China Southern is a 4-star airline and hubs through Guangzhou, China to a ton of Asian destinations, including Japan.

These are the best dates I've found, but if the dates you want aren't there, try them anyway as I can't search every single combination!

Also compare with Air Asia to Osaka from $269 one way, Tokyo from $205 and Seoul from $259.

Summary:
Sydney to Tokyo (1 May - 10 Dec) from $798 return
Melbourne (Tullamarine) to Tokyo (1 May -10 Dec) from $765 return
Brisbane to Tokyo (1 May - 10 Dec) from $783 return
Sydney to Osaka (1 May - 10 Dec) from $769 return

Also compare with Singapore Airlines from all key Aus ports to Tokyo, Osaka or Fukuoka although these were a while back, so some prices may have changed on certain dates/routes.

  • I'm trying to book flights to China in Oct/Nov. Is there a reason why on your flight calendar it shows flights on dates with prices around ~$450 but when you click on those dates, there's no flights at that price?

China Southern is a 4-star airline

    Not if you’re a monkey.

China Southern Airlines was previously also ordered to pay $14,438 for AWA violations during one transport that left more than a dozen monkeys dead after they went without food and water for an extended period of time

Not the type of business I’d want to support.

      Like your principle. Icymi: https://www.smh.com.au/national/qantas-apologises-after-dog-…
      Add Qantas to your list

      • One domestic dog being killed by mistake is not the same as

In 2013, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) found the airline had transported more than 1,000 monkeys into the United States through the arrangements of Air Transport International, without federal permission to do so

        • Lol the vote downs. Mind telling me how you down-voters are cool with this airline illegally smuggling 1000 monkeys into another country and killing some of them?

          • @PainToad: ozbargain owned by you know who now mate.. like reddit.. they control the matrix

            • @effraye: You'd think not being in favour of illegal animal trafficking and killing of monkeys would be a universal disliked activity.

  • What is the cheapest direct flight Melbourne to Japan (anywhere) with a decent airline one could expect around Sep/Oct when possible sales happen?

    • Sep Oct is not peak. hold your breath. I will not be paying more than $800 return.

  • Worst budget airline ive used

    • Don't ever touch Philippine airlines then, china southern beats them handily.
Funnily I was just this deal to say out of the 3 airlines I've flown to Japan on, china southern was the best. versus PA and Vietnam airlines.
Not to say i enjoyed the flight in the slightest. But as a 190cm relatively muscley dude none of these asian airlines will ever have large enough seats so not much i can do without spending like 2x the price.
