Coles Express Milk 2L for $2.00 (Staying down)

258

Coles Express has also joined Milk War by making 2L milk at $2.00 from $3.20 & it's gonna stay at this price. It's good for people like me who don't have to drive & park to Coles sometimes specially to get milk only.
Mod - If you think it's not a deal then please move this to Forum. Thanks

they were making huge profit from instore sales at coles express. but i guess thats were most of their profit comes from. i dont think petrol stores make a lot on fuel

    • You are correct. Petrol stations make no money selling fuel just like discount airlines make no money on fares (their money is made from food/drinks/services you buy on board).

      • It's a lot more than people think. They also make a much higher margin on their premium fuels.

        • Source?

        • +1

          i work in the industry

depending on the replacement cost, generally speaking servos will lose up to 5 cents or make up to 10 cents per litre

average servo does about 1-2 million litres of fuel a month, with the big highway servos doing up to 40 million litres a year

    • i've seen a break down before, they make about 5 cents or something small like that per litre.

From memory, 40% was wholesale, and another 30% or something was fromt GST and excise taxes. the other 20ish % is wages, rent overheads etc etc.

i wish i could remember where i saw it, to link ya

      • First result of Google search of "petrol cost breakdown" is this.

Coles express paid me 14c to take 2L of milk yesterday.

  • woolies caltex also have $2 for 2l of milk!

    • Do they? I checked a few months back and it was all fairly pricey - but good to hear if so.

  • +6

I think it's a deal, however I do feel sorry for all the local small business milk bars who will be slaughtered by this move from Coles and Woolies.

    • +1

that is something rambo would say

    • -3

beatdown the local store owners and beatdown the farmers.. All to save me a buck. Sweet ^^

    • +2

pfft what milk bars? no milk bars where I am.

      • +3

        ever wonder why?

  • -7

Coles milk tastes horrible, I wouldn't buy it if it was $1 and the only milk at the service station…

    • +2

I don't think your taste conception qualifies a neg.

      • Unless you are a wizard who tastes stuff to mix in their concoctions.

      • I negged because of this also: "& it's gonna stay at this price."

    • -2

Coles full cream milk is the same stuff as Dairy farmers full cream permeate-free milk. Comes from the same production line, just different bottles and label.

  • They are removing the 2c a litre discount when you spend $2 or more in store as of Feb, which allows them to lower milk bread etc prices.

    • +2

Are they? Bastards!!! Fine I will only get my milk from IGA now. They have either Pura or Masters milk anyway

      • 7/11 also has a bread/milk deal.

    • +26

Down Down, your commented will get voted down

      • lmfao sir

      • the term and condition of the down down stay whateve is only good for 6 months and revised again

      • haha

  • -3

It's now the usual price, not a deal, belongs in the forums

    • +9

this is at coles express, not coles.

Much more convenient, often open 24/7. Does not belong in forums.

    • +1

      Yep. Not a deal.

      • +1

        Agreed not a deal

I have a general problem with Wesfarmers business plan and believe that the consumer will be the loser in the end when we have a true Duopoly in the retail sector in this country.
In particular I object to the way they have treated dairy farmers since the dairy industry was deregulated.
Don't buy Coles milk, this is OZbargain after all and what they are doing is unaustralian.

    • +3

And what happens now when there is a hiccup in the Coles milk production and/or deliveries, the milk shelves are bare. I certainly agree with your sentiment, I just wish their was a viable alternative for me to the duopoly when it comes to groceries. As it is I already prefer to support independent servos…

    • +6

Agree entirely as well - all of a sudden there is only 2 choices of milk at coles - their brand and one other. Half of our shopping trips now are to other supermarkets, just so we can get a choice for the milk we want to taste.

If they go back and check our Flybuys usage, they will see we hardly ever buy milk any more and shop there a lot less overall - even though its the closest to us.

    • +3

      couldn't agree more
      i'll buy australian if it's a bargain!

    • +2

^^^ This is epic and I think everybody who is a little misguided must read. Kudos to you VitualDS for hopefully opening up a few minds :)

    • +5

You're right, most people don't think about these things when making purchases, which is why I raised the issue. Most of what you mentioned have local alternatives and by not buying coles/safe way brand milk is a really easy and fairly inexpensive way to support local businesses.
By all means if you think it is right that coles forces farmers to sign contracts to sell their milk at 13 cents per l when it costs 30 cents to produce, then go ahead, save those few cents. It won't be long till we are drinking Chinese milk.

      • +1

You are seriously trying to say that dairy farmers lose 17c for every litre of milk they sell?
That is an absurd statement, if they had an option of signing a contract that offered them 43% of what it costs them to make a product then they wouldn't sign it.
They don't make much from Coles milk but they make money, throwing out fake numbers does nothing but complicates the matter.

For all of those that bad mouth Coles and woollies for their milk, I'd love to hear their stance on Costco and Aldi milk. Both Costco and aldi sell their milk for less than Coles and woollies.
They aren't brought in to the picture because but does that mean they are paying 3-4x what Coles and woollies do and then make nothing on the milk that they sell?

I don't believe for a minute that farmers are giving away their money to Coles and woollies.

        • +3

Yes I am serious. Their tier 2 milk is regularly bought at this price. The tier 1 milk is bought at a higher price but only a limited amount. If they don't sign and sell their milk wtf are they supposed to do with it.
This is the reason why so many farmers are walking away.

Costco and Aldi are the same, and my stance is the same, they simply dont have the same market share as the big two, and generally speaking I like the fact that there is more competition around.

        • So what you're saying is that all the milk producers in australia are in essence colluding to fix prices of selling their milk at a deliberate loss?

          bloody genius…

        • No, since deregulation the producers have no say in the price.

    • +2

People dont think about Unaustralian when they buy games/BR from UK retailers,

Globalization has been happening for ages, but its the internet that has been the biggest change in this regard. No longer are we an isolated island and peasants to the importers that bend us over backwards at the counter, instead we now have the freedom to boycott them and order from overseas online. I am more than happy to pay a small added price for local goods, but when they are quite literally raping us with huge markups I will choose to source from overseas.

      buy American, European, Japanese cars,

I bought and drive an Aust made car, but the biggest problem here is that locally we simply don't make the range of cars to suit everyones needs best.

  • +2

i've been boycotting coles milk for a long time

spend $1 more and get Pauls full fat 2L or $2 more and get the light version

permeate free, proper milk. Tastes like milk also, and gives profits to proper dairies.

    • +1

are you joking? pauls is behind woolies for their $1/L milk, Norco is behind Aldi, Pura/Dairy Farmer is behind coles. all that money just goes to pocket of the shareholders, not farmers.

      • Don't know about the rest and can't be stuffed finding out but Pura/DF is not behind Coles.

      • +1

Norco is a co-op so and pay the most for their milk, so definitely better to buy Norco. The rest are all owned by multi nationals so buy from Farmers Direct.

    • +1

and gives profits to proper dairies

      got any proof of that?

  • -7

So now Ahpoo gets to try and upsell you some cheap milk along with that chocolate bar when you go in to pay for your fuel?

    • +2

      Apu*, sparky…

  • yes we all love a bargain but at what cost?
    please exercise some wisdom
coles does not care for you just like the banks and politicans

  • Absolutely disgusting milk that is $2 for a reason.

Dairy Farmers milk is 2 for $5 many fruit shops.

    • They are both the same milk. Seen it being bottled. They just switch bottles and labels to change fron Dairy Farmers to Coles brand. It is good milk at a low price. Just affects the farmers.

      • What a genius "Just affects the farmers.".
So we should all just buy cheap milk and screw the farmers they can hang on as long as possible and when they can no longer produce the milk we all so love, perhaps we can have some high quality chinese UHT milk.
MMM yummy goodness, your coffee cup will end up with growths putting that stuff in it.
So anyway the story ends with the consumer being the one that loses out.

  • I still buy PURA but at Woolies, as Coles does not carry PURA. Tastes like real milk and cost little more to support the industry that is being killed. Soon we will have milk imported and then we will all cry again. 'You reap what you sow'.

Not going to Neg it as it is surely qualified as a deal, but it will remain a sour point and get no vote from me! Not that it matters but I make my point.

    • as Coles does not carry PURA.

      yes it does…

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one that boycotts supermarket milk makes me feel all warm and fuzzy :) I only buy Harvey Fresh or if its not available then I'll get Brownes, I'd rather go without than buy Coles/Woolies milk.
BTW does anyone know if the coles/woolies milk is sourced in WA or does travel over from the east coast?

    • makes me feel all warm and fuzzy

that's probably the bacteria in it…

  • +3

i'm not sure why i bother commenting on here sometimes. Everyone already knows it all!

  • You have to love the diary industry shills in this thread. They goughed out on the prices for more than a decade due to their monopoly like "councils" which artificiality controlled the price of milk, and now they're crying poor because the tables have been turned on them.

    Karma is a bitch.

    • +3

exactly - there is a difference in buisness model between - we used to make heaps $$$ but now we make little $ vs we used to make $ but now we lose money on everything we sell.

      WTF.

Its like people making horse saddles complaining they dont make money as they used to when everybody rode horses. If you're not making money - either sell up to somebody who thinks they can or figure out a way to make money. Its your own fault if you decide to sell something at a long term loss.

    • +3

You have to love the diary industry

I haven't bought a diary for years, ever since i got my first smartphone…
