Free 60-Day Trial (Payment Information Required) @ Shudder (Horror Movie/TV Streaming Service)

1000
CLOWN60

It's been awhile since Shudder has had a free code. Using this code gets you a free 60 day trial at Shudder. You need to provide credit card details but you can just put in a prepaid card to protect yourself. You can cancel straight away and keep the two months trial. To be on the safe side, I changed the subscription from the annual to a monthly when signing up, so if they did stuff up the cancellation, you would only get charged for a month.

Shudder is a horror-themed streaming service, and so lots of horror and thriller movies, TV shows and podcasts. The Australian service has less titles than the US version, but you can use a VPN to access the US version.

      Yep, it's in OP's post.

I loved horror all my life and keep watching lots of movies but I am disappointed most of the time, maybe the hype on some movies somehow creates too many expectations. It's like everything has been done and it's impossible to create a new genre like for example The Blair Witch started the found footage, Spielberg started the threat from the sea with Jaws, Friedkin starting the demonic possession trend and so on.

    • +22

There’s new genre. Disney’s cgi. That’s a whole new level of horror.

      • Disney is killing our nostalgia… in strange and grotesque ways…

    • +7

Gotta look deeper, there's more quality horror films these days than ever! What are some of your faves? I'll try recommend some for ya.

      • +4

        waiting for your recommendations ✱

Damian Mc carthy is a recent Irish director. Caveat and Oddity.
more recent ones. The Void, Mandy (artsy movie), Possessor, Hellraiser (2022), Antlers (only on disney 😐), The Substance, Alien Romulus.
I actually can't remember Sinister (2012) I don't know why (that's not good right) but it is recommended. Bone Tomahawk is worthy mention even though mostly off genre. Antiviral (2012, Brandon Cronenberg).

if you want anoldun butta goodun, Jacobs Ladder (1990), Videodrome, I think The Ring with Naomi watts (2002) had a tough time because everyone compared it to the foreign original, I thought it was good and scary when I watched it. The Thaw (2009, Val Kilmer) I remember as good.

on my watchlist. In a Violent Nature (new, it's on Shudder - entire movie is following a third person the killer), Double Blind (on Primevideo), Swallowed (Primevideo). Society (Prime, old body horror).

Aussie mention, You'll never find me.

Foreign: Martyrs (2008, Pascal) mentioned in a comment below is also one of the greats, it satisfies a bigger group with jump scares, gore, and disturbing themes wrapped up in great story. The Audition (1999, Japan). if you want something primal original and out there, watch The Untamed (2016, Mexican, Spanish).

also note: Martyrs and Bone Tomahawk get censored on some streams. and maybe some of the others I mentioned but these two are ones I can confirm myself.

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: one more worthy mention. Suspiria (2018), again I think unfairly judged because the original was so "iconic" and I might get nailed to the wall for this but I watched the original after and I thought the remake was better. 🤗 idk just the build up (tbh original build up was pretty good too), the aesthetic and the ending was just more intense and powerful. I have deliberately not watched it for maybe 2 years now I might just watch it tonight.

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: just a psa, I watched Swallowed and did not know (the title was a giveaway) that it is a very gay movie. nothing against gays but I'm not just talking about a gay character, or gay story line. the things that happen are pretty sexual and the gay theme continues through the whole movie. also no relation to being a gay movie but it wasn't a very good movie.

maybe you do not want to watch it in front of your parents, or if you are just a young couple that would prefer not to watch something too gay.

            Spoilers:

uhh so the horror aspect is they get forced to swallow drugs to smuggle then later on one of them gets punched by a red neck and the bag bursts in his gut. turns out there is some parasite worms inside instead of drugs, it bites him inside and he gets a fever as well as a huge boner (not joking 😂) he claims to feel numb and a couple shots of his massive boner. later on (a bit slow paced) the psycho guy they are delivering them too is also a gay guy, forced them to remove the other bags by hand, lots of scenes of this. psycho guy is very weird trying to seduce and at the end one of the guys becomes a gay porn star and is being interviewed. the movie overall was pretty meh.

Here's a bunch of stuff I loved. I tend to include serial killer films as horror so there's a few of them here too.

            Barbarian

duh! great recent one. don't know why I missed that oh well too late to add to my list now. 😭

watched it for a second time months later was still great.
also not exactly the same theme but looking forward to watching "Companion" which I thought was the same writer/director but I was wrong, it says "from the creators of Barbarian." not exactly sure what that means when the director/writer is a different person but anyway. still looking forward to it after seeing the trailer.

            • +1

@n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: It's produced by Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian. I have it to watch but it's on the neverending list!

Loved all your recommendations by the way, I've seen most of them I think…

              • +1

                @theory:

oh thanks for clearing that up I was still confused. 🤯

thanks and yeah I think I agree with you that a lot of what I watched and probably listed is crossover between horror>thriller>great story. I enjoy serial killer type movies too when they are done well they are amazing! for example this one is a recent favorite of mine I even posted it. A Walk Among the Tombstones. I would list more but my brain is still stuck on "horror filter" to make the previous list. 😅

I have it to watch but it's on the neverending list!

afaik it's only available for $29.99 rental on AppleTV at the moment. have been waiting until at least it gets down to the regular price of $6.99 to rent. so no rush, maybe by the time you get down the list it will be on a streaming service or something.

          • @theory: Any of you peeps seen Skinamarink?
Not a conventional movie by any means, more experimental and dreamlike.

It's very strange - it's so boring that I feel asleep during it, but it's also really unsettling?? I still find myself thinking about parts of it at night and getting creeped out.

            • @FezMonkey:

Any of you peeps seen Skinamarink?

I haven't but thanks for the reminder, forgot about it I thought the trailer looked good. it's aussie production isn't it?? oh maybe not I was thinking of a similar movie. I was thinking of Babadook. I wanna watch both now.

anyway worth mentioning apparently Talk to Me is another aussie one pretty highly rated apparently. same writer/directors are coming out with Bring Her Back in 2025.

            • @FezMonkey: I see what they were trying to do with Skinamarink but it wasn't for me, gave it one of the lowest ratings I've given a horror movie in years (4/10 on imdb, the overall score being 4.7/10).

        Would love some general recommendations.

      • +3

I'll start (and probably get ripped for my tastes):
        - Autopsy of Jane Doe
        - The Witch (aka VVitch 2015)
        - Hell House LLC (and all sequels - I love found footage stuff)
        - A girl walks home alone at night
        - Thelma
        - The Ritual
        - Midsommar
        - Sinister
        - Rec
        - Byzantium

Edit - Adding ExistenZ and Thirteenth Floor to the list but they're more scifi-ish.

Ofcourse very subjective but feel free to pan :)
Nota bene: I love horror and have had Shudder for a while as well as other platforms so unsure where the above are from.

        • Sinister was very good and really a very original mish mash of genres. If anyone hasn't seen it go into it cold and you'll have a pretty scary night.

        • LongLegs!!

        • Wow good list from a fellow horror buff, Thelma is underrated

        • +1
          • Midsommar

what about Hereditary? I think a bit more horror genre than Midsommar was. personally I watched Midsommar because of the meme's but mostly brooding tension just wasn't enough. if you like trauma type horror maybe try "What josiah saw".

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Try the Director's Cut of Midsommar, not much difference but adds some extra clarity to some things.

Hereditary is one of my top 3 all time. I believe it's a perfect movie. If you have a spare 4.5 hours check out this awesome video explaining everything -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlqyulT662g

            • +1

              @theory:

Try the Director's Cut of Midsommar, not much difference but adds some extra clarity to some things.

thank you for the good advice. I knew about Ari's cut but I hadn't remembered to look for it, I guess like other cuts it might be a bit hard to find. Possessor also has a uncut version I think I have watched both just based on my memory of one scene.

Hereditary was one of those movies that for me was quite a unique experience, and also knew it would take me more than one viewing to understand. I haven't watched the video you linked yet, but for example when that unforgivable thing happens it really draws the audience in to the character, like your psyche would just avoid confronting what happened at any cost and you would delay that sense of dread for as long as fricken possible. I think it is shown how he just walks like a zombie and goes straight to sleep, at least that's what I remember. I'm sure there are many layers I haven't seen yet. I found Toni Collette's character the most interesting.

in this kind of way I think Midsommar is similar, but kind of polar opposite where everything is kind of sunny and with flowers except hints that it isn't. just a completely different approach I think I prefer the more relatable approach of Hereditary (average house, family etc). but I'm sure people can also find ways to relate to Midsommar (trauma, getaway, foreign country).

          • -1

@n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: IMHO I don't rate Hereditary… I thought it was mediocre at best. Again everything is subjective and that's OK :)
I'm happy to watch whatever others suggest as well if I haven't seen it already.

            • +1

@khomeini: ok fair enough. yes sorry if it felt like I was ripping you for your tastes I honestly wasn't. as you said it's subjective and you like what you like. 😀

it's just that personally I would put Hereditary on the list instead of Midsommar because they are the same director.

              • +1

@n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Nah, not at all. I didn't want to offend yours lol. Do give your top horror movies and I'll be sure to watch em as there's not too many good ones left to watch!!

                • +1

@khomeini: my list is just above user theory's dot point list a few scrolls up. sorry I did a terrible job typing it doesn't even look like a list. 🙇‍♀️
also some of the movies are crossover's of genre, so maybe horror subgenre type movies (but pretty sure anyone expecting to watch a normal movie would still be horrified).

    • +1

Yep, horror can feel stuck on repeat. But there’s always space for subgenres. Ie. Horror where AI scripts your life or digital ghosts haunt old VR spaces. Cults based on influencers or eco-horror where nature fights back? New fears and anxieties = new horror.

    • +10

GOOD horror movies are few and far between.
Its the cheapest genre of movie to produce, and they always turn a profit regardless of how bad they are. So studios pump them out like crazy, you have to sift through the junk to find the good ones.

    • +4

Try some international ones.. order of my favourites
One cut of the dead (Kamera o Tomeru na!) - Japanese [one cut also a pun refer to one cut of the camera]
      Hollow (Doat Hon) - Vietnamese
The Platform (El hoyo) - Spanish
The Hole (Whole?) Truth - Thai

      • Hey man can you list some more recs please

        • +3

A Tale of Two Sisters (Korean)
          Exhuma (korean)
          Last night in soho (UK)
          Shutter (Thai)
          muoi (vietnamese? Korean?)
          House in the valley (vietnamese)
          last shift (usa)

          • @huu: I saw the tale of two sisters in South America in an otherwise empty hall with egg cartons all over the walls it was pretty scary

        • Sukob (philipines)
          Rigor Mortis (Hong Kong)

    • For what it's worth, I really liked the sppanish movie Aterrados (guy to the right of Steven Yuen). It's kind of Eldritch horror.

  • Great, thanks OP. Been waiting for a good promo for months!

  • was mr. long legs supposed to be a horror movie? hahahaha

I used Shudder before and after I canceled they kept on charging me. Had to contact them and get it back which took weeks

Saying that, can this code be used Shudder inside Amazon Prime Video?

I don't understand why it won't give the different subscription rates before I create an account. That's a no from me.

    • It's weird right ?

  • +1

the best horror movie was martyrs.

  • Anyone know if cancelling your subscription straight away after joining still give you the 60 days free?

    • Description above says you can cancel straight away.

I'll join just to watch the 'in search of darkness' horror documentary's (hopefully they are still on there).

Is a pre paid card something you need to get from a bank ? or something that takes weeks to get ? I would rather use one.

  • Thanks OP

    Also works for ex-subscribers

    • Any idea if it works the Amazon prime?

For recommendations, the following are all reasonable in my opinion - obviously some may disagree. To me, none were so terrible I considered them a waste of time.
    Sting
    Cobweb
    Vermines (it's in French though)
    Abigail
    Little Bone Lodge
    Imaginary
    Salem's Lot (the new one)

    • +1

If one has a really memorable scare it's probably worth seeing. The witch in the window is just ok but has one scare in it that practically made me leave the room. Not only that but they let you know it's coming before it happens, just inspired direction. Smile 2 was unnerving and original in a couple of parts too.

  • Anyone know when the promo code expires?

  • I've been trying to watch on my Android phone but it's glitchy as (profanity). It keeps giving me error message and telling me to contact support.

  • Code still works. Signed up with a prepaid Visa and cancelled immediately. Thanks OP.

  • I really am a CLOWN60 for putting this offer off for weeks. sadge.
