Legend, thanks champion, will use this on all the US news sites

    • +29

They still have news in the US?

      • +14

they call it “news” but most people realise it’s just pretend.

        • +9

          Just like wrestling.

      • +2

Yeah for some reason they do and its hilarious to read, like its borderline comical.

      • +4

        Are you not entertained?

    • Can we use this on smh for example?

      • i find once you've accessed it once and return, the paywall returns after one article.

        • Oh so can only use once per site

    • Just curious is that like world news? Or just news relating to usa

  • +4

has saved me so many times

  • +27

Have been using https://12ft.io/ which pretty much does the same thing

    • +12

If that doesn’t work for stuff like the AFR - try removepaywall.com/(url_here) and click through options 1-5 until one works

      • +4

        Removepaywall.com chrome extension is great

    • There used to be an iOS safari appsheet shortcut fornthis

  • A fare amount of time it Archie's the paywall as well :(

    • +1

I've hit that issue too, same with 12ft.io

  • +1

    I’ve always used archive.md

I wonder if they’re the same

    • Yes. archive.ph is another

  • Epic, thanks OP
    Bookmarked this

  • Been using this for years and its great. Sometimes it goes down or has issues.

ChatGPT will also get the article and summarise for you as a backup (or possibly faster) option.

    • What? Can you pass ChatGPT a URL and it will bypass paywall and give me the content?

  • +13

You can also use "Bypass Paywalls Clean for Firefox". Had been working great for me

    • how come i can't find this

      • +16

        https://gitflic.ru/user/magnolia1234
Also, before @jv comments on the .ru, was hosted on github here https://github.com/bpc-clone?tab=repositories before being taken down, so moved to somewhere where it wont

        • yeah this is where I get it from too these days

        • I'm still using this too.

        • This is the way

        • Thanks people. It works. Just translate page to english and follow instructions. Changed my default browser to Firefox

      • Not on the official addons page, of course, so you have to get it from github, can't remember the exact instructions to get it installed, but once it's done, it updates automatically. Also works on firefox mobile

    • +4

Just noticed that there is Firefox extension for the website: Archive Page

    • Some news sites seem to have stopped working for me this way.

      • Make sure you have it on autoupdate for rules

    • -1

I use a custom filter with ublock origin. One less add on.

      I think it's this one.

      https://github.com/liamengland1/miscfilters

      • what are the instruction to install?

        • +4

Go to ublock origin, open the dashboard, filter list and import custom list. Add the following.

          https://github.com/liamengland1/miscfilters/blob/master/anti…

It doesn't do everything but smh and similar sites. I also use https://www.removepaywall.com/

          • @Caped Baldy: I appreciate the tip (and installation instructions!) but it doesn't seem to work for me.
It gets added to my custom filters list, but it appears to be a blank file (clicking the eye icon opens a blank page), there are two icons saying "out of date" and "a network error prevented the resource from being updated". And that's followed by "0 used out of 0".

I don't think the error is my end because I have since added the github.ru filter (from this topic) and that doesn't have the error icons, and says "1,047 used out of 1,051"

This is the GOAT for me. Always works, even for my android

  • +1

    Thanks mate

  • It asks for further configuarion. What do you do from there?

  • +1

This is genuinely one of my favourite websites that I use daily. Helps to get around the paywalls that block half the news articles on my feed! Highly recommend.

  • +1

Cheers. How dated it is a day or so? Looked up.smh and the Australian….

    • +1

I have noticed that US websites are archived almost immediately. But Australian sites can be a hit or a miss.

But you can ask it to archive it and it will queue the URL for you, and depending on how busy the server is, it can take some time.

  • you can ask for the archive to be created pronto

    How?

Still a 'Bypass Paywalls Clean' fan, but this could be call though

    • +1

Bypass Paywalls Clean has been removed from GitHub. DMCA take down.

I will google to see where else can I get it

    • +3

Care to explain….I didn't quite catch what you are trying to say….

      • i can tell your new here. just ignore any comments related to politics.

    • +1

this is not tin foil hat speak but (conspiracy about literally all the news organizations colluding)

A slightly more modern update to starting a sentence with "I'm not racist but"

    • You stopped following news because you want…more bad news? That sounds genuinely sociopathic.

    • +3

ever since the Ukraine and Gaza wars, I’ve lost respect for literally EVERY news outlet

The pandemic didn't do that for you?

  • +4

Does not work for The Australian pay wall.
12ft has been useless for many pages.

  • +1

I'm not sure I'm doing it right. I tried it on a CourierMail article and it just say "Error 404 not found"

    • I am trying the Musk/Trump news story …. it is working but is taking a long time

    • same for me bro

  • +1

Used to work for me in the early days, now as it's so much more popular and I try to archive a new article - it puts me like 10,000+ in a queue and never finishes, ends in 404

  • Wait this is legal?

  • How about brave browser ?

    • It's based on Chromium so the same instructions should work if you are referencing Bypass Paywalls Clean.

I get that paywalls can be frustrating, but it’s worth thinking about why paying for news is so important especially in the context of democracy. Quality journalism isn’t just about convenience or curiosity, it’s a cornerstone of a healthy, functioning society. Free and independent media hold power to account, investigate corruption, amplify marginalised voices, and inform the public so we can make decisions based on truth, not spin.

When we choose to bypass paywalls, we’re not just skipping a fee, we're chipping away at the already fragile financial foundation of credible journalism. Unlike social media algorithms or clickbait sites, reputable newsrooms invest in fact-checking, legal review, and deep investigative work. That work requires time, skill, and funding.

If we want to live in a society where truth matters, where leaders are scrutinised, where public institutions are held accountable, and where citizens are informed rather than manipulated, we need to support the people doing that work. Paying for news is part of that responsibility.

If I have to pay a subscription I do not want to see any advertising including sponsored news articles. Unfortunately from my experience they charge you a subscription and want to make money off advertising to you. Either choose a subscription or advertising model. The days of buying a newspaper full of paid adverts are dead, the business model needs to adjust.

      • +1

In that case isn't it more suitable to use an ad blocker instead of circumventing the paywall?

        • No, I'm happy to support through ads, not through cash

      • +2

imho it's very high, maybe unreasonable standard.
even 30 years ago, with hard copy paper subscriptions, there was advertising.
Different papers have always found a different balance to this problem - usually higher quality having less and filtered advertising, cheaper tabloids having more advertising.
not many have been without advertising.

        • +1

See my comment below about the guardian. Very minimal advertising, clearly labelled and no pay wall.
Personally think they have the balance right on the model.

          • @valkeris: I never thought I'd see guardian and balanced used in the same context.

    • +14

I didn’t beg you. I plus voted you because I like different opinion. That said… Bypassing news paywalls can be seen as a way to ensure equal access to information in a world where knowledge is power. When critical news is locked behind paywalls, it creates an information divide—those who can’t afford subscriptions are left uninformed or misinformed. In times of crisis, elections, or social upheaval, access to trustworthy journalism should be a right, not a privilege. While journalists deserve to be paid, the model must evolve to balance sustainability with accessibility. Until then, bypassing paywalls can be viewed as a form of digital civil disobedience in pursuit of an informed society.

      • -1

Ideally, a subscription should mean a cleaner, more focused experience. But the reality is that most news organisations are struggling to stay afloat, and the dual model of subscriptions and advertising is often what keeps them alive.

That said, I don’t think bypassing paywalls is the answer. When we justify it as civil disobedience, we’re still consuming the work of journalists, editors, and photographers who rely on those paywalls to get paid. It’s not just about supporting a flawed business model, it’s about valuing the work itself. If we believe access to reliable information is essential, then we should push for broader solutions, like publicly funded journalism, library access to news, or tiered subscription models, rather than undermining the current system altogether.

The business model does need to evolve, no doubt. But until it does, I’d argue the best way to protect access to trustworthy journalism is to support it, even when it's imperfect.

        • +8

I like the way the Guardian does the funding model. The website has some advertising but not in a way it impacts the experience on the site.
          Sponsored articles are clearly labelled.
You can contribute financially as either a one off payment or subscription to support the journalists.
It's not in your face, not locked behind a pay wall and those that can pay can do so.
The AFR can go get stuffed with the way they do it.
