order i made umm Dec 27th any time soon. ^^ Nothing missing this time around.

However not everything in DX is cheap you just need to be careful in waht you buy.

      • Just for the record, my USB charger cable arrived today. Posted from Shenzhen. So that makes 7 weeks. For a cable I don't mind, actually. Living up to their reputation of Delay Extreme, they are, hahaha.

        Just so you know.

    • +1

Takes at least a month for postage and getting worse.

      • Yeh traditionally shipping from DX is all over the virtual shop.

Naturally they should be able to cope with the impulsive OzB types as their site has only had 3,400 clicks from this post alone.

I might come back here in a months time as I imagine the comments will still be going but the tone may change.

I'd recommend that peeps only order 1 item and not try and fill the shopping cart with other stuff on this one.

OP you need add the following……
Is your TV a bit dumb ?
Well here is the device to make a SMART one :)

  • So it only takes SD cards you can't plug a USB HDD into it ?

  • anyone how this things play movie from a network drive? i can see it is being plug onto TV HDMI port, not sure how it is networking? wifi?

  • Got one. I watch live streams of sports on my tablet, so it'll be interesting to see how they look on TV

    • That's exactly what I want to try one for.

      • yeah, even though the tablets aren't flash compatible, a lot of streaming sites have the direct stream URL. I usually paste that into MXPlayer and voila…

        • Can it run sopcast?

        • Cool. Do you know how to record live streams?

        • I run sopcast on my galaxy s2 so should be fine.

    • +1

Edit: Found the info I needed….

  • +1

I would love one of these but will not go near DealExtreme ever again. I had to get Paypal to refund my last attempted purchase through them.

    • +4

Care to elaborate? In my experience dx are a reputable outfit but with one big proviso - speed of service.
I've never placed an individual order above $15, at which point the site stipulates purchase of a tracking number delivery. Until recently it cost a hell of alot more than the $0.01 now indicated. How much it speeds arrival , if at all, others can comment on.
They still have the biggest range and the reviews are genuine, making it still the best site on which to 'window shop', but while I still buy occasionally from dx it is only when I can't find identical items elsewhere. Where you can, buyincoins/tmart/ebay will almost always be significantly cheaper.
Biggest dissuasion for me is now the aforementioned delivery times. Last order (recent) took 1 day shy of 8 weeks to arrive. From memory, the one before that took between 5 and 6 weeks.
This deal is a great one, but don't be surprised if the $0.01 registered airmail feels more like it involves a Chinese crested chicken rather than an actual airplane.

      • The last time I ordered through them was late Jan 2012 and I received a partial shipment 5 weeks later. They claimed a delivery date of between 10-21 days and I attempted to contact them through their painful support process with no luck and so placed a dispute with Paypal which DX didn't respond to and I received a refund late March.

They did send out a generic email advising that deliveries were behind schedule because of heavy snowfall in Europe !

I thought most of the reviews were fake but wasn't really concerned.

        • 21 working days is 4 weeks and 1 day, making it into the 5th week, I've never received anything before the 4th week lol~

My last purchase took 5 weeks, they did send an email out in the fourth week asking if I have received my order which I ignored. But all my recent purchase is on the 4th week mark.

DX is not the cheapest though, you can almost always find something similar or exactly the same on tinydeal for cheaper, which I always forget to check before buying from DX…

        • Just in general terms you have to take quoted shipping times from China sites (whether warehouses are in China or not) with a grain of MSG. It's the price you pay for paying such a small price…
Product reviews on dx and meritline are by and large genuine - although not always coherent. The reviews on tmart are few and far between. Reviews on buyincoins (more often than not the cheapest place to buy), are obviously (and occasionally hilariously) fake.
The stuff you order from all of them - more often than not - arrives. Eventually.

        • mikkim4eva:
I did some maths. 21 days = 21 days. If they had said working days then I would have accounted for that. 10 - 21 days was stated. Yes I know that is a standard DX lie and might have accepted it if they had responded to my initial complaint, or my disputed claim via Paypal but they didn't think it worth their time. DealExtreme are frauds who expect a certain percentage of their customers will forget their orders were ever made. Why try to apologize for them ? lol~ not

        • +2

Not defending DX BUT this might also be the xmas postal rush which is standard for this time.

I got box from the US dated posted 18/12 the same time as one posted 27/12.

A box from China posted 12/12 the same time as one posted 31/11 both a few days ago.

I think in reality given the time that DX and other Chinese suppliers mail arrives, that while it says Airmail, it most likely to be Seamail because a ship from HongKong takes 2 weeks to arrive.

BTW ordering this product from DX says shipping is to be signed for vs the "normal" non signed for post.

    • DX is reputable, but their shipping is s-l-o-w. Expect a 6-8 week wait.

  • I guess you would need air mouse for it to operate for first time so that you can configure it with your home wifi and the free apps on the phone with the client server on the device? Does anyone know if you can operate it with USB mouse?

    • Android v3 or greater has built in support for USB keyboards and mice.

  • wow less than $20 bucks - do i really have to consider much……

    … just bought…

  • Nice price. Would top it off if it supported DTS audio.

  • +1

Sorry going off-topic. Can anyone recommend an HDMI switch? My TV only came with 2 HDMI ports, and with increasing number of devices such as this one, it's just too troublesome to get to the back of the TV every time I need to switch devices.

Those $15-$20 3-port HDMI switch on eBay any good?

  • Would a USB to ethernet device be supported by android? I dont have much faith in high bitrate 1080P over 802.iin

  • Definitely interesting….. And if this works the way I think it does I should be able to use this connected to my computer monitor via HDMI and controlled very via my phone/tablet to stream video from my DLNA enabled NAS?

Anyone know that if this is not possible?

  • Wow- I'm taking back my WDTV Live Streaming. After reading heaps of hype here, I purchased it but after a couple weeks I'm not that happy with it. I assume this thing is way smarter/more modifiable also?

  • I have the astone air mouse remote and work on a similar unit with no problems.

$34… Why not just use the MK 520 from logitech 100% cash back from 2 years ago?

      • +5

The 1.21 gigawatts (or 'jigawatts' as some people prefer) required to go back to this time and get that deal would cost most than the $34 saving.
