    Breville Bambino Plus BES500

Your link shows a slow cooker.

    • +2

That's just the auto-generated image from the RACV website, which is where the code is generated. I'm don't think I can adjust..

      • -4

        It has miraculously being fixed.

        "Hallelujah"…

        • Hm, I uploaded the image, but now it doesn't link to the RACV website…not sure which is better formatting.

  • +12

Great compact machine, has some quirks but none that would stop me recommending or gifting it.

Recommend pulling the plastic out of the portafilter for a bit more flow (and less plastic in your life), and if you get a puck screen it basically doubles the time between the uninterruptible cleaning cycle

    • +2

Can you recommend any Puck Screen?

      • +1

I've got a MHW3 Bomber that I got with their constant pressure tamper from ali-express that has worked well

      • I got a normcore one from amazon

    • +6

I thought the cleaning cycle was calculated by a certain amount of cups made? Or is there a sensor that can tell when theres too much coffee grinds stuck up inside?

      • Its the former, and seems to be per activation of the shot buttons, so the puck screen saves you having to pull water through to clean the head after your shot.

(Deleted my other comment as it wasn't super clear)

        • +1

I've always done an empty shot of hot water to start up the machine and get it warmed up. Read somewhere it provides more stable temperature for your shot. No idea if it actually improves the process.

Probably doesn't hurt doing the clean more frequently anyway. It's still only like every 3-4 weeks, having 2-3 coffees a day.

    • +4

      Interesting about the puck screen.
I picked up a bottomless portafilter and haven't looked back, so much more fun than the dinky supplied one

      Great little machine!

      • Yeah, that is probably the better solution but I went the cheap route :)

      • +1

Any recommendations for a bottomless portafilter and basket? Looking to do the same upgrade

        • Normcore. The included basket is actually very decent too - I much prefer it over the Breville basket for shot consistency & taste.

    • +1

      uninterruptible cleaning cycle

This happens on mine too, but I'm pretty sure this was a bug in the software that only effected some earlier units. If you look around on forums and different Youtube videos, you'll see plenty of people saying that they're able to bypass the cleaning cycle. You would hope Breville have fixed that issue now (but who knows).

      • Oh, so there is current posts/comments saying that?
When I've looked its always been historic posts saying they could bypass, nothing current

        • Honestly, I have no idea. I was just giving Breville the benefit of the doubt that they had fixed what I assumed was a fairly simple software bug. But it may very well still be like that, which would be very poor form.

        • +1

This was my understanding too. I had a conversation with someone that had the issue with a newer machine than mine. Mine allows you to temporarily bypass the cleaning cycles.

          • @damfrog: I had it happen for the first time yesterday and I don’t know how to bypass

      • +1

If you turn the machine off and on, it disables it for one use and then cleaning notification comes back on.

    • +4

Youre supposed to pull an empty shot when you want to brew anyway

      • that's what I do!

Brings the Dual Boiler down to $959.
Pretty decent deal compared to the most recent deals
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/904624

Even the Smart Oven™ Pizzaiolo for $679.00 is fairly good.

    • +4

Dual boiler is a no-brainer at sub-1k if that is within budget. Won't get anything else with that feature set in Australia for much less than 2500.

  • Great little machine - good for people who want decent coffee with Nespresso level ease. Literally no more complicated than pressing two buttons (once you dial in your beans of course).

    • Any recommendations for on dial in the beans?

      • Not really. Too many variables - every grinder and every roast will be different. You'll just need to experiment with your setup to find what works best. See if you can find some Youtube guides for your grinder and for this machine to get you started…

      • The manual for this machine, explains the process very well.

      • +2

Get a good grinder, scale, self leveling tampand vacuum container.

A grinder that isnt consistent is going to cause more headaches then nearly everything else. Baratza encore esp is probably one of the best "cheap" options that are consistent.

Scale is important because weight off beans in to coffee out is usually the way you figure out dialling.

The self leveling tamp is to basically make life easier and get the tamping done with minimal learning curve.

The vacuum container just needs to be able to suck out air so that you can have more consistent cups between first beans from the bag and last.

Neither of the last two are needed but make dialling in at the start way easier. The grinder I think is non negotiable because I have a Breville touch and the grinder is so inconsistent that it drives me up the wall. Some coffees come out great, others a mess.

Want something like this but with Nespresso capsules instead

    • You mean like this?

      • -2

Yeah but for a quarter of the price?

  • Wanted this machine for ageees! Please if anyone has a code that would be much appropriated

  • -1

+1 for anyone that has a code to share, would be much appreciated!

  • +4

Had mine for over 5 years now, 2 coffees a day and still going strong, hardly a mark on the outside (few small dents near where you insert the porta filter. Pair it with a decent grinder and fresh coffee and you can have a great time. I particularly like the auto milk frother as I can prep my coffee while it does the milk thing.

Cleaning cycles come up a bit too frequently (I pull blank shots in the morning so that adds to the 200 total), but it has maintained the machine really well so I can't really complaint. If it broke down I may look at a dual boiler but it would be hard ask to spend double on it.

Code BREVFUTURE10 for those without RACV and want an extra 10% off.

  • +1

I highly recommend getting the best grinder you can afford, a scale, a decent tamp, a coffee grind distributor, and a portafilter.

The default settings offer a good 1:2 extraction. After faffing around I went back to factory reset and realised most of my problems were related to uneven and unlevel tamping.

FWIW, I have the Breville smart grinder pro and grind fresh dark roast at the finest setting. Also helps to pull a few blank shots and heat up the portafilter before pulling a (double) shot.

  • What is a decent grinder to go with this? Would you say it's well worth upgrade from barista express for a low volume use? (i.e. 1-2 espresso or cappucinos per day)

    • +1

This is not an upgrade over the Barista Express UNLESS you are going to buy a good grinder ($500+) to go with it. Eureka, Niche Zero, DF64 etc

      • thanks. hodl it is then

    • My Timemore 064S is a brilliant companion to this machine - as well as amazing coffee, it looks right at home next to it.

But if your budget is limited and you don't mind a teeny bit of additional exercise every day, a KINGrinder K6 will get you comparable results in your cup to expensive electric grinders - for a fraction of the price.

  • +1

Thanks OP - finally pulled the trigger on this machine with the discount applied.

I went with the Baratza Encore ESP grinder, looking forward to this!

  • +2

Great compact machine i got precovid. Ive got this paired with breville smart grinder pro. Two cups a day. Double shots. Blank shots as well. Still going strong. Maintaining it and cleaning it regular will keep its longevity. Cleaners are cheap in bulk from amazon.
Best to purchase freshly roasted beans and dial in the grind size. Your cuppa will be just as good as your fancy local cafe at a fractional cost.
    ✌️

  • +1

When I bought a machine last sale, I put through the offer to get free coffee again, and they sent me another 2 packets. YMMV.

    Fairly mediocre coffee tho

  • Thank you OP,
perfect timing as I have been waiting to get this little baby.
Now off to hunt for the decent grinder.

  • +1

We’ve had this machine since 2018. It’s a wonderful machine and it’s as good as the day we bought it.

  • Why mod removed "(RACV Membership Required)" from title? Is RACV membership no longer required?

Or membership deals should now be enclosed in brackets?

    • [Amazon Prime]
    • [Costco]
    • [OnePass]
  • Makes superior coffee to most of the barista-challenged cafes I have to endure.

    Heats up very quickly.

Using with a smart grinder pro.

    Recommended :-)
