[SEE NOTE] Mel/Syd to Shanghai - Z Class from $769 Return Flying China Eastern

532

Mod: Please see this comment. These are not business class tickets despite what Zuji says. They are economy class. See China Eastern & Flyertalk

Approx September-November 2013 Period.

Hunting for cheap tickets to China, and found these flights. Some dates have already gone back to Economy Class, but most dates are still Business Class. - since there are only a certain no. of Business Class seats on each plane, they'll most likely sell out pretty quickly.

I added on a return domestic flight to another city which added around $30 bucks to the price. (ie. Beijing)

Dates are around the September to November period. Still plenty of tiks. Good Luck.

Reading their website, planes are updated to A332s in October flying from Melbourne.

This is the cheapest its probably been for Business Class Tickets - especially for a 10-11 hour flight. Direct flights from Melbourne are still available - which is good since we don't have to switch planes in Sydney.

You also get 2 x 32kg Check-in luggage (64kg in total).

Example Search would be

Melbourne- Shanghai (10th October)
Shanghai - Melbourne (27th October)
$769.66
You can pay with any credit card including AMEX without the surcharge or go to Flight Centre to price beat if you like.

  • Looks good :)

    • Nope. Outbound International is definitely business..

Do Melbourne to Shanghai on the 10th to the 26th as an example. Direct flights (no stops)- All business class.

  • Seems cheap!!

  • Great deal! Is this a Zuji exclusive?

    • I can't find it any where else, but my local flight centre matched it. - purely because I wanted to confirm it wasn't a Zuji.com.au error. - Business Class to Shanghai in October is pretty unbelievable for this price.

    • Seem's like it, min I found it for was $820.58, fare is dumpable, bringing it to $581 (if you know what you're doing)

      • dumpable? How did you bring it down to $581?

        • You can remove the YQ (fuel surcharge) by adding on another flight, for eg. your departing city is A and arrival is B; your route would look something like A-B-A for a return trip. Pairing on another flight (ensure it's after you completed your trip as airlines will cancel your itinerary) with no intentions of flying it can remove the fuel surcharge, this is known as a dump fare. So your route now looks something like A-B-A/X-Y

        • Yeah, but with the fuel dumping by adding X-Y, aren't you having to book AND pay for another leg (X-Y)? Also, depending on your fare conditions, you might not be able to get a refund after you cancel X-Y.

        • You look for a city pair X-Y which has the cheapest price where the fare is much lower than the YQ surcharge you're trying to reduce. You do NOT cancel the fare for a refund at all, you simply do a no show. If you try to cancel it, they will figure out what you've done.

        • Yes, so you still lose the $$$ from the No-Show. But make sure it's a cheap 'un. Does it have to be the same airline?

          In this case:

          Melb-Shanghai-Melb/Bei-Shanghai

          Would that work?

        • +2

          Enter it into matrix.itasoftware.com

When you see a "END ON END PERMITTED" or "ADD ONS PERMITTED" under fare conditions, the fare is most likely dumpable.

Even with the additionally dump-able flight, the cost is much cheaper. Here is a fare breakdown:

Fare 1: Carrier MU ZLR60KB SYD to SHA (rules)
Passenger type ADT, round trip fare, booking code Z
          Covers SYD-PVG (Business)
          AU$225.00
Fare 2: Carrier MU ZLR60KB SHA to SYD (rules)
Passenger type ADT, round trip fare, booking code Z
          Covers PVG-SYD (Business)
          AU$225.00
Australian Passenger Movement Charge (AU) AU$55.00
Australian Int'l Passenger Service Charge (WY) AU$26.39

          (YQ) AU$239.40

          (YQ) AU$8.00
Australian Int'l Passenger Service Charge (WY) AU$26.39
People's Republic of China Airport Fee (CN) AU$15.40

          Subtotal per passenger AU$820.58
          Number of passengers x1

          TOTAL AIRFARE & TAXES AU$820.58

When we remove YQ by adding another flight, you're saving 239.40, given that you can dump the entire fuel surcharge.

        • Yes but when you add the flight to remove YQ, how much is the flight? You'll have to pay for that flight (including possible fuel surcharges for the flight to cancel YQ no?).

        • It's normally a short, cheap domestic flight. I found some that costs as low as $35 that saved me up to $400-500 from SYD-JFK.

For this itinerary, I found one that cost $50.90.

Why would you pay for a fare that cost more than the YQ surcharge? Defeats the purpose…

        • I wouldn't pay for a fare that costs more than YQ.

Note that the add-on fare can be a one-way ticket (possibly including domestic flights). I haven't investigated whether it needs to be the same airline.

        • How can I remove YQ by adding another flight ? Please….

        • Yes, please.
Tried few attempts, doesn't work. I did add a domestic flight, but didn't remove the YQ. Did I miss some steps?

      • wow fantastic! thank you for this.

  • Wow. I thought about $2500 was cheap last year.
I didn't book it… company was paying so i booked Air China for about $4000 for those all important Star Alliance miles!

  • +1

These fares are booking into Z class with fare basis ZLR60KB if anyone is trying to get a travel agent to book these. There appears to be plenty of availability showing in GDS. I do suspect this has been incorrectly priced by the airline, seeing as these are cheaper than the sale economy fares.

Here are the full fare rules for this fare basis: http://pastebin.com/bzjki5bn

    • +1

I can confirm this is correct, as my e-tickets have that reference as the fare basis.

  • are all the outbound flights on Shanghai airlines?

People interested might want to check out this thread:

From what I understood is that from June on Z class is actually an economy bucket.

    • +1

Yeah, read up on it as well whilst I was trying to see what Business Class was like. Well, that sucks.

    • +2

Yes, glad other (more knowledgable) people have picked up on it too. This backs up that it's an economy ticket!!

  • I'm probably just blind but where in the booking process does it say we get two luggage? ^^"

  • +4

    This is an ECONOMY fare.

This fare is Z Class which effective 30/06/2013 is an ECONOMY ticket. As users have posted above, the fare basis is ZLR60KB which is Z Class. As announced on the Chinese version of the site, flights BEFORE (and inclusive) 30/06/13 in Z class is Business, but Z class is Discount Economy for flights after 30/06/13

    http://www.easternmiles.com/bn/miles/mu_flight.jsp

Look at the third table (After 30/06/13). Z earns 0% bonus points and status.

The second table (before 30/06/13), Z is Business Class so earns 200%

My guess is that Zuji is not aware of the change and is matching Z class as Business Class, but when the ticket is issued by the airline, Z class fare WILL land you in Economy.

    • But if eTickets says Business Class would they have to honour it? Also, what about the double luggage allowance?

      • +1

Your actual e-ticket issued by the airline will show your Booking Class. That will show Z class for your flight (after 30/06/13).
The definition of Z class according to the airline is (Discount) ECONOMY for flights after 30/06/13.

Your Zuji Itinerary MAY show "Business Class" and you may have a legal case, but it would be something you'd have to take up with Zuji. (I've never booked with them)
I personally would NOT risk it.

Please do NOT confuse an AIRLINE e-ticket with a travel agent (Zuji) itinerary.

        • I've emailed them. I'll let you guys know what they say. :)

        • -5

Regardless, it's still a great price. Who gives a damn about the "term" the website used.

        • +2

I'm not sure you understand. Business class and Economy class are completely different products. The website (Zuji) is using "Business" but selling a Z class ticket which the airline defines as "economy".

Would you give a damn if you bought a "House" but it was actually a "shed"?

I wouldn't call it a "great price", but $800 for Economy return to Shanghai is reasonable and can be found pretty often.

        • Haha.. very apt metaphor; 'house' and 'shed' is exactly right.

      • Double luggage allowance is a privilege or a Business class ticket. Because Z Class fares after 30/06/13 are economy, you wouldn't be entitled to it

        • why should we care about whether or not "z class" is business class? they should honor it if its their mistake, or offer full refund.

        • You will likely get a cancellation as per the FT thread with Orbitz (parent company of Zuji).

    • +1

hmmmmm, nice find joequimby. Wonder how this will end :)

  • am i blind or what? cant see any good price? i do have to go to sh in the beginning of oct or end of sep

    • Search MEL-PVG RTN J Class Sep 4-22 and you get $769.63 inc taxes. This is repeatable on Bestflights, PHT, etc.

      • -4

        but i live in syd… :(

        • +1

How about doing a search yourself as I get the same price from SYD as well for those dates.

        • i am playing around the dates.
i have to be in SH on 5/10. i wont stay there more than 2 weeks. the best price i'v found so far is $885.45.

not sure if i should book this one as business class, or (maybe) save a couple of hundred $$ and go with economic class.

        • i found out: the last departure date from syd you can book for a special price $769 is 18/9(departure). what a pity.

        • That extra $100 for the dates you want vs the $2000+ this fare should be is a deal killer for you?

  • Bestflight is also showing the same so they may honor it as Business Class.

  • Good price for a business class but I traveled to Shanghai with economy for $800 without too much bargaining in December.

    • -2

      .

  • Travelocity have got the fares at around $880 and labelled as 'Business Class'

  • Thanks OP

I'm going to Neg this to raise a red flag. I'm sure a number of people will read the title of the thread, jump onto the bargain and book their ticket. Hopefully if I neg it, an alarm will set in their mind and they'll bother scrolling down to see my comment. If you see my neg and still book it, then I've done everything I can to help you.

    THIS IS AN ECONOMY FARE

This gives you a Fare in Z Class. For flights departing after 30/06/13, Z Class has been changed from Business to Economy.

    http://www.easternmiles.com/bn/miles/mu_flight.jsp
Look at the third table (After 30/06/13). Z earns 0% bonus points and status.
The second table (before 30/06/13), Z is Business Class so earns 200%

The english version of that page does NOT have the most up to date information:
    http://www.easternmiles.com/uk/miles/mu_flight.jsp

I know booking websites are all showing Z class as "Business Class" but that's because they have yet to update their site. This change has only been announced in the last couple of days, so it would also explain why it's updated on the Chinese version of the site and not the English Version

For the naysayers who reckon www.easternmiles.com isn't an official China Eastern site, you'd be wrong.

  • +7

For the doubters, even the official China Eastern site is not taking online bookings for flights departing 28/06/13

    http://au.ceair.com/muovc/main/en_AU/News/News2256.html

Important Notice: Suspending online booking service for flights departing after 28th June 2013

    Dear customer,

We are sorry to inform you from (and inclusive of) 30th November 2012, this website will stop selling flights departing after 28th June 2013 due to adjustments of booking classes among Sky Team airlines, If you would like to book a China Eastern flight departing after 28th June 2013, please contact China Eastern Australian Office or travel agent.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you in advance for your understanding. We will publish the news to inform you the recovery date after the adjustment. Thanks for your attention.

" If you would like to book a China Eastern flight departing after 28th June 2013, please contact China Eastern Australian Office or travel agent."

      Zuji is a travel agent!

      • +1

        How frustrating…

"due to adjustments of booking classes"
How about reading the announcement for what it says instead of reading what you want to read?

        • -8

hey, quimby joe, you edited your post.

you called lostix an idiot, now you changed it to "how frustrating…"

          you are so nice.

        • +5

Yeap, does that show how frustrated s/he is making me? S/he isn't listening and off in la-la land that they got a business class ticket.

I'm giving up my time to warn people that they are not buying what they are think they are buying. I've made a number of impulses purchases that I don't need because of posts here. I don't want heaps of people packing their bags and heading off to China just because of this deal, thinking they got a Business class bargain only to be disappointed (and angry) during the flight and their holiday.

If they know it's more than likely to be an economy ticket and make a conscious decision to holiday in China, then by all means!!

        • joequimby- Neil has now linked the topic to your post Warning people so I think you achieved what you wanted to achieve. But it could of been done without the name calling IMO.

        • +7

Nope, just 'lostix' for his/her oblivious attitude.

Negs - who cares? Life's too short!
I wouldn't want people buying a holiday unless they actually wanted to go to that destination! Think of the time and other costs involved in a holiday.

        • +3

          Indeed and noted.

      • -3

Hahah so true lostix. Even though I believe any bookings will be cancelled, even their TAs are showing it as Business Class post June 28th :)

  • Sorry, double post. Look up ^^^

  • +2

Shanghai, the most exciting place in the world I reckon. Been there twice and after coming back to Perth I am like. What the hell I am doing here? Better than HK I reckon cause its alot cheaper:)

Love the Scenery over looking the river on the Bund.

    • I'm not sure about the most exciting place in the world, but it is a great city. I lived there for 6 months back in 2002, and was there 6 times last year. in the 10 years i was away, they built an entire city larger than Melbourne CBD.

culturally there's not a lot going on, but plenty of fun to be had if young and single. A really good expat community.

..I still prefer Hong Kong though - but i haven't spent as much time in Hong Kong.

the world's a big place though, there's plenty of exciting places to visit and see.

      • +1

have to disagree with the not much culturally going on bit. ad i was there for 60 days and everyday there is something going on. such as a show, a art gallery opening, a new circus coming into town, a new gadget show, a new walking strip with east meets west designs. i remember there is a place in shanghai where the shops opens in an old colonial alley way. in fact for the entire time there i always find there is alot to do. if you get bored you can buy bus or train ticket which connects to other parts of the cities outside shanghai any hour, and its dirt cheap, $20 and few hours later you are in another city. i do think Starbucks are way over priced though, $7.80 for a cup of coffee is bit much. Well, wish my company will send me there for longer as I am not sure why is Perth still so boring 20 years i been living here. i am orginally from melbourne. lol

    • +2

Lol.. I moved to Perth from Sydney and I have the exact same sentiment.. "What the hell am I doing here?". ;)

Shanghai and HK are pretty awesome places. Shanghai cityscape at night is truly a beautiful sight.

  • +1

Thanks for the heads up, it sounded too good to be true

  • I am just wandering if the confusion is caused by the adjustment after 30/6, why I choose business class in July and Aug and get like 3000+. Seems only valid between Sep. to Oct

Again, its too good to be true. But whatif it is true….

  • I bought 2 tickets in early November, I will ring the airline and confirm if true or mistake and will advice the outcome, worse case scenario is I will get my money back, hope to fly business class to Shanghai, cross my fingers….

    • Did you end up calling Zuji?

    • Rang this morning and they confirmed that the tickets are economy, I said that the only reason I purchesed the tickets was because they were business and all correspondence from them showed that to be correct.

they have escalated this to the right department and will advice within 48 hrs, they said that I will not be let down, what it means I do not know, hopefully the will honor the class

      stay tuned…

      • Oh, damn.. Which number did you call? I tried calling the 1300 one.. Chose the option (I think 5) for eTicket enquiries and it went to voicemail.

      • I got a full refund but it will take a while because they have to get the money back from the airline or something. =.="

  • Off-topic, but since when do they use Z to denote Business Class anyway? I always thought it was J Class?

    • +1

J is the main class, there's multiple sub classes such as C, D, I usually.

    • +2

Each Cabin class (First/Business/PEco/Economy) has a number of Fare classes (Fare Basis Code).
The FBC differs depending on the rules for that fare (ie. maximum stay, stopovers permitted, changes, etc).

There is no worldwide standard for FBCs so they differ between Airlines.
Example: T class on Qantas is Premium Economy but T class on Singapore Airlines is Discount Economy.

In saying that, there are commonly used FBCs for certain classes. That includes your example of J class = Business Class
Other examples: Qantas Business C/D/I/J, Singapore Airlines Business C/D/J/Z and quite a few others use C/D/J for Business. BUT, Vietnam airlines uses J class fare for an Economy ticket.

Some airlines (not many from a quick search) use Z class fares for Business Class:
Singapore Airlines, Air France, China Airlines, China Eastern (until 30/06/13), Kenya Airlines, KLM, Korean Air

      • Wow, what a mixup! I've never flown CE before, but I have flown with Skyteam and thought Biz class is Z across all carriers.

        Thanks!

  • +2

I'm going to neg this too….

I've had an itinerary with a Chinese airline before, itinerary says Business class, but because it was actually in a economy fare class I ended up sitting in economy.

They didn't speak much English at the airport so my complaints fell on deaf ears.

  • Z class = zombie class

  • +1

    FYI.

I ended up getting Flight Centre to buy the tickets originally.

After asking them to confirm flights, Flight Centre confirmed change of class - Z in October is Economy.

However since they have issued the tickets and the tickets (not the itinerary) does say 'Business' Class on it, they decided to upgrade us to the real Business Class instead of refunding.

    Fantastic Customer service from them.

    • Well done for scoring the upgrade :) Wonder if others managed to get it too.

      • Oh, nice. Very lucky indeed. I ended up with a full refund from Zuji.

  • Well done to all those have pick up on this… If it wasn't for me placing this on Ozbargain, I would have been stung and feeling %#$%#$%#$ off when arriving at the airport and finding out I'm flying economy and most likely having to pay for a massive excess baggage fee. (thinking i'm flying business)

    • Zuji actually still talking to the airline, so far no decision made. surely if when they reach an agreement, they'll let customers know?!

  • Recieved an email today from Zuji that my booking is confirmed business class.

    • And you haven't given this deal a + vote? :)

I still wouldn't trust what Zuji say… I would call the airline, quote my e-ticket number & ask which class it is. You may well find you will be sitting in economy.

      • Not sure who negged me, but I was in the same situation with a Chinese airline (itinerary from another company said business class, but airlines fare bucket was for economy).

I ended up travelling in economy, despite it clearly saying business on the itinerary. I would still double check with the airline, as the people at Zuji might just be looking at your itinerary and not aware that the fare bucket changes mid this year.

        • -1

I think at this point, Zuji has very much been aware of this situation, so the result must come from the airline.

        • Just because one customer service agent/area in zuji is aware of it, doesn't mean that all are :)

I think its still prudent to call the airline and confirm, just to be sure.

    • +1

Did you do something to make them or they just offered? I called twice to check and they just kept telling me wait.

      • I had to emailed them twice too.

    • Would you be able to screenshot the email? All I was offered was a full refund.. Would have actually gone with the flight it it was business class.

  • +1

I rang the airline this morning and confirmed that the tickets are economy class and I should deal with the travel agent to sort this out, I rang them for the the third time and was advised that resolution should come very soon, most likely I suspect a refund

    • +1

I'm pretty sure Zuji people are just call centre, so wouldn't have a clue. Even with Flight Centre staff, they needed to escalate it Head Office.

Has Zuji.com.au gotten back to you as yet?

      • I'll be getting a full refund. I got an email confirmation confirming the refund but have been advised that it could take 2-3 months for the actual money to come back.

  • +1

Good thing to note though to all those that have bought the tiks… you'll probably travel free after ACCC gets a hold of it… Travellers do not have to be aware of what alphabet an airline uses.. They only need to be aware of a ticket saying "economy", "business" or "first class". If you've got a ticket that says business, and you travel in economy, well I'm pretty sure there's a big fine coming China Eastern's way.

Only thing you need to note is you needed to have bought from an 'Australian agent' or 'website'. ACCC only has jurisdiction on .com.au websites.

    • Good thing to note though to all those that have bought the tiks… you'll probably travel free after ACCC gets a hold of it…

The agent (zuji) would need to give you a "remedy".. not necessarily free travel. They would also be well within their rights to give you a full refund via your original method of payment.

      • Plus some interests… That's more like ozbargainers

      • My Dad called China Eastern and they said they had already contacted Zuji in advance about the changes.. Not sure who's mostly at fault, but would love free travel. :D I don't know why it's going to take up to three months for the refund to come through either. Is it usually that slow?

  • has anyone got a positive response from Zuji?

if we whinge hard enough do you guys think we can get a discount or upgrade?

  • Just called them again. Now they are telling me it's out of their hands. Everything has to go through from China Eastern Airline. Stupid Zuji, never dealing with them again.
