Google Pixel 9 Pro 128GB $0 ($1697 off) on $99/Month 24-Month SIM Plan (in-Store Only, Port-in Only) @ JB Hi-Fi

1410

Same deal that was on the Pixel 9 (expired) and is currently on Pixel 9a (until 23/04/2025).

Switching numbers back and forth is annoying so what I did for a brand new throwaway number:
1. Get cheap SIM only plan with Amaysim (cheapest as at 17/04/2025 was $10), activate on phone.
2. Go to JB, pick the phone and get setup on Telstra with the Amaysim number. Pay the $99.00 for first month, only money to change hands.
3. Next day on Telstra.com cancel the plan, they will have the cancellation fee of MAX $800

*Edit: Actual cancellation fee is $766.67 (from comments).
$766.67 + $99 = $865.67 in total.

So for only $15.67 more than the new Pixel 9A ($850) you get the top-tier of the Pixel 9 line.

And we all believe signing up and cancelling contract, providers don't have a credit history of this and behaviour? If you do so often enough what happens? I guess lots of ppl will take the risks. It's like getting many credit cards move and cancel, it can affect credit rating

Its fine you don't need to borrow money from home loan until you do.

I guess smartphone cancelling contract is not there yet.

However other comments do suggest it lowers your credit rating

        • +1

How on earth is it going to effect your credit rating when you cancel the contract and pay it out in accordance with its terms?

This deal takes advantage of a loophole in the terms to net you a great deal. How is that hard to comprehend?

          • @combatant: To be fair, the frequency of credit checks does make a difference, so if you get this and then go get another plan it could give a small hit. Probably not a big issue. Good to get a free credit report occasionally.

Edit: much better discussion of this below.

    • +15

tell me you don't understand the deal, without telling me you don't understand the deal…

This JB Hi-Fi mobile "hack/deal" has been going on for years on OzBargain on almost every flagship phone imaginable and yet people still miss the point of the deal, despite step-by-step instructions given in the main post

      • -5

The title is wrong should say hack or cancel plan deal. Point is it only works if you cancel.

Who is to say that your credit history and behaviour history on cancellation is unaffected or is not worth the money you save.

Lowering credit rating might not be worth the deal hence waiting for an outright price with prepaid sim is the way

There should be a disclaimer saying cancel at your own risk else it's the full price.

Using the full discounted price with cancellation, paying penalty exit fee as the condition should not be in the title

    • +4

The sadness is that I see this type of comment again…

  • +5

It amazes me how JB and Telstra aren't batting an eyelid at all these cancellations and letting this loophole slide. The real question is if it impacts your credit score.

    • +6

It does, mine dropped a bit over 100 points. Only do it if you have a good enough score or don't plan on getting credit anytime soon.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/813229

      • +1

        Thanks for sharing this.

      • Mine went down 100 for one reporting period and then went straight back up to what it was previously the next reporting period when I did the JB loophole when the P9ProXL came out.

    • Names will go in a database somewhere, I can guarantee you that. Whether or not the chickens will come home to roost is another matter.

Why are they still allowing this? Bulk prices for purchasing phones from Apple, Google, Samsung so they can eat the loss, could be brand retention or more likely they can use it for a tax offset and use the cancellation as a loss on revenue.

    • I reckon it does

  • If i just get a telstra number which comes with the phone, does JB provide a SIM when i purchase? Is it as simple case of porting my current kogan e sim into the phone when i remove sim from JB after cancelling? Cheers!

    • +1

I got a choice of either eSim or physical when I went. I got sim and was able to just remove and put my own sim in. I can't imagine you'll have any trouble doing eSim either, probably easier because the Pro 9 only has one sim slot.

      To answer your question: Yes.

      • thank you kindly!

  • +1

Pixel users got more deal than iPhone users ($1400 off).

  • How long is this deal?

  • Sucks that this has to be done in store only.
I live probably 2.5-3.5 hours drive from the nearest JBHIFI and dont even drive.

  • wow, i just bought google pixel 8 pro 1 week ago with the half price deal on jb hi fi.
but i think i should refund that and do this deal instead?

I have read that 8 pro size is bigger than 9 pro, but 0 pro spec use tensor 4 compared to tensor 3 on 8 pro
    any thought?

And i should be able to refund the 8 pro at jb hi fi right?

Then i will do this hack for the first time in my life :)

  • I think I'm missing something. I can't find anything in the terms and conditions that says the cancellation costs $766.67 or any other number. Where is the $800 (minus first month pro rata) mentioned? How do we know it's that amount?

  • i have a question, how do you pay the $800 cancellation? is it to jb or to telstra? and can I use existing giftcard?

    • +1

my understanding is you pay it to telstra when you cancel

      • i see, Thanks! then if I refund my unopened phone from jb from last week, they will most likely refund it to giftcard, and I can't use it for the new phone

        • they will most likely refund it to giftcard

they should refund to same payment method you used

        • Why would you refund unopened phone? Just curious as I thought the reason you're going thru all this hoops is to get the phone right?

  • If I cancel telstra, can I still port my old phone # back to other provider, ie Amaysim?
Or do I need to use a burner phone # ?

  • Can a student without a salary use this promo, or will it be denied during the credit check?

  • No love for XL

  • -3

Looks like also an option to get $1200 gift card instead….

Going with that as google phones rubbish

    • Even with that reasoning the $1100 gift card is not a good deal for phones better than the Pixel (~6'' overall good daily phone with good camera)

      Take S25 for example the cheapest it was was $700-800 in the past. Compared to now = $1387 - $1100 + $766.67 + $99 = $1152.97

There are ongoing deals out there cheaper than that without needing to go the extra effort with cancelling FYI

I'm waiting out for a good S25 deal, tempted by this Pixel deal but not sold on the performance yet (coming from a Fold 5)

      • Email today said $1200 but fair point if wanting a phone but if just wanting some JB credit then fair game

  • For anyone that has done it, what does the tax receipt say? I want to be able to claim back the ~$800

  • +1

Beware, by the terms of the actual contract (the Critical Information Summary is not the actual contract) you are supposed to repay the full value (pro-rated) of the "voucher", the voucher here being replaced with "The Google Pixel 9 Pro 128GB" by the terms of the deal.

If they do not charge you the full amount, it is only by their own generosity. By law, they can compel you to repay the complete value (again, pro-rated). I can understand if one wants to gamble on this, as it would be a great bargin; but I, personally, would rather not have a Sword of Damocles dangling over my head.

    • There is no voucher though.

      • +1

        The offer says the following:

The Google Pixel 9 Pro 128GB (referred to as the “JB Hi-Fi Voucher” in the Telstra Terms and Conditions available at www.telstra.com.au/jbhifi-mobile-terms) replaces the dollar value of the Voucher in the Critical Information Summary and will be available to you instore after connection approval by Telstra. If you cancel or move to a lower cost/different plan then you must pay a Voucher Repayment Fee to Telstra pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan’s minimum term. Excludes Google Pixel 9 Pro 256GB/512GB,Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold models.

That is, they treat the value of the phone as the "JB Hi-Fi Voucher" wherever it is mentioned in the contract and Critical Information Summary.

        • Wonder when they will enforce this and automate it for the final bill, I noticed this too recently. They didn't have these contract terms stating the phone value replaces the the dollar value of the CIS for deals from last year (from memory)

    • Not sure whether the T&C have been changed in past couple of days, but the website now says:

"The JB Hi-Fi Gift Card (referred to as the “JB Hi-Fi Voucher” in the Telstra Terms and Conditions) will be available to you instore after connection approval by Telstra. The $1100 JB Hi-Fi Gift Card will replace the value of the Voucher stated in the Critical Information Summary. If you cancel or move to a lower cost/different plan then you must pay a Voucher Repayment Fee to Telstra pro-rated …"

So is the pro rata payment based on $800 or $1100?

  • +1

I just talked to sales rep, they have promo for pixel pro 9 256gb, same thing but with $1700 off

    Pixel pro 9 256gb is $1847
Plus sales rep has confirmed he can applied the $30 off for the $300 spend
So thats $147 extra - $30 = $117 on top of the cancellation. For an upgrade of storage

Not bad! I am taking this deal

    • Did you speak to a sales rep online, or in store?

      • I speak in store. The sales rep shows the other available deals.

And that when he told me about this option of upgraded storage

    • Keen on this too - let us know

      • +3

I got it. Paid $117 and $99 for the first month.

Just need to cancel the plan in couple of days

        • Cheers - is that due telstra chat not working over the Easter break? Was it easy enough organising with JBHIFI?

          • +1

@Sapiens: The porting is done straight away, easy.
I just have not had the time to cancel

    • Do you know if the deal also applies to the XL one?

      • If i recall the deal for xl is not as good as these normal 9 pro.

    • which JB Hifi store in Syd is this please @wewehalim

      • +1

        World square

    • Previously similar deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/873058 with an extra $350 gift card

      • i have read this. that $350 is not because of phone trade?
        that's very great.

well, if you are in no rush, can just wait for google 10 to come out. I read that price point of the new 10 would be similar to 9, so I believe they should have the same deal

  • Can this be done with an esim or must it be physical for the port?

    • +1

      Yes, used optus free esim

  • Guys, can we cancel the plan online or through app? This one here said we will need to call or go in store

    Can I cancel my plan?
Yes, you can cancel your plan at any time by calling us on 13 50 75 or visiting a JB Hi-Fi store. When you cancel, your service will be disconnected immediately. We won’t refund any money you’ve already paid and you’ll need to pay out any remaining Voucher Repayment Fee.

    • +1

I cancelled using live chat on JB hi-fi app

  • Now can get iPhone 16 for $0 with same deal… not bad

  • +3

I cancelled the next day, paid 799.97 cancellation fee. Couldn't get the $99 waived unfortunately even though I didn't use the SIM.

Looks like you can get the bigger storage sizes on the 9 Pro if you were willing to pay the difference.

Also used ALDI mobile SIM to port in.

So total cost is 799.97+99+5=903.97 for me

    • Same. Also please stop copying my hardware purchases.

      • Haha I was first 🥇

    • +1

Looks like I didn't get charged the $99 for some reason so that's good. I might have gotten a different total cost since I already had a Telstra account.

      • -1

I would say better to be charged the $99 then get it refunded.

Which means you pay $766 in total vs $799.

      • Ditto.

  • +4

Cancelled this morning. Also advised no $99 refund for first month.
    Ported from $5 ALDI sim.

Regarding the user posting about potentially needing to pay for the phone or higher JB voucher, from what I can see with my invoice and contract they are seperate transactions.
I have an invoice from JB with the phone with no details of a mobile plan.
The Telstra contract states $800 voucher with max $800 fee to cancel.

    • What is your total payout mate?

      • +1

The same as the OP details:
        $865.67 ($766.67 + $99)

        • You can try calling again to get the $99 refunded. I've had luck with that in the past.

          • @CodeXD: Yes thanks. I will try again in a couple of days when the monthly payment and fee have cleared.

            • @takingsideshc: Do you cancel it via live chat or other mean?
I see some user said the cancellation is 800 + $99(first month)

      • Thanks mate.

        Awesome deal!

    • -3

Hmmm. Firstly, I note I'm not a lawyer. But my understanding is there's still an implicit contract going on here that connects the two transactions together, established by you buying the phone using the deal. (Essentially: why would they independently give you a phone for free?) So I think that by agreeing to the deal (taking the phone in exchange for agreeing to the mobile phone plan), you've modified the contract (even if written on the receipt) in the way specified by the deal. My opinion, from what I've read online is that, to be legally secure, you'd have to tell them you intend to take advantage of the lower cancellation fee, and have them still accept the deal. (Thus ensuring there's no unilateral mistake / editing the contract orally to ensure you only have to pay $800 dollars cancellation.)

Still, as it's written down as $800, they hopefully won't actually chase people about this, because it would cost them more to go to court to extract the rest of the value.

      • +1

        "you've modified the contract"
Do you have any legal basis for this? I don't understand what you're trying to say

        • By "modified the contract" I mean you've essentially appended the terms of the deal (the text provided either on the page where the product is displayed, or in store on the note next to the product) onto the original contract (the pdf you get from Telstra). The text of the deal specifies that:

The Google Pixel 9 Pro 128GB (referred to as the “JB Hi-Fi Voucher” in the Telstra Terms and Conditions available at www.telstra.com.au/jbhifi-mobile-terms) replaces the dollar value of the Voucher in the Critical Information Summary and will be available to you instore after connection approval by Telstra.

It's that "referred to as" bit that's doing the modification.

Some people have contended that what gets printed out comes in two parts: the receipt for the phone, and the phone contract, which reads as the standard $800 contract. Thus, having only signed the original contract, you are only liable for that original contract. They fail to understand that you can enter into a contract without signing anything. (For example, by voicing agreement, or by undertaking an action, like paying for and then taking a product out of a store.)

This is my understanding: by taking the phone, you have accepted the additional contract of the deal: that text next to the phone which is why one can get the Pixel for $99 upfront in the first place. That deal changes the meaning of the original contract to be at the price of the phone. (Even if it doesn't get written down into the contract that is printed off and you sign.) If this were ever brought up in court (an unlikely occurrence, as it would probably cost them more than what they loose from this scheme), you would probably loose, and be liable for breach of contract. (Although it is possible that printing out a different contract would be considered a misleading practice under the consumer law, in which case you would be fine.)

Also, it has been reported on a previous thread (by a staff member) that you can ask the staff about the maximum (say, you notice the discrepancy on the printed receipt), and they will say that $800 is the maximum repayment. If they do this, you're in the clear, because they would be making an additional representation which they are now bound by. (But they also say that if you indicate you will cancel, they will refuse the sale, so don't do that if you want to take advantage of the deal.)

Now, having said all this, people throughout the several previous threads about this deal have very happily taken advantage of this deal, and have a new phone for cheap, with no-one majorly cross at them. I'm happy and glad it worked out for them. But as a temperamental over-worrier, technically they are in the wrong, and my uptight nature will not allow me to expose myself to such risk. But everyone should act at their own risk tolerance.

      • -1

You are correct you are not a lawyer.

  • +9

Okay I got the pixel 9 pro 256 and did the following:

    1. Got an amaysim $10 28 day Sim and activated it
    2. Went to jb and asked to buy the 256 version
    3. Already had a Telstra account so was easier, showed ID, went through the process with dude.
    4. Asked if the $30 for $300 voucher works, he said if it doesn't he'll take 30 off anyway. But it worked fine at checkout scanning from my email voucher.
    5. Paid $99 for first month, then $117 for the phone. They used the $1700 voucher immediately on the phone purchase. So only cash changing hands was $216
    6. Didn't insert the Sim so it's not activated. Waited til next day and went on chat on JB hi-fi app and asked to cancel it as I have another service I thought was ending thisonth but still has 6 months. Cancel ETF few was $766.59. said o approve of it all. Cancelled straight away.
    7. Went into Telstra app and it shows the 766, paid it immediately.
    8. Will call or chat Telstra once the $99 is no longer "pending" in my bank account and ask for refund since I never used the Sim or plan.

Total cost of pixel 9 pro 256 is 766+117=883…
    Great deal!

Typing this with my new phone!!

Ask me if anyone needs clarification

    • Nice one!

To confirm steps 6 and 7, you were issues with two invoices but only paid one?

      • +1

I pad at the store for the first month $99, then separately for the phone minus the $1700 applied from gift card, minus $30 for the coupon, so was $117

Then next day cancelled the plan via chat on the JB hi-fi app, cos it only shows there

Then I paid the early termination fee of $766thru the Telstra app as it appeared on my Telstra account.

        Sorry for late reply

    • Do you know how long theyre offering the 256GB model for 150$? (-30$ PERKS which ends COB Monday 21st)

      • +2

        The $30 only until monday
The 256gb until 23rd. Its not for $150, they have $1700 off from the $1847 phone price. Well its pretty much $150

    • have you managed to get $99 refund?

      • +1

It hasn't cleared from PENDING in bank yet but when I does I will try. Never put the Sim in so should be good I reckon.

        • cool. still PENDING from my account.

The invoice of $766 has come but it seems like it will get debited next month.
I wish I could pay this with JB gift card lol

        • I just got approved with my $99 refund today

    • Do you need the amaysim SIM? Can I just get a new SIM from JB hifi instead of going to Aldi/Amaysim?

      • I'm just going by the deal title that says port in only

      • I got it cos it isn't Telstra service which seems like it can port over easier. I needed the Sim cos the sales dude smsd it a few times for security codes thru the whole process.

    • Found it - expired deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/902275

What is the 30 for 300 deal again? I am assuming this is an older OZB thing you had to register for and no longer available?

  • Could be a stupid question but does this phone remained locked to Telstra or is that no longer a thing?

    • +1

      No longer a thing

  • Have you noticed a difference between the 8 pro and 9 pro?
I wonder if it is worth the upgrade

    • +1

Not for 8 pro I reckon, Im doing 7 Pro to 9 Pro for longevity and no curved edges

      • Thanks , I might just wait the 10 coming out soon…

    • +1

8 pro to 9 pro, I think you can wait for 10

    • +2

The 9 Pro is significantly smaller than the 8 Pro. The 9 Pro XL is the successor to the 8 Pro. And no, I'd wait for the 10 before considering an upgrade.

  • Anyone know if they get free Google One with the Pixel 9 Pro via JB Hi-fi?

  • Anyone able to do this online or over the phone?
Im on holidays znd the nesrest JB is 2 hours each way

    • In store only.

  • do you have to port a number or can you grab this deal as a new Telstra customer?
