  • Does anyone know if you can trade in an old iPhone and use those gift cards for this promo?

    • +4

You can pay the balance using the GC but not the plan cancellation fee

    • +1

Yes any JB HI FI Gift cards generated by whatever means are able to stack with this offer.

  • +3

Just think of it as a $534.33 discount off the JB list price of whatever iPhone 16 model you pick.

The Australian schooling system truly at work in the comments here lol

  • -1

Does the invoice include the full RRP the phone is sold for? I need it for TRS.

  • Just spoke to a rep and bit confused.

    Looking at 16 pro 256gb - $1997
    - $1400 (JB hifi credit)
    + 99 1st month
    + $766.67
    Total cost = $1462.67

The confusion is that the JBHifi rep said you'll be paying back pro-rata of the $1400 Jb Hifi Gift card and not the $800 Telstra amount.

    Read the T&C

    Voucher Repayment Fee

6.2 If you received a JB Hi-Fi Voucher when you purchased your Mobile Service and you cancel
that Mobile Service within any applicable Voucher Term, you must pay us the outstanding
amounts for the JB Hi-Fi Voucher you received for the cancelled Mobile Service (the Voucher
    Repayment Fee).

    So according to this, i'll be paying back 23/24 * 1400= $1341.66

    Can someone please confirm this?

  • Those who took the deal, what does you tax invoice shows? If it shows the discounted price, it may not be ideal for people who claim tax deduction and /or TRS.

    • +1

Apparently invoice is only the {cost of phone} - 1400

      My receipt shows:

      SUBTOTAL: $1997.00
      TOTAL PRICE: $1997.00

      Online Gift Card $1400.00

      <My credit card payment details>

      GST Included $181.54

Basically during the sale they literally grab a gift card off their shelf and set it up with $1,400 credit. They then process the transaction on the full amount and swipe the newly minted gift card on the terminal for you.

      • Have you purchased it already? Which one pro or pro max and gig? And how much paid at the edn?

        • The only configuration that totals $1997 is the iPhone 16 Pro 256GB.

          They should've:

          1. Paid $1997 at the counter | Total: $1997
          2. Gotten a $1400 gift card (GC) | Total: $597
          3. Been charged $99 for their first month with Telstra | Total: $696
          4. Cancelled their Telstra plan for $766.67 | Total: $1,462.67

They likely used a $5 pre-paid ALDI sim to meet the phone number porting requirement. There's a chance the Telstra representative was nice enough to waive their $99 first month fee (seeing as they paid for a month, but only used a day or so).

The total cost was either $1,368.67 or $1,467.67 — most likely the latter.

Where can one buy the cheapest esim to port over to JB?

    • +1

$5 SIM from Aldi not esim

      • -5

Thanks, might be easier to buy woolies $25 for $12.50 esim.

        • +6

Well then, why ask what the cheapest is?

    • +1

Would you use the Aldi sim to port, then use your existing active sim immediately? Is that how it works?

      • +5

Yep heading to aldi now to buy a new $5 PAYG Sim with a new number, will use that new SIM to port that to JB, then when get home with new phone, insert my current SIM and cancel the JB(old ALDI)

        • I signed up to the optus sim, was able to make calls in and out however couldn’t get the verification code sent through. currently waiting for my aldi sim to activate

I was on the JbHifi plan and sign up similar deal. When I call to cancel the contract, they asked for a termination fee of $150

  • -2

just checking pro max not included in the deal? Thanks

    • +2

All iPhones 16 should be except the 16e

  • Missing the old days with 12M plan

if you look at this page for the $99/m plan - it states the voucher is $1100 and at the bottom of the $99/m plan it says "The $1100 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card will replace the value of the Voucher stated in the Critical Information Summary."

It seems you will be paying the remaining $1100, not $800 ?

$1100 voucher plan page under the $99/m plan:
    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/pages/upfront-mobile-plans

    Critical information summary page:
    https://www.telstra.com.au/help/critical-information-summari…

Let me know if im correct.

    • Yep, the repayments will also be based off that value. It's a bit confusing.

According to T&C you'll be paying back part of the $1100 or $1400 depending on the product chosen.

Waiting to see if others have any input.

    • +2

      T&C 6.3 states: -
"equal to the total amount of the base
Voucher divided by 24 and multiplied by the months (o"

Base voucher is $800 - just re-read it closer.

      You'll pay back $800

    • And just to confuse things a little further, the Store Mgr I spoke to this morning told me that only the iPhone 16 model attracted the $1400 discount. All other models in the 16 range (Plus, Pro, Max) were $1100 discount. However, he mentioned quietly on the side that the discount for these other models would likely increase to $1200 on Saturday for one day only.

There was even a print out of the discounts on display on the Apple display table (which I forgot to capture of course).

      • +6

The signs in the store I was in specifically included all the models for the full $1,400 discount. The sales rep also processed my 16 Pro order for the full discount with their only comment being 'great choice!'

Heck, their website also confirms $1,400 on the iPhone 16 Pro model in the promotions section: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/apple-iphone-16-pro-256gb…

        • Have you purchased it already? Which one pro or pro max and gig? And how much paid at the end?

        • +3

It seems the Store reps haven’t read up yet on the full details and are telling us incorrect information. Or they’re confusing it with previous gift card deals. Disappointing form.

New sign up eligible or only port in? Where can I get a cheap Sim?

  • -1

Hey, does anyone know if this can be done if I'm not an Australian resident? I'm from NZ

  • +2

I'm curious, for those of you that have done this in the past, how is the cancellation processed? Do you receive a final invoice for the outstanding amount owed ($865.67)? Are you required to pay the amount in full or could you possibly negotiate to pay the amount off over instalments?

  • Thanks OP! Looking at the 256GB will they price match Costco at $1,550 instead of the $1,597?

    https://www.costco.com.au/Electronics/Mobile-Phones/iPhones/…

    • Yes, they do. I've just done that.

      • Oops, I was told JB does not price match Costco…

        • +1

Yeah, I thought the same at first, but I gave it a shot and the rep didn’t even push back. Ended up getting the price down to A$1,549.99 for the iPhone 16 256GB. He even said Telstra only cares about the $800 gift voucher if the plan gets cancelled or changed.

  • +10

Just got an iPhone 16 Pro 256gb for the missus - her Android died last month and we had decided for her to finally switch to iPhone as she already has a Macbook and iPad.

Luckily I had two $2 amaysim cards lying around since last year. I activated one, popped over to JB and did the whole sales process. Everything went smoothly, using an Ultimate GC to pay off most of the remainder. Without any mentioning of canceling, the sales rep clearly explained that the most a termination fee would cost would be $800 as per the CIS that they showed on screen.

Got home, popped the JB Hi-Fi sim into a random old phone, and I replaced the burner sim with the other unused Amaysim sim. Started the porting process, which just completed. All in all took around half an hour, and the new iPhone is still sitting sealed in its box for the missus later today. :)

The only challenge I had was finding my damn Telstra account number for the porting process, which I was able to find using the JB Hi-Fi Mobile app where it's called the customer number.

    • +5

Without any mentioning of canceling, the sales rep clearly explained that the most a termination fee would cost would be $800 as per the CIS that they showed on screen.

Exactly the same here. I decided not to mention it but they pointed it out.

      • +1

Lets say I am buying Iphone 16 pro 256 gb

Price of phone - Discount + 99 Plan fee for first month
        $1997 - $1400 + $99 = $696 (I can pay this any gift card right?)

Now when you call telstra to cancel the plan, there would be $800 need to paid right (Also can I pay this any gift card)? Where and how I need to pay this?

        Is it additional on $696 + $800?

Can someone help me to understand the process and calcuation. Will be doing it first

        • That looks all right to me. You may get the $99 refunded too; depends if they are still doing that (you need to chat with Telstra til you get someone who agrees)

    • waiting for your story "to be continued.." :)

      • +2

Literally just got my final invoice from Telstra a minute ago!

Here's your JB Hi-Fi Mobile Invoice
        Hi <name>,

An invoice for $766.59 is attached for you.

        • Was the voucher $1100 or $1400 for the iphone pro 256gb? Edit: I see nice deal you got :D

        • Wondering the breakdown of your invoice - how it's $766.59

          $1997 - $1400 = $597 + $99 = $696

Please correct if missed out or wrong

          • +1

@The Front Man: 800*23/24=766.59 - the early termination cost of the plan

          • +3

@The Front Man: I paid $597 in-store after the $1400 discount on $1997. With the termination fee of $766.59 and the $99 I paid for the first month, the total damage is $1462.59, or roughly a 26.8% discount from RRP.

Btw the in-store invoice from JB HiFi does not reflect any of the Telstra stuff. It's literally just the full $1997 price, with a $1400 gift card payment followed by your other payments.

            • @integriti: Lets Lets say I am buying Iphone 16 pro 256 gb

Price of phone - Discount + 99 Plan fee for first month
              $1997 - $1400 + $99 = $696 (I can pay this any gift card right?)

              • +1

                @ARD: So in-store, you can only use GC on the phone: $1997 - $400 = $597.

During the sales process, the $99 is charged separate through the Telstra web portal - the sales rep will do that whole bit on their computer including credit check, port-in process, etc. So that's charged completely separetely.

On cancellation, you would then receive an invoice for the termination: $800 * 23 / 24 = $766.67. This is pro-rata - the quicker you cancel the less cents you pay. You probably can't use a gift card here as it would use Telstra's payment portal.

    • any ultimate GC offer?

    • Can I claim 899$ during tax return if it's used for work?

  • Does number share with a Watch on Jb Hifi Mobile work??

  • +1

Woolworths is currently selling the Amaysim $2 for $1 only so maybe it can be used instead of the $5 Aldi SIM for port in to save further.

    • It requires charging, no?
You need to select a plan?

      • +1

Last time I activated an Amaysim $2 sim it needed to select a plan, and cheapest was to charge $10 credit for pay-as-you-go.

So far only Lebara* and Telstra $2 sims have let me activate without charging.

*For Lebara to activate without charging you NEED to call their customer service number and tell them something like "It won't let me activate my sim online, can you help do it over the phone", then they'll step through asking for your name, email, drivers license number, so they can type in the details manually and in the end they activate it without charge.

For Telstra it can be activated without charge entirely online.

    • Better to go with Aldi as the $5 sim already comes with credit? no need to recharge.

  • -1

Are we able to do the same thing with a iPad instead?

  • Any tips on porting out first?
I'm already on a telstra plan via a similar deal that grandfathered over the JB Hifi

    • Just buy a $2 sim from anywhere and use that to port it in.

      • Still need to recharge first in order to activate the $2 sim? Only exception is Telstra or Lebara.

        • Can you just get a new number and just cancel it?

          • @Joshminey: Most telco will need to recharge first before getting a new number I think.

  • -3

It's not worth the hassle. Any decent discount off the RRP that can be paid with gift cards could match this offer. Wait for a $200 discount off the RRP and pay with gift cards to avoid the credit check and cancellation saga.

    • +1

So you’d pay $1080 instead of $866? More hassle finding discount GCs that aren’t tampered with

    • Thanks - this sounds interesting, I see people mentioning GC but I don't understand how it works - if I buy a gift card to pay, how am I saving? Don't they cost their face value?

      • +3

GCs are often posted here on OzB with % discounts. Most recent example is this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/900145

7% off any value which can be used in a huge number of stores. So for those who shop often in those stores, they have a flat 7% discount, which adds to the desirability of these kind of bargains.

      • +1

Coles, Woolies, some online retailers, cashback programs like ShopBack, banking apps, and various other retailers frequently offer discounts on gift cards.

Woolworths and Coles, in particular, regularly provide a 10% discount on gift cards for a limited time. This discount may come in the form of direct price reductions or points. Around Christmas time, many gift cards are available with a 15% discount, making it an ideal opportunity to stock up.

With these offers, you receive the full face value of the gift cards while paying 10% less or earning equivalent reward points, depending on the specific promotion and discount amount.

      • Ah, I see! Thanks to you both, @integriti and @Promistaker

    • +6

I just completed the full process in 1 hour (including walking into aldi, activating Sim, going to JB, signing up, purchasing and walking out). Defo worth 1 hour to save $600 off RRP

      • Sweet.

      • Did you manage to get Telstra live chat to give you a partial refund on the $99 first month cost of the mobile plan?

I might give that a try, but otherwise you're only saving $534.33 off RRP.

        • +1

When I bought my pixel a few months ago on the similar deal, I got the full $99 refund, will chat to live tonight and see if it's the full $99 this time or a partial. But either way a $500+ savings for 1.25hr effort and 2000 steps (well needed before I scoff down Easter chocolate) is solid, especially for iPhone which are rare to hand out deals

        • +2

Just reporting back here, just had the live chat with JB and cancelled immediately, they said they won't refund the $99 because it was activated today (I think due to their new port-in condition, whereas last time it was a new service setup on a new number).
So the invoice I'll be charged is $766 which your comment is correct

          • @Surtr: Wait, do you chat with JB or Telstra to cancel the plan?

            • @johnnytran: Download the JB-Hi-fi mobile app on android/apple, don't need to create any accounts or anything, just go straight to the "get help" tab, you'll initially get assigned a bot, say cancel upfront plan, you'll get assigned a real person and just continue with the prompts (like verification etc. (I asked them to send verification email instead of mobile because I never actually installed that new SIM lol)), was told by the operator the early termination fee of $766 will appear on my next invoice.

              • @Surtr: Thanks! good to know don't have to reach out to Telstra directly

      • Can you still use the Telstra plan for the reminder of the month after you cancel the 24m contract?
