Yup, or JB Mobile app would work as well

      • Thanks. So you pay $99 to JB Hi-Fi on the day you walk out with the phone?

        • +1

For the last 2 signups I didn’t need to, I still couldn’t figure out why

My ETC was the full $800 instead of the pro rata amount

    • Exact same situation here - pixel 5… cracked the screen yesterday, battery giving in. But am just not sure about how smooth cancelling is

      • My last eight or nine have been fine

      • Think I'm going to let this iPhone 16 deal slide and continue with my Pixel 5. Hoping for a decent deal on the Google X, even if it ends up costing me a bit more than $865.

    • +2

There's no 'steps' to follow really, but if you really need steps here they are:

      1. Go into JB Hi-Fi and purchase your device with the advertised deal like a normal purchase. 15 mins tops in-store and you walk out with the phone.
      2. Cancel/port out of the Telstra service.

There's no rush between steps 1 and 2, and it's basically impossible to mess up a port-out or cancellation. If you're really worried about cancelling, just port out to a $5 sim. Fully automated process, and you'll even get your ETC invoice within 10 mins of port-out completion.

Really, the only thing that could stop someone is if they fail the standard credit check for whatever reason lol.

      • Thanks for the reply. Got all of Good Friday to think it over. Don't think I'm going to get this price for the Google X later this year. Not afraid to switch to Apple - just want a good solid phone.

      • should we get a new $2 sim to port into and cancel that? as i sitll have my optus 365 sim till next year.

        • Still need to recharge first to activate the $2 sim?

          • @vash12: might need to, because we need to get the code to activate the service.

  • Could we get the invoice for full priced iPhone 16?

    Guess we could?

    • +1

      Yes, correct

  • Can I do this and flip it for $1400 (late at night in a park of course) to net myself a $600 profit?

    • +1

Why would someone buy it off for you for the same price they can buy it in store ?

      • +3

I like your haggling. Fine. I'll do it for $1100.

        • Do you accept Jb-Hi-Fi gift cards?
At a 10% discount of coarse.

  • Just a quick question about port-in: I just signed up for an Optus trial eSIM (7 days). Does JB require anything besides an active number?

    • +1

Your ID will be required for a credit check.

  • I signed up today and attempted to cancel. However, Telstra informed me that my payment is pending and that I should reach out again in five days for cancellation. Does anyone else have a similar situation?

    • +1

Unless you can get the first month $99 refunded, why not keep it for a month and enjoy the 300GB data and unlimited calls

  • Anyone else cancel straight away?
I can't see the ported service in my.account

  • The staff said Apple shipped tons to US overnight before the tariff hit… Nice move.

    iPhone or Xiaomi?

  • Whata the tax invoice say as the price? Has anyone claimed TRS through this method?

    • As said already many times full tax invoice. But if you want to use for TRS you need to ask for invoice to be put in name of claimant.

      • +1

People are lazy these days and can’t be bothered to read 4 pages of deal comments haha

  • +1

Can we use the $10 jb perks voucher? Every dollar counts..

    • +2

Bro, I will tell you there is an exclusive $30 Easter discount LOL

      • +1

It says excludes Apple products, but no harm trying I suppose. Would be great if it actually works.

        • I tried the $30 voucher ($300 minimum spend) to purchase a phone cover alongside the iphone, they rejected it due to iphone being the $300 minimum part so couldn't apply the voucher per the system

  • The iphone 16 pro 256g in costco is 1929, if I do price match, then I get $1400 off, I need to pay 1929-1400 = $529, then I pay the rest part with 10% off Giftcard, which is 5290.9 = $476,then I pay 476 + 865 = $1341, then I get the Tax return next month when I leave Australia = 1341 - 19290.09 = $1167 !!!! Am I correct?

    • +1

Some JB don’t allow price matching if you’re signing up to the Telstra deal, at least my local stores don’t allow this

      • Okay, That's only $70 difference, doesn't matter

  • Seems like this should work with salary packaging as well, because the invoice shows the full price. Is that right? Has anyone done this?

    • +1

Correct. I did for one of the iPads I bought in last years deal.

      • I have a question about salary packaging and invoices. When you processed your salary packaging claim, did you encounter any issues with gift cards being listed on the invoice? Does the salary packaging provider only consider the total invoice amount, or do they examine the specific items listed? I'm wondering if having a gift card on the invoice causes problems with processing the claim.

        • +1

They don’t care how it’s paid. You get full amount (mine about 35% back).

        • Gift card is treated as cash. Someone could have bought you the gift card or you bought the gift card yourself.

      • Is there a separate category to claim phone bill etc other than general expenses or credit card expenses?

        • +1

It depends on your employer. I think mobile phone and phone bills are the same category for me. Check with your employer.

  • I still have an iPhone 8 lol, do I jump on the 16 pro or wait to see what the 17 is (assuming JB/Telstra do a deal like this every year?)

    • +1

JB ran the same promo last year for the iPhone 15 range as well

Not sure why this year received more votes than last year’s deal

      • I must've missed last year's deal, plus the boss wasn't ready for an upgrade.

  • -3

can you do this with a 16 pro max? what would price be?

    • +2

This has been asked so many times lol
      It’s an easy math

    • +5

      RRP of iPhone - 1400 + 865.67 = $FinalPrice

  • Curious, does anyone know if getting the plan and cancelling, affects your credit score/history?
I believe they do a credit check before they approve your plan.
However, does this hack affect your credit score in a bad way?

    • Why would it? It’s a normal credit and you pay off debt so nothing to be worried about.

  • +1

If you were to go overseas soon, can you claim back your GST through TRS? 😀

    • +1

      Yes

  • Wonder if we could use JB gift card to pay 99 or 766.67 part?

    • Are you talking about the first 99bux? I don't think so as I had to pay via my cc through telstra and couldn't pay via eftpos machine.

    • No to both. $99 has to be paid immediately via your credit card and the ETC is billed from Telstra

    • You can’t as it’s part of Telstra

  • +1

I couldn't convince the chat representative to refund the 99bux paid upfront. They said if I could use it until the end of the month or cancel, I opted for cancel straight away. Ah well still a bargain.

    • Trick is to do it via Telstra App not JB-Hifi Mobile App

      • Didn’t work for me, I tried both Telstra & JB apps. What reason did you give for cancelling? I just said change of mind.

        • +1

Same change of mind. Rejected 3 times by JB but success with Telstra the first time!

          • +1

@bruceclipse: depends with who at telstra chat you end up with

i did it on friday morning for two phone numbers and the guy approved it via telstra chat for $99 refund (as charges still pending he said they'll do it next week, gave me a reference number)

had to do for another number last night and telstra chat rep passed me onto a jb-hi fi rep specialist who stated no refund for the $99

      • Finally worked for me, through JB chat. They said they had to wait until the initial payment cleared. Refunded $99 and invoice full ETC $800.

  • I'm curious if cancelling the contract will affect the credit check and whether I will be permanently refused service by Telstra.

    • +1

Apparently a possibility but I’ve done about 9 in last three years no issues

      • thx!

    • +1

Not as long as you keep up your end of the termination clause and pay the outstanding bill in full and on time it wont.

  • Im so sorry but can I buy some ipad with this trick too?

    • There was an ipad deal yesterday. I know very little about iPads, it might be a good deal.

      Apple iPad 10.9" 10th Gen 64GB Wi-Fi $448 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Harvey Norman ($425.60 Price Beat @ Officeworks)

  • I recently went through a similar process to get my s25. My wife is due for a new phone, but I am not sure if I can do this again so soon after the last one. She is a stay home mum so not sure what issues she might face with the credit check.

    • -2

      Dont be greedy

    • +1

She can’t apply for one. She need proof of income on application. They will ask what your job

    • Surely you can sign up another one now as its been sometime for S25 deal and you should be good to get another one.

  • Hi thanks for the post. what I am unsure about is how did you arrive at voucher value of 800 in your calculations when the voucher value should be actually 1400? so shouldn't it be, 23/24*1400 + 99 = 1341.67 + 99 = 1440.67 ?

    • Telstra doesn't see the $1400 voucher only $800

  • Does anyone just stay on the 99 plan?

  • Ok so for the iPhone 16 Pro Max 512gb,

    $2497 - $1400 + $865.67 = $1,962.67

    Does that sound right?

I guess I missed the Costco 1TB deal.
For the $1994 price beat of Officeworks.

  • +7

    Thanks for sharing the deal!

I got the iPhone pro max 515gig last night

    • Submitted a request to trade in my old phone $560 gift - card - received the e-gift card within 5 min. Need to turn off find my iPhone for this step
    • Got the $5 Aldi SIM card - took 8 minutes to activate
    • went into JB and did all the checks and signed up
    • will cancel via the jb chat later today

    Overall price came to $1075

    $2497 (cost of phone)
    - $1400 gift card
    - $560 trade in phone gift card - need to send phone so it arrives within a week else they charge your credit card
    - $100 gift card (from previous Coles promo)
    + $766 early termination fee ($800 x 23/24)
    + $99 monthly fee
    - $227 TRS soon

    • Well done mate , excellent price and good explanation

    • Can JBHIFI assess your trade-in phone's condition on spot? just worry about now it states $560, but when you send off and they claim this or that and give you the less value.

      • No it’s done online by a third party

That is a possibility. I did come across posts on reddit about that happening

    • Cheers for mentioning trade in! I assumed my XS was basically e-waste at this point but i can bring the cost down between $100-$170!

    • How does the $5 ALDI dim work?
I bought the $5 starter pack last night and couldn't activate as it seems to require a plan which starts at $15.
Am I doing something wrong or bought the wrong card?

      • +1

There was a drop down that said something along the lines of “no recharge”. I can’t remember the exact working

        • +1

The last option in the drop-down. I can't remember the wording. And it takes some time to activate… Around 30 min

  • iPhone 16 vs Plus vs Pro

With my 5% discount + trade in it will cost $67 extra for the plus or $257 for the pro.

Didn't want to spend much over $800 so leaning towards the plus but I dont know a lot about iPhone so thought I'd ask.

    • +1

      iPhone 16 (Standard)
Most affordable option in the lineup
      6.1-inch display
      Decent battery life
      A18 chip
      Standard camera system

      iPhone 16 Plus
      Larger 6.7-inch display
      Bigger battery, extended battery life
      Same A18 chip as standard
      Identical camera system to standard

      iPhone 16 Pro
      Titanium frame
      120hz display with always-on capability
      A18 Pro chip
      Better camera with telephoto lens
      LiDAR scanner

      • Definitely sounds like the Plus is worth it for $67 more, not sure on the pro.

Im using an old S10 and have done for a year after my S21 FE stopped working so all would be a huge upgrade no doubt.

        • The difference going up to the Plus will be more than $67.

          • +1

            @Charlie Dont Surf: $1397 less $1400 = $0

            $1597 less $1400 less $120 (trade in) = $77 less 5% off = $67.15

Since you can't take $120 off $0 or use it for the Telstra charge it does work out that way.

You could say I can get the $120 voucher on top of buying the standard 16 to spend on something else but for me a new phone is all I require at present so I'd rather use the trade in voucher to get a better phone as I only upgrade every 4-5 years.

Sorry if the difference was misleading, I half explained in my OP but didnt break it down.

  • -4

    thanks for the post op!

just curious once we get the iphone, if we dont open it and come back to jb can we return for a $1400 gift card since the invoice has full amount and jb has 30 day returns if item is unopened and sealed?

    • +1

Most JB staff would be made aware that the $1400 was part of the Telstra promo so you have to be lucky to get someone that would be able to refund

    • -1

      Pathetic move

      • how so? i just asked as ive seen in previous deals such as the ipad one where some asked the same? wanting to buy an ipad instead of a phone so hence why i asked and if it not possible i will just wait for the next ipad deal no big deal.

no better than everyone who is immediately cancelling?

    • +4

This has been shared many times and others have confirmed above already that the ETC is $800 pro rata 🤦‍♂️

      • +1

Ah gotcha – thanks for the heads-up! I was going off the terms in the JB Hi-Fi Mobile Upfront Service doc (section 6.2–6.5), which specifically mention a Voucher Repayment Fee calculated pro-rata on the full $1,400 voucher, not an $800 cap.

If the $800 ETC has been confirmed through direct experience or updated info from Telstra/JB, then that’s super helpful – I’ll happily stand corrected. Just sharing what I could find in the official terms for others to double-check too.

        • -1

If you don't agree then either dont get the phone or get it and stay for 24 months

        • Confirmed it's $800, cancelled my plan

  • +11

I think my calculations are correct - breakdown for the phones:
