What are the servicing costs for this? Why can't I find the servicing costs on the MG website anymore?

  • +4

We all know it's a 8k build and the rest is taxes/fees.

If it was 12k it would be a bargain. You can buy a good second hand Jap car for this and it will outlive any MG and have a resale value.

    • +3

If it was 12k it would be a bargain.

In the real world of commerce a $1 item sells for $3. It’s time for you to wake up as no new car sells for $12k regardless of where it’s built or whatever the cost price you think it is.

      • -2

They sell for that in China..

        • Or maybe not……..

        • They sell for that in China

So now you’re expect China prices in Australia. 🤦‍♀️

          • -2

@freeb1e4me: Nope, just saying it costs buttons to make and it's impossible to make a good quality long lasting vehicle at this price. I'm not taking about cheap labour, material prices are the same across the globe.

Wanted to test drive a Petrol MG3 Vibe. (1) The Phone Number on the Website for MG Dealership is not answered. It is managed by a holding company that also manages other car brands. (2) Walk into one of the other car brands and ask for a test drive of MG. To their credit, they were good. But there is none available for test drive (3) Online Chat - I asked them to schedule a day/time with any nearby dealership. It has been close to a week, and no updates. With such customer service, I will stay away from MG.

I would rather roll in a fire ant nest naked than to drive one of these

Everytime when it comes to Chinese car ozbargainers say "Buy a Corolla", I don't really understand why people compare a 20k car with a 40k one.
Yes you can buy a Corolla for 20k, maybe made in 2017, with at least 80k odometer and ugly plastic interior, no warranty at all, but not everyone enjoy that, some people just prefer a new car with 10 years warranty, no matter how the warranty service is, it's still better than a used car with no warranty at all.

MG is not a reputational manufacturer, but they offer you a chance to get new car with warranty for only 20k.
Corolla? A car that sells for 18,000 AUD in China and is still steadily losing ground, getting completely overwhelmed by BYD, constantly raising prices in Australia to subsidize their operations in the Chinese market.

Back in 2015, the Corolla was only selling for around 20k in Australia. Ten years have passed, and yet wages in Japan and Thailand haven't changed significantly, Australia's car import duties have stayed mostly the same, and international shipping costs haven’t changed much either. So what exactly has caused the price to double?

I looked up a review and the ZR was 29k in 2015 https://www.carsales.com.au/editorial/details/toyota-corolla…

Adjusted for inflation thats pretty much what they sell for now.

    • This is Ozb for you 😆
Plus I like how people comparing the power of the car 🤣😂

  • Good price only if its an EV

  • +2

68.3kW/t and most of that only available when you get over 4000rpm is going to be pretty painful.

There area apparently quite a few battery electric vehicles at similar (if not cheaper) price heading our way over the next year. The instant torque of the BEV's should make them a much better drive.

  • Everything taking a dump on Chinese cars don't seem to realize they are the only thing most average Australians can purchase brand new for a somewhat decent price

    • +2

Why the need to purchase a brand new car though?

      • 10 Year Warranty, relative peace of mind, purchasing experience, many reasons. Not everyone wants to worry about finding a good used car, some people would rather just spend the money and have something new that just works for 3-6 years and trade/buy a new one.

        • +4

If you're going to offload it in 3-6 years then you definately shouldn't be buying a car like this new.

The economics for a car like this are great if you keep it 10+ years - if you want to eat all the depreciation by offloading it whilst it's still nearly new, then the economics are terrible.

Every time you change your car, you are paying for the depreciation. The only way this works out well is if you start with a used car that has already had a large chunk of the depreciation paid by the first owner.

    • +2

That's true but some are better than others. This one has only 3 stars ANCAP rating and likely isn't as good of a driving experience as the Haval Jolion, which has 5 stars and has been $24,000 recently.

The worst of all is probably the MG5 because of it's zero star ANCAP rating.

  • I wouldn't both with petrol cars.

    Landfill in a couple years.

    • Not exactly. If the price of EVs comes way down, crude oil demand will go down because of increased EV sales. This will reduce the cost of oil and hence petrol. So people will keep petrol cars going for a long while yet.

      • Petrol prices has never, and never will go down as fast or in the same percentage as global oil prices.

There's an entire chain of middlemen, from drillers to traders to refiners to transport to distribution and retail, and every single one of them has to be paid.

Cheap home solar back feeding into grids will make electricity much more abundant, and during the day, very cheap.

  • How much is a Yaris these days for this to be a deal?

    • Close to $30k I'm pretty sure…

  • Thanks Jai!

Why not get a Kia Picanto instead?

    • It’s a smaller car and less warranty…

      • +2

I mean you get 7 years warranty on the Kia, sure its not the 10 years of the MG, but the picanto blows the MG out of the water.

        • +1

2025 MG Vibe 81kw of power
2025 Kia Picanto 62kw of power

          Spend $5k more gets you:
2025 Haval Jolian 105kw of power
          2025 Cherry Omoda 5 108kw of power

Best value will always be a used Japanese sedan with low kilometres and warranty remaining

@freeb1e4me: I mean, are you really trying to compare pure power numbers between these small city commuter cars as justification for why the MG is the better car? For reference the power to weight ratio is almost the same, 62kw/t for the Kia, vs 68kw/t for the MG, hardly a noticeable difference.

Regardless, the driving dynamics of the picanto are far better than the MG which is notorious for being an awful driving experience. Take the picanto out on some tight twisties and you can have loads of fun, the suspension tuning is great.

Id wager you arent a car person and dont enjoy driving, an A to B commuter, which is perfectly fine. If the picanto didnt exist at this price point, then the MG would be justifiable. But its a no brainer if you're looking for a small city commuter car thats great on fuel, easy to park, but is also refined and can be taken on back roads for some fun.

            • @brifog:

Sure why not? It’s an easy metric for comparison as I’m not your personal answering machine. All you have provided is, “picanto blows the MG out of the water”…

62kw/t for the Kia, vs 68kw/t for the MG, hardly a noticeable difference.

Close to 10% difference. I’ll take that.

driving dynamics of the picanto are far better than the MG

The reviews say there’s not much difference in driving dynamics. Did you check out the reviews? Anyway, I recommend people take them both for a test drive as it usually is a personal preference. For me the picanto is too small and pokey with an outdated interior. It offers less power and less warranty

These things are 1199kg. How do they fare if you're hit by a truck?

    • +1

You are pretty much stuffed in any car if hit by a double b.

  • +3

10 year warranty is only as good as their intention to honour it. This has not been the experience of many, many people. Do your research before you get swept up in the paper-spec hype.

    Mods must be asleep today…

No. They sleep when it's a Tesla deal.

I would rather spend the extra few grand & get a Suzuki Swift Instead. Much better build quality & fuel efficiently. Plus come in a manual as well :)

  • +4

Wow. Some strong negative opinions here. I bought the MG3 excite model in February for my 18 year old daughter as a her first car and it’s been a good experience so far. TBH the main reason I bought it was because the car came at a good price point with 10 years warranty and road side assistant. I’m quite happy with the way it drives. Feature loaded including many safety features including lane assist, collision avoidance. The car is very capable, built well both interior one exterior. We actually looked at the Swift before and it was so underwhelming for $4K more with less warranty and very basic interior and exterior. If you don’t like the brand then to each their own. Go get a Corolla or whatever floats your boat.

Do yourself favour spend $2000 more and get Chery Tiggo 4.

And get much much better value for money car. You will thank yourself afterwards.

  • Probably better off with a Picanto, especially if you pick the manual.

  • noob question: for these not expensive cars, is comprehensive insurance worth it?
