    • Did you keep new sim in your phone while you did this?

      • Forgot to mention. Done it on my current phone which only allowed 1 Sim.

He said I need the phone number active to port so i went and removed my current sim with the aldi sim.

SOUND ADVICE: Make sure you have some sort of small holder so you dont lose the sim cards. Also you need a pin . Aldi package doesnt come with a pin.

Afterward he asked for an email and phone number (Alternate phone number) Gave him my current number.

Told him i didnt have that phone on me so he verified by email. You can connect to their jb hi fi wifi to see the verification code / there should be enough data to cover that part on the sms plan of aldis 😂😂😂

    • HEADS UP ON THIS:
I dont think you can pull this off twice, as in same person.

They collect your information, they write "person walked in the store asked for this plan etc"

      • +1

Thanks for the response, unless this is a new thing I think people do this multiple times. I’m doing for a second time before it ends but don’t remember them doing anything like that

      • +1

did three times with the same person

did twice under my name then go rejected for credit limit

then brought a family member along to do it the third time

jb rep had no issue, swapped the new aldi sims to get the texts from JB Mobile etc. etc i did see him writing notes like that but that just seems for reference. or used in the future not to do this sort of deal cause so many people cancelled

        • Sorry guys quick one. Bought an amaysim for the swap. Have put my old sim in and cancelled through jb app however to log in to jb mobile I need a authentication code to the new ported number which is now not working on the old amaysim or new jb one! Any ideas?

I need to log in to pay my invoice, stressing a little

          • @Madfrega: The invoice automatically charges to your Telstra plan payment method after 10 days. That’s what the JB HiFi staffperson told me

            • @Liger Zero: Thanks for quick response mate. Yeah I know that will happen but I still want to be able to log in to the app anyway for future. Ive just tried logging in to Telstra id and its the same thing. Why wouldn’t the sim be working any idea?

        • Thanks. I tried getting the $99 refunded after contacting jb hi fi. Telstra chat agent said no because they already issued a cancellation. Did you use the same telstra account from the first one? Also did you cover the cancellation costs before you went in for another one?

Haha a bit late as deal is ending now.

          • +1

@ozredpanda: first two under same account, in the same conversation telstra chat agent agreed to return $99,
they charged me $799 instead of the $766, so i assume that's cause of the credit for $99 they will do.

third time different telstra account and different agent.

didn't cover the cancelltion costs for the first when I went in the second time, being both under same account i cancelled together

third time was under differetn person.

            • @kafka: Thanks for that . Wish id have gone ahead and done similar. They are good phones. Should last long. Im not sure if they will do this sort of offer again .

  • +2

Signed up in store then went home and did cancellation via the JB hifi app. Still haven't received the final invoice via email yet after about an hour. But got email saying my request to cancel is complete. How long until people are getting the final invoice for $766?

Ok it came through about another 30min later

    • I received an email after 30 mins.

  • Tried several reps via chat and no luck getting the initial $99 charge refunded or credited to my account :-(

    • Hi @natedogg118, just want to check whether your $99 was charged immediately in JB store? or is showing like a bill in your JB mobile account, say "$99 due in 14 days"? Thanks.

  • who do you talk to to get 99 refunded? tlestra or jb hifi and what number please if thats ok

    • Tried at Telstra app, and no luck

  • +1

Strangely Telstra says the early termiantion fee is 799.92?

    • +2

Yes, same happened to me last time this deal was posted. I’m a Telstra customer and the service was added to my existing account. Was never charged the $99 initial month service fee.

      • My case is a bit special, as I already have one JB/Telstra plan with me. In JB app, it seems to combine my 2 services together.
I do not see a new invoice 99 from today, and also my card used to pay has no 99 payment showing up. Also when i sign up, the staff member said, my monthly payment would be 89 + 99, which I did not pay attention initially

      • Oh thanks for confirming that. So I just need to cancel the plan now with 799.92 repayment?

        • +1

Yes I was annoyed when I saw that was my payout and everyone else was paying less, but i was ok when I found out I didn’t have to pay the $99

          • @unity1: Thanks heaps! Glad to see someone had similar case before.

If I cancel the service now, could I keep using this number, or it stops immediately?

            • +1

@bravemeow: Once they cancel the service it will stop immediately. If you want to retain the number you would need to port out.

  • Hey we are aiming to claim the TRS for this phone when traveling oversea, however we are a bit worried about bringing it back unboxed. Have anyone has done this before ? what are the best way to bring it back? Does it need to be used?

    • Most likely, nobody would check you. But not 100%.

Maybe just bring it back with the packing?

    • Wouldn't matter if you used it or not, technically (legally) you're up to pay the GST in the event that you're randomly checked by customs. Plus any fine - unlikely though. Probably the least conspicioua method is to discard the box and have the phone in your pocket!

      • Thank you, Does TRS require you to have the original package or the phone box on you at the time of claiming ?

        • +1

I generally present any electronic items in the original packaging just to reduce the chances of any hassles (customs officer having a bad-hair day). Sometimes I discard the packaging immediately afterwards, but usually I like to keep packaging because I reckon it helps with resale.

If you're talking about a phone, then if you pull it out of your pocket to show them, in my mind it's a pretty clear signal that you're going to bring it back into the country I reckon? Don't think they're able to deny you your refund there and then, but you'd want to have a story ready.

My recent trip overseas I had a few small electronic items to TRS (total <$500) and I got questioned pretty solidly!

          • @Charlie Dont Surf: Great thinking mate. Will keep that in mind.

          • @Charlie Dont Surf: It doesn't matter if you bring it back into the country after claiming TRS - you can import up to $900 without paying duty, and $1800 if you combine with your partner and travel together

            • -1

@Fancydancer: Yes but this phone will be invoiced at over $900. I did overlook the fact that he mentioned "we" in his/her post, and I'm not sure who that other person refers to. But you're right about the combined allowance with a partner.

              • @Charlie Dont Surf: Just wanted to clarify—does TRS require the phone to be in its original sealed packaging when making a claim, or is it fine to bring it unsealed but still with the packaging?

                • +1

@CJayS: You can remove your goods from the packaging and also USE the goods before you depart. All the customs officer needs to be able to do is verify the goods against the corresponding tax invoice. I generally present electronic items in their original packaging just to make this process smoother and easier - it is not mandatory.

    • I did this two years ago and I was already using the phone when I went into TRS office (didn’t have the box with me) and they matched the details on the invoice with my phone. No issue while coming in. No one checked anything anywhere

  • +1

Tried to sign up in my name but my existing Telstra account seems be wrong, says 'fraud' in the IVR, need to remove the VF flag. Called Telstra but nobody answered.

I have to ask my wife to go to store to sign up in her name (new Telstra ID) 1 hour ago. Credit check OK and grabbed an iPhone 16 128G, then gift card balance is $3. The invoice shown $1397. Credit card charged $99 immediately. The staff said penalty is max $800 if cancel the contract and most customers choose to do this. :-)

I will try to use the sim for few weeks then port it out to keep the number.

    • Same issue here, existing Telstra customer. Clean credit file with Experian score >900 and never once failed on any payments including my wifi service with Telstra. My credit check failed and JB staff asked me to contact Telstra as JB has no visibility of the decline/failed reason. Telstra staff gave me generic reason… still on live Chat but very slow response time 😩 🤦‍♀️

      • Never heard so many people getting rejected for a phone contract. Has something changed recently?

      • I signed up for two phones today. No issues.

Also signed up for the S25 Ultra when first released and cancelled.

        • +1

I don’t know what’s going on. I’ve never been declined for any credit products or services in my life. I churn credit cards strategically for points, and yet today was quite eventful. I was passed through four Telstra customer agents just to find out the reason for the decline—only to be redirected to go to a JB store. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry for wasting the last 4x hours of my time 😂

    Very good deal
Got the 256gb Pro model for $1,269 ($1400 deal + $100 GC I had + JB LiveChat refunded the $99 + $5 Aldi SIM cost)

Has anyone got good case recommendations ?

    • Just checking, with the $99 refund, do you need to pay the termination fee in full (i.e. $799.95) or only 23 out of 24 months worth ($766.67)? I know people who have an active Tel$tra Postpaid service are able to retain their monthly billing cycle date. That way, technically they have not yet been charged, making $99 refund possible, but they pay the full termination fee (overall, that's a better deal).

      • +1

I got an invoice for $766 roughly. Due in 10 days I think.

        • How did they ask you to pay for it?

          • +1

@Classo: It will be direct debited by the due date from my card. Alternatively I can login and pay it myself.

    • did you ask jb chat to reimburse the $99? as telstra chat wouldn't budge at all

      • +1

Telstra said no. So tried JB who said yes. Akuna matata.

        • +1

i already cancelled the plan with telstra. is that okay?
can i still ask jb to reimburse the $99 then

        • jb told me no! lol

I bought the Pro 128 this morning for my wife. We will use the Telstra plan for 25 days before cancelling. I hope no issues with that?

    • +1

If you currently have no active Telstra postpaid service and you have already been charged $99 (check your credit card account), then that might be the most cost effective way (might as well use the 1 month service for 25 days).

If you have an active Telstra postpaid service and the billing cycle date isn't today, then it is quite likely you haven't been charged $99 (assuming the JB rep did not alter your billing cycle date), in that case the most ideal situation is to cancel it right away (assuming the Telstra rep is willing to cancel that upcoming $99 and have you pay for the full termination penalty of $800 instead). That's how Telstra rep normally does for existing postpaid customers, but double agreeing to the cancellation. That is a much better deal.

Some people claimed to manage to only need to pay 23 out of 24 months worth of termination fee, and yet getting the $99 back. I'm surprised some JB Mobile / Telstra service reps were that nice.

      • +1

This morning's deal was the only Telstra service I signed up to. And they did charge me $99 on CC. So, it would be worth sticking around to use the plan for approx 25 days before cancelling and moving.

  • After uhming and ahhing all weekend, went and grabbed a 16pm 256.
Next cost for me was 747 and I’ll get another 200 back on trs
The salesperson repeated to me without prompting that the repayment amount is $800 regardless of the gift card amount. I will keep for a few months then change over in new financial year.
    All in all, smooth process

  • I couldn’t find an option to cancel the plan in jbhifi mobile app. How did you guys manage to cancel it?

Note: cancel a.s.a.p. and confirm with Telstra CSR you won't get charged first monthly fee (hence the need to pay full termination fee).

    • Thanks, that explains it quite clearly.

I got unlucky and the staff made me a 'new' Telstra account when porting over.
If I'd known before going in, I would have been more careful to use the existing account.

Telstra live chat are refusing to refund the $99 upfront cost.

Based on the above comments, that'd be because there is no 'billing cycle' on the account, because there is no postpaid service on the account.

But at least it's only an extra $66.

      • +2

Yeah, need to have an existing postpaid service in order to avoid being charged $99 on the spot (and to get a clean / full cancellation).

        • Correct.

          • +1

@Duece1995: Ohh, that's why they did not charge me $99 and sent a final bill of $799. I got a phone today and cancelled as soon as i left JB hifi Store.

    • Thanks for the detailed explanation neat presentation. Have been wondering why some got charged 766.59 and some 799.95.

    • Do you get TSR GST if the phone was from 99/m plan? Wouldn't it bill you on monthly basis instead of straight full phone cost receipt for the intend of TRS?

      • JB HiFi receipt will show that you purchased a phone outright with a gift card worth $1,400.

$99/m plan is another charge entirely.

      • +1

This deal is get a $1400 JB voucher towards buying an iPhone 16 series phone outright if you sign up for Telstra $99/month plan for 24 months. The JB transactions result in the following invoices:

        • Phone purchase (the invoice does show part of it was paid using a gift card or completely pay by the gift card if the phone is iPhone 16 128GB model)
        • You may get an invoice for first monthly fee of $99 (unless you are existing Telstra postpaid customer).
        • Another invoice from JB Hi Fi Mobile (on behalf of Telstra) for early cancellation fee.
    • Thanks for the very clear explanation and table. I signed up to 2 plans in store yesterday (JB rep mentioned you could do up to 3)
Was wondering why the 2nd plan ETC was $799 (which as you mentioned works out better overall)

So for anyone else who was thinking about signing up to more than 1 plan, it could be slightly more worth it!

  • +2

Bit the bullet and went with the iPhone 16 pro 256. Price matched with officeworks at $1977, $20 less.

Can’t seem to get the first $99 back. But not gonna stress about that. Will do TRS.

    Great post OP! Thanks again!

Oh and blood just keep reminding them to put your name on the invoice. They forgot after multiple request, and had to issue a manually written receipt in the end like it was 1990.

    • Did the manual receipt show the gift card amount being deducted?

If not, guess you can claim the whole amount 1977aud

      • Whole amount at 1977. Staff didn’t write the gift card amount. Which makes it easier to claim TRS actually!

        • Good on you.

          • @DealWithReality: Gift card is just a payment method to my understanding. Even if it’s stated on the receipt, the invoice should still reflect the full cost and gst of the phone.

    • Just to check, when you say “manually written,” do you mean they reprinted a receipt from their POS system, not literally handwritten? I’m not sure a handwritten one would be accepted for TRS.

      • handwritten on official JB receipt. They were 100% confident it would be accepted. There's no way to reprint it anyway once it's printed without your name.

TRS site doesn't say anything about handwritten not being accepted. On the contrary, has a FAQ for electronic ones.

    • to be fair it was not a bullet. Kind of Easter egg :-)

  • Officeworks has 16 pro and pro max range $20 cheaper and JB HiFi will gladly pricematch it.

  • Hey all, has anyone tried this twice and what was your technique, did you go to another store?

    • +1

This. I done it once but I might try it one more time. My plan is a new email plus new sim plus new store. Will let you know if it works

    • +4

Yes, i signed up to two plans today at two different stores. The benefit is once you have an existing Telstra service you don't pay the $99 in store to sign up. Just the $800 cancellation fee.

      • -1

All stores close tomorrow. I hope I get a chance to try my luck the 2nd time on Monday.

        • When does this deal finish?

        • Monday should be open right?

      • What do you mean by this?

        • I tried to explain it above with the table. He belongs to group B so he gets a better deal.

For someone who is already an existing Telstra postpaid customer, JB Hi Fi Mobile (which is managed by Telstra) follows standard Telstra billing cycle for the monthly fees (so the first partial monthly fee will be calculated by Telstra in a pro rata manner). Because the $99 monthly fee doesn't get charged at the time the new service is setup, there is a chance to get it cancelled on the same date and paid the full early termination fee instead.

      • Yes, i want to ask this! So you can use your previous Telstra account when you "first signed up" to prevent the $99 fee?

  • -4

Can I claim 899$ during tax return if it's used for work?

    • +1
Yes, because we are NOT responsible for Your actions, so if you get audited by ATO, that's Your problem.

It depends. for most people, anything above $300 needs to be done as depreciation (it's April already so you can't depreciate much this financial year) and you generally cannot justify a phone is 100% for work and there is 0% personal use. Speak to your accountant, rather than ask on OZB.

      • Thats a great response. Thanks.

I didn't know anything above 300 was to be claimed as depreciation. Motorola it is 😅

    • Why did you make your question bold and bigger than everyone else?

  • Exludes Iphone 16 256gb/512gb etc. Only for Iphone 16 128Gb

    • 😂😂 read a comment

    • JB's T&C for this promo say it's only for the 16 128GB but as mentoined through all the pages this works on the entire 16 range

  • Anyone knows if it still available on 21/04/2025? Or it expires 20/04/2025?
