  • Get this or two ASUS RT-AX3000P V2 Dual Band WiFi 6 (802.11ax) for $109 each? Won't be wired mesh.

    • Save yourself 25 bucks and swap 1 for the RT-AX57 Go. Or put that towards a better main node (AX4200 routers).

EDIT: forgot to address your question. I could never understand going for ZenWifi routers when AiMesh is available for most Asus routers (including ZenWifi routers). Sure, canned mesh gives some ease of setup, presumably better roaming but definitely not the flexibility (ports, reusability, etc.). Usually, the hardware in canned mesh is either gimped for main node (security, routing, switching), or a waste in satellite nodes (AP).

Same price as this deal from 3 weeks to a fortnight ago. Why did you choose to compare it with a price from Dec 24?

  • I haven't owned this particular system, but my 2-pack of the XD6 proved very unreliable. I had to restart it more than once a week, because devices, while remaining connected, would lose network connectivity (both internal and to the internet). My Google cameras would stop uploading videos after a few days (though I could still view them live), my laptop would suddenly be unable to talk to the NAS, and smart devices would just go offline. The house is small and most devices had very strong signals. All these issues went away when I changed to a TP Link Deco systems, so I know for sure it was the Asus mesh that was to blame.

    • That's quite interesting, I have the same two pack and they have been rock solid. Was your second point on Ethernet backhaul (mine is), or fully wireless?

      • Wireless, with a direct line of sight across maybe 10 metres. Speed tests on WiFi were great, pretty much anywhere in or around the house. Definitely not an issue of reception or stability of the radio signal. It was purely a matter of devices basically dropping off the network (but not off the WiFi signal). I could see that my cameras had a strong enough signal, and I could view them fine anytime. But they would just stop uploading videos after a few days, as if they'd basically given up or backed off. As soon as I'd restart the Asus mesh, all the videos would start getting uploaded again. Sometimes a mobile phone or mac would just stop getting internet connectivity - things simply wouldn't load, as if blocked.

I returned it under warranty (just under two years). Technically they shouldn't accept that, and someone got in trouble for it I think, but I told them it wouldn't be reasonable for me to be without WiFi for weeks/months while they send it back to Asus (chances are they'd struggle to reproduce it). I read somewhere that the XD6 can only handle like 50 devices or something (I had <35).

  • Solid Mesh router if you need good coverage. Can't say the same for speed.

better to mesh 2x AX3000 routers?

      • No chance. I wasn't getting even half my maximum theoretical speed past the main router on Gigabit.

Is it true 3xcamel is affiliated with Amazon?

  • Is this set of mesh routers able to handle VLAN with the ability to create rules for inter VLAN communications for specific ports and IP's?

    • Not with the XD4S. Pair two or more of any of these routers for mesh Wi-Fi and VLAN. Asus router VLAN guide.

  • Wish they came in white. Wife will not be happy if it doesn't match furniture

    • ASUS XD4S comes in white however I can't find any local sellers.

JB Hi-Fi has the white ASUS ZenWiFi BT10 BE18000 Wi-Fi 7 Mesh Router 2-Pack for the bargain price of $1499 + delivery. No idea when the cheaper Asus ZenWiFi BT8 and BD4 are coming to Oz.

eero, Netgear Orbi, TP-Link Deco, Google Nest Wi-Fi Pro and Ubiquiti all have white mesh setups.

  • Sorry noob question but can this be plugged directly into the nbn box? I recently got nbn and just plugged my old tp-link ADSL modem in and it worked but it seems to be failing or glitching recently.

    • +1

Sure can, just connect one of the 3 to your nbn box and the other two in other parts of the house and they'll all work together as a mesh for whole house WiFi coverage

      • Hi just to clarify, do you only need to plug one in to the nbn box? The other two only need to connect to a power source and will pick up the signal from the main one? Thanks

        • +1

          Yes and yes

  • I bought this for the same price a few months ago. Can recommend it works great and I just used the auto setup feature and wifi mesh (not wired backhaul). Good coverage around the whole house now.
