@Kommodore: I think the point is, if you're buying a $20k car you're unlikely to be in the same market as a $80k car.

            • @itshammer: You will find that cars this cheap will lose less value than a more expensive vehicle, both in $ and % terms. The bottom end of the market has more demand.

And before you decide that this is different because the reputation of MG is so low, remember how many Holden Cruze you see on the road.

          • +1

            @Kommodore: Old mate thinking about buying a BMW M2 isnt cross-shopping a MG3

    • How many batteries so I need to instal to make this an electric car?

    • At least there ain’t much to loose at $21k

I remember the days when MG was a luxury car and Toyota was a poor man's car. Now MG is a poor man's car and Toyota is a luxury.

    • -8

      Toyota is anything but luxury.
I don't care about reliability, you'll never catch me driving one.

      • +3

They have cars other than Corolla and Camry.

        • -2

          RAV4!

          • @Fuzor: yawn

          • +1

@Fuzor: I was think more along the lines of the Toyota Century. It's a Japanese Rolls-Royce complete with V12 engine.

There's also the Lexus line-up, although that's a step down from the best of Toyota.

            • +2

              @JIMB0:

There's also the Lexus line-up, although that's a step down from the best of Toyota.

depends on what you want, for absolute perfection Lexus wins hands down with LC500 and LFA.

              • @dukeGR4: I'd be happy with either one of those. Not exactly Camry money though.

Bro has never been in a 300 series landcruiser clearly

        • How did we go from MG3 Vibe to a $100.000 car lol

        • I just looked it up and it doesn’t look luxury? Or is there a specific model I need to look at.

          • @michaelTito: Sahara or the Lexus version.

            • @JIMB0: I just looked up Sahara 300 series and it looked like the one I searched up before 😅. Idk why I was expecting bmw/Mercedes/porches type of luxury.

              • @michaelTito: Ay? What type of luxury is the BMW Mercedes and Porsche type?

                • @Flutterby: Well not Toyota that’s for sure.

I would disagree. And having owned what you have said as a luxury vehicle.

Might be true locally with Toyota and Lexus aiming at different target market. Overseas, Toyota offer models aimed directly at BMW and the like, arguably better. Century and Crown are the two prime examples.

If one consider BMW as a luxury vehicle, the Toyota Supra belongs to the same league. (Same car as a Z4 for that matter).

                    • -1

@Flutterby: just looked up Toyota Supra and it doesnt look luxury at all. look just like your typical corolla. also look at BMX Z4 and that is far superior than the Supra. idk how people can say its the same? what is the same between those 2?

                      • @michaelTito: "Toyota Supra", it's the same car as a BMW Z4 and even the engine is an inline from BMW.

If look is the only thing that is considered "luxury", I rest my case.

    • +4

I know what you are going for but 'luxury' isnt the word. Toyotas are expensive now but they are not luxury, they have lexus for that.

      • 100% agree Toyota isn’t luxury lol whoever say Toyota is luxury is either clueless or delusional

    • +4

      Toyota is a luxury

You can say this only in Ozb 😂😂😂

      • Toyota is many good things but luxury or fun ain't it.

        • +1

Not fun? Gr Crolla and gr Yaris are not fun? The supra is basically a BMW z4. So assuming both "luxury" and fun?

Despite the supra being a z4, the BMW folks were surprised on the additional QC Toyota has put into the supra, despite being the same car.

Also noted on one of the earlier comment that Toyota Century is a finely crafted luxury vehicle. In Australia, JDM imports such as the Alphart is nothing but a "luxury" people mover.

          • @Flutterby: Ah yep my bad ill try find one of those amongst the 9 billion camrys and corollas floating along.

            • @gakko: What is it about the Camry SL that is not "luxury"?

Maybe test drive one? It's much better than the old, particularly noise is well insulated.

Having said that, Lexus come with acoustic glass to further minimise noise, except for the now cut price UX entry. Though, this is either an option or much higher end models. Baseline for luxury?

NB. Kluger uses acoustic glass too.

      • haha i swear to god this is my first time i hear toyota and luxury in the same sentence.

        • We all learn something new everyday. No need to be shy to admit it.

Someone with zero clue doesn't mean that Toyota isn't making "luxury" vehicles.

Toyota used go have its own *luxury" vehicles under the Toyota brand. Lexus is an offshoot catered to the foreign market.

          • @Flutterby: I think there 2 people in the world who think Toyota is luxury 🤣 you and the other guy. Maybe it’s the same account trolling. Toyota is considered low to middle class car by many people at best

            • @michaelTito: You can continue to be ignorant as much as you want.

I have not claim that Toyota is a luxury brand, nor that it is not. It is an automobile manufacturer that make all sort of cars.

              • -1

@Flutterby: Toyota is not a luxury brand bro no matter how much you try to convince people. lol maybe your standard for luxury is very very low. People from 3rd world country might agree with you though that there toyota is luxury

    • +2

Whoah. MG was not a luxury car in the lifetime of pretty much anyone still alive today. More 'sports' in the scheme of things in BMC and not a premium car like a Riley (another brand in the BMC mainly of fine motors). Certainly nowhere near Aston Martin, Daimler, Jaguar and the like. In the 80's and 90's they were equivalent to Ford and Opel/Vauxhall - average cars but with the occasional flourish with the MGF and the ZT 260 and x-power models.

That said, they're even less than that nowadays….

      • I am certain it is more reliable of the old MG. The original MGB is common to experience leak to various degree and it is more concerning if it doesn't leak.

Despite the SAIC MGs might not be good cars, certain won't have such issues (probably worse off on some other parts). MG was never really a brand the crowned reliability by any stretch.

        • Oh hell yeah. If you could transport an MG3 back to 1970 it would be like turning up in a spaceship. In terms of reliability a current MG would probably be right up there if it was even the early 90's compared to some of the stuff which was around back then. But it still would have been very basic transport.

But getting back to the older stuff yes the MGB would leak fluids, rust, get water in the electrics if you were careless. They certainly required a higher level of involvement from the owner in keeping it going. But the enjoyment of driving would have been greater in that than a MG3.

          • @rodericb: Are we talking about enjoyment or merely reliability? My comment was respond to an earlier one noting the old MG as a "luxury" brand, which it is not - far from it.

I find my MX5 to be most more engaging, more so than the 2T Boxster that is driven as a alternate weekend car to the ND. But, lacking in many instances (sedated highway crusing like the GS350).

  • Wow they are trying to compete in ICE as well !!.. These Chinese manufacturers seem to have everyone else on the ropes when it comes to EV..but an ICE car from a new manufacturer (I know the brand is old but the manufacturer is new) is a hard sell purely on the value proposition since all of these brands are barely 4 years into our market if that and competing with brands which have been around forever.. I would not buy an offering for an ICE car from any new entrant no matter the country of origin ..but EVs are a different kettle of fish entirely true EVs not hybrids since every one is new or newish with Tesla being the oldest .. But these dudes sure are aggressive in their sales pitch and prices be it EVs or ICE vehicles..having said that ..I would not buy this car..Kia, Toyota, Suzuki, Hyundai,Mazda ..and not just for resale, simply because they are proven to run trouble free when it comes to ICE vehicles these have no track record

    • +2

when it comes to ICE vehicles these have no track record

MG was acquired by SAIC Motors in 2007, and has sold MG vehicles in Australia since 2013. With 70 years experience under SAIC and 12 years in Australia I would say it has a substantial track record. Now with a 10 year/250,000km manufacture warranty as standard in all their vehicles it further demonstrates their confidence in reliability. The new 2025 MG3 is better than ever and rates 7.8/10 on Car Expert

      • -2

So since 2013 MG branded ICE vehicles have been sold and are still around ?.. you may be right.. maybe I am the one making a mistake here..what ICE vehicles in Australia have been sold under the MG brand since 2013.. that would make it 10 years now

        • +1

MGs should be bought in some form of electrical powertrain. Pure ICE base models really isn't their forte

          • @Fuzor: "Pure ICE base models really isn't their forte"

This car uses a GM engine that is also found on a Buick or Chevrolet. Whilst being a GM engine might not induce confidence, but it's not an ICE that has been developed by MG with no track record.

        • maybe I am the one making a mistake here

          I’m afraid so…

          • @freeb1e4me: No need to be afraid .. which ICE model has been sold by MG since 2013 ?

            • @shaidas: Since 2013, MG Motor has sold several ICE (internal combustion engine) models, including the MG6, MG3, and MG GS. The MG6 was the primary model sold between 2013 and 2016, with the MG3 and MG GS joining the lineup in 2016

              • -7

@freeb1e4me: Arent you smart..google is available to everyone .. 10 years of warranty is a fallacy..every single ICE car introduced by MG has been a failure in terms of sales and it all started with the MG 6 and it was NOT introduced in 2013

                • +2

                  @shaidas:

Arent you smart..google is available to everyone

Well you asked so I kindly answered. Maybe you should google it yourself next time?

MG has been a failure in terms of sales

                  In 2024, MG's global sales reached 707,000 units. I wouldn’t call that a failure

                  • -8

@freeb1e4me: You can call whatever you want mate .. Do not distort the truth .. And thank you for kindly answering..next time do not .. MG is unreliable when it comes to ICE vehicles is the bottom line .. when it comes to EVs.. no one knows who is going to be reliable but the Chinese manufacturers are way ahead of everyone else is the plain reality

                • @shaidas: The MG6 was introduced here in 2013. It's just that nobody bought them.

        • what ICE vehicles in Australia have been sold under the MG brand since 2013.. that would make it 10 years now

That would make it more than 10 years.

it all started with the MG 6 and it was NOT introduced in 2013

Er what are you arguing about now?

          https://www.carsguide.com.au/car/14205834/mg/mg6/nsw/broadme…

In your first post you appeared to only just learn MG do ICE cars. Maybe look into it more before you just assert things you clearly don't know anything about.

      • SAIC has always been a "play fast and loose" kind of manufacturer, not like BYD which actually wants to be the next Toyota. The warranty is nice, but I wouldn't count on it especially as the vehicle ages. Fortunately for them it's not hard in 2025 to make a basic ICE car with some resemblance of reliability, but everything else not covered by warranty will fall apart.

The SAIC brands are mostly junk, and it will take years for them to improve their reputation.

        • SAIC has always been a "play fast and loose" kind of manufacturer

2024 MG Performance: SAIC's MG brand delivered 507,329 units, showcasing its significant contribution to SAIC's global sales

Not exactly this model, but just wanted to share my recent experience of driving a MG car:
I booked a Hyundai i30 for Easter, but the rental company gave me an MG5 instead. I’ve had my driver’s license for over 10 years and have driven many car brands and models. The MG5 was easily the worst car I’ve ever driven.

If you’re considering buying an MG, I strongly recommend test-driving it and comparing it to other brands. The MG5 feels like “industrial garbage” to drive—you’ll understand once you try it.

    • Not exactly this model

Right… well the one I test drove at my local MG dealer absolutely went flying. I have never felt so much power

      • -1

Which model was that ? ICE or an EV and when was that ?

      • +1

the pov pack NA 1.5L with CVT is a dog

the turbo models with AT or DCT are far more pleasant to drive

    • +1

Drove a rental MG5 a few months ago for 4 days. Was pretty nice drive actually. Good handling and suspension. Interior very nice. Not much in terms of driver assist features. The engine is pretty gutless but managable. Fuel efficiency pretty decent. Seems excellent value except the crash test results are apparently pretty bad.

      • Zero star ANCAP rating with dangerously low occupant protection.

      • Wash your mouth out.

People on here don't want to read actual 1st hand experience. They would rather rehash what they have heard or read on OzB.

I own an MG5, which I have found quite superior to drive than a few brand new Mazda MX-3s I have hired when travelling.

        • How can a hire car be brand new?

          • @oscargamer: When they have less than 1000km on the clock when you pick them up.

    • -1

Why its worst car? What are the reasoning? Is it because you didn't get i30? Lol

  • -3

    Absolute rubbish

    • +1

As a comment I completely agree.

      • Good point. I was being too kind

  • +2

I got the essence about 8 months ago. I don't drive much and it serves me fine. In fact my son drives it way more than me. Can't really fault it. It does what it says it does. Don't care at all about resale value as it will be my sons car for the foreseeable future. Don't care about long wait for parts because if that becomes an issue I have no problem in taking them to court for a refund under ACL.

  • +1

I’ve driven rental MG3s around Tasmania and the outback. They’re gutless but they get you from A to B. Just be aware that the fuel tank is microscopic: I made it from Cooper Pedy to Port Augusta on fumes.

  • +9

We have an MG3 Excite as a 2nd car. It's 4.5 years old. It's a piece of junk. Our Kmart hairdryer has more power.. No centre console, in fact no nothing.

The GPS system is like Parasite and Worker when you are used to watching Itchy and Scratchy. You feel every bump in the road and having the windows closed does not really stop outside noise pounding your ears

Fair enough nothing has really gone wrong with it but at this price its a con job. We paid $16999.and at the time it was cheaper than most 8 year old 2nd hand cars, that's why we got it.

You would have to have rocks in your head to pay this much for it 10 year warranty or no 10 year warranty it's an awful car to drive.

    • +4

I mean you got it dirt cheap during a period of crazy high car prices and have had 4.5 trouble free years so far? I'm going to be honest, that doesn't sound that bad?

Surely anyone who sees 1.5L ICE only (with no turbo I might add) would realise the power is going to be fairly woeful before even test driving it. It's a budget car, and a $17k you got it for it's an insanely budget car.

      • +2

I know all that, but at these prices it's a rip off.

        • It’s called inflation

          • +2

@freeb1e4me: I don't care what it's called, the car is not worth that money.

            • +1

@Halfpea: You've got it backwards, the MONEY is not worth as much due to high inflation. Common mistake.

              • @skysurfer: Forgot to mention it runs awfully on anything less than 95. Another added expense. They say you can use 91 but, that's a load of rubbish.
