Depends.
For note taking or annotating third party ones are really very good.
If you plan to draw, then the Apple ones come with pressure sensitivity that last I looked (and as per the linked one here), is missing from all the third party options.
Recently got a new iPad Air, and tried to buy a pencil off FB marketplace and couldn't get it to pair at sellers, eventually I realized there is pencil Gen 1, 2, Pro, and USB C… each with different combinations of compatibility to iPad versions 😵💫
In the end I bought a $15 one from Amazon to give it a try first. It does the job, and I never use it.
Buying a $175 pencil in a cost of living crisis is wild.
