I ordered one of these the other day and was impressed by how quiet and small they are.
It is my intention to try and get Frigate and Home Assistant running on one of these.

My observations:

  1. The PC is very near silent when going through setup, the fan became audible when Windows was applying updates etc (but still commendably quiet for such a small PC).
  2. Arrived quickly and well packed.
  3. Australian power adapter plug.
  4. HDMI cable included.
  5. Windows 11 Pro included
  6. HDD read speed around 850MB/s on crystal disk mark.
  7. Intel N150 CPU should be power efficient, hopefully will work with my cameras to replace my NVR.
  8. Dual LAN hopefully will allow me to have one port going to a separate LAN using a PoE switch for the cameras, the other port for my regular LAN.
  9. Hoping the WiFi 5 card can be removed (it appears to be M.2 in the listing photos), then an M.2 coral card can be added if required for Frigate NVR object identification.

  • 12GB RAM, that’s a bit low isn’t it

    • +2

It depends what you want to do with it - for me it seems okay.
I do not think it is expandable with such a small form factor though.

        • +14

Plenty of RAM if you're running something other than a bloated OS. Which is clearly what a form factor like this is designed for.

          • +2

@rumblytangara: Yep. Debian running sonarr, radarr, sabnzbd, nzbhydra, Jackett, prowlarr, overseer, a desktop, TeamViewer, and a browser with a few tabs open : 3.8gb used

    • +2

N150 is pretty meh for anything other than a headless server, in which case 12gb might be fine.

    • +16

It's actually too much. The sweet spot is 8GB - just enough to run, but not enough to stop us from complaining

    • +3

It is a significantly more powerful PC, but less efficient than the N150 for some tasks, is larger, likely noisier, and consume more power.

  • +2

    2x 1gbe NIC is nice for a proxmox/opnsense combo

Plus a few other services - home assistant, jellyfin, dockers

    • I've said it before and I'll say it again.

      This….

But my flavour is xcp-ng or VMware (now that it is free again)
      For type 0 hypervisor.

      And pfsense.

      But much to a muchness.

The type 0 should be "slightly" lighter as it requires no os to be running, leaving more resources for the VM's ie, you may be about to get one more vm out of your host….

At the expense of proxmox wide spread use.

    • +1

Do you know if they are intel nics?

  • +1

Stupid question, what do people normally use of a mini PC like this?

    • +11

A lot of Plex kind of users I think.

I personally use them on film productions. They’re fantastic to tuck behind TVs/monitors/electronic billboards and project whatever’s needed for a scene. On sci-fi shows there could be 30 of these hidden on any given set 👌

      • nice, is it too much to ask which productions you've worked on please?

        • +2

A few too many to list. But most recently Monarch Season 2 :) we built some sets for that with a mindblowing amount of monitors, it’s gonna look very cool when it hits TV.

          • @Jake T: dude it's a shame I can only give you but one upvote! Loved Monarch S1, looking forward to S2. Had dreams of being in production in my younger years, but was sidetracked into I.T. instead. Keep living and following the dream. Ha ha. I wonder if one of the monitors in the background will have MAME running Galaga on it ;)

    • +5

Not a dumb question. Most folks use them for streaming (Netflix, Plex, etc.), but they’re also great for light work, old-school gaming, or messing around with home automation. Kinda like a tiny, all-purpose computer.

      • What’s the minimum to play games like Fortnite?

      • can firesticks do netflix / plex as well ?

        • I would hazard a guess they mean hosting a plex server, not using it to watch plex. Firesticks can definitely watch plex but I don't know of a way of hosting a plex server on one.

    • +3

I have one with 4x2.5 GbE ports that I use as a router (opnSense), works like a charm.

      • Just curious, you running opnsense direct or proxmox?

        • +1

I used to run pfSense via proxmox but it's a bit more work and of course then you have two failure paths for something as important as internet.

So I now run opnsense direct which is very stable.

I have an Intel NUC (RIP) running proxmox with all the other stuff (e.g. jellyfin or home assistant) which is quite stable. The NUC is also much more powerful for things like video decoding. And of course taking it offline doesn't mean the internet is out…

          • @koyote: This is me exactly. Was trying to decide if I should remove the points of failure by running direct. Decision made, thank you.

      • +1

I have a similar N150 Pc with 4x2.5GbE - I'm using OpenWRT though. I only wanted a bufferbloat solution that would scale to 2.5GbE, and that seemed like the easiest way.

    • Not for playing Fortnite, from the looks of it https://youtu.be/7lvwB6M5N-c?t=591

    • I imagine a very large portion of folk use their pc for browsing, consuming media. Something like this is absolutely capable of that.

  • +6

I've been keeping an eye on Origimagic mini PCs ever since this deal and this is about the standard pricing for the C2. The discounts and/or coupons will end eventually only to be continued again in a slightly different manner a few days down the line.

    • Seems a bit expensive. The same config with 256GB SSD was going for $150 2 months ago

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/891657

      • That one was a price error

      • +1

yup.. price error for the win.. I bought one of those and use it running proxmox, pihole and home assistant.. haven't finalised my opnsense config as yet though to feel confident enough to roll it into production in my home network. I have an n5095 NAS and also the n100 mini pc which I've been using for general desktop duties for almost 2 years now (which also has 12GB DDR5 RAM).

        • wouldn't mind another price error…

          • +1

@impoze: yeah the pricing on mini PCs (which I keep an eye on) has gone up.. bloody trump's tariffs shouldn't be affecting Aus, but they are.

  • @repeat planning to use frigate with coral/hailo?

    • +1

This will be my first attempt at Frigate and HA, will try it with the iGPU to start with, and since it will be wired network I will order a coral M.2 if the performance is lacking.

      • +3

I have 2 cameras with motion detection + recording and just using the iGPU I'm sitting at 20% CPU utilisation (I'm running frigate + home assistant on a N100 mini PC)

        • Sounds good.
Can you share his much memory you have and also whether you have it running on bare metal, VM or docker?

      • +1

FYI the drivers for the m.2 haven't been updated by Google. There's some work to compile the update yourself.

        • Where is the best place to buy? The coral Mini PCIe Accelerator seems out of stock.

          • @OzzyBrak: I bought ages ago from eBay. No idea now.

          • @OzzyBrak: I was going to get one through RS, or go for the USB one on backorder (I think they'll ship around end of June)

            • @repeat: Found the dual m.2 here. Might have to go m.2 and try for an expansion card or something.

Does anyone know if any generic pcie to m.2 expansion card will work? The ones built for adding in extra nvme drives?

  • This overkill for Home Assistant over a Raspberry PI?

    • Definitely not overkill, it's ideal for Home Assistant or home lab use, and more flexible and versatile than the Raspberry Pi which is extremely overpriced.

    • If you're planning on using local voice processing, this might be a good option.

That said, much better deal a few days ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/907114

    • Great choice for home assistant with plenty of headroom and expandability.

    • I have an N150 mini pc and I run pihole, home assistant and will be running opnsense on it as well. The n100/N150 is more than capable.

  • Comparing this to the GMKTec G5 N97 ($249 in amazon). not sure which is better

Based on research (not my own testing) the N97 looks better as it has a more powerful iGPU. The N150 may (on paper) use less power when not under load but it's going to be a trivial amount in my opinion. Other than that both CPUs should perform about the same and both systems have DDR5 RAM.

Origimagic also have an N97 version but it uses DDR4 RAM so I would go with the GMKtec

Edit: actually I'm seeing conflicting info about whether the N97 has a better or the same iGPU. So maybe disregard.

    • +1

GMKTec G5 N97 is USB-C powered. It may make a difference if this one is not.

  • got one of them aliexp soyo n150 w 16gb of ram

And was really impressed with the speed actually ran youtube and heavy browsing completely fine plus the igpu seemed smoother than the i5-8500T mini pc.

Just this week I've learnt how to setup jellyfin on the i5-8500T mini pc but will definitely look to move it onto the soyo n150 pc! I'm sure the newer igpu etc will help w transcoding jellyfin content.

I got this for 239 few weeks back it appears to still be 239 with coupon. 16gb too.

https://amzn.asia/d/8gUGbWo (it's aus so not sure why it shows Asia.)

    • This looks like a good deal also, 16GB, expandable ram.

However also need to be aware these models have an integrated power supply which can add additional cooling load, and more difficult to replace.

Are they quiet? How have you found the sound level while using it?

  • Could you play a game like crusader kings 3 on this?

    • Look for youtube vids on N150 for benchmarks of similar games

      Eta prime or similar channels

      Yes

    • This should be a perfect replacement.

I've been using the intel n100 based mini pc (Lark X 2023) I'm using to reply to this for almost 2 years for my nightly web browsing, email, youtube (1440p) and usenet downloading.. it's more than capable.

FYI this person put together an amazing spreadsheet covering the mini pc world. https://www.reddit.com/r/MiniPCs/comments/1afzkt5/2024_gener…

  • +3

I've started using a n150 for work stuff and browsing emails etc (spreadsheets) and it's perfectly fast enough. It's on par as an i3 from 8 years ago.

If you need more performance, get one of those ryzen ones.

  • +2

I got a similar box, the Gmtek one, running proxmox on it with 3 containers so far and only using 2GB of RAM, lots of room to run more services. Was a huge learning experience but got everything to work eventually as I am running a router on there (openwrt) and also managed to pass through the internal wifi card to create an access point and attached a second USB AP as well.

  • How is it running Kodi to play back local 4K movies?

  • My regular PC is a GMKtec K2 Ryzen and the difference in sounds between the 2 is significant. The K2 is always making significant fan noise, while the C2 is so much more quiet.

Not sure if I would be able to use this with the apps I use more often such as Adobe Lightroom but running a near silent PC is underrated IMO.

  • Would this work well to connect to tv via HDMI and use Stremio?

    • That should be fine, not sure of a remote control solution though other than using a compact mouse/kb.

      • +1

I made a HDMI CEC to usb adapter for my mini pc I use running Libreelec (Kodi).

    • Absolutely

    • Yes it will, but you can also get USB sticks that will do that for half the cost.

However, you should check your TV (assuming you've got a smart one). Just realised they had the app already built in. Hadn't seen it before so not sure if it was added in an update or I just never noticed, but I can now run Stremio natively without the extra hassle of an external device.

      • Stremio runs on my fire stick fine, would do the same on a google TV stick
