[eBay Plus] MSI B650 Gaming Plus Wi-Fi AM5 ATX Motherboard $223.20 Shipped @ Smarthomestore via eBay

270
APL20

Still in the PC building journey.
I had already bought MSI B650 m gaming plus for $199 from Umart but my 9070 XT doesn't fit. Both xFx swift & Saphire Pulse don't fit in B650m

I think this is a great price.
Compared to Msi b650m this has 12 phase vrm vs 10 phase.
20 Gbps usb-c port vs 10 in the back

your graphics card not fitting will be a case problem, not a motherboard problem…

    • +7

Nope the width of both my gpu is 6.5 cm and 6.1 cm which blocks the side of the motherboard header.
Someone warned me in the other deal and it was true.
Asus steel 9070xt would fit but i dont want to buy that as it doesnt seem to oc too much but not too sure.

      • +3

kinda offsets the savings, but a vertical gpu mount will get you going if you are in a bother..

        • But isnt vertical gpu placement bad for heat dissipitation in the case?

          • @kisshell9: Would depend on your case really, I have no issues with my card mounted vertically.. but it also has 3 fans on the bottom and 3 on the top

      • are you able to return the old motherboard?

is the only difference between model is

12 phase vrm vs 10 phase.
20 Gbps usb-c port vs 10 in the back

how about will the GPU fit better (ie not blocking header) on this board compared to yours?

        • Ya. This one is full atx. Width of the gpu doesnt matter.
I am planning on returning the b650m to umart as it is still sealed.

      • what are pc parts have you got already?
how much paid and which store?

what parts you still have to get?

I am also starting a similar journey

        • I have got XFX swift 9070 xt/Pulse (Will sell one later but probablty the pulse) , lexar cl30 32 gb ram, ROG Strix 750 W PSU, 7800x3d , and this motherboard will replace the smaller m version.
Got cheap 990 pro ssd. Thermeltake 240mm aio that i posted as a deal here recenty. All the parts were posted in Ozbargain except corsair 3500x icue link which i got an open box from ebay for sweet price.
My main goal would be to make the build cheaper then techfast or Nebula by having pateince and getting all these parts in better price.

@kisshell9: I am in a similar situation with slightly different parts, just need a case and PSU. I grabbed this mobo to pair with 9800x3d, crucial ram, gskill memory - no real rush so just grabbing parts as they come up with decent deals.

Will keep using my 3070 until I decide what direction to go with gpu.

            • @Baa:

don't you have to test these parts ideally early for easier replacement.

are your parts mainly from ebay plus discounts e.g 20/22 % off deals
and/or do you buy from any other stores?

              • @pinkybrain: Realistically this is going to be over 3 months, reasonable in terms of warranty I think, if it was a longer period maybe.

I think most of them have been through eBay plus through stores like Centrecom, this in most cases has ended up being cheapest. I will probably get the last few pieces for scorptec direct as the fractal north is on sale and the last few pieces will push it to free shipping.

Being in Perth this ends up being the only way to reasonable prices given there is really only PLE and msy here, and I find lately most of the stock of over east so it is hard to pickup from a storefront.

It is more about the easy return + refund or replacement etc.. rather than warranty

                  90 days seems long

ebay has 60 days easy return/refund
then you need to deal with paypal and if it is faulty I think they tell you it is warranty issue and need to contact the seller..

Are you able to get the price lower or close to same or higher than techfast / nebula deal price?

what is the reason for not just buying a techfast / nebula deal ?

          • @kisshell9:

My main goal would be to make the build cheaper then techfast or Nebula by having pateince and getting all these parts in better price.

Can you create some google sheets with your price and where you bought from (if it was using what sale e.g. ebay plus 20% off etc, amazon limited deals etc)?

Do you think it is even possible to get cheaper than techfast or nebula?

They buy in bulk so get the parts cheapest possible..
The GPU is the most expensive part and then they use the probably the cheapest parts possible (bare minimum) in the rest of the build to get max profit while selling it for as low as a price as they can get..

IF we buy our own same GPU, that accounts for the largest chunk of the budget
and not sure how much left to get the rest of the parts (maybe can only buy a CPU and motherboard) VS total cost of techfast/nebula deal.

            • @pinkybrain: Gpu aside it is definitely cheaper to get cheaper or close to their prices. My 9800x3d be build minus a gpu is probably give or take about 1600 to 1800 - while allowing me to choose my parts.

              • @Baa: I am sure you can get close to… to the price of a prebuilt from techfast / nebula..

The issue of building yourself is that if the machine doesn't boot up.. working out of which parts or incompatible / faulty….
.. if you dont have any spares.. it can be daunting to troubleshoot..

I've been building my own machines, for the last 30 years..
yet. it he last few years.. I bought.. quite a few prebuilts from Techfast and evatech…
as its far cheaper than what I can guy the parts for…

                • @Kelvin: I am closer to 25 years myself - and to be honest I was close to going with a couple of nebula builds, the issue is there is always a couple of tweaks I would want to make and as soon as you move away from the standard prebuild offering it doesn't become worth it.

I think in general my big issue is with their cooling and case options, which is where they save money - budget AIO's (because it gives a premium look adnd feel), RGB fan heavy builts. I look at think usually appealing visually if that is your sort of thing - where for me I would rather have a more sensible, low RGB and quiet build that still lets me push performance.

100% I recommend anybody who asks me what to get for a PC I link them to techfast (budget) or nebula (higher end) especially as it saves me from having to help select parts or assist with build when frankly I don't have the time or desire to do it for anybody else. For me the case of spending a few hundred more and getting exactly what I what is worth the cost, and I can still do it cost effectively.

I will also be moving off a fully functional build, so if something doesn't work I won't be sitting without a desktop - sure it is an 8700k/3070 but it is doing just fine, it just means my kids have to wait a while longer for it to be their machine.

If I was due for GPU upgrade it may have been a different story as I don't think I could meet those prices, but I think I could get close.

Just for reference, my shopping list without being too focused on getting the best deal ever:
                  9800X3D (ebay plus) - $837
                  Peerless Assassin (Amazon) - $55
                  MSI B650 (this deal) - $223
                  Crucial T500 (ebay plus) - $191
                  Lexar Ares (Amazon) - $155

                  Planned -
                  Fractal North (Scorptec) - $199
                  PSU - $150ish

                  Total - $1800

Now look at the last couple of 9800x3d builds:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/891317 - $3299 - I don't think I could have gotten close to this one, but also I am not going to pay 2k for a gpu
                  https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/900247 - $3759

I 100% could have cheaped out on mobo, ram, ssd, case and psu to bring my build down to $1300/$1400 and eventually add in a 5080 when prices eventually calm down.

Both xFx swift & Saphire Pulse don't fit in B650m

3 slot cards don't fit in some "m" boards. This isn't anything new or specific only to those cards/boards.

If you want to use a 3 slot card in an "m" board you need to make sure that you are buying one where the x16 slot is the top slot.

I can't speak on the xFx but I'm posting this from my pc that has a Saphire Pulse 9070XT in an MSI B650M right now.
    see: https://imgur.com/a/1p1Wl66

    • Omg that would be great if it fits.
      Is this same mobo mate?
It doesnt cover your mobo header?
Is it possible to send a pics of ur case mate.

      • gonna need about 30 minutes, my phone battery is currently charging.

        I'll post a pic then.

          • @fimmwolf: So in the last picture i was worried about those header in the mobo that is covered by the width of the gpu not the length of the gpu.
So you were able to use all the motherboard headers in the bottom of the motherboard hey?
I have not actually opened my mobo but when i just try a trial above the board it feels like it covers those. Umart will not refund if i open the plastic so havent opened it yet.
Anyways now i am sure the pulse will fit so i am happy . Thanks!

      • what mobo header is it covering?

  • Dang just bought one the other day for $280. Was super easy to build on and bios seems decent no complaints so far.

    • how is the board and any problems/issues?

some people are saying there is a critical issue

      https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/1bxdy76/does_the_…

      • Seems like a fair few of those come down to user error like one guy had incompatible ram configuration, and the last guy went into and changed bios configuration before installing windows which is think can cause problems and i personally avoid that.

My boot times are about 20 secs and I found the whole set up really smooth personally.

You might be subjecting yourself to confirmation bias if you’re looking for posts with issues with the board. I only heard good things beyond bought mine. Keep in mind you’re buying the cheapest ATX AM5 board available so don’t expect it to be insane.

        • You might be subjecting yourself to confirmation bias if you’re looking for posts with issues with the board.

Was not specifically looking for issues.. so there is no confirmation bias
Just google the board to see reviews and saw that was the second link in the results

          https://www.google.com/search?q=MSI+B650+Gaming+Plus+Wi-Fi+A…

Generally it is good idea to google the parts you gonna to buy to see reviews and see if there is any well known reported issues..

Confirmation bias means you already made up your mind about something
and looking for information that supports it.

          • @pinkybrain: That’s cool man. It is indeed smart to do your research. I wasn’t having a go. Note the fact I said "might" when I said “ You might be subjecting yourself to confirmation bias if you’re looking for posts with issues with the board”. You also did ask me specifically if there were any issues/ problems with it.

All I'd say is don't get too hung up on a few reddit posts about specific problems. It’s not an intended as an insult, just a caution. I personally found the positive reviews to heavily outweigh the negative in my research. And that is reflected in the link you just posted as well as the vast majority of comments on those reddit post and even the youtube video you shared earlier. My experience has been fine and that's the last I will say on this matter.

  • Hey I have a xfx mercury 9070XT working on my MSI b650M gaming plus wifi

    • For real!
Looks like this card is a little thicker than the swift.
      Cheers!

  • Might need to update the price I am getting AU $237.15 with the APL15 code. May have been price increased by seller.

    • You need to use APL20 which requires ebay plus.
