I've been using these units (1 base 3 satelites) for more than 4 years and they have been extremely stable. Probably had to restart it once in that time. Great coverage and very fast. With the focus on Wifi 7 etc , these units are now become obsolete but if you want a reliable and stable system then you can't do much worse than these.

    super old model yeah? WiFi 6 < 6E < 7

    • Netgear Orbi RBK863S was released in late 2022 in the US and early 2023 in AU.

    • Yeah, this is what I was thinking. Tempting with the discount, but not even WiFi 6E, at a time when WiFi 7 is quickly becoming mainstream…
I reckon I’ll pass on it.

  • Beyond the 10Gbe port that's on the main unit (and afaik there is only gigabit for home connections?), how is this superior to the BE11000 from Bing Lee? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/155963331482

That one is wifi7, the units otherwise have 4 2.5Gbe ports…

    • My exact thoughts, I was even comparing to last gen Xe75 pro

    • Specs wise, TP-Link DECO-BE65-3PK is better in most areas. 10Gbps WAN port on the Netgear Orbi kit isn't useful here (our max NBN speed after upcoming NBN upgrade is only going to be up to 2000Mbps). LAN ports of 1Gbps isn't ideal (but actually okay if you only have 2x2 WiFi devices).

While this Netgear has a 5GHz band dedicated to backhaul (the mesh kit actually supports tri-bands but one band is reserved for mesh units), the setup appears to be 4x4 80MHz for fronthaul and the same for the backhaul. So, for most clients (being 2x2), you need to half that, so 1200Mbps max on 5GHz (for 2x2 clients).

TP-Link DECO BE65, however, has a different issue. The backhaul needs to share / use one of the bands, either 5GHz band or the 6GHz band would be halved. Furthermore, you need to decide whether you want to run 5GHz in 160MHz mode (or 80MHz mode for better compatibility) and if you were to choose the latter, the speed is halved once again (so if the backhaul is also on 5GHz, that means 1/2 * 1/2). 6GHz 320MHz mode sounds great in theory, but the range is short. WiFi 7 MLO is at best in beta phase right now (I'm not sure I would like my mesh kit to do MLO between 6GHz and 5GHz for backhaul).

Also, as indicated in the specs page provided by TP-Link:

The 240MHz bandwidth may be unavailable in the 5G band in Australia due to regulatory restrictions

That restriction nullifies one of the advantages of WiFi 7 in 5GHz band. There is nothing we can do about it here (unless those channels become free later on).

Assuming you don't have your house wired up (so you won't be connecting these mesh units via wire), you need to look past the marketing fluff specs. TP-Link DECO BE65 specs wise is better. However, the 2.5Gbps WAN + LAN ports means you can't get the max speed out of WiFi 7 6GHz band (it will be okay for 2000Mbps NBN (if your WiFi device is close enough to a mesh unit), and that's most likely good enough for most people).

      • Ah right, yeah I'm running my nodes on ethernet backhaul as I did fork out a little bit of money to get that done, so fortunately I don't have that downside.

For anyone else also in the market for this, OW has it for $877 https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/tp-link-de…

It's unclear whether this is v1 or v2 (surely no more v1s being sold in Australia)… ?

EDIT: Checked the one I got from JB, mine is v2.

        • If you have ethernet backhaul, what's the main reason to go with a mesh kit instead of router & access points combination?

Any good 3-pack mesh system around $300 gang? I am looking at TP link deco x55 atm but it is not on sale :(

    • also keen to know

  • I'm not really sure if it is a good deal compared to something like Deco XE75 pro (currently $749 on Amazon, but it goes as low as $600).

    • i had Deco XE75 pro but it played up vpn. so sold it off.

      • Ohh you configured vpn in the router, I never had an issue with using VPN but never configured VPN in the router

This brand is really good. I bought a similar model 20 years ago and it still is working. Even Netflix and high power streaming works in HD.

Correct me if I’m mistaken, but neither Orbi nor mesh networks in general didn’t really exist 20 years ago?

Unless you mean you just mean Netgear modem/router?

      • You forgot the time machine on mesh networks?

      • My router is Netgear brand. It lets me share the internet.

    • Great Scott Marty!!!, what did I say about playing with the Time Space Continuum

Taking back that type of hardware to 2005 could create a temporal event
