Google Pixel 9 Pro 128GB $0 ($1697 off) on $99/Month 24-Month SIM Plan (in-Store Only, Port-in Only) @ JB Hi-Fi

1410

Same deal that was on the Pixel 9 (expired) and is currently on Pixel 9a (until 23/04/2025).

Switching numbers back and forth is annoying so what I did for a brand new throwaway number:
1. Get cheap SIM only plan with Amaysim (cheapest as at 17/04/2025 was $10), activate on phone.
2. Go to JB, pick the phone and get setup on Telstra with the Amaysim number. Pay the $99.00 for first month, only money to change hands.
3. Next day on Telstra.com cancel the plan, they will have the cancellation fee of MAX $800

*Edit: Actual cancellation fee is $766.67 (from comments).
$766.67 + $99 = $865.67 in total.

So for only $15.67 more than the new Pixel 9A ($850) you get the top-tier of the Pixel 9 line.

First post! Finally I'm able to give back to this awesome community of deal-seekers.
This was my first time making use of a deal like this in store, thanks to all the guys on the Pixel 9A thread for spelling it out step by step, that was very helpful!

    • +7

Why cancel the day after when you can keep the number for 30 days given already paid for the first month? Cancel on the 28th or 29th day after would be the most cost efficient. Use the throw away number for UberEats, Menulog, and Doordash promos

      • +8

Why cancel the day after when you can keep the number for 30 days given already paid for the first month?

I got a refund for the $99 first month plan fee.

        • 🤦🏻

        • +1

To get the refund, did you have to go through JB Hi-Fi live chat or Telstra Live Chat?

          • +1

@Noob Noob: Telstra, once the first month's plan fee is cleared in your bank, you can chat with Telstra in the app or online to request a refund.

            • -1

@jimojr: Did you cancel immediately on the first day of the plan?

              • @emboon: Yes, I cancelled the plan on the first day. Actually, it doesn't matter as long as you don't use the SIM. My friend cancelled the plan 10 days after signing up and still got a refund.

                • -3

@jimojr: How did you cancel? Do you call telstra or jb? Or do you just port over to another provider?

Also how do you not use the sim? Is it because you just use a throwaway sim to port over and not even put it in a phone?

                • @jimojr: Tried this and was told by telstra chat

When you disconnect from an upfront plan in the middle of a billing cycle, there is no credit because the upfront plan payment has been set and will be deducted every month. Unlike traditional postpaid plans where you receive a bill for the services used, with an upfront plan, you won't be getting a bill; you will receive an invoice once the payment has been deducted. Therefore, there is no proration or credit for the unused portion of the plan if the service is disconnected in the middle of the billing cycle. This is because the payment for the entire billing cycle has already been made upfront. System will not process refund.

                  • @emboon: Keep going , I had to contact them 3 times before finally getting the $99 refund. One lucky guy managed to get a $766 voucher repayment fee refunded.

                    • @jimojr: When you get connected again, what do you typically ask? Is it straight just "Can I please get a refund for the first month of my cancelled plan?"

And did you contact on same day or wait a day before hopping back to chat?

                      • +1

@emboon: Cancel the plan on the first day, wait until your bank transaction is no longer pending, then contact Telstra and explain that you didn’t use the plan and would like a refund for the first month’s fee. If they refuse, just end the chat and try again with the next agent, keep going until you succeed.

                        • @jimojr: Much appreciated. Finally got through to someone who refunded it. Now monitoring my card for the actual refund. Cheers!

    • +1

Agree.. I got a 512GB S24U for around 1000-1100 last year following the same steps!

    • Hi,

Can you use any sim whatsoever after cancelling telstra, it is not locked with that telco in any way?

Also, can you do it with just an esim?

      Thanks!

      • Not locked. You can use any SIM after cancelling.

      • +12

        Wow , that's a stretch ⁉️

From someone who has posted a total of 0 deals lol

    • Nice post OP! What’s the amount paid on the invoice? Is it $1697?

  • They up the max cancel fee?

  • Wonder if can get the 256 and pay the diff…

Regret not jumping on the same deal when it was released and got a gift card too.

    I'm on a pix7, should I just wait for the 10?

    • Hard to say what Pixel will do for the 10, the 8 to 9 was such a great jump that would usually be reserved for the "10" in any series of phone because it's a milestone (think iPhone 10 or Samsung S10). This series was already a huge bump (9A, 9 and 9 Pro, minus 9 Pro Fold) that they probably won't have much more to offer for Pixel 10.

To each their own of course, check out reviews and pick the phone you'll actually use.
Word to the wise though, I grabbed a 9 Pro Fold when they came out and had to send it to Google twice because the inside screen broke twice, wouldn't recommend.

      • +4

Isn't the 10 going to have the first Google chip to be manufactured by TSMC? That might be reason enough for a lot of people to get onboard

        • +2

Leaks are indicating the TSMC manufactured Tensor isn't going to be all that faster than the current gen Samsung one, just more efficient.

I usually don't listen to leaks, but Pixel related leaks seem to always be reliable.

          • +1

@BradH13: Efficiency counts for a lot, especially if they have a decent thermal solution.

I bemoan my s22+ that thermal throttles to ~55% performance on the GPU after 10 mins or so

      • +1

I have the 8 pro. Whats the big jump?

        • Hold out for the Pixel 10 Pro, you might score $1000 trade-in for your 8 Pro.

        • +1

          There isn't one

      • -1

There's information that Pixel 10 will have a camera from Pixel 6, e.g. huge downgrade, and they will rely upon the software to provide reasonable quality pics.

      • Damn. I have my eye on a couple of 9 Pro Folds on FB Marketplace. How did your screens break?

    • I just read the T/Cs on the page. It said that this particular offer isn't available on the other storage options.

      • Thanks, I checked too. Was wondering if in store they would…

    • +7

I'd wait. I went from 7 to 9 pro and honestly don't notice much difference. There's a lot I don't like about the 9pro and the camera isn't as amazing as you'd expect. The lens scratches so easy too. I'd hold off

    • +4

$766.67 + $99 to be exact for the Pixel 9 Pro

      • Edited original post to reflect that. I got the same but wasn't sure if I was meant to get $800. Do you know why $766.67 instead of $800?

        • +2

Because you've already paid the first month of a 24 month plan, so it's in ratio to that.

        • The termination fee is pro rata.
          800/24=33.33
You have paid for 1 month already.
          800-33.33=766.67

      • Can try to talk with Telstra get and 99$ reverted as well.
Did the same for Galaxy 25. Only paid 550. In the end phone got late I cancelled it. Got a gift card with 1350 which was pretty awesome.

    • +3

Nothing is free (in the same vein you don't make a "profit" by buying a $1697 phone for $900, you just spend $900).
With this deal you pay $99 for the first month of the plan, and then cancellation of the plan which is max $800. So max $899.
Walk into JB, ask for the deal and pick the phone, they get you setup with the Telstra account and you pay for the first month and you walk out of the store with the phone and Telstra account.

      • +1

This is probably also a quirk in Telstras' KPI. Somehow they value acquisitions and sign ups far more than retention, even if their margins on the handsets is probably next to nothing.

        • as any other telco, financial institution or ecom brand… so short sighted; and loyalty gets no reward

    • +1

Yeah, if you don't cancel the plan. The whole point of this is to cancel the plan…

    This or iPhone 16 Plus?

Im usually a Samsung user but I havent seen any deals on them recently.

    • +11

Why would you go from Android to Apple?

      • Some people are into that kind of stuff…

      • +1

Price basically, theres no deals like this on the Samsung and my work phone is an iPhone so as much as I prefer Samsung, it will do the job for half the price.

I need a new phone badly, rocking a cracked S10 thats on ultra power saving mode half the time.

Edit: Also wonder if phone prices will increase, or have lower discounts with the US tariffs as they'll need to make up for the higher import cost.

        • +1

I think Samsung JB deal should come close the eofy

          • @DealHunted: Just confirming that you're saying a similar deal should come up EOFY for Samsung? If so, I'd definitely wait, been dealing with this phone for 12 months now.

            • +2

@Mat12345: Yeah it should around that time. I got mine in July last year.
Please don't quote me on this 🙂
              All the best!

    • The best time to buy samsung phones is on release by stacking all the discounts, mainly the $400/500 off by "trading in" a device

    • Why are you comparing this to the base 16 Plus?

      • Pixel 9 Pro = iPhone 16 Pro
      • Pixel 9 Pro XL = iPhone 16 Pro Max

The 16 Plus has compromises if you're looking for the highest end pro flagships.

      • -1

Because I personally know bugger all about phones these days and was hoping for some fellow opinions.

Which one is better is not just feature based, it would include things like quality, update period, andriod v apple. I believe you're more speaking to the features.

        • +1

There's plenty of videos on YouTube that do these types of comparisons, how about watch a few and decide?

    • Pay the money for Samsung. I have the 8 Pro. Runs hot and is buggy. Camera is great but that's about it.

  • +11

i think todays phones are so good, you really only need to swap in 4-6 years

    • +4

except the battery doesnt last 4-6 years.

heavy users like me my Pixel 7 bought less than 2 years ago is already at 73% origincal capacity and doesnt last a full day on a charge now.

all else i agree spec wise, my pixel 7 even though its mid range still snappy..

      • +6

Which is why I wish they had removable batteries for the flagships… ofc you can take it apart but why not just make it easy for everyone

      • +1

My Pixel 7's battery is apparently @ 96% maximum capacity after 2.5 years of use, and I would consider myself a medium to heavy user.

        • +2

hmm i find that hard to believe. How are you getting the 96% stat?

i am using accubattery and been draining it to 15% and recharging to full to get the capacity.

          • @Jaduqimon: I was using the aBattery app, and I also thought it was a bit high for the age of the phone.

However, I charge it with a Pixel stand that uses adaptive charging, which apparently extends the battery life.

            • @topherboi: well by heavy user i meant like very heavy user lol. i'd be on my phone all day at work.

          • @Jaduqimon: If you want to increase li-on battery longevity I'd recommend trying to keep your battery levels between 25-85%.
It's a little inconvenient in regards to being able to only utilise 60% of the battery's total capacity but doing this could see the battery lasting up to 5-6 years of daily charging before it drops below 90% capacity. It will of couse still be usable after this as well.

        • That's impressive, i was a little bummed to see mine at 94% after 1.7 years of use. Suppose it should still last another 2.5 years without any issues.
I am curious to see how many phones batteries would actually get to 7 years now that both Google and Samsung (S series) support them for 7 years.

        • How do you check the phone's battery capacity? Is there an inbuilt app on pixels or a third party app?

          • @Munki Kundi: As far as I know there is no native app/function to review battery health on Android, you'll need to use a third-party app.

      • -1

When you get your next phone, always charge it to max 85% and don't let it go below 20%. You will have a battery health percentage in the 90's even after 3 years. You do not need battery health apps.

        • ok ill keep that in mind. just got my S25U so will stick to that and see how it goes.

          • @Jaduqimon: There's a setting in Samsung and Pixel phones that allows you to set maximum charge to 80%. I've enabled that on my Pixel 7 Pro, it is a relatively new feature on Pixels but has been on Samsung's for a whole now I believe.

  • +1

Can this be done with the XL?

  • +2

Hi OP, cheapest sim is ALDI mobile for $5 which you can get in store for a physical one. Takes a few hours to activate, less than 4.

      • +1

I've done it with ALDI mobile in the past and can confirm it works. Had no issues with them telling me that it's on the Telstra network and I believe others have pointed this out in previous posts as well.

        • I went in yesterday with an ALDI mobile sim and was denied. Had to get the Amaysim.

          • +1

@Rinser: No problems, I take that back then hahaha. I've got a spare ALDI sim around, I might go and give it a try since I'm in the market for a new phone. Otherwise I'll have to grab an Amaysim one.

          • +1

@Rinser: That's weird, it should work with Aldi and most other Telstra resellers too. Maybe you got unlucky with the rep?

Terms only state the following as ineligible for the port in deal.

Available to port-in mobile services (excluding JB Upfront/Prepaid, The Good Guys Mobile & Broadband, Telstra & Boost) only.

      • +5

ALDI sim worked for me for the earlier s25 deal at jb

      • It worked last night for me. Ported in with Aldi SIM card

Took 7 min between setting up and getting the new mobile number

        • I must've gotten a bad JB rep then. Could've saved $10

    • Lebara $2 Sim from Woolworths I think would be cheapest option. On Optus.

      • you would still need to recharge in order to activate

  • Photo quality wise, 9 Pro vs iP16Pro?

  • +1

Can I use this SIM card separately as mobil broadband in Netgear Nighthawk 5g? Or is there a restriction on how I use it? Does the phone lock to Telstra?

    • Keen to know this too. Would be a pity if these Jb hifi phones on Telstra plans are Telstra sim locked on purchase/activation.
      Can anyone confirm?

    • From previous experience, the speeds get throttled on such mobile
plan sims when used on a modem.

    • +1

But you can get the phone for $865.67 straight away and forego the $2376

    • +4

Yeah, if you don't cancel the plan. The whole point of this is to cancel the plan…
