What's Your Daily Coffee Fix?

Hi guys, Coffee lover here – often scouting for deals as I find it insane to pay $6-$8 for a Large Coffee these days.
Here are some of the ways I save on my daily drink. But most of these deals are no longer on offer.

  • [Ongoing] $3 Large Coffee at Hungry Jack's (ongoing offer and also a prize in Shake N Win)
  • [Occasional] Free Medium Coffee at Hungry Jack's
  • [Ongoing] Free Coffee at Maccas with Reward Points – 3,000 points for Small, 4,000 points for Medium, 5,500 points for Large
  • [Occasional] $5 credit at Soul Origin, which you may use to redeem for a Regular Coffee
  • [No longer available] Free Small Coffee at Hungry Jack's (Shake N Win prior to 10:30 AM), but has now stopped since Feb'2025. Last redeemed by me on 31-Jan-2025.
  • [No longer available] $2 Medium Coffee at Hungry Jacks (yep,I know, but can't complain at this price point). Plus, each coffee gets you a loyalty stamp and you get a Large Coffee free after 4 stamps (yes, the free one can be redeemed for Large)
  • [No longer available] Occasional Maccas offers: $2 Medium Coffee, $3 Large Coffee (but they've stopped since Monopoly 2024. It used to be back once Monopoly ended, but it hasn't)

What's the way you save on your daily coffee?
P.S.: I know I can well make it at home as well, but I'm more so asking when I'm out and about, in the mornings or evening.

In WA, the Shell fuel stations have insanely great coffee for $3.

I am addicted to this coffee I can make at home with a cheap Stovetop Espresso Maker: https://www.coles.com.au/product/dc-coffee-ground-darkness-2…

i head into work for free coffee
sure it costs 15 bucks in public transport, 25 for lunch, extra 2 hours of travel time

    but its freeeeee coffffeeeeee

    does taste like sewer water
so usually get one at the coffee shop down stairs for 5 bucks

Let me guess, you're in Sydney.

      QLD it 50cent for PT

    • if $25 lunch is serious you are aware of the kitchen in your home, right?

      • Easy $25 for a grown man with a standard appetite if no snacks were brought into work. Barangaroo food court is overpriced, and often dry AF

1kg of quality roasted beans from a reputable independent local roaster is about $60.
I use 18g per coffee (a strong double shot) which makes it (rounded up) $1.10

120mL of milk (I buy the extra creamy stuff that is about $5 for 1.5L so 120mLis about 40c)

Coffee machine in the time to power up, pull the shot, steam the milk.. uses about 500W of power either on free solar or off peak rate of 21c/kWh so about 10c

$1.60 and better than any HJ/Servo/Macca's garbage, and as good as most local coffee shops.

Actual coffee machine cost is obviously an investment expense that 100% is definitely used in an office and definitely can be completely written off over time right….

    • +6

      $60

I went through a few bags of $60 beans from a small batch boutique local independent (he’s literally 10 min from me and I get it literally like within the week of roasting), Aldi beans, lavazza beans, campos beans, and currently on lime blue… I think my sweet spot is the $30 ish delivered lime blue ones so far.

      • +1

I agree, my taste buds (and/or maybe my coffee making skills and set up) isn't up to where the $60/kg beans taste 2x better than the lime blue. I will occasionally buy small coffee bean bags from interesting or nice cafes out and about.

Last one I bought was from Toby Estate at the cafe in Sydney named "world best coffee". I honestly thought both the coffee from the store and the beans were good but "best coffee" idk… Wonder if any other ozbargainers had the same thought

        • Honestly they gotta start putting an * everytime there’s a claim like that right

It’s like the carvery I always walk past at work that says best burger in town! … I’ve tried it three times and three times it was ‘ok’ at best, and absolute slop at worst. The chips went ok though, I think the secret is just the right amount of over used fry oil and drown it in chicken salt personally

        • +1

It wasn't the world's best Coffee, Toby Estate in Chippendale was awarded world's best coffee shop (café).

The rankings were determined by a combination of public votes and ratings by an expert panel who judged each café based on factors, including coffee quality, barista experience, customer service, innovation, ambience, sustainability practices, food offerings and consistency.

Without knowing the weightage of each factor, I would hardly use it as a metric for good coffee. Honestly I rather Ona in Canberra or Proud Mary's in Melbourne for great coffee.Toby Estate just did not do it for me coffee wise.

The one I tried recently that blew my mind was the Yunnan Catimor from Manta Ray.

      • Glad you tried them ;-)

    • +8

The ATO just called. They want to come around your place for a cuppa.

    • +5

Your power cost is likely to be far less. Although it might use 500W of power, it does so for a very short time (heating the water/steaming) as the grinder power and other power is likely to be non-significant. So even at worst case assuming your machine is heating up at max power (500W) for 5 minutes = 0.083 hours.

      Your electricity consumption can be calculated by 500W x 0.083hr = 42Whr = 0.042kWhr.

At 21c/kWhr, the cost of your electricity is given by 0.042kWhr x 21c/kWhr = 0.875 cents, per coffee

      • +1

My e61 based coffee machine uses about .35kwh to make two flat whites each morning (power on to power off about 30 minutes). So your calculation for me is out by a factor of 10.

        • Your coffee machine sounds massively oversized for the home.

My coffee machine is 24Wh and takes five minutes.

          • @Pussqunt: '24Wh and takes five minutes' ? - a light bulb power and five minutes ?

my first guess was Nespresso capsule but AI told me 'Nespresso machines typically use between 900 and 1500 watts of power'

            if it takes 26 seconds like I saw some video, then 900W for 26 seconds = 900x26/3600 = 6.5Wh

so okay sounds feasible, your coffee making uses 4 times as much power as a Nespresso (which I don't like BTW - 'woody' taste = stale, weak, nasty to me)

            • @Hangryuman: Yes. Pod for 1 minute (30s to heat, 30 second to extract), low power frother/heater for four (use it twice to get volume).

Only thing I don't like is the milk turns to cheese if not poured promptly after frothing (frother residual heat cooks the milk). Tastes better than half the cafe coffees I buy, it's quick and clean up is a quick gentle scrub, not 5 minutes of high school chemistry.

      • +1

I was probably a bit tongue in cheek with the whole thing but yeah, actual power cost is negligible per drink.

My point that I poorly tried to make is that for less than the price of McD-711-servo I can make a FAR superior cup at home.

Obviously if we get into the details there’s cost of the grinder as well, time, learning, water (and filtration), maintenance etc etc.

If I’m going to get a cup of coffee ‘outside’ I will rather pay extra to a specialty local cafe rather than look for the cheaper deals…. very un-OzB I know.

        • +1

'My point that I poorly tried to make is that for less than the price of McD-711-servo I can make a FAR superior cup at home.'

sure - 90% of the coffee I drink I make at home (filter paper, Aldi single origin) but the OP was 'I know I can well make it at home as well, but I'm more so asking when I'm out and about'

    • -1

Add depreciation of your coffee machine and grinder and shit gets expensive real fast.

      • +1

Yes. Kind of a glaring oversight to ignore the biggest expense - the machine itself.

        • -1

but hey - a $2000 coffee machine makes a great vanity statement - way to totally impress yourself - and if your surplus disposable income is in the $'0,000's - why not pony up for another shiny new piece of crap you'll toss out next time you move ?

      • Got my De'longhi Primadonna, bean to cup from Gumtree for $400, it has already delivered ~4,000 coffees over few years of ownership. So depreciation covered.

    • No microplastic involved in the process ?

    • Try Lime Blue Coffee - they often have fresh beans on sale - some great single origin there, great rotation…
Now I always buy their coffee, around $35 per 1kg is an awesome deal!

  • +3

Make a coffee at home and take it with you in the mornings, don't drink coffee in the evening because it'll disrupt your sleep.

I bought a small Sunbeam espresso machine at the start of the year and use the cheap woolies coffee grounds, $4.50 a bag and haven't paid much attention but it probably lasts me 3 weeks per bag. After 4 months it's already paid for itself and the biggest expense at this point is the milk.

              • @jv: There is an irony here I can't quite out my finger on…

          • @hamza23: Yah, all the Aldi coffee lines increased recently. I think is now 14.99 / 16.99 / 26.99 for dark / medium / luxe.

I like to drive fast, doesn't mean I need a premium car to do it in.

    • Don't be a snob

  • Make cold brew at home. 130g of whole bean coffee lasts me about a week.

  • Have a V60, kettle and grinder in the office. The 700ml Zojirushi thermos can hold more than enough coffee for a day if I need to be on the move though.

Generally go through about 750g of beans a week.

    • Ooof 750g for one person??? Gotta bump my numbers up!

      • Unfortunately so, but admittedly about 1/3 of that is decaf.

    • Damn and I thought my 1kg / 2 weeks was crazy

  • Lavazza Espresso Barista Perfetto Coffee 100% Arabica, in my 40% off OB deal on DeLonghi Automatic Espresso Machine. 100x better than the coffee out of most shops and saves a fortune.

  • Bushells Coffee is currently our favourite.

    • Dunno about the coffee haven’t tried but bushells tea bags was a stand out for me, and dilmah.

  • Drink 2 x LOR capsules + 2 to 4 cups of moconna instant daily. All with milk.

  • Got a toyota? Every few months the mytoyota app gives a free ampol coffee with any fuel purchase… pretty specific but one to add to the list for takeaway. I drink an easy-to-please weak flat-white style so as long as it vaguely tastes like a nutty coffee flavour, isn't burnt or watery, and is filling, don't mind the taste. It's nice to have a free beverage when it works out. Haven't yet paid >$5 for a coffee since these inflation years, can't bring myself to!!

OP, doesn't sound like you're a coffee snob- download Ampol app and there's a $1 coffee offer valid till July'25(redeemable once/24 hours).

Nespresso pods, sometimes Nespresso, sometimes supermarket ones, but they are more miss than hit. Find the Campo's ones the most interesting out of the supermarket ones.

For me, right now, it's all about convenience. A small footprint, little effort and an OK coffee is 2min or so.

    More a tea drinker anyway.

    • Came back to say this was a great shout out for Campos pods. Bought it because of this recommendation. It's now my favourite. Now just need to time purchases during sale time.

  • Aldi Alcafe Aroma Classic Instant Coffee at home. Iced in summer, hot in winter. Come to think, I don't think I've ever paid for take away coffee. Sometimes when I've had enough points, I've got something from Maccas McCafe, and come to the conclusion that that at least it's not something I'd be willing to actually pay for.

  • Personal make coffee at home have coke no sugar out and about cheaper then coffee now

  • +1

I have a De Longhi Eletta Explorer titanium and use Lime Blue Coffee beans of various kinds. I have 4 "to go" insulated cups which i use if I know I will need coffee during the day.

I never buy outside coffee from anywhere anymore unless its out of sheer desperation as every coffee I get tastes like bitter crap compared to what i take with from home. Sadly I have had to buy maybe 4 or 5 in the past year from shops and they have all been disgusting.

    • Do you use preset options for your coffee or dial in the a custom one?

      • +1

It's a fully auto machine. I can choose strength, change the temperature with 3 choices and choose the grind. It's good enough for me.

I'm not one of these coffee snobs changing 50 settings and checking the bean velocity to the earths gravitational pull etc

I've been doing various pour overs (chemex, v60, most recently the clever dripper) for quite a few years. Have always found it hard to have the time to consistently grind beans, make coffee, clean up etc before rushing out the door in the morning and hence has largely become a weekend routine.

Making my own cold brew has changed that for me. Make up 1.4L concentrate in the toddy from 250g beans on a Friday night (14 hours brewing) and I have coffee on the fridge ready to go all week. Can top up with boiling water if desired as well. Best effort to taste ratio and I because I drink it everyday and do actually save money from cafes!
