  • Interesting… why would you buy the UDR7 over this?

    • +15

      The main differences are…

      UDR7
      1 x 10G SFP+ port.
      4 x 2.5G Ethernet ports (1 x Ethernet port has built-in PoE with a 15.4W maximum).
Can run all the Unifi apps (Network, Protect, Access, Talk and Connect).

      Express 7
      1 x 10G Ethernet port.
      1 x 2.5G Ethernet port.
      Unifi Network only.

      • +1

        Thx

    • +1

I have a UDR7 on order (to replace my original UDM) - just waiting for more of the damn things to arrive in Australia

I also debated whether to get the UX7 vs the UDR7 (vs UCG-Fiber) but decided on the UDR7 (for $528) in the end - I needed the extra LAN ports and a PoE - which yes I could have managed via an extra switch - but whilst the switch with 1G+PoE ports is ~$200 (USW-Lite-8-PoE) if I wanted to upgrade the main links in my home to at least 2.5G I'd need an extra USW-Flex-2.5G-8-PoE (~$400 each)

(or maybe a USW-Flex-2.5G-5 and a PoE injector)

      • If you don't care about VLANs and don't really need multiple PoE ports, TP-Link 2.5 Gbps unmanaged switch is ~$90, but USW-Flex-2.5G-5 was $125 a few weeks ago.

If you don't mind manually configure VLANs, there are cheap 8 ports 2.5Gbps PoE switches for ~$120 or less on AliExpress. Cheap and nasty, but do the job.

        • Thanks - I'm already fully invested in a Unifi network (with multiple VLANs across a UDM + 4 Unifi AP's + a couple of the older 8 Port PoE switches plus one of the new USW-Lite-8-PoE and the older USW-Flex-Mini

I've already got the UDR7 and a USW-Flex-2.5G-8-PoE on order to form the base of a upgrade from 1G main trunks and switching to at least 2.5G (and potentially in future 10G (e.g. if I add a copper 10G SFP+ to the UDR7))

I do like the Flex-Mini's (both the older 1G and newer 2.5G versions - and convenient they run off PoE) but they have some limited switch capabilities (e.g. some limitations with tagged VLANs), and also no PoE output

          • @Remorhaz: Flex Mini 1G version does have the limitation of either all tags traffic or all untagged traffic on a given port. The 2.5G version doesn't have such version. However, if the 1G port is connected to a managed switch, then you can set it to use all tags traffic.

I do mix and match so I have UniFi gears mixed with other gears. Can't help it, I was able to get 2 mesh routers for $90 and re-purpose them as access points using OpenWRT (it has 3 ports, I have VLANs going on them). No need to worry about PoE since they come with power adapters. Also bought a 8 port PoE gigabit managed switch for $45 (clearance), had to manually setup the VLAN config. That PoE switch is powering Flex Mini 1G (if the PoE switch only supports gigabit ethernet, there is no point for me to connect it to USW-Flex-2.5G-5.

I am definately buying one of these sometime to replace my original UDM.
Anyone think this might get cheaper over time or is that unlikely with Ubiquiti?

    • +3

      All tech gets cheaper overtime.
Unless supply can't keep up with demand due to COVID like events. Even then it's a temporary shift.

      • +1

Unless you talking about consoles… I still cannot believe that a PS5 costs MORE now than at launch!

        • +1

Yeah not sure why people would buy it even at the launch price. I guess not everyone is broke like me!

      • All tech gets cheaper overtime.

Except Ubiquiti gear seems to go in the opposite direction, it's infuriating! Not sure if it's exchange rate related or just Ubiquiti jacking prices.

Eg When the UDM-Pro came out there were multiple deals for it under $500, good luck getting it under $650 with a deal these days though.

    • +1

Other than wifi (which if you are using the access points etc) - why would you want this over the UDM?

      • +1

I still have the original Dream Machine UDM, which can handle about 80 mbps with the security features enabled.
This is supposed to have IDS/IPS throughput of 2.3 Gbps.

    • +1

It will be cheaper. Centrecom trying to clear these multiple times indicates demand on it is low. WiFi 7 tax is still high currently.

  • Damn I bought the dream machine special edition last year, but this is a solid product.

  • Thinking of jumping from Asus. How are the features? Like VPN etc?

    • How are the features? Like VPN etc?

VPN into your network or connection to a VPN like NordVPN?

    • +1

      Site-to-Site VPN
      Site Magic
      IPsec
      OpenVPN

      VPN Server
      Identity Endpoint One-Click VPN
      Teleport Zero-Configuration VPN
      WireGuard
      OpenVPN
      L2TP

      VPN Client
      OpenVPN
      WireGuard

      Tech specs.

    • You are buying into a complete ecosystem and management environment. The benefits rack up the more devices you have.

    • Wire guard and unifis much simpler app based version, fine for general use.
Has VPN client functionality that you would expect for 3rd parties

  • any deals on the UCG Fiber? really wanna future proof my network for the next 5+ years and i reckon that's the best bet. only shit thing its got 1 Poe+ port so only one AP. anyone know if Poe injectors work with with wifi 7 APs?

    • Honestly just get a poe switch to complement. It'll just make it easier to expand later/hard-wire any other devices down the line.

UCG fiber looks to be on my wish list too eventually.. I've got the UX Express currently and seems to miss out on a fair bit of fancier features probably due to the weaker specs. And network only app. I use a tp link poe switch for my UAC AP Pro and 2x poe connections to power and connect my ux express. (max like 15w, ux is 10w so works out. Means one less power adapter required!)

    • UCG fiber is hard to come across in Australia if you aren't paying the "TheTechGeeks" import price. I've been keeping an eye on Streakwave / City Tech to see when they have stock.

Honestly, by the time the UCG Fiber is in stock, Ubiquiti will probably launch the UCG Fiber Pro Max anyway.

Wifi 7 APs will probably need PoE+ power injectors

I'm going to give this a whirl - https://www.fs.com/products/183843.html - I've got ftth and am going to try bypass the ONU to go straight to my UDM.

      • +2

You can't bypass the NTD if you have nbn FTTP.

nbn fibre NTD —- Ubiquiti UDM router.

        • Hold my beer. These sticks can 'look' like the provider issued NTD.

          • @kiwizz: Others have tried and failed. Don't waste your time and money.

            • @Twix: Hasn't stopped me before :) - Will report back either way.

              • @kiwizz: Suit yourself. Even the new 2.5G and 10G FTTP NTDs are ethernet.

          • +1

@kiwizz: thats not the way it works, NBNco have specific requirements and devices can only be connected to the NTU, hence they can activate services on specific ports
You also dont know what sort of transceiver they are using on the other side, use the wrong one and you will burn the other sides transceiver

Long story short, it wont work

            • @lltravel: Well, I'm making progress. The interface is looping at the moment, but I can see the DHCP response from the ISP side so it's at least temporarily establishing. Best guess for why the DHCP response isn't being processed by the UDM is either how I'm trying to bridge via my switch, firmware issues on the UDM or VLANs. Will keep at it.

              • @kiwizz: There is no way around it and it's not the UDM, firmware or VLAN problems.

FTTP has been available since like 2012. You don't think someone else would have found a method by now? :-)

    • UCG-Fiber hasn't officially released in Aus yet, the only ones available are grey market imports which are 40% more and warranty through the local importer.

I've got a pre-order in with Streakwave and they're saying it's still likely 5 weeks weeks away from hitting any of the official sellers here.

  • Asus RT-AX86U covers 510m2, this does 140m2, couldn't find flint2 coverage, I have flint2 and Asus, why should I upgrade?

    • +1

      You don't have to.

Someone else mentioned that Ubiquiti gets better the more ubiquiti devices you tend to have as it's all integrated.. If your current wireless does everything you need it to do, don't change. But if you find it can't reach somewhere or lacks some features, you can get a cloud gateway from ubiquiti, add on an AP or two and mesh them for wider coverage overall.

      • +1

I really liked the ad guard feature on flint2, I can mesh Asus and flint2, both are very power routers for my 1gbps internet, in a small unit, maybe I should buy a house first then think about these dream machines

        • All apps with ads work like fully paid apps, plus, if I click on sponsored, it's blocked 😂

        • Yeah I think if you're in a unit there's probably no point changing. But if you end up buying a house, maybe running data runs throughout the house etc it might be worth it potentially to migrate over.

          • @ReaperX22: Great advice, I should think about where I want to put the APs, I think for a small 25-30sq house one AP on top floor and one on the ground should be enough, is there a way you can calculate coverage etc?

  • +4

Unifi stuff seems to be a lot more stable than anything else. No repeated reboots needed even with over 100 devices on my network. It isn't bullet proof though and there can be quirks. It's expensive but a worthwhile upgrade to overcome hassles of typical consumer grade networking equipment.

    • Do you use Unifi Protect and/or Access? Even with Unifi Network, my cloud gateway did a random reboot on me a few weeks ago. Nothing in the log and it was day time so can't be firmware update. When it was on an older firmware, it could not update some of my Unifi cameras. Those cameras went into this weird loop to attempt to upgrade and failed. Unifi doesn't want you to manually upgrade so there's very little info on how to do it (I had to check multiple forums).

When the main gateway rebooted, it takes longer to get ready than most routers. IPv6, if you don't use it with subnets, then it's okay. If you do, clearly Unifi has more work to do.

Might be great while it works, but a real pain when it doesn't. Also, a pain to get here cheap and we often have to buy from retailers with inferior after sales service.

      • No I just use network

  • Have one of these and it's great. Had to factory reset it two days in though due to weird issues loading certain websites on iPhones but this ceased following the reset. Paired it with the new WiFi 7 in-wall AP as well which was seamless.

    • Do you have the in-walls mounted low on the wall? If so, how does that affect coverage, speed etc?

      • +1

The setup I put in a couple years back has several IW mounted around power-outlet height but we made sure not to obstruct the APs. Coverage is just about as good as an overhead AP if unobstructed. I can't test the WiFi 7 speeds but am getting a reliable 500Mbps on my iPhone 13 Pro according to WiFiMan from ~15m away in another room.

I'd recommend trying out the design center design[.]ui[.]com to get a good idea of where to place the IWs. One of the worst placements we trialled was behind a TV, which just soaked up the signal.

  • +1

Got mine for $399 from Digilife on eBay ($429 minus the $30 voucher listed on the product page). Then got another few dollars off by using a discount gift card.

Have used unifi for 15+ years at work but this is the first one I’ve had at home - great unit (and a better deal than the UDR7 if you don’t need anything but Unifi network and have a BYO switch)

  • What's the best modem to use with this? I have one given to me years ago from TPG, the TP Link Archer VR1600.

    • +1

If you're still on a service that needs a modem, those VR1600s aren't terrible. If you're on FTTP or another service that doesn't require a modem, you won't need one to use this gateway.

      • Thanks 4slime.

  • How much of a pita is this product for someone who doesn't want to learn and tinker? Coz $400 wifi 7 tri band is what I've been wanting (provides it plays nicely with quest and PlayStation portal)

    • +1

It's super easy to set up with the app. Only hitch I had was the auto settings for your WAN connection try to request a static IP from your ISP, but it's super easy to change this to the correct settings to get online.

  • How does this perform as a mesh network device, what would be the best to add to cover the whole house?

    • Ubiquiti APs can mesh. Configure first and then place them around as you need. You would probably only need 2 to do an entire house, depending on the size of the home. I've got 2 APs for my house and it does very well.

I haven't done Ubiquiti's using the mesh, I've always cabled. But it is an option.

  • Anyone good with this stuff offer some advice?

Setting up a new home network on double story.

Have provisions to use 1 long range PoE ceiling mount unifi 6 per floor (2 total) decided 7 is overkill and don’t want any issues with fans to occur (tell me if wifi 6 is a bad move).

Will have about 8 lan ports around the house that need to be connected to the router. Cameras on a seperate system.

My main objective is to have a singular wifi connection with strong signal through the entire home.

A friend recommended Unifi Dream Machine SE - Router but it hasn’t been sub $1000 for ages and seems like overkill.

Would this Ubiquiti UniFi Express 7 Cloud Gateway Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 do the job or is there an alternative product I should be looking at?

Either way I can see me needed to add a PoE switch into the system or if these have PoE I only need 2 PoE ports for the ceiling mounts so just a gigabit switch should be enough?

Any help would be appreciated, this really isn’t my area of expertise.

    • +1

Your camera system, are you going with UniFi Protect cameras? If yes, then this device is insufficient since it doesn't run Protect app. Also, this device essentially create a 3rd spot with WiFi coverage (you have 2 access point provisioned).

If your friend suggested UDM-SE, I am guessing he also recommended UniFi access points and UniFi Protect cameras. Then, the one you want is probably Cloud Gateway Fiber (but it is currently a real pain to get one). Do bear in mind Cloud Gateway Fiber doesn't support as many cameras and UDM-SE. Also, if you DO intend to use UniFi Protect, you will need to buy the SSD tray if you get Cloud Gateway Fiber. Also bear in mind, unless you get a 4TB SSD, if you opt for 2K or 4K cameras, you won't be able to store much footage (you could do detections / events only recording, but for front of the house cameras, it is best to do continuous).

If it is not too late, I would recommend do more access point provision (you don't have to use them, but nice to have them just in case, 2 per floor (or 2 on the upper floor)), assuming you have the budget.

Need to know how big your house is (or going to be), your camera system (whether it will be PoE wired or it will run WiFi) and whether you have anything outdoor that needs WiFi coverage. Also, how important is WiFi 7 support to you (how many WiFi 7 devices you have (or will have)). Will you be ready for 2.5Gbps LAN (or 10Gbps LAN), basically do you have NAS or home server(s) with 2.5Gbps or faster LAN? Since the house is wired up, it will be up to 10Gbps capable.

      • This guy is a legend, sent me a PM with some great advice, thanks again.

For anyone wondering I’m not running cameras on my system and I have enough coverage with ceiling mounted PoE APs so this product wasn’t what I required.

Centre Com are doing another promo with the same discount, with the code DREAMMOM

Same discount for Unifi Dream Router 7 as well.

Another chance to get it if you missed out the first time!

I just picked one up after getting my UDR7. Love it!
