  • I have to ask, but wouldn't you be better off paying an extra $5 for this:

  • Got this a couple of days ago. It's a good choice.

I always have a hard time deciding which SSD to choose. 😅

I don't mind of PCIE 4.0 SSDs, but I plan to use it for the OS, web development and games.

From what I’ve researched, it appears to have DRAM. So, would this be a good option?

    • +1

      yes

    • +8

you won't feel any difference between PCIE gen 3, 4 or 5 for those use cases. go for any budget-friendly branded ssd with low instances of issues.
it's weird to hype on DRAM when most users barely if ever do large file copy. like my officemate who spent a fortune of a Landcruiser who never intended to go offroad (just in case, he says), when any SUV at half the price would suit his needs.

  • I was just about to order this.. is it worth the extra $21

Mainly care about efficiency and temps

Edit: Looks to be $193 here with free delivery.

    • T500 is worse than KC3000 due to worse controller generating more heat and being less reliable

      • +3

FWIW I have T500 as primary and KC3000 for games and T500 runs about an average 10° cooler.
Just ran a full scan on both and KC peaked at 49° while T only got to 36°.
The location of the drives might affect this though as the T is above the GPU while the KC is under it.
Also as per tempestswitch below I need to update the KC FW, not sure if that will make even more difference.

        • Thanks for checking. I'm sure location does matter but the T500 does review as the cooler drive anyway.

    • -1

T500 uses a newer Phison controller, which utilises more bandwidth. It also uses 232L NAND flash, which is newer (to utilise the higher bandwidth).

      Review: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crucial-2tb-t500-ssd-re…

At the same price, T500. You will find T500 does better in most benchmark apps.

However, based on the review, it doesn't seem to be well optimised for PS5. That said, I would suggest a cheaper SSD for PS5.

    Just curious…. why NEWDELHI?

    PSA on this SSD.
There is a known problem with the older firmware on the controller chip on this SSD.
Make sure to update to the latest firmware to fix.

Link to Reddit thread about it.

I got this 2 days ago from Centrecom. It had the latest firmware out of the box. YMMV

    Another PSA:

Some users report issues using it in external enclosures with Mac. Can confirm that half the time is doesn’t detect regardless of 5x different enclosures. It’s a bit of a luck of the draw if it’ll get detected.

    • +2

Can confirm, had a similar problem. Had to use a usb-c to usb-a cable for it to detect.. had to reformat.. no issues since..

    • Just looking for SSD for Mac mini enclosure and found threads saying similar issues with Kingston chips. Any suggestions on what works well with Mac?

  • Can anyone let me know if this SSD is good to use in a PS5?

    • Good

    • +1

Yes but ideally you'll want to put on a heatsink for use in a ps5.

It's double sided. Good for desktop.

No, the fact that its double-sided doesn't mean its better, or even good, for a desktop, its a warning that it may not fit in a laptop because its too thick.

Double-sided is just a way of getting more capacity on a 2280 SSD if you're only using old low-capacity chips. That's a warning its probably an old design. Also the fact you've got chips on the top and bottom may result in difficulty keeping it cool with heat sinks that only cool the ones on the top.

    • +2

I thought you kind of want the NAND to run warm, and it's really just the controller that needs the cooling.

      • Which is why SSD heatsinks spread the heat out evenly between the controller and NAND chips.

      • I thought you kind of want the NAND to run warm …

        Why?

        • Because NAND likes to be warm?
I don’t know either, but you can probably find the reasoning online.

  • +1

    What's going on with 4TB pricing? :-(

  • +1

Any heatsink recommendations for ps5 with this?

    • +1

The elecgear one from Amazon for $30 is really good

    • Be Quiet! MC1 - I've got this in my PS5 for the 1TB version of this drive and haven't had any issues. Costs like 20 bucks or less though depends which stores have stock etc.

  • Decent enough for main OS boot drive?

    • +1

      Perfect for boot drive

      • Would this be okay to run as an external drive over USB-C attached to a Legion Go?

        • +1

This is double-sided which means it is thicker, so make sure the enclosure supports that. As far as I know, there aren't many support double-sided SSD

          • @Meteor Anarcom: Someone commented a while ago about NVMe Gen4 drives/cases which effectively operated with the same latency & read/write as an internal SSD.

Are you familiar with this at all? I'm trying to find out if it's an NVMe Gen4 thing or specific drives/enclosures.

            • +1

@BinaryPirate: It’s possible in theory with Thunderbolt 5. It’ll still have slightly higher latency and slower speeds but it’ll be close.

              If your PC doesn’t have TB5, the most you’d get out of USB4 & TB4 is 5000MB/s.

Most people don’t have computers with USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 either, so they are unlikely to see much more than 1250MB/s which bottlenecks even PCIe Gen3 NVMe SSDs

              • @brosk1s: Thanks for that. It's only a Legion Go so no TB but turns out the USB-C ports are both USB4.

  • +1

I have this drive as my boot/os.

    Very fast.

    Highly recommended.

This is currently a better deal: https://www.centrecom.com.au/crucial-t500-2tb-pcie-gen4-nvme…

Crucial T500 for $193 with coupon, slightly better SSD overall according to benchmarks and until 15/06 there is a promotion to redeem a $20 Woolies gift card with purchase making the overall cost $173

  • I realise gen 5 has higher speeds but is it worth paying $400 bux for a gen5 2tb or $200 for a gen4 2tb for gaming (my mboard supports gen5). In other words do I buy the crucial t705 gen5. 2tb or this at a better price?

    • Gen 5 is useless on gaming. Don't waste your money. T705 is trash

      • Thanks for your feedback, it helped me secure this deal

  • Waiting for a $300 4TB deal

    Can always dream

  • I think the KC3000 still has a little more storage than 4TB, which gives it an advantage.

  • Code expired? 17/5

Edit: "The coupon code you entered couldn't be applied to your order"

    • Still works for me. Check spelling and space

      • Jfc, I had "NEWDEHLI".

  • sorry for a newb question. would this work on a laptop that can do M2280? is this the cheapest 2tb SSD around?

  • Is this a good price? History shows it's gone down to $149 for 2tb for black friday 2024.

    • I bought two that time perhaps. I remember Scorptec ran a promo for KC3000, $149 for 2TB and $299 for 4TB limited for 100 and 50 quantity.

Also, this had been that price through JW Computers via Everyday Market after 30%ish cashback.

$187 might not be a perfect price in history but good enough for now compared with other competitors

  • Noob here. Looking to swap my boot drive ssd to 2tb. This or sn7100 for my asrock a620i ITX motherboard?

    • This. KC3000 has DRAM so performs better as a boot drive
