Title slightly misleading - ‘free smartphone’ makes it sound like its free haha

  • +7

I recently purchased the Nord 4 for $650 from their official website, and I've been using it for just under a month now. To say I'm impressed would be a gross understatement. This phone offers incredible value for money, boasting features and performance that rival even more expensive models on the market.

However, there's one major caveat that potential buyers should be aware of: THIS PHONE IS LOCKED TO THE TELSTRA NETWORK IN AUSTRALIA.

    • However, there's one major caveat that potential buyers should be aware of: THIS PHONE IS LOCKED TO THE TELSTRA NETWORK IN AUSTRALIA.

You mean your one, or this one advertised on Amazon? The ad says nothing about Telstra.

      • +1

ALL Nord 4s are locked to the Telstra network…

        https://oneplusmobile.com.au/product/oneplus-nord-4/?srsltid…

        • +3

You mean your one from OnePlus Australia. OP's model is from UK which is unlikely to lock to Telstra network.

          • +3

@davidl820: Check out another one for sale on Amazon…

            https://tinyurl.com/2kaj2w39

            Look at the first review.

"5.0 out of 5 stars AUSTRALIA LOCK FOR TELSTRA

It is a great phone, awesome hardware for the right price.
But if you are in Australia, this phone is locked to work only with Telstra network but it is not advertise."

By no means am I saying it's a bad deal. It's a great deal! Just be careful!

            • -2

@nickw1984syd: Just root it and install custom rom.

            • @nickw1984syd: The review saying it only worked with Telstra network might be based on some reading. It did not mention if the reviewing user tested on Optus or Vodafone. There are users in the posts here that mentioned that it worked on Optus and Voda. It is better to check more if it is the case. There is a post showing a conversation with Oneplus - that might be with Oneplus.com.au. Someone suggested it is not real reapresentation of Oneplus global. It is still no conclusive. About whitelisting or blacklistng - I think only blacklisting is applied. Whitelisting is not practical as it means that new models will not work when new IMEI sequence is used.

        • +2

Not locked, just not compatible with the others since it is imported EU/SEA stock. Would work in other countries for example.

    • The link in the OP clearly says

      Wireless Provider Unlocked

I also highly doubt a phone sold by the maker is locked to a specific provider? Unless stated, it’s always unlocked.

    • good to know re: network blocks… but maybe this related model – with expandable memory via micro SD card – is better although more expensive? BigW says "we have confirmed that they will work on all Australian/New Zealand networks" …

    • How's the camera quality on this one?

      • +1

Really good for a $450 phone!

    • Can you take it internationally. -eg. locked to telstra in australia but…works in Indo?

      • +1

Not locked to Telstra, just blocked on the others. Would work overseas.

    • +1

It's not locked I have the same thing. Without a boot it works on Kogan, vodaphone, Optus.
I bought this exact phone from Amazon (I think international model)

      • What do you mean without a boot? Autocorrect from doubt?

  • +9

Maybe with the 3G shutdown it is blocked by Optus and Vodafone.
So he means blocked not locked

    • +8

Thats correct. Its more of an Optus and Vodafone blacklist thing rather then phone being locked.

      • Why would this be blocked by voda/optus? Don't all recent phones support the required 4g bands?

        • +9

All the operators started a whitelisting process per which they add every phone to that whitelist and only then it works. Even some of the Xiaomi and Redmi phones which users bought locally from JBHifi etc were also blocked and sitting in drawers since they started this pathetic thing.

        • +3

Surely all this blacklisting of phones under the guise of the 3G shutdown must make it hard for tourists to use their phones here?

  • -4

    453AU or US?

  • +7

Buy a OnePlus "global" model again? Not me, I learn from my mistakes.

Mine is sitting on my bedside table functioning as a very expensive very high spec bedside clock.

    • +1

Do you get you butler to wipe dust of it?
      /s

technically can do few more things from just a wifi but I feel your pain… have couple of perfectly fine phones that were disabled.

    • What's the issue with it?

      • Most likely blocked by telcos, usually will work on vodafone though

  • Seeing mixed comments above. Anyone able to confirm if this is unlocked in Aus?

    • +1

It is an unlocked phone. Its just that its included in Optus and Vodafone blacklist, hence, won't work if you are planning to use it on Optus or Vodafone network

      • +2

Would it work with a telstra network providor that isn't telstra - like Aldi? I think they use Telstra network.

        • Yes, it will work fine on any provider that uses Telstra network.

    • +18

I just spoke to a OnePlus Rep and this is the transcript:

Me: Would this Nord 4 that is listed on Amazon work any network in Australia or is it locked to Telstra? https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0D8LJ2MZM

Rep: Nord 4 won't work with Optus or Vodafone networks.

Me: What about the one listed in this Amazon post, it says unlocked?

Rep: It hasn't been whitelisted by those 2 networks. You can double check with the seller, but we are quite sure of that.

      Me: Ok

      • I see, so using Kogan or Dodo wont work with this phone as they run on Optus/Vodafone networks?

        • +3

          correct - they won't work

  • I assume this doesn't come with a super fast charger? Just the USB-C cable?

  • +1

Is it legal to block a brand of phone?
Is it sponsored by Apple & Samsung?

    • +10

Anything is possible in Australia if you have got connections :-/, which I am sure Apple and Samsung have.

    • Reading some of the comments, sounds like the phone is not blocked by Vodafone and Optus in the usual sense. Just that it hasn't been whitelisted by them since the 3G shutdown.

      • +5

Agreed. Not whitelisted means blocked until they add it to the so-called Whitelist, so won't work until then.

    • Yes. No.

Unfortunately it is just the risk you take when you buy a gray market phone now.

  • +6

Just to clarify for anyone that's interested, the "OnePlus Authorised Store" (oneplusmobile.com.au) is not actually OnePlus or approved by OnePlus, they're a Singaporean reseller that I have bought a OnePlus 13 from without issue and overall are fine. But it's important to keep in mind that they are not official or authorized, they also will only give at most an 80% refund for any reason, so that warranty isn't as rock solid as it looks.

    • -1

So they're lying, misrepresenting who they are, and I'm supposed to be okay giving them money and patronage?

      • +1

Nope! you don't have to be okay with anything, I was very sketched out by this too when I found out, but they are unfortunately one of the safest ways that I have found to get a oneplus phone in australia so it is what it is. For what it's worth they ship fast and have good chat support, but yes they are deceptive

        • Authorised or not, thats another discussion. But they are very reliable. I have been buying from them for the last 3-4 years. Bought 4 oneplus phones from them. Had to do a warranty claim once (I think it was for Oneplus 11) and they were pretty helpful and swift to ship a replacement under warranty. Of course we all know Oneplus phones are not officially sold in Australia, so they definitely are not Oneplus Authorised Store. But their "About Us" page does correctly mention that they are a Singapore based reseller.
Currently using Oneplus 13r which I bought from them a couple of months back. It also was listed as Telstra only, but tested it and it works fine on Optus and Vodafone networks too. But you never know when it gets included in the Blacklist :-/

    • +1

I bought a OnePlus 13 from them, chat/comms was great, delivery was very fast - no issues.
Phone is AMAZING - but I would say that, it's my 4th OnePlus over the past 10+ years.

Yes, misrepresenting, but that could be said for a lot of marketing on… almost everything, not just grey import phones.

And yes, the blacklisting (or lack of whitelisting?) is mind blowing, jaw dropping to everyone that hears/processes/digests it.

  • +5

Also no eSim which is pretty uncommon for mid-tier 2024 phones.
Combined with the Aus carrier issues, puts it on the no list for me.

    • OnePlus is a Chinese brand, and the mainland market doesn’t support eSIM yet. I believe they only sell the Ace series in China, which also lacks eSIM.

  • +9

Can I suggest that the description be updated to specify Telstra only. Not due to the phone being locked but due to DRACONIAN CARRIERS in Aus :(

    • +1

It’s shocking and disgusting to learn how Optus and Vodafone behave…… like nzcoops said above, it’s absolutely mind blowing and jaw dropping……

  • Are the frequencies that it supports not compatible with Optus and Voda?

    • +3

it's not the freq. … it's not the phones capabilities…. it's just our AU Telcos blocking/not-whitelisting them (because they can/no one stopping them).

      https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/News/Traveller-ph….

The article speaks about 'tourist phones' but extends to basically anything that is not whitelisted to be used on their networks in AU.

This phone, like many others are not locked to any specific network (i.e. if you took this phone, but an overseas sim card in it - it'll work there, just not here in AU unless the telcos have it on the whitellist).

      Hope that helps..

      • +1

Its not that the AU Telcos arbitrarily blocking phones, its the government forcing them to block phones that cant make emergency (000) 4G VoLTE calls on their network. Its got something to do with the 4G VoLTE implementation not being same among the AU Telcos.

        https://www.acma.gov.au/ensuring-mobiles-can-reach-000-after…

  • +3

I can't understand how they can justify effectively blocking hundreds and thousands of grey imported but otherwise perfectly working phones (including my beloved OPPO phone)

    • Because of DRACONIAN CARRIERS as someone wrote above.

  • That's a very attractive price. I was very impressed with my last OnePlus and would still be using it if not for it being blacklisted.

What Aus phone would you recommend for a similar cost if I don't go for this one?

    • +1

You're basically stuck with Motorolas, for value and price. I had to buy one. Could've got something way better from aliexpress, but had no choice. Mine is the 75g. Paid around $350 for it. The most I ever paid for a phone. Very happy with it, especially the speaker and has sd card support. eSim as well, which I don't care too much about. If you're travelling, locally bought sims are at least tripple better value than those online eSims. You just need to wait a few hours to get online, for some that's too long. Camera is pretty good as well. My phones usually last me between 2 or 3 years. So no point spending over a thousand that will last a little longer. None of those people that spend over a thousand keep their phone for more than two years. Few do, but rare. You can only justify it if the camera is the most important part of the phone. In every other apect, they are usually inferior. For example for me, the sd card slot is 10 times more important than the camera. Hardly any of the high end phones have an sd card anymore. Phones for kids/trendies/people who waste their money on pointless stuff instead of buying a house, etc.

      • Yeah it seems to be either a Motorola or the cheaper Samsung's at this price point. Esim, SD card or camera aren't important to me and spending 2G on a phone is out of my league.

  • I still use OnePlus Nord CE3 Lite 5G and I can use all networks in Australia. Previously I bought it from a seller in Melbourne through Kogan. Until now no problem.

So, I am not sure if OnePlus Nord 4 is blocked by Vodafone & Optus as it is newer than my phone.

    • It it only whitelisted by Telstra so not approved for Optus or Vodafone networks.

  • Nord 5 will be released this year for anyone who cares. Discussions on forums are varied, but they highlight how good the Nord 4 is. I think Nord CE variants are different to Nord 2/3/4/5 etc variants but correct me if I'm wrong.

I need a new phone but not urgently and the rapidly expired Pixel deal hurts to miss out, but it sounds like this Nord 4 would be a good alternative for a mid-tier phone only if you're willing to be stuck on Telstra etc.

To the person above who mentioned Motorola as an alternative, is OnePlus better with their OS and security updates?

    • Flagship Samsung and Pixel phones have several years of software upgrades while OnePlus has less than that. For Motorola, only certain phones have longer software upgrades.

I think maybe I'll buy Pixel 10 in few months during preorder should be cheaper through JB-HiFi plan and cancel the plan in the same day ;-)

      • Oneplus also has "several years" of software updates. I don't really understand the importance of updates as the software works fine out of the box I've had updates before that I wish could be undone. My last phone was used for many years without updates after support ended.

        • What I mean for software upgrades is like from android 13 to android 14, then 15, 16, and so on. Software updates that you think is include security updates even if the OS is stuck with android 14 for example.

Several years is like 7 or 8 years like Samsung and Pixel phones.

        • What updates on what phone did you wish could be undone?

Yes, the software works fine out of the box but I was referring to OS and security updates as stated above. What I meant by OS is the operating system, so Android. Newer Android versions are for the most part better than older versions for a variety of reasons that are widely reported on the internet so I won't repeat them here. And what I meant by security updates are patches that specifically address security issues, which I think is pretty important not just for Android phones but other things too like Windows, Mac, Linux devices.

Yes, you can take the risk of refusing updates or using an old phone that no longer receives updates, but depending on your use case this can range from being a mildly bad idea to a terrible idea if you use and store a lot of personal stuff on your phone like banking, crypto and identification.
