$2.80 for the 1.5KG quick OR rolled oats at Woolworths (100% Australian & everyday price) Is paying more for less but in a cardboard box worth it?

I would normally share your thoughts entirely. However, based on experience (with the 2 min quick variety), I can tell you that the uncle tobys brand is simply better. Smoother, softer, just better.

I wish I could go the Australian route but the product is, unfortunately, inferior.

      • +2

Just can’t beat Uncle Tobys for taste. Are they not Aussie???

        • +5

          Owned by Nestlé

        • They're an Australian company yeah, but got bought by Nestle in 2006.

        • +2

          Aussie produced but American owned

          • +4

@Wolfenstein98k: Nestlé is actually Swiss, not American, but yes foreign owned now.

            • +1

@jwh: Nationality aside. We can all agree that Nestle is also one of the world's most evil companies, still.

In this day and age with the competition, that's saying something

        • I agree. They are much better than anything else, especially the cheaper stuff.

The OP deal from Amazon is for rolled oats.@vid_ghost, for rolled oats there's no point spending more, especially if they're slow cooked/soaked.

        Coles has 1.8kg for $3.50 (19c/100g)
        or 0.9kg for $2 (22c/100g)

Both are products of Australia and Coles is, of course, Australian.

        • OP mentioned quick oats also, as did I, specifically.

          • @bboz: vid_ghost mentioned quick oats. rickb's deal (this deal) is only for rolled oats. I'm trying to prevent the conversation being derailed to quick oats.

            • @sween64: My response was to vid.

I'm trying to prevent the conversation being derailed to quick oats.

              Seriously? 🤦‍♂️
I'm sure we can manage without your guidance.

        • Did you even bother to read my post? Both rolled and quick are the same price. i listed both in my post i even put in links to prove it

SO NO! my post is about rolled outs and quick oats. OMG if people spent a few minutes reading something they can save so much time.

          • @vid_ghost: Yes, I read your post. Did you read the deal post?

            Quick 2-minute oats are excluded.

      • I got heaps of Uncle Tobys last time they were on sale at Amazon and wont buy them again. I find them a slimy mess - no structure.
Aldi/Colesworth are better imo. Matter of taste.

I tried the home brands some years ago. They are coarse and, not as smooth as the Unclue Tobys or Red Tractor product. My guess is they are processed differently to make them softer and smoother.

Uncle Toby's oats are sourced in Australia as are the home brands so it's got to be the way they are processed.

      • +5

Uncle Toby's also has certain minimum quality standard in regards to the raw oats they purchase. My family grew oats when we had farming land and there were certain standards for the crop to meet UT's standard such as maximum moisture content, etc. Home brands may have different (lower) standards. Price the co-op paid us was based on these standards. Higher the moisture lower the price or we had to blend it with other oats to average out the moisture content to be below the maximum.

    • Seeing how Homebrand food products are made, I normally wouldn’t buy them no matter how cheap they are.

      • how so?

        • +1

I’ve been working in the food industry for about 10 years, and I know how some home-brand products are made and in which factories. From a marketing perspective, they say it’s about cutting costs in packaging, but if you look closely, it’s more about quality checks and even differences in recipes. There’s a reason behind pricing, especially when it comes to food.

I'm usually a big fan of equivalent homebrand products, but this isn't one item where you're not in the same ballpark.

recently I had oats for breakfast 30 days straight for breakfast before fasting, ran out of uncle tobys halfway through the month and tried the woolworths oats thinking it would be the same. huge difference, final product would be kind of watery whereas the uncle tobys would be creamy. had to switch back to uncle tobys a few days later as it just was nowhere near the same texture

    • It's fine if you soak it up for a few hours and preferably overnight. It becomes creamy and retains heat much better without exploding in the microwave. Oats need time to absorb the water content.

  • +7

Uncle Toby's oats are one of the ones where there is no 100% substitute with a homebrand.

I used Aldi's oats for 2-3 years before trying Uncle Toby's, and now I will never switch back.

Aldi is maybe 0.5% husk that is unchewable that you have to spit out. Never had an issue with Uncle Toby's.

    Toby's is also creamier.

    • Rolled or Quick Oats? How do you usually prepare them?

      • Interested to follow. I've been doing overnight protein oats (milk, yoghurt and protein powder) with the Woolworths brand ones and if the brand names are significantly better I will switch but not sure if it makes a difference for overnight oats.

  • +3

Uncle Toby's Traditional Oats are definitely smooth & creamy, but Red Tractor are a class above.

    • Thanks for the tip, never heard of them before. $5/kg at Coles, I wonder if they ever go on sale.

      • +2

Never 50% off. Maybe discounted by a $1 or so.

  • +3

    Nestle 🤮

    • Yes, a sad fact of life. Good oats or good principles? Pick one 😬

  • +1

Have been using the Aldi brand to make overnight oats, the comments in this thread prompted me to give Uncle Tobys a go, ordered - thanks everyone.

    • +1

SAME here.. I'm going to try them again.. I've tried them before a long time ago and didn't think much of it.. but i also didn't care at the time. :) its just boring oats after all

    • +1

I'd love to hear your review after comparing the two.

      • +1

        Will let you know.

  • My toddler can taste the difference. These oats or NO oats for him hahaha

  • Coles has same deal, but local, no delivery, no waiting, and even better, Coles Brand bag is half that price.

  • Half price again
