    Tempting, but…
"July to September are often the wettest months of the year"
"rainy season in southern Vietnam typically lasts from May to October"

Just seen too much rain here this year, to see more on holiday!

    • Clearly not Victorian!

  • I know Vietjet is infamously bad for domestic flights — consistent delays — within Vietnam. Anyone have had any experience with them flying from Australia?

    • Want to know this too, around $450 direct flight is really tempting!

    • +11

flew last month, 9 hours delay, lucky they informed all the way thru so didn't have to go airport early. Seats are small and average comfort, I didn't purchase pre-paid meals so had to pay them on-board which everything ran out pretty quickly and asked for boiled water to fill up my instant noodle cup (brought a couple onti the plane) but got refused for service due to they also sell instant noodle..lol
They also compensated us $100 for being delayed (there are certain delay hours to get max $100 for international flight ) but went thru a 3rd party insurance in vietnam which is a pain to deal with and I'm still waiting for them to approve it. For me it is okay to flight as they are cheap and direct to Vietnam so just expect you are paying for a bus ride than a plane flight…

      • +1

No free boiled water?? Cant be that cheap right, right?

        • +1

like i said, you expect nothing but a bus ride…this is probably one of the worse budget airline I have been to but they are the only cheap direct flight to Vietnam so leave them the only option 😒

        • -1

They'll also seize all your water at the airport just before boarding.

          • +1

@vovka: That's Australian regulations for flights to Australia on any airline

            • -3

@Thrawn: Just stuff it deep in your bag, they don’t search too hard.

Do you not understand how X-rays work?

                • @1st-Amendment: That's after x-ray, just before you start boarding. You cannot even fill up you bottle from a tap - they physically search all carry ons

                  • @vovka: Can't you take 5 x 100ml bottles of water?

                    • @Gaz1: No. As I said, our bags were searched at the gate. There was a little kiosk after that check point, however they refused to sell water to us. The whole experience at Saigon airport was shocking.

                • @1st-Amendment: Have you ever flown out of SGN on VietJet? See vovka’s comment. I said gate. They do a cursory look inside.

    • +7

you can put the flight number into Flightaware and check how often they are delayed. On the route I booked its about 1 in 7 delayed for many hours.

    • +3

Not many issues when I flew with them end of 2023. Just remember that like all budget airlines everything is DLC. Seats are smaller than your average, can be uncomfortable if you're tall.

    • +8

Flew with them coming back from HCMC about a month ago now. Probably the worst experiance I've had flying.

      • Initially delayed for 3 hours
      • Got onto the bus to take us from the terminal to the plane then sat on the bus for close to an hour. Was then taken back to the terminal for another 2 hour wait.
      • Finally got onto the plane, where we waited for another hour without AC.
      • Just before take off they sprayed the cabin with bug spray - this was actually crazy

Domestically they are OK but I will never fly with them again internationally or reccomend any friends or family fly with them internationally.

      https://en.sggp.org.vn/vietjet-hit-by-flight-delays-amid-hol…

      • +4

The bug spray is an Australian Government requirement: https://www.agriculture.gov.au/biosecurity-trade/aircraft-ve…

      • +1

So you haven't flown international in the past 30yrs?

As for the delays. oh the stories… it's part of international travel

        • +1

I've flown internationally many times and never been fumigated lol wtf

          • @sareth: Most major airlines now use a product that lasts a few months and do it on a servicing basis when nobody is onboard.

        • The bug spray probably ended at least 10-15 years ago. I don’t recall have seen one in my last dozen flights or so into Australia at least since 2015. Back in the 90s, yes they did do that.

          • @timhn: Still a thing for Military aircraft coming into Australia. More budget airlines probably also do it as well I think. Most major airlines now use a product that lasts a few months and do it on a servicing basis when nobody is onboard.

            @timhn:

The bug spray probably ended at least 10-15 years ago

Clearly not since I had it happen to me about a year ago, can't remember which flight but it's not as common as it was.

        • Flown plent to south east asia, never had fumigation.

        • @M00Cow I've flown internationally every year for the past 5 years. Have never been sprayed once until getting on Vietjet.

Have you flown in the past 30yrs? What a moronic question.

          • -1

            @Ding22:

I've flown internationally every year for the past 5 years

            So 5 times then?

5 is not a great sample size when there's about 200,000 international flights a year to and from Australia.

Here's the official document which outlines the requirements for ALL airlines to disinsect their aircraft which includes aerosol spraying:

            https://www.agriculture.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents…

"In preparation for the on-arrival disinsection, an in-flight announcement must be made by the
crew to inform passengers of the upcoming disinsection. The following text should be read:
“Ladies and gentlemen, to conform to health requirements, the aircraft cabin will now be sprayed
            with an insecticide
. This procedure is recommended by the World Health Organization. The
treatment is necessary to avoid introduction of insects at our destination airport that can be carriers
of serious human diseases. Please remain seated and keep the aisles clear while spraying takes place.
If you have a serious medical condition that could be affected by the spray, please press your call
button to discuss this with your cabin crew. Thank you”"

It's a legal requirement for all flights into Australia, they all have to do it. It looks like you just learned something new.

            • @1st-Amendment: I flew back via Thai airways a year ago and they did not spray the cabin so it’s not a legal requirement for them to spray the cabin while passengers are aboard and seated.

Im not saying it doesn’t happen at all and understand the requirements for spraying.

They could spray it before the flight or when the cabin is empty. Not when it’s full and spray our overhead luggage.

I’m a simply giving my feedback as to my experience with VJ.

You aren’t providing any useful feedback for people thinking to buy this, rather just copy pasting material you have googled.

                @Ding22:

I flew back via Thai airways a year ago and they did not spray the cabin

The insect control can use different methods, as my link said, but it is a requirement for ALL flights into Australia. Cabin spraying is merely one of those methods.

Im not saying it doesn’t happen at all and understand the requirements for spraying.

Well clearly you don't understand it, otherwise you would know how it works.

rather just copy pasting material you have googled.

It's called a citation, you learn how these work at high school. Let me know you you finish it and we can talk more.

      • i'm taking joy that you cannot reccomend them, but have still upvoted the deal

Not Sydney, last two times i flew Jetstar which was surprisingly fine. But I've flown Vietjet from KIX to SGN and KUL to DAD and they were both on time.

Saigon immigration is an absolute clustercuss, so book at night at the Ibis across the road. It's lovely.

      • Mind elaborating a little on Saigon immigration? I'm looking to transit in Saigon to get to Hanoi.

        • Last time I went through the queue was two and a half hours, whereas Da Nang is consistently 15-20 minutes. Book a night near the airport if you're connecting. Once you add possible flight delays to immigration you're going to miss whatever connection you have planned.

        • Just lots of lining up and whatever you do don’t make a typo on your visa application or you’re up for $600

        • +1

Went through there a few weeks ago - it's a total mess. Took us 90mins to go through and apparently that's not too bad. We were staying in HCMC but for people with connections it was worse. Not much help for them from ground staff and there was a lot of confusion. SGN is obviously no longer fit for purpose. Saying that, Vietnam Airlines were superb on our flight home to Perth. We were flying from Danang and flights were delayed and we only just made the SGN-PER flight - but only because VA rushed us through.

Vietnam is awesome but SGN is horrible.

      • +1

When we arrived in SGN in January this year it took us about 10 - 15 minutes to go through immigration.

    • I had three domestic flights with them in January this year. One was delayed by about 2 hours (I was informed about the delay), two other were perfectly on time.

    • Never had an issue international, they fly direct red eye which is handy. Id rather that than business class with a stopover.

Domestic is always a gamble due to the amount of flights dropping in daily, there is always delays regardless of airline.

    • I did just pay the lip extra for better seats. Meals were good i flew to Hanoi

  • +3

Just flew Vietjet this week. It was fine. Just like Jetstar. Loved Vietnam.

You have to stay at An Lam Saigon River. It's the most beautiful resort I've ever been in and 25 minutes by speedboat (daily complimentary) from the centre of the city. Go through Luxury Escapes and get free VIP membership from your Citi Premier card for extra resort credit/inclusions.

    • Got a link to it for luxury escapes?

      • Type “An Lam Saigon” at Luxury Escape should get you there.

  • +1

Highly recommend using this to get to Cambodia

  • How's Vietnam Airlines compare to this in terms of delay? Specially for Domestic?

    • +1

Domestic departure times aren't reliable for any airline in Vietnam, just like China. Think of them more as a "Not Earlier Than" time than a schedule.

If you're flying in Vietnam you need to plan to make a whole day of it and to spend a few hundred thousand dong at the airport bar.

    • Flew with them twice early this year. Only an hour flight between Da Nang and Saigon. No delay.

    • My only choice to fly to vn, direct and ok service.

  • +2

Flew with them last December (Ho Chi Minh city to Sydney). I had to be in Sydney airport on tight (for a tight transit flight which wasn't a part of the initial journey with Vietjet). I was worried after reading many comments about their delays etc., but everything went smoothly and they landed a few minutes early. No frills airline, no screens etc but I think I was given some food (basic nothing to write home about). The flight was through midnight so I slept, lack of screen was actually helpful. Price was incredibly cheap for December (I think I spent only $250 one way - which is way less than the nearest price I got which is why I went with them in the first place). As long as you're not 6 foot 10 inch guy or bulky person, then you should be perfectly fine in those seats no issues (I'm 5'8" average build, and seats were just fine for me).

    • +1

Vietjet have 38" pitch exit row seats for $30 more if you book early.

  • If you are on the budget or willing to be flexible with delay, moved seats then it's pretty good value but experience once and I will have to think hard before booking with them again.

Just flew with them in April and both ways got delayed, 16 hours on the flight out and 2 hours on the return. They like to cancel and combine flights, remove allocated seats they will "sort it out" if you notice and complain but thats mean 30 minutes waiting at the checkin desk.

Food on flight was pretty bad too and majority of items on menu are unavailable or "run out"

I would prefer plain old Jetstar still if on budget.

    • 16 hours?! Jesus.. you had to sit in the airport waiting all that time?

      • 13 to 27 hour options for Melbourne 😜

  • -3

I only fly with proud oz airlines.. QANTAS

    • +1

      sarcasm?

      • -2

        For real

  • $443 21may BNE->SGN 5jun SGN-> BNE

  • I also read all the bad reviews, but went with my partner in march. Was smooth, no checkin issues, flight back was ~20 mins late leaving due to operational issues but not really their fault (airport groundstop).
Paid for meals, they were eh but fine. Got extra leg room seats for free, took a big bag of snacks. Pretty good IMO

  • +1

I’m Vietnamese and flew with them 4 times every year from MELBOURNE and HANOI. Never had any delay. Try to book DIRECT FLY because some flights are being transited in SGN.

I only had experience with MEL-HAN. And they’re cheap if you booked extremely early (maybe 3 months prior) or very near (I had to wait until 2 weeks prior to the flight to get the cheapest price lol.

It’s a budget airline so I wouldn’t expect anything. You can buy extra seat and lay down like a first class with $100 prior to departure.

  • +2

    Words of wisdom

Pay extra and fly Vietnam Airlines

    • Or even Jetstar

  • -1

Shit airlines.. at those fares, it is not a bargain. You are just paying for what you get anyway. I’d only book with them for my mother-in-law or my other enemies.

  • Another happy VietJet customer, have flown them four times PER SGN and haven’t had any real issues. On time departure, clean planes, nice staff. They check your bag for water bottles when entering the gate at SGN which is silly and the seats are small (my knees touch the seat in front but I’m tall) but otherwise great airline for the price.

  • Worst airlines I've ever flown with. 3/4 flights delayed over 4 hours each. 1 flight cancelled and forced me to pay for a new fare same day. Shocking/ non existent customer service, never again!

  • Worst airline I’ve flown international and domestic, and I’ve done a fair bit of south east Asia travel and not precious about airlines. Avoid

  • +1

Absolutely terrible airline. Every flight was delayed in our trip in April (including international) with no compensation. Have filled out their form for delays to get a measly $30 back but no response back. They also have a empty seats program which is the must scummiest thing ever. They pack all the passengers in the back of the plane and then ask people for cash if they want to upgrade for an entire row or empty seats. Would never fly vietjet again - makes jetstar feel like a full service airline.

  • +2

    Positives:
    * When actually on time (they have a tight turnaround time window so any delays are compounded)
    * No transit in another country = less tired on your journey (especially if you need to take another 4 hour bus ride after your flight)
    * Overnight flights from Brisbane so can sleep on plane
    * No limit on number of checked in luggage as long as it doesn't exceed your allowance
    * 10kg carry-on luggage allowance

    Negatives:
    * Food is not great
    * Seats are tiny, no leg room, isles are tiny (expected)
    * Delays of more than 1 hour especially when you've been awake the entire day (due to 11pm departure flights)
    * Booked 2 adult tickets on same itinerary - They separated our seats and made us pay $13 to sit next to each other
    * They seat you in bad spots on the plane then take cash to upgrade to different seats - card not accepted (is your cash going to the attendants?)
    * Non-existent service (expected)
    * They take your water bottle at SGN airport at the gate waiting area so you will need to buy water there or on the plane. To avoid this, empty your water bottle before they check your bags for the 2nd time (unsure if it is at the request of the airline or the airport)

Take home: Don't expect much and you'll be fine.

  • +2

Known in Vietnam as ‘the delayed airline’. If things go wrong there is little help in customer service and I found they purposely avoid responsibility.

  • Nah thanks! Worst airlines and 100% delay
