  • Have Coles stopped selling the meat free version ??

    • +11

      I hope so .

      • +1

        Why?

        Did you try them?

        • +2

Yes I have & found them awful in my opinion no real taste bland etc .

          • @spock: Not enough sauce then.

            • @jv: Definitely .

    • +26

      They’re all meat free really..

  • -1

do the pies come with free fingers or do they cost extra

    • pies come with free fingers

      Depends

    • +1

They don’t even have real black birds anymore.. shrinkflation hits again

      • +1

But, when the pies are opened, you'll begin to sing!

        • Australian Republican Movement lobbying that it would be too much of a dainty dish to set before the king.

          • +1

@Dr Prepper: The more you bake into a pie the less chance of a compo claim from the maid.

  • +4

Might be an unpopular opinion but I actually liked the cheeseburger pie from the "basic bitch" varieties. Shame Coles seemed to stop selling.

  • +1

Oh you legend op, i ate an $8 pie recently at costco and reckon 420 is just as good. Gonna smash a few 420!

Does anyone microwave their frozen pies upside down? I was told to do that when growing up but i don’t know why.

    • First I've heard of this. Now I'm curious too

    • +2

I flip them over halfway - helps with cooking properly and structural integrity (not as good as cooking in oven).

      • +1

Dude… I fixed the problem by getting a new microwave 😅.
3:30 without any flipping over or upside down nonsense, comes out crunchy everytime too.

        Love the LG Inverters.

        • Cool? I don't have shitty pies at home enough for this to be a problem for me lol.

Happy to chuck in the oven for 5 minutes to crisp, but that's the least of this pies problems.

    • +3

I just wrap in a paper towel, (turn the pie upside down with paper under it, then fold over the corners) flip the whole thing and nuke in the microwave like that without it being on a plate. 4 minutes on high is usually enough for one. I found if they are upside down the filling can sometimes start leaking out. Pies turn out fine like this….then open the lid and pimp it the way I want….turning into either curry pie or pepper pie, etc

    • I do, but then I put them right side up in the oven to crisp

  • +3

Have you tried Garlo's pies jv?

    • +1

      Worst pie I've ever eaten.

    • The mini 12 beef pie packs are some of my favourite pies. Fantastic.

  • Two Reps from Choice rated these pies. That’s why they’re called 4 and 20.

  • +1

Love the red rooster chicken ones.

  • +1

Haven't had these in years. Have they suffered from enshitification and reduced meat content?

    • +2

      It's horse meat

      • +2

        Nay

        • +1

          Camels arse

  • +4

The chicken ones are inoffensive and I always keep a pack in the freezer. Beef versions are just "slurry" to quote my wife. I'm not so down on them but happy wife etc…

I just make my own but am happy to admit it costs more DIY but the taste/texture is so much better, even just using frozen pastry sheets to save time.

Of course if time is at a premium then don't go there, just buy Herbert Adams (and the Aldi clones, 2 for about $6.50) or National Pies (Costco for me). Garlo's and Charlottes Bakery (Coles) are okay but nothing special. In truth, even Herbert Adams used to be better say 10 years ago when they had one pie with 30% beef from memory, now long gone.

The same applies to sausage rolls etc. Dumbed down ingredients etc. I bought one from a local Deli/Butcher today for $5, pre-cooked, just needed to be warmed etc so was expecting better than a normal bakery. It was big for sure but just seemed to use the same basic un-seasoned sausage meat and lots of it so value was good but not much actual taste. Pastry was just crap. Even the cheapest puff frozen sheet would be way better.

Edit - yes sausage rolls can be awesome, just use real (cheap is fine) pork mince and add from there e.g. garlic, onion, paprika, sage, herbs et al

    • National Pies (Costco for me).

These are at Woolies too and pretty good :)

Just saying because if "time is a premium" like 99% of Australia will have a closer Woolies than Costco lol

    • +2

      National Pies

PS: National Pies was just acquired by Patties Food Group, so the taste may change in the future.

    • Your wife is bang on the money. Beef pies are basically just gravy.

You make your own? Thats rad. I've wanted to do that for so long, but never found the time (or had the freezer space for 20+ pies). I've got to work out how to make the pastry, as Mum used to make pasties but she always used the pastry sheets (which, it turns out, are now made with oil not butter)

Does anyone ever pay $9 for these? That's ridiculous pricing.

    • +1

I paid $6.40 for one at the MCG a week ago

    • I saw them at wools a few days ago like $6ish…

    • Charlotte's bakery 2 pack is $12…so these 4 seems cheap[

  • -3

Judging by the positive response, I might need to go into my local store the night before the offer starts and hide all the pies in the beauty aisle, just like when there's gift cards on promotion.

  • Actually a good price

  • +1

Are there any premium pies available widely any more? Feels like all have been subsumed by the Patties trotters-and-floor-dust borg.

  • air-fry these suckers with a bit of water in the base (not touching the pie obviously) - just like from the bakery.

    • why water in the base?

      • +1

in the base of the air fryer…..Keeps the bottom of the pie from gonig too hard, and lets the top get nice and crispy!

    • How long and what temp do you suggest in the air fryer please.

  • I love the chichen ones!

  • +1

Should be the normal price. these have increased so much recently it is riduclous.
Atleast Aldi still has cheap pies and the quality is just as good if not better.
