Thanks, bought one. Couldn’t make AUMY16 work, so used AUMY10. Got I hate Aliexpress’s UX so much.

    • Same, could only use AUMY10.
Luckily my order was tracked with TopCashback for the $30.

100%. Feels like a spiders web of bait prices, coupons, incentives, trickery and snares all designed to get you to click and buy more.

  • Is anyone's cashback links to AliExpress not working? I can't seem to use Topcashback, Shopback, or Cashrewards

    • Shopback has always been rock solid for me. Track messages usually within the hour.

      • I mean when I click the link to go to AliExpress, the link is broken. Other links to other stores are fine. Just AliExpress is broken

  • I'm getting told the AUMY16 code is exhausted, used by other shoppers.

  • What do people think about the HW kits in general, like, does the cameras drain the battery very quickly? If you have to leave your car at, say, the airport for a month, will your car start when you return?

    • +2

They have a voltage cutoff on the hardware kit, whereby if it sees your battery level is below a certain voltage level the camera will turn off. That threshold is configurable via a switch on the kit. So no, it shouldn't drain your battery if set correctly.

      • If you're parking your car for a month though you'd want to set that threshold high especially if your battery isn't new. You're probably only going to get a couple of days in parking mode?

        • +1

Correct. The general use-case with this is to cover you while in a shopping park, or parked overnight on the street. My parking mode on my camera only uses 2W and is a 1FPS timelapse.

You can also tell the parking mode to record for the first 4hours and then turn off overnight. It's quite configurable.

    • Have two cars with them (one the 329 dashcam) both will drain them till dry over about 2 weeks. They shoudlnt, i have them set conseratively on voltage so it may just be the hardwire kits themselves

Personally if your budget stretches, Thinkwares are better than Viofo.

    • Explain how?

      • Sorry, should have expanded more. Much better image clarity, a more streamlined shape, better performance at night and they have radar inside for parking detection.

By no means are the Viofo's bad, but I wish I got a Thinkware in hindsight. Currently using an A229 Pro.

        • +1

Those are good reasons. How much more expensive is the Thinkware though? I've been using the A229 Plus and I've been very happy with it.

        • Thank you!

    • Lmao in what way. That and Blackvue are just same Starvis 2 but way way more.

  • I am looking at a dash cam. Any reviews/thoughts on this one?

    • Sony Starvis 2 sensor, very good image quality and good night vision.
I have installed 3x sets of Viofo cameras on the family's cars and none have died or had faults. Oldest one is 5 years old now, just bought an updated one with the Starvis 2 sensor for better recording quality. Will also hardwire this one.

      • Any experience of the mobile app ? Hearing mixed things about the app, but old reviews.

        • Never used it. I have the Bluetooth 'save/capture' button next to my shifter and if I see something I want to save, I just press it, no fumbling while driving for the save button on the camera itself.
Then from time to time, I pull out the memory card and take the footage I want to save off of it.

      • How difficult is it to hardwire the front and rear? Do you need to be a sparky?

        • You hardwire the front only. The rear connects to the front with a long cable. You don’t need to be a sparky, you do need to be confident lifting and replacing trim in your car and finding your fuse box.

        • Easiest way is to buy fuse taps. Can get easily a full range or the size that suits your vehicle on AliExpress.
To do a clean job of wiring in the rear camera, you're going to want to pop trim and run the cable inside the roof liner or behind the side trim but being careful not to pinch the cable when you push the trim back into their locking points.

        • The rear can be tricky if the tailgate opens, like hatchback, SUV, or VAN.

Professional installers would run the cable alongside factory wire looms through rubber conduit to the tailgate for a clean look.

Sedan and UTE are much easier.

        • Depends on car can be a peice of piss but a right pain.

Been using Viofo dashcams for years. Great bang for buck. Keep in mind if you have 24/7 recording you will burn through cheap microSD cards over time, you can buy special "dashcam sd cards" but I just get the cheapest ones and replace them every few years if they die. The dashcams have been solid though

      • My A119 Duo plus die after 3 years. Could not get it turn on again, it just get hot with a black screen

    • It's good spec-wise, design is also good as the lens gets quite close to the windscreen to minimise glare and reflections.

But for some reason, even with those hardware and design advantages, the images are not the best.

It gets recommended a lot because of good value, anything better from BlackVue or Thinkware are significantly more expensive.

  • Are these prices listed here excluding tax? Mine is coming up as $285 (front + rear + HW kit) and using AUMY10.

You have to pay in USD, use a fee free credit card via PayPal. Avoid AliExpress or PayPal exchange commissions.

    It's US$176.66 with AUMY10. Current Visa exchange rate is 1 USD = 1.557388 AUD, so total AU$275.13

Would have been $268.90 if AUMY16 worked.

  • Would love to pull the trigger on this, but have read several issues with battery drain in the HEV Hyundai Tucson, with no real solutions.

    • I'm planning to try "Dongar Pro", you can either hardwire it into your fuses or into your auto dimming rearview mirror. It comes with a little hub that allows you to switch power mode, from ignition only, to 4 hours after you turn off car, or continuous until battery is low:

      https://dongar.tech/products/dongar-pro?srsltid=AfmBOoovxbxT…

      • Oh interesting. I notice that Hyundai isn’t listed as a compatible vehicle. What vehicle are you trying it on?

        • Gonna try it on a Nissan, which I believe uses the 10pin adapter. The best thing to do is to check your rearview mirror and see if it has a wiring harness that goes into it. And then check how many pins the plug has.

From memory, Dongar has adapters for 3-4 different plugs, 10pins, 7pins and I think 2 more?

    • If you enable parking mode and configure it for a lengthy period, it will drain just about any 12V auxiliary battery. Install a dedicated dash cam battery, not cheap, but you won't have battery drain issues again. I got one installed on mine about a year ago and configured the dash cam with 2-hour parking mode. It's all good thus far.
