Breville Dual Boiler Espresso Machine $1099 ($1089 via Price Beat) + Delivery ($0 with Uber/ C&C/ in-Store) @ The Good Guys

970

Price is similar to black Friday deals from last year. Have been waiting for it to drop below $1000 but don't think it is going to happen.

I have successfully price matched with JB Hi-fi, who are giving a $100 gift voucher with the machine. Thanks to schumi5 for the suggestion.

Obvious promo time on this product. $1197 at JB with bonus $100 gift card (if you have JB gift cards to burn). Mother's Day around the corner, may drop a little more. Hard to know. Will probably come down to cashback.

    • Based on its history, I think we will see a few deals on this but I don't think we will see it under 1k.

Hot damn I love this machine. Partner had one, then after like 4 years we bought another one as the old one was shot. Has been a good send whilst working from home everyday.

My partner continues to use it, I have moved to a simple moka pot to brew, but then still use the machine for steaming milk.

Definitely recommend a good grinder like the standalone Breville one (we have this) and it's great as I adjust the grind setting for the Moka pot (30) and then adjust back (14) for my partner for when she uses the machine.

Think we paid just under $1000 maybe 2.5 years ago but price has since been beyond that.

Edit: Make sure you hit price beat button, maybe get it for $1089 from TGG

    • +2

I would hope it lasts more than 4 years, I'm still on a 5yo bambino plus

      • We actually think we might have got stung on the repairer we went to; but it was pretty much during lock down and my partner didn't think to get a second opinion. We should have taken it somewhere else for another opinion. Oh well, learn from the mistake moving forward.

      • I've clearly touched some pretty magical wood for my good fortune - had this bad boy for 7 years, shot clock at just over 6000, and hasn't missed a beat in that time (except that one time I made the error of actually descaling and it tasted like shit for 3 weeks…).

      • +1

Mine is 10 years old in August.
Had it serviced once under warranty and once more a bit later at my own cost.

Descaled twice since then (only filtered water going in). I chemical flush once every 2-6 weeks depending on usage. Had to replace the solenoid at some point which I did myself (parts from bigwarehousespares). Replaced the pf gasket recently as a precaution. Bought all the gaskets to replace the internal ones but have been too lazy to fix…
Maybe have them on standby once something goes.

Still works like a charm. Milk wand leaks a bit when on and idle or immediately after being turned off - so I just make sure it is positioned over the drip tray. I suspect the volumetrics don’t work great (never did tbh) but I manually weigh espresso out for every shot - so no issues.

I think how long the machine lasts depends on how often it is used and how well it is maintained. Obviously going to be worse if pulling 8 shots a day. Compared to 5x uses in a week, or if you’re not keeping it clean, or undertaking preventative maintenance.

      • +1

We've had ours and the grinder for 10 years.

    • +2

      DF54 and DF64 are good grinder option's

Use the right water type and it should last a good amount of years

They upgraded the O rings to compression fittings in recent years on all these in recent years too

    • +1

I wouldn't call it a good machine if it dies after 4 years. honestly, I'd pay more to get a proper European machine that would last decades and is easy to fix and service

      • +4

Have had my Dual Boiler 10 years and going strong.

      • +2

Might be easy to fix and service but don’t be surprised to pay $500+ once a year servicing on European brands such as La Marzocco, Lelit or Profitec

        • +3

it's pretty easy to learn how to do it yourself

          • +1

@derdew: If you can do it yourself what’s the difference in maintaining the cheaper breville vs European one?

        • +2

For those who don't know, Lelit are now owned by Breville.

      • European machines never break down in under 4 years?

        • +1

never say never bro! if you learn how to properly clean your machine and do minor servicing (changing a few bits), then I expect they'd run pretty smoothly for years. certainly wouldn't need to throw them out after 4 years- that is appalling!!

          • +1

@derdew: It's a difference with Breville, most people don't service it. If it cared the same as European brands, it would last a comparable time.
It's not a disposable machine, it can be serviced.

            • +5

@DmytroP: You're correct that most people don't service and maintain them well, but beyond that the machines use inferior quality components and have questionable design choices compared to European machines.

Given similar servicing & maintenance (whether that's to a schedule, or totally neglected), a Breville will almost always last a shorter period of time than a European machine.

Where poor maintenace really hurts the Brevilles though, is that when there's issues a lot of people will ignore it or work around them for a while, and those issues go from being relatively minor to causing massive amounts of damage to multiple components.

It's not uncommon to see a Breville that's ~5 years old and beyond reasonable repair, whereas it's not uncommon to see a 20 year old European machine that's still working fine.

I think they offer a lot for the price, and make a fantastic cup of coffee, but they aren't made for longevity.

Source: worked in that field for 10+ years.

              • @wintermadness: I totally agree. Even independent cafes don't service their machines enough.

The debate remains the same though.

Do you buy a European machine and get it serviced?
Do you buy a Breville and run it into the ground and sell off and replace which would be cheaper.

I purchased my BDB for $799 and sold it off for $400 4 years on once the steam boiler started leaking.

My profitec is $3600 worth but I'll keep it for 10 years. It does make better coffee.

Would I pay north or $1000 for a BDB? Hell no…. They land them for $400

      • The age of a machine has little to do with how long it lasts. The way / frequency it is used is much more of a measure.

The dual boiler is entirely repairable at home with very little effort. Replacement parts are cheap and readily accessible. Your comment suggests very little knowledge of the BES920 machine.

    • +3

The machine is a trooper and relatively easy to service.

Had mine since 2017 and it's a workhorse. It goes through parts, but that's not surprising for consumer grade kit. I've replace O-rings twice (once every 3-4 years), one pump and one solenoid valve, and put in metal shower screen. I'm pretty sure the old solenoid just needs a descale to get it working again, and it's likely the old pump is also repairable.

About the only hard part of the maintenance is knowing that there are some sharp edges you will find while doing the o-rings. Plan on losing some skin (blood for the blod god gets the best coffee) or get a set of haemostats.

You could try your luck getting JBhifi to match the good guys price, they potentially say no due to the bonus gift card jb offering but worth asking.
Also there is the option to use the $30 perks coupon(cant be combined with price match i dont think) unless you go instore for them to match

    • +8

I was just able to price match with JB hi-fi.
$1099 and $100 JB hi-fi voucher. Not bad!!
      Thanks for the suggestion

      • Any chance the price match voids the bonus?

        • +1

Online chat person said the gift voucher would still be sent

          • @solidmuzza: Can confirm, I got them to price match and got the $100 gc

  • Can someone recommend a good entry level one? Good bang for bucks? Sick of drinking instant coffee, Would like to get a proper machine

    • +4

Do you want to step to barista coffee or happy to stay brewed? If the latter try a Moka Pot like buddy above or an AeroPress. Ideally you’d get a separate grinder, get a Hario or Porlex conical hand grinder. You can pick all this up off FB marketplace for cheap. Then just some decent beans (apparently Aldi is good at the low end but I run Lime Blue, they always have deals on here).

      • +1

This is good advice if you like filter/black coffee. Had many good years from my aeropress and still use it for travel/hiking.

Re. the other option: I moved to a breville bambino (non plus) to be able to make espresso and frothed milk drinks, and can recommend the machine. They're pretty regularly around $300 with promos. Refurb stock can sometimes be had from breville eBay for even less.

You'll want a separate grinder to go with it, I'm using a Kingrinder K6 which is great value if you don't mind a manual grinder. Electric is convenient but substantially more expensive for a quality grind.

There are plenty of good options of course, but I have no complaints for a total of around $400 for grinder and machine. After I got everything dialed in (and my skill improved) I'd say it's cafe quality.

And can vouch for Aldi coffee, it's fine :)

      • +1

Agree with most of this but spending slightly more on a hand grinder to avoid Hario or Porlex is definitely worth the extra money.

    • +3

The Breville bambino plus is the usual recommendation for a good entry level espresso machine.

You will also need a grinder, df54 is a common recommendation.

I'd suggest not getting the Breville grinder, it's too inconsistent. I'd also avoid the Breville barista express, as you can't upgrade the grinder and machine independently.

      • +2

The in built grinders on the newer brevilles are made by Baratza, so they are pretty decent.

        • I have a fairly new Barista Pro with a Baratza grinder. I can confirm that it's pretty good. I can't comment on its longevity, but it's a good grinder.

        • That's good to hear, my 2021 BSG was very inconsistent.

    • +2

I would go for the Breville Infuser - currently on sale for $399 - https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B00RFAQXTK.
Had one for 5 years and it hasn't missed a beat. It is getting on a bit though, so considering getting another as a spare.

      • Whoah, that's a good discount. Interested. Anything I should be aware of? Why is this one so much cheaper than OP's?

        • No idea why the current discount - the price bounces around a bit. The long term averages is ~$500 according to https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B00RFAQXTK - considerably cheaper than the $899 "RRP". Though it has been trending up, and has even spiked to its RRP recently. Perhaps that killed their sales so they are overcompensating?
I'm not aware of any problems with the model, and mine has been awesome. It has a heat block, not a boiler, but if you aren't a purist or pumping out coffees all day I don't see that as a huge negative. A great little entry level unit.

      • This is an incredible deal! I have the infuser and it's great. I have also used the boiler model here and it's absolutely better than the infuser - but $400 is a cracking good price for this very capable machine.

    • JBHIFI is price matching this , Plus offering $100 gift card . Which brings the price to $989.

  • +1

Ugly beast of an appliance but can’t deny the bang for buck features for those starting out. Way better dead than the yanks would pay for this!

  • Oh man this is tempting, I did not need to see this. Been wanting to upgrade from my BBE for awhile now. JB, just matched the price for me as well.

Is this machine good enough to be able to start getting decent results on lighter roasts? I've got a Eureka Mignon for a grinder.

      I pulled the trigger!

Just made a beautiful Kenyan single origin flattie this morning using one of these 😋

JB HiFi online price matched and confirmed I would still get the $100 gift card and coffee pack. Good deal.
I have had this machine for about 7 years, been solid machine,.

    • I bought one as well from this deal and also got the same reassurance from chat. How does the $100 voucher come to light? Is in an email in a couple of weeks? Something like that?

  • bought the sea salt color from Good Guys for 1187 with 10% cashback last week.

    • Pretty good! Looks like a good colour

    • Not sure who down votes this lol

  • How much are people paying for a overhaul service on these? Ours is due and debating just getting this over fiddling with a 7 year old machine

    • Might be better off selling your machine on FB marketplace for 500 and buy new one

  • +2

Price matched Amazon ($1,089) with JB via chat. Confirmed you still get the beans voucher (4x250g) and the $100 voucher. Was waiting for a sub $1k price for a while, but this is pretty much that. Cheers

    • -1

That makes it sub 1000 or not?

    • Where is the Beans Voucher from ( 4 x 250 g ) ?? I bought the coffee machine too . But I didn’t see any advertisements Nor did the Sales man told me about it . Many thanks !

Pulled the trigger. Now, does anyone have recommendations on bottomless portafilter and basket to use?

    • Don't bother… You're going to regret it a lot. Looks great on video but dialling in, perfecting the tamp etc you'll pull your hair out. It turns extremely messy if you arent perfect at making espresso.

      • Are u saying dont bother getting 3rd party accessories as it will be 'messy' but using stock portafilter and filter basket are ok?

        • +1

Yep… Absolute waste of money. Depending on your grinder you may want a dosage ring to prevent spills but they're $19 from Amazon.

Id buy a good tamper such as barista hustle $60 but that's honestly it apart from a tamp mat.

Breville do a good basket so no reason to upgrade to an IMS or any other precision basket. Unless you've got James Hoffman tastebuds you'll never ever know the difference.

I don't see any difference in show screens either and I've been pulling too many shots since 2010.

Even back in the day we never had all these toys.. just buy a good grinder, tamper and tamp mat and scales if you're not reaching for a grinder which doses by weight. It's all you need

          • @Combo64: Thanks for the insights.
How about bottomless portafilter? I'd like to see if it's chanelling or not and it's rather satisfying looking at the crema ..
Do you have any suggestions on that?

            • @OzFrugie: That's what a good grinder does it grinds particles in uniformity to prevent channeling that's why a good grinder is the most important thing.

The rest will come down to a good Tamper which is generally 58.5 millimeters and an even tamp you can use something like an OCD a distribution tool which helps a lot but a good grinder is going to help more as it prevents clumping and has more even grind size.

I would never buy naked Porter filter they're too messy it looks cool on video but you'd use like 500 grams of coffee just to dial it in to perfection it has to be really on Point.

  • Ordered it yesterday from JB.
Seems they'll give me an option of Stainless or Sea Salt? Anyone that's in the know got any thoughts. I haven't seen one before.

  • Anyone else still missing the $100 from JB? Time period for them to provide has passed now.

    • I havent got my $100
