  • I failed the credit check last night, which was a surprise.
My salary is not high but still within the six-figure range. Agree that I was just approved for another Westpac credit card and underwent a credit check for the Optus deal last month but my total borrowing capacity is only $27K with No mortgage.
Came back home and checked all credit score platforms (Illion, Equifax, Wisr and ClearScore) and as expected, I’ve never missed any payments over the years, score range is near 800. Yet, the result at the JB store was that I’m not eligible for the highest tier (or $1400 off) plan.
The missus received the same result and she's having only one credit card which was just approved recently. Her report from the credit score platforms is all good; the only difference is that her salary isn’t in the six-figure range.

    • Do you have to provide proof of income?

      • No, they’ll ask you how much you earn roughly (ie within a salary range they’ll show to you on screen)

        • Correct and I did tell them the correct range. I'm feeling the JB store I went to is a bit dodgy so will try again at different store tomorrow.

          • @akafinal: @akafinal any update please? I’ve had similar experience yesterday. It said “something went wrong”, but JB doesn’t know the reason and referred me to contact Telstra and Telstra rep asked me to contact JB 😂. My credit score is >900

            • +2

@gracie88: I tried the second store yesterday and had the same issue. I needed to ask a friend who doesn’t churn credit cards to buy it for me. and he passed the credit check with flying colours. 😂
Did you just have your credit checked for another deal, such as a credit card or Optus internet? That’s what I’m guessing the culprit is, as the saleslady told us that people receiving payments from Centrelink have been able to buy the phone. She also asked if I’m from OzBargain. Guilty as charged lol.

              • @akafinal: Thanks so much. That makes sense 😂 . I applied and got approved for Bankwest CC in March.

              • @akafinal: So I’ve escalated this for manual review and was told the issue was repayment history with Telstra service. They require 6 x m continuously clean payment on any bills. I’ve had one manual payment in Dec as I forgot to update to new CC payment as I closed off the previous card saved on Telstra account. I paid off immediately after the first notification. Unfortunately, no one in Credit team has any DLA to override this (can’t believe the legacy system) 😂. Was told to maintain 6x m clean payment and there will be no issue on future credit checks! Zzz

                • @gracie88: Ive never used Telstra but I did use heaps of cashbacked Boost sims in the past. I saw some of those sims appear under my account when they did the credit check. Maybe I should do the same as you did. Did you escalate via Telstra support after logging into with your Telstra id?

                  • +1

@akafinal: Oh now that’s interesting. I went into the store and requested the rep to raise a complaint and escalate it as I wanted a quick response. You can also raise it via the app. Expect delays and misinformation. I finally got the answer today after being put through 8-9x reps!!

    • Hey whats Minus TRS?

      • Tourist refund scheme

        • -3

I dont get it. Do you have to be a tourist?

    • my iPhone pro 128gb came to $1085 as I got them to price match O/works $1777 ;)
(they wouldn't price match Costco, which would have been approx $50 less again)

Read all the comments through 5 pages. I'm going for this deal for my wife who is still using IP7 plus. Thanks OP

  • Do we need to contact Telstra or Jb hifi to cancel the plan?

    • +2

Yes - you can live chat them via the Telstra/JB Mobile app

It’s in the FAQ as well…

  • +6

I haven't gone through all the comments to see if it's been mentioned yet, but for those who were denied the $99 refund through online chat, ask if it can be credited to your account instead.
Basically the same result. You're still getting $99 back, but in the form of telstra credit.

This is what I did during the Samsung S25 deals and they happily obliged.

    • That is a great idea. Has anyone gotten theirs refunded via credit?

      • Kept getting refused statng that first month is not refundable based on T&C of the sign up

      • +2

Yes JB-hifi mobile app is a no go, but managed to get the first month refunded via online chat via Telstra app.

        • Nice, what did you say as the reason?

          • +1

            @Classo: Change of mind 😉

            • @bruceclipse: Nicee, I've been trying but they kept saying no. Probably cause there is a history of me asking already on Telstra chat

        • Hi @bruceclipse, just want to check whether your $99 was charged immediately in JB store? or is showing like a bill, say "$99 due in 14 days" in your JB mobile account? Thanks.

  • +2

Just cancelled and managed to get the $99 first month back as well.

    $766

    • Been trying but rejected three times already. Did you cancel via JB-hifi mobile app chat?

    • How Mate?

      • +1

        Do it via Telstra app

    • Nice one, what reason did you give for canceling? I’ve tried both Telstra & JB and they won’t refund the $99

      • He mentioned change of mind but I don't think it works on all the customer service agents. I haven't found one that worked and tried 3 times on the Telstra app

        • I’ve been told by JB chat today that it’s not possible because the initial payment is still pending. I’m going to try again after the payment has cleared.

        • Finally worked for me, through JB chat. They said they had to wait until the initial payment cleared. Refunded $99 and invoice full ETC $800.

    • Hi @tqqq, just want to check whether your $99 was charged immediately in JB store? or is showing like a bill, say "$99 due in 14 days" in your JB mobile account? Thanks.

  • If there is no Aldi nearby, what is the best alternative sim plan to sign up for?

  • -8

Does this deal work for only iPhone 16 (128gb)?

Does it work for iPhone 16 (512gb)?

Can a student without a salary use this promo, or will it be denied during the credit check?

    • +5

Please, let’s show some respect to the hard works Ozbargainers have done for you in the full 5 pages comments.

    • -5

My advice is don’t do it.

If you cancel they will say the early termination charge is $800.

2 years later you will get a bill for the remaining $1500. People have mixed up cancellation of the service with cancellation of the contract and debt.

You will notice everyone doing this only started in 2024, so none of them have reached the point where the final amount is due. They will all be in for a rude shock.

      • +3

This loophole has been around much longer than that. A couple years ago, you can even avoid paying the early termination contract by asking telstra to move JB plan to telstra plan.

      • +1

Im wondering if there’s any substance to this. I’ve never heard of this happening to anyone.

      • +1

I've been doing it a lot longer than that

        • -1

I just called them up and the lady said you have to pay out the remaining contract and the cost of the phone

      • haha

      • +1

So termination doesn’t mean termination? Good one haha

        • +1

Called another store and he said it was just the $800, no further repayments. Conflicting huh!

          • +1

@spud0: I also confirmed with Telstra directly upon cancelling if there would be any other charges and they said no. Will keep the reference number just in case but I doubt there will be any other charges.

  • For the TRS invoice, can you put someone else’s name (I’m not travelling but a family member is)?

    • Yes just give whatever name you want to the cashier at JB

      • Can confirm, just did this today.

  • Not trying to sound greedy but Just wondering if we can cancel and then go back in for the same deal over and over again ? Thank you.

    • You can but not within next 30 days as I was refused a plan when I cancelled one and wanted to sign up for another one within next few days.

      • You have to sign up for all your plans before cancelling any apparently.

I think there was a limit of 3 mobile service $1400 discount offer per customer, so you'd probably order all 3 and then cancel them afterwards.

  • I can meet at JB to pay the difference with 5% discount using gift cards on Sunday or Monday. PM me if interested. Thanks.

    • +1

No, that's reserved for Pro models.

  • I did this with the pixel and I got a fresh number via Telstra then cancelled. My partners going to grab this deal, I'm getting confused by all the take a Sim comments, why can't she just grab a fresh number on the Telstra Sim? She does not want to port her own number over, Cheers

    • This deal is for port in only.

      • Thanks. Can you port in with a $2 Telstra Sim or does it have to be another network?

    • Pick up a Vodafone sim with 7 days use from woolies for $6. I activated in the food court, put it in my old phone and walked in and done the deal. It was activated almost instantly and ported out 15 minutes later.

      • I only have the one phone so should I put activated sim in while I’m doing the deal? I won’t need to access anything else?

  • Sorry if this is a silly question, but if I want to get this plan, do I ask about it when I’m buying the iPhone, or is there a separate mobile section at JB Hi-Fi I need to go to?

    • +2

No separate JB mobile section, just tell them you want to buy an iPhone and take up the offer

      • Thank you for letting me know.

  • +8

Thank you guys! My first time to have an apple after all those crazy vouchers from Samsung and wasn't keen on paying full price. From getting an aldi mobile SIM card and cancelling the plan took only an hour. Also, my man from JB gave me an additional $100 off the pro. Total $625 off! I cant imagine not buying a phone without ozbargain. Happy Easter to everyone!

    • Noice , What JB -did you buy from if you don’t mind telling ?

      • +1

The great city of Armadale in Perth,WA.

    • Hey just curious how did you get them to give you another $100 off? Did you ask to pricematch another store?

      • +3

I was just nice to the guy, didn't expect it at all.

  • How do you guys find the $1400 off? I only found 1100 at the website with the $99/month plan. Is the promotion end?

    • No it's still showing $1400 off on iPhone 16 range.

  • Just got rejected at Tuggerah, NSW. They told me I had to be on my current provider for 30 days before porting in. I tried to argue. They wouldn’t budge. So frustrating.

    • Don’t give up! Go to another store!

    • That shouldn't matter. When they ask you to show a past invoice, just be confident, pretend you got it in your Gmail and just couldn't find it, they will just keep filling out the rest of the application and move on. I eventually told them the monthly plan is covered by my employer, and I won't be able to get access to it until next Tue. They didn't ask seem to be bothered by that.

    • What they asked you to prove you had been connected for 30 days? Is that in the T&Cs?

      • Yes they did ask me that exact question. I was confident with my response though heebee

    • I had the same rejection very annoying.

Bought an aldi sim. Activated it in the shops. Got the confirmation email and phone number of the service but I never stuck the sim into my phone because I didnt have one of those little pins with me.

Nevertheless, with the phone number in hand I went into JB to begin the process. Got 20 mins in and they entered all my info and when it got to the final page on there screen (some salesforce dashboard) it said some error about sell profile not active. Then he gave me the spiel about needing to be at least 30 days active on that existing sim I'm trying to port across.

Did others have this issue or did we just get unlucky Sirpumpkinator and I?

  • The guy at my store said the cancellation fee was pro rated on the $1400, so I guess some of the stores still haven't caught on to the workaround with Telstra's T's & C's.

Currently signing up now but the port has been paused as I seemed to have signed up with the incorrect birthday on the virgin pre paid sim I set up this morning. Not sure. I've paid the first $99 but then got a message saying the port has been paused.

Still going ahead with the purchase of phone minus the $1400. Also got the Costco price match at $2079 for a 16 pro max 256gb

    • That Costco deal for the iphone 16 pro max 1 tb for $2099 was indeed very crazy given how the 256 gb is just $20 off of that…

    • Having called Virgin and Telstra, it seems the incorrect birthday is on Telstra's end.

Telstra say they can't do anything to fix the details and retry the port for 24 to 48 hours. What do people think will happen if I cancel now before the port ever goes through. Can JB come after me for the $1400?

    • wait, your store mentioned the prorated repayment of $1400 instead of the base $800? Confused about your latter statement that some stores haven't caught up.

So did you cancel and get $1400 or $800 as the early termination repayment?

      • Despite the store saying cancellation is the $1400 pro rated. I continued and am relying on all the previous confirmations here and in previous deals that's it's actually the $800 that is pro rated as per Telstra's conditions.

I haven't cancelled yet as I'm still, kind of, not a Telstra customer yet due to the port process failing. Despite having paid the initial $99. And having now bought the phone with the $1400 discount. Either the rep in store put my birthday in incorrectly, or the Telstra system has some faults because they have my birthday details in the port request wrong, off by one month.

My number hasn't been ported yet, and Telstra want me to wait 24 to 48 hours before they try again. Not sure if I should just go ahead and cancel now or wait for the port to complete.

        • They let you take the phone using the gift card without a successful port first?

          • +1

@Jd0911: yeah, it seems odd. You win if the port does not work.

            • @search: Use the failed port as your reason for wanting a refund on your $99 upfront cost.
They aren't supposed to charge you unless your port is successful.

Or at least the staff who served me made a fuss about not letting me have the phone until he'd confirmed the service was active.

  • +3

OK just done it. Woke up early got the $5 aldi card. Activated. Took a good 3-4 hrs in total.

Not sure if the rep new about this. But im guessing yes. He thought i was stupid 🤣. Which is good.

After you do this. Call them up. The number is 13 50 76. Tell them you want to cancel the plan. It will take no more than 5 mins on the phone.

Payed $197 & $99 (first month) . If you are already a telstra member apparently you can skip that $99 first payment.

Got an invoice of $767 to pay the cancellation fee. (This includes the "deduction" of the first month)

BTW they do a verification to see if you can afford the plan. They ask some questions like are you renting, what bracket range of money you make. Etc.

ALSO Make sure to buy the $5 SIM card for porting. It will take 10 mins to activate this. If you dont do this it will cancel your phone number you ported for good.

FINALLY Make sure you create the JB HI Mobile account before cancelling so you can pay them the cancellation fee. You will need to have your number active that you ported to send the verification code before cancellation. Otherwise you probably just call them and pay the cancellation fee that way.

    • which phone did you choose mate

    • Someone mentioned in the comments that porting your number out automatically cancels the plan. If that’s the case, it looks like you can keep your number and still cancel the plan.

      • Yeah it may be possible. But already have a plan set up. Less headache just to buy the $5 aldi sim for me atleast.
