  • Data is just starting to come in: basically matches the S90D for brightness but without the colour volume this only shows up for scenes with plenty of white involved.

    No point paying extra really.

    • S90D panel is better but LG is a better tv maker imo. If LG display made qd oled I would definitely buy their ones. Still get the s90d

      • LG also has Dolby Vision

        • And yet every service is progressing to adopting to HDR10+ as they improve their encoding hardware and move towards AV1 (and after).

Even if all you get is HDR10 static metadata, the automatic tonemapping has gotten a lot better over the years. It's not been a deal breaker for a while, and it diminishes with each generation (AI is a huge help here, and may eventually lead to downloadable dynamic metadata to patch the content).

          • @jasswolf: Netflix adoption was a big win but it still isn't represented by smaller streaming services and physical Media especially with older titles. Also Dolby vision has more advanced settings and options which if used correctly can be better than hdr10+. The worst part of it was content availability and Samsung and LG fighting over it.

            • @HaydosK: Netflix and Disney+ are newly announced, while Prime and Apple TV+ have been offering it for years now. Youtube have dabbled in it a few times, but are currently back at HDR10 again (probably saves them on file size for no visual quality loss on 99% of HDR uploads).

As I stated earlier, when a service is moving over to AV1, chances are they're bringing in HDR10+ support as part of the hardware upgrade now.

      • Smoother UI at times maybe, but everything is mostly executed the same. Little bit of an upscaling advantage for LG as of maybe 2 years ago, but LG is worse with near-black.

If you're looking for a clear processing advantage, you'd buy the Sony, but you're also paying about $1000 more.

        • I mean it comes out of the box calibrated better if I remember correctly and yes I definitely think it's upscaling and other processing is better on LG tvs. Unfortunately yeah the near black and other things LG use are just because of the panel.

Samsung also uses a anti glare coating that while I haven't seen it irl is apparently so bad people are removing it from their tv. https://youtu.be/3Azn4gnXxCE

Oh as much as I love Sony I don't think I could ever pay 3k for a sony qd oled but it's my dream tv rn. They also have issues like limited HDMI 2.1 ports and slow Ethernet just like the cheaper competitors. For the price I wish they put a bit more into the hardware.

          • @HaydosK: The S95D and S95F have had attempts at a matte anti-glare coating for use in bright conditions. It does the job very well for that purpose, but I'm not sure why it's the only choice with their top of the line panel. Out of the box calibration is excellent for Samsung AFAIK, but most of the testing is about pre-calibrated accuracy with a few basic settings changes, and both are great when you do so.

The S90D and S90F use a different finish altogether. Can't speak to the S80/S85 series, but fairly sure that's 100% LG WOLED at that point and more equivalent to the LG B series.

Limited HDMI 2.1 often means nothing if the TVs max out at 4K 120Hz, though I accept it's slightly more of a struggle if the goal is uncompressed 144Hz signal (but I challenge anyone to spot the impact of DSC in that case).

In terms of processing, I think the only clear advantage LG has is in smoothing of low bitrate & resolution content, but it comes at the expense of near-black performance and colour banding in high res content when compared with the Samsung. Oh and the persistent choice of solely using MaxMDL over integrating MaxCLL for tonemapping support with Samsung.

  • +1

Lol barely anyone would pay 3k for a 65-incher nowadays

    • +1

Yeah buying current model TVs is clearly a mug’s game

      • Been waiting for a good deal for so long on the C4s looks like they sold out, I'll have to wait for a deal on the C5 now, gonna be a while I guess

  • Bought a LG G2 65in for the same price couple of years ago. Permanent black line down it and turns off constantly. Wouldn't touch another high end LG TV again. Terrible customer support. Still trying to get the refund/replacement today.
