I recall it cancels the SIM immediately, so if you want the full use of the data, to just set a reminder for 25~ days from now to cancel

    • Buddy if you can show me a GC deal that works out to 25%+ for iPhones I'll kiss you

      • -1

Wait for 10-15% off RRP, which often comes through Amazon or Costco, price match at JB or OW, pay with 10% discounted Gift cards. Easy.

        • That's still not 25% overall and a lot more waiting :)

          • -1

@TheFreaK: You don't have to wait if you play your cards right and prepare yourself for the opportunity in advance :)

            • +1

@Mrtoolate: Or you can just get this deal and save 25% off the bat?

              • @TheFreaK: I do not want an inquiry on my credit file, also it would avoid any future problems with Telstra. I prefer to avoid the hassle of having my information collected and then dealing with the cancellation process. While some may not see it as a big deal, I find it to be quite troublesome.

                • +1

@Mrtoolate: Imagine doing this deal with discounted gift cards!!!

                  Win and win.

  • Can i keep the box closed or does it need to be removed from the box to activate this deal in store as I want to get this as a gift?

    • Do what ever you like with it, when I do these deals I literally walk out with new sim and throw it without activating

      • Do you mean for a new number or for porting ? I am already on Telstra and I don’t want to port out my number

        • just get a $2 sim from coles/wws

  • Apologies if this has already been asked — but if I'm already with JB Hifi/Telstra mobile, how many days before signing up do I need to "port out"?

    • +1

Rather than porting to another provider then back to JBhifi telstra, wouldn't it just be easier to just sign up to a new number since you are cancelling anyway

      • I was in the market for a new phone plan — but you're right, it makes more sense to just pursue the tried and true method you're referring to. Thanks!

  • +1

Are people having to call Telstra to cancel? Or live chat ? Just port the number out again ?

    • I just grabbed $2 amaysim sim and ported when I got home. Received the final invoice (around $766) from Telstra around 10 mins later.

      • Someone said you need to choose a plan minimum $10 to activate an Amaysim. Did you have to do that?

        • Yep, $10 pay-as-you-go to activate the sim.I'm not sure if there's a cheaper method as you cannot port from Telstra or Boost (I have a spare Boost SIM that I had gotten a 100% cashback that I sadly could not use for this.

      • Hi thanks for sharing - just to check do you still pay the $99 for the first month or is $766 the total if you cancel this way?

  • -2

I’m very slow, so if you don’t mind me asking what exactly are we doing ? I want to get 16 pro max 1 tb for the cheapest possible before flying to Japan(TRS) can you please advise.

    • Not sure why you're getting negged so hard but… check the first few comments on this thread and it will explain what to do, to get approx $500 off the cost of the iPhone 16 model you want :-)

  • Could anyone shed some light on how the final outstanding amount is issued? Is it a final invoice to be paid in full in line with the billing cycle?

    • +1

Final invoice is sent to you approx. 10-15 mins after you cancel or port out. You have around 10 business days to pay. My due date is 6th May for example, assuming they accounted for the upcoming public holidays.

      • Thankyou for confirming

      • That due date is just a joke. You can pay in months or years with no issue at all.

  • +4

Arent you essentially getting $500 off RRP? 1400 (initial off)- 800 (cancellation cost) - 100 (1st month)

With Costco prices or gift cards 10% off and potentially TRS refund once can get close to this price, specially for higher end models like the iphone pro max. And you save the hassle and the risk

    • +3

Keep in mind you can also use gift card on the remainder off the phone. ie. iPhone 16 Pro 256gb: $1997 - $1400 = $597 that you can use a GC on.

As a bonus, the invoice reflects the full RRP - my receipt has the full $181.54 GST component which could be claimed in full if going the TRS route.

      • Oh, you get full $181.54 GST on the invoice? That's really nice. The FAQ says TRS is only for the difference between {cost of phone} - 1400. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/866578

        • +2

Nah my response to it was correct :)

You will get a full tax invoice issued by JB Hi-Fi. On the tax invoice, it will show the original price of the device, less the JB Hi-Fi gift card amount. The GST will be calculated on the price pre gift card amount used. If you are claiming it as part of the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS)(abf.gov.au), you will need to advise JB Hi-Fi to put your name as it appears on your passport. You cannot claim the GST component on the final bill from Telstra.

Regarding this part that you mentioned: “ The FAQ says TRS is only for the difference between {cost of phone} - 1400.”

This is how the invoice will be shown. A few more details further down my response has said the GST is calculated pre gift card amount used as quoted above

    • Yup

  • -1

reckon i can do a instant asset write off of $2000 [via my pty ltd] ? or is the Giftcard deducted from it?

could i also claim the ETC too??

  • Is the phone locked to Telstra? Plan was to activate with a cheap Aldi $5 Telstra sim, cancel, and then put my original Optus sim in. Would that work?

    • +1

Phone is unlocked since you’re buying like any outright purchase

  • -5

sorry guys, I couldn't see where it says you can pay the portion of $800 - 23/24 on pro rata and cancel the plan.

Based on term and conditions (http://www.telstra.com.au/jbhifi-mobile-terms) (Point 6.2) you need to pay the portion of the voucher you received as part of the deal which is $1400 which will be $1341.67

it looks like you end up paying $1341.67 + $99 = $1440.67 with the overhead of number port

    • +1

Read a few comments above within this deal thread mate - someone has confirmed the ETC cost which I’ve mentioned it a couple of times with confident :)

    • +2

Just went to JB and confirmed its $800 - pro rata.

  • -1

    Is this Telstra sim locked?

    • No, the phone is unlocked, and the SIM is under the Telstra network

Your question has been asked and answered in this thread

  • Too bad this phone still stuck at 60hz

  • +1

Just went in to sign up for a 16 pro, during the process their system showed up an error says “something went wrong” and rep said it’s due to Telstra rejecting the offer, anyone experienced a similar situation? I’m porting over from amaysim and only has one phone number with no active contracts.

    • -2

Maybe they caught up to it :/ Was gonna do it tonight.

      • +2

What do you mean they caught up to it?

How do they differentiate the legit 24m contract user and ozb users who cancel right away?

    • Yes I had the same problem yesterday, it failed 5 times and no one knows why 🙃

      • I have had the same issue and JB staff told me to contact Telstra as my credit score is ~900 and clean RHI.

  • If I Port in then cancel, can it just be ported back out? Once cancelled?

    • +4

Buy a spare sim and use that to "port in". Don't bother porting it out, just throw the sim away afterwards.

  • +3

    Just completed the entire process:
    1. The invoice shows the full price. The staff reminded me to include a name for TRS, but unfortunately, my trip is in 3 months.
    2. The ETC is $766.59. Finished Telstra chat within 13 minutes

    • Which iPhone did you get?

      • Upgraded from 13 Pro 256 to Pro Max 512 GB, planning to use it for the next 3-4 years to survive through the tariff war.

        • @Kinoodle nice! so for pro max 512 , it would be around 2147-1400+766+99= 1612 right?

          • +1

@max25well: yes, and definitely lower than that if you pay the gap with GC. You can also try to ask for the refund of $99

            • @Kinoodle: Sorry wondering what are usual regular reasons for cancellation? This is my first time doing, thanks

              • @ChanS: "Change of mind" lol

              • @ChanS: i simply said i don't need this phone number any more. Change of mind is also a good and reasonable one.

            • @Kinoodle: any jb hi fi GC deal :P

              • @max25well: nothing from supermarket this time. maybe check this and see if you have access to any

            • @Kinoodle: Did you get the 99 refund?

          • @max25well: 512gb is 2497???

    • +1

bonus question, can I claim that ETC as business expense?

      • I don't see why not

    • Not sure why you would want to cancel right away though. Why not use the first month free 300gb data since you have already paid for it. Cancelling after 25 days or so yield the same result, same ETC amount $766.59.

      • Good point. Is there a reason?

      • -1

If you don't put in your sim at all you can request a refund of the $99 out of goodwill

        • Just tried that but was refused. Do you let them know you haven't even put in Sim?

          • +1

@bruceclipse: Try again, if refused then again :)

          • @bruceclipse: Yes, tell them you haven't used the sim at all. I don't think it's company policy to refund the $99 but requires manual approval from the operator.

        • is the refund processed instantly? I got told to message back once the payment goes through as they haven't received the money yet

          • @salami: No, the charge has to be processed then they refund it. But the idea is for them to log you requested a refund asap.

  • no ip16 256gb? .

    • Seconded, can we do this with ip 256?

      • You can - you just pay the storage price difference

        @Frozensage @Climpton

  • -1

can I do this on good friday? are JBs and telco working?

    • Of course not lmao

  • can i get 2 plans? or only 1 per person?

    • +1

Yes you can get two. I got two iPad contracts a while back .

      • Thanks mate

    • +1

The usual official limit is 3 but it is not a system imposed hard limit as long as the staff is willing to go over it for you.

  • Went to the store in the morning and manager mentioned they can't advise to cancel and to wait at least 2 weeks. Went home then decided, I still want the phone so came back and got it!

Process was fairly straight forward - ID, salary, job questionnaire for credit check

  • Hi Guys will the Telstra Pre paid sim card be able to port in? I am so remote there is no Aldi near by. Thank you

    • You can do Woolworths as well for amaysim.
You have to do it in store I believe

    • -1

NO, it must be non Telstra. I got an esim from woolworth for $12.50 which is 50% off the original $25, it took 40 minutes for it to get activated. Do this if your phone supports esim.

      • Thanks I did this, took me half an hour with amaysim to setup.

        • Do you need to recharge first to activate the sim?

  • -3

    how much is the cancellation?

    • +1

      $766 as mentioned several times.

      • is this the same for all ip models?

        • Yes as you cancelling the same contract of $99 a month.

  • For those churning, is it better to sign up and immediately cancel or keep it for the first month?

  • To port my number to Telstra. Do I need to be able to receive sms on the original sim?

I want to be an amaysim sim, that expired 1 month ago.

    • yea, they will send a code to your sim before confirming transfer

      • Thankyou for helping me get this deal.

        As an aside
for TRS ask JB to print receipt with your name on it. by default, my receipt didn't not have my name on it

  • -2

Has anyone purchased a 16 pro max? How much did it cost overall?

    • +4

It’s quick and simple to calculate lol

  • +2

So tempted to try this (am way overdue for a new phone - Pixel 5 here) but crapping myself that I'll do some step wrong and/or get some harda55 on Live Chat who wants me to pay full tote!! The cancellation is done with Telstra Live Chat?
