do these need a subscription for all the camera features? or is it just the cloud storage. I have a cheapo amazon solar camera which works good except for alot of the features locked behind a sub….

    • +2

      i want to know too…..

    • +1

I went with Eufy battery cams, newer ones are solar. Great resolution & detection capabilities, all local storage on the separate Homebase DVR. Just added a hardwired E340 floodlight camera & it's outstanding. Stores on the Homebase or MicroSD. Pricier than Tapolink but has been very handy.

      • +2

        +1 for Eufy too

      • $350 for the e340, pretty expensive

        • +2

I paid RRP for these and they are worth it.

The motion detection is great, doubles for lighting and also has motion activated alarm mode.

Great for keeping and eye on one's property when away.

        • +1

Not really, considering what it does. Video quality is exceptional. Security gear is not something I skimp on, considering what it's protecting.

      • +1

I added an E340 floodlight cam to my existing Eufycams and upgraded to Homebase 3. I had nothing but problems with the E340, so I returned it to the retailer and exchanged it for the S340.
The S340 seemed to be functioning well until I noticed that it was completely missing events. For example, it would record a vehicle leaving my long driveway but there was no recording of the vehicle ever entering my driveway.
Eufy support confirmed that all of my settings were correct and asked me to upload recorded events to them. They concluded that the S340 was faulty and sent me a new one with no requirement to return the faulty one. So far, so good. :)

        • +1

Glad you got it sorted. I weighed up both, and as I have a longer driveway I opted for the E340 as it's long range image quality seemed better based on a few comparison videos I watched. So far, so good!

          • +2

@Captain Yobbo: I use both… I don't have a long driveway though but we wanted to have eyes all around our house.

The E340s are installed where prior light fittings were located and the S340 on the side of the house with no lighting wiring (and luckily ample sunlight all year round for solar charging).

I also have the eufy wall lights on both sides of the front fascade… just to look a bit more presentable than the floodlights. Coupled with two eufycam 3Cs covering off our side gate and the side to the front porch that the wall light there cannot see, and a C210 on our top front window sill looking at the front gate and section of the street in front of the house, we have the whole house covered off.

Performance wise, they've been good for most of the 6 months the whole system has been up. Only issues are the occasional detection issues that things the two lemon myrtles in my backyard are people (a problem when late at night and the alarm goes off) or when there's an update at a bad time and certain cameras aren't available. Apart from that, I've been happy with the setup.

Wouldn't use eufy for indoor monitoring though after that glitch a while back when other users would get your feeds.

      • How much typically sparky will charge to install the camera?

        • Assuming there's easy access & existing power supply it shouldn't take more than an hour. I paid $160 and my sparky was on site for about 40 minutes.

Works well locally with microsd. If you want save on cloud you need pay subscription. Only feature is lock is rich notification. Everything else is free ti use. Tapo product are great and reliable as compare to google nest and amazon echo product.

      • +1

I went with a NAS to save the recording. This way if the camera is destroyed (and the MicroSD is also destroyed) - the actual recording is still safe on the NAS.

        • and which camera can do that save to NAS ? this one tapo?

          • +9

@McMaferMur: Yes, you can feed any Tapo cam to a NAS NVR like Frigate or blue iris using the RTSP/ONVIF stream.

            No subscription required

            • @impoze: thanks for the info guys.

does that mean you need to connect the cam to the nas with cables? or can it still transfer data wirelessly?

            • +7

@impoze: Battery powered Tapo cams like this C410 do not support RTSP/ONVIF, even with the solar panel connected. Only their powered cams support RTSP/ONVIF.

Hey. I installed two of these for a family member. You do not need any subscription. It is for cloud storage only. The app stores data for a few days of recording. You do need Micro SD Cards for this to happen. A word of warning, you need the exact SD cards that are recommended by TAPO. we bought generic ones initially and they did not work at all. Here is the SD card list from TAPO: https://www.tp-link.com/au/support/faq/3048/

Really simple to setup, quality is pretty decent. The app connects solidly and notifications are instant. Coolest feature is the zoned area and sensitivity, so if you have a dog for example, you can set it so it won't detect the dog but will detect a human etc. Highly recommended.

@Josh086 thanks. may i ask - i read reviews on amazon saying there is a way to attach this using magnet - does it means i dont have to drill anytyhing if i can find a metal somewhere on my roof?

"The camera is good and has excellent features. However the double sided tape provided cannot hold the weight of the camera. Best to directly mount the camera using the magnetic mount."

or maybe that review is for different model…. hmmm

        • Could be for a different model.
This one did not have a magnetic mount. It comes with a full mounting kit that screws onto the side of the house facia.
We created our own metal bracket for the solar panel and just used the same nut and bolt out of the packet to secure it as we wanted the solar panel in a particular spot.
Both the Solar Panel and unit have seperate mounting brackets along with the single mount bracket that can contain the camera and solar panel as one. The unit also has an extension cable to the solar panel, so you can adapt it short or long depending on where you place it.
It was really easy to mount & install.

      • Another question mate,
For alerts and notifications do you need a subscription?
Also I'm assuming that you can remotely log into the camera in order to review the footage from outside your wifi network without a hub?

        • No subscription needed unless you want to pay for cloud storage. You can connect anywhere form the app and view the footage and live stream.
All alerts and notifications work without cloud storage or paying for a subscription.

        • you need to pay for media alerts, like where it sends a picture/video to your phone or google/hub alexa. If you don't pay you just get text alerts. Google hub etc still works but does not show you a picture/video

    • +1

Use a SD card. You need subscription to use Cloud storage.

    • +3

Just wanted to add to comments, you can also use the Tapo hub and have it working like the eufy. I have 2 hubs and 8 devices. Tapo works great for me. Detects well, all running off solar except my doorbell which i have a spare battery to switch out that stays plugged into a solar panel.

      • I have Tapo H200 hub but don't see this camera in supported devices.

        • +1

I have this too and there was an update a few months ago to support it. Latest version of the camera in post needs the latest firmware to support it.

      • So is the hub worth it? I can record the footage directly into the camera’s SD right?

        • Depends where you use it.

Direct to microsd means if someone steals/damages the camera, the footage is gone too.

The hub can have one micro sd card and link upto 4 devices.

Cons would be if the microsd or hub dies, so does your footage

        • The hub can work as an alarm/alert for when people are detected. I have it in a position/volume that people entering from the street can hear it, so if they're just a dumb opportunistic thief, maybe they'll go somewhere else. If they have real intention of robbing, I've seen video many times, they pull down their hoodie and keep going.

      • Thanks for the tip I have the doorbell and hub but didnt realise the c410 could be connected to the hub. Saved me from ordering 4 sd cards.👍

        • I think there's max 4 devices per hub. So you may need one more hub or use one with sd card

    • Just installed one of these, Almost all features are available even without a subscription. footage is stored locally and accessible offsite via internet.

    • I have the c100 and c210 and neither need a subscription. It's only for the cloud storage which is optional. It's say this is the same

    • If you do the maths and can combine with the above deal it will give you another 10% making it for $78-$7.80 =$70.20 so this may work out be a better deal

      • With link from Coles giftcards, I can't find The Good Guys on the list

    • +2

I thought the Amazon Link is only for the Camera only - no Solar Panel kit?
(or I'm not reading it right..)

      • +2

Checked it earlier on Amazon, selecting the C410 KIT (1pack+solar panel) option showed $77.99, it may have sold out as it now defaults to the C425 KIT instead.

  • Would the batteries last throughout winter with low sunlight?

    • Yes, they should. The cameras only come on when motion is detected, well you can set it that way.
They use hardly any power from what I could see.

    • Easily

  • They were this price recently on Amazon and price beat was like $71

  • If I was to do buy again , I would be looking for all of the features of this cam AND the ability to PTZ, so useful.

    • Which model with ptz? Thanks

  • +1

I passed on these and chose the 4 pack without panels which were cheaper because the tapo panels are theoretically weaker than those you get off eBay and the 4 pack plus 4 solar panels was equally as cheap, and then the sd cards… you still ended up at $400 so you could look at other Hubbed bundles for not much more… so it’s difficult.

    • +1

You got a link for the solar panel on Ebay you're talking about?

      • At $71 or $77 it keeps dropping… oh boy. But on the solar panel front my eufy system never died on third party panels.

Which are everywhere on eBay. These have a USB-C connection. But many will come with an adapter (just like the Bunnings Orion ones do too), check the listing.

As low as $19 each but they go in and out of stock and with that and the fact that I haven’t received my panels (I have the cameras but haven’t installed them yet either) I’m not going to vouch for a particular seller or item.

But the tapo panel says 2.5w and the eBay ones as much as you can trust them say 10w.

        • Could you please provide me a link

  • -1

Anyone can tell me what’s the commercial pricing

  • Is anyone able to tell me if there's any/much sensor to recording lag? I've got a few Reolink solar cams and there's about a 3 or 4 second delay between motion sensing and recording. Apparently the Eufys suffer from this too. Something to do with sleep modes and battery saving I'm told.

  • +2

I Think bunnings have the same thing, but now have it at $77.99

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/tp-link-tapo-2k-3mp-solar-powere…?

Looks the same to me, good find and less stuffing around. And sorry, mouse lagged and I accidentally negged ya, and can't undo :/

      • New mouse asap

        • +1

Logitech trackball, I think it has a bad IR illuminator for the sensor, strangely it's been getting better. I don't understand why you can't undo a neg though.

For relevance, the Bunnings deal is still ok for now.

  • Given that this camera matches eufy 2k and works without subscription, isn't this a much better deal than eufy given the price?

    • +1

eufy has smarter ai, less false detections, eufy activates faster, on activation eufy is better at keeping recording going if there is activity, many times with tplink even though there is still motion from a person it turns the video off. Nightvision is similar to eufy2

      • -1

I get the same false positives with Arlo, I had to cut and trim tree branches to prevent it from detecting them as person or animal.
Can you not set the recording duration when motion is detected?

  • Can you not set the recording duration when motion is detected?

I don't think so, it will record up to 2 minutes, but it's 'buffer' is only 10 seconds, so if the camera detects movement, but immediately can't detect movement afterwards the maximum time of recording will be about 10 seconds. My complaint is that there clearly is movement of either a person or car when the camera stops recording but the camera can no longer detect it. I am wondering if whatever turns the camera on must stay within the range of the IR sensor, if its out of that range, the camera can no longer detect movement. But I don't know that for certain.

  • Cheers for the discussion on the Tapo ecosystem especially the Tapo hub.

I use the Tapo C210 internal cameras but it's good to know that their external security cam products are getting quite good.

I may have to look into the Tapo doorbells… i have been waiting for a solar powered eufy doorbell but it ain't coming. I'd be happy with swapping around batteries on the Tapo

  • Just a heads up:
    - Camera only records when it detects motion
    - Motion detection is not very good to say the least
    - Maximum recording is just 2 minutes

Now, here is the trick! If you flip the camera upside motion detection becomes much better, but now all your videos are upside down. Battery doesn't last very long if you use this trick and turn motion detection to the max (~1 week).

  • how this compare to reolink argus 3 pro?

  • Anyone got this link to tapo hub h200?
