So I was going to purchase the GOpro Hero 3 Black and then when Kogan posted the incorrect price.
Then I started looking into Sony Action Cam, which is a similar device and the battery life is much better.
The Sony has a remote control function through the mobile app.

I have it on charge now looking forward to giving it a go.
I will be buying this once the ski season comes along

  • whats the battery life like on these?

and it doesnt come with any mounts?

    • SONY HDR-AS15K has 2 batteries and i would say 2 hours each, also it comes with mounts and adaptors.

  • I think I'll hold out for the Go Pro - whilst it seems there is some probs with some of them - most reviews put it ahead of the pack in terms of performance

gopro 3 also have loads of problems.

      • Yeah i've seen the reviews - I've also got friends who've got them and had no problems.

    • search youtube for techmoan sony action cam vs go pro

clearly shows the sony as the winner in terms of image quality, video stabilisation, light exposure, awesome low light capabilities, 120fps slow motion mode

only downside is, go pro's accesories and physical shape and design and mounting abilities supercede it, which is important for an action cam

i ride a motorcycle and theres no way to properly mount it to your helmet
      other helmets are fine though

Some SONY Action Cam footage editted into this Sprint Car race from Sydney Speedway last week.

    Image stability looks good.

Thanks for posting that! Max Dumesny is my hero :D

  • I was really keen on this but if I remember correctly there is no audio on 60 and 120fps and the still images are limited to only 2mp. So I lost a bit of interest because of that.

    • Correct, only in 720p mode
      'Full HD 1080 (30p), HD 720 (60p Slow-Motion, 120p super Slow-Motion)'

      • I think you may have misread my comment. I was stating that a review I watched said there was no audio at 60 and 120fps, only at 30fps.

From the headband mount kit link I assume you are planning to have this hanging off the side of your helmet. I tried this in ski seasons past with my old camera but I could never guarantee where the camera was pointing. I had the occasional run where I had awesome footage of the sky or my ski tips/boots. I went instead for the Liquid Image goggles with integrated camera. I always know what I am filming now as the camera is mounted between my eyes. Only problem now is remembering there is a camera on, esp when checking out the talent whilst waiting in lift queues!!!

Anyhoo, LI Camera goggles are charged and ready to go for deep POW in Niseko in about a month's time!!

    • my dad and little bro have these….they recently came back from the US decent footage however Dad said he couldnt remember if he had the camera going on the goggles when he went to releave himself in the mens room…..ahahah guess they will find it in the footage ahaha

  • I was reading the Whirlpool thread about this and this looks like a price increase. It was actually $318.40 (DSE) about 2 weeks ago.

Bought mine for $245.00 inc 2 batteries etc etc. bloody awesome except getting condensation in the waterproof case after 15 mins. Which is really annoying and i am mountain biking hmmm

    • A tiny bit of desiccant in the enclosure may fix that.

      • where do i buy that easily?

    • Where from for that price?? In Aus?

      • +1

Sony holiday sales, you can pick them up on ebay upwards from $245 from time to time. For the fullkit, yes Australia

        • link?

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqQYk-Vuf_I Compared to Go Pro silver edition. Go Pro looks better underwater here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0zoxpWmNrY Hero 2 vs Hero 3 vs Sony

I'm still undecided what to get.. Want Hero 3 Black…

    • The ultimate factor for me was profile and image stabilisation. The sony is quite slim as oppose to the width of the go pro and therefore more mounting options.
