I recently learned that a return ticket is just a discounted purchase of 2 tickets, to be used by the same person on different days. Handy if you only get the bus in one direction, like I do.

    • +1

Doesn't even have to be the same person since it's a QR code

    • Why do you only get the bus in one direction?

      • +1

Work in CBD, go to airport straight from work. When I come back, I go home not via CBD.

        • Interesting thoughts for if I ever work at the airport

$31-$32 at Agoda year round (sometimes even cheaper), don't waste your time on the official website

    • +2

I normally use Agoda, Klook or Pelago but Agoda is showing $37.12 AUD right now - how did you get ~$31?

      • Oooh. I dunno. I just opened the page and that's the price for a return pass.

I'm logged in and on my usual browser.

        • +2

          I also get $37.12 AUD online @ Agoda, but $31.76 in-app ¯_(ツ)_/¯

        • all good, was just curious!

just checked my app as per @blam above and it's showing $20.50 USD which is approx $31 AUD, something's funky

      • also getting $37.12 on agoda

    • Same price at Pelago with 11% off code, for those who can't see the Agoda price.

better off taking uber if more than 1 people traveling

      • We know, or when it is on 3xSurge!

          • +9

            @MrZ: Tip? Yeah, nah.

          • -1

@MrZ: Go get a real job if you are not happy with what uber pays.

            This is not America

            • @dealman: What do you mean it's not America? Wouldn't it be worse there? Also thank you Selenium for the upvote!

              • @MrZ: In Australia we don't do tipping. So if you're not happy with what you're making absolutely quit and find better paying work.

Don't get passengers in your car lock them up and harass them for more money or tips.

                • @dealman: I don’t tip wait staff because they’re employees making at least award rates. If they’re being paid cash then certainly the tips aren’t going to them anyway.

I’ll tip Uber(Eats) drivers if they provide exceptional service.

No one cares, suck it up

      • +2

Melbourne Uber & Taxi drivers are among the worst people on Earth.

One trip with Uber that forecast 20 minutes took an hour and a half for someone to show up.

A taxi driver locked me in the back and tried to force me to pay cash, with mystery fees.

        Y'all are paid too much.

        • Why would you wait 1.5 hours for someone to show up? Why not just cancel the trip and rebook?

          • +2

            @MrZ: I did. Several times.

Among the worst people on Earth.

And that was one trip. Another trip was half an hour of an Indian driver going off about how much he hates Chinese people.

            • -2

@bootlace: Sorry you had to experience that. But we definitely are NOT paid too much lol

          • @MrZ: Huh 🤔

            • @life is suffering: ? Here's a breakdown of why airport trips suck: I get a pop up on my screen "30 minute trip to the airport" (if it's Didi, it will tell me how much I get paid, but Uber don't do this). You'd figure the pay would be decent, right? After I hop on Citylink I immediately get stung with $10.40 in tolls, so that comes out of my earnings. I'll probably get $35 for the trip, if it's 30 minutes, so that's $24.60 after tolls are deducted. I then have to drive all the way back to the city from the airport, and probably won't get a trip along the way. I can take Citylink back to the city, or go the toll free route which takes a lot longer, either option sucks. So after about an hour or so of driving, I'm left with $24.60. Take out GST and petrol, and that's about $20. That's not even factoring in vehicle depreciation, servicing, rego costs, and insurance costs. Let's say 50% of $24.60 = $12.30 remaining for 1 hour of work.

              • +2

@MrZ: I guess the solution would be not to be a uber driver lol.

              • +2

                @MrZ: Choose a new career.

              • +2

@MrZ: Doesn't the passenger pay for the tolls? On charged to them

    • I am going to Melbourne in July with my family (4 adults and 2 kids). Is Uber or taxi Maxi better from the airport to Southbank?

    Build a train line FFS.

    World's most liveable city?

    Bollocks.

    • I agree but it will be 16 -20 dollars airport access free + ticket cost like in Sydney

      • +1

The maximum you pay to go to Perth airport is five bucks - most people pay less and on Sunday's it's free.

        • +1

That's awesome (seriously). Funded by the odd shaped GST revenue split haggled out between State and Federal govt?

          • +1

@inamberclad: Probably. If the GST system wasn't such a mess, the carve out that WA has wouldn't be necessary, but it is. The WA government is rolling in money because the state exploits its resources on a massive scale. Victoria could be wealthier too but the government there refuses point-blank to exploit theirs. They prefer socialism, big government and ever increasing debt instead.

    • Many cities lack airport rail and get by fine. Auckland has no rail, for example. Most US cities too.

      • +2

Auckland is a horrible city and getting to the airport is a pain (well it was a few years ago anyway). In America, many people are happy to pay for a taxi/uber to the airport. Melbourne really should have a rail link to the airport.

        • A rail link to the airport only really caters to those who travel frequently. For the average person, who does maybe 1 flight per year, paying extra for a uber/taxi is really not an issue.

          • @MrZ: Using that logic, why does any city build a rail line to their airport? Everyone could just get a taxi/uber as they're only flying once a year. Perth had 2.3m people (probably a third of Melbourne's metro area) yet has an airport train - that's also part of the commuter network.

            • @R4: Maybe other airports around the world have more passenger traffic volume to justify the expense of a rail link. Perth's airport is half the distance from their CBD than Melb airport.

              • +5

                @MrZ: 2023 stats:
PER: 12m passengers - rail link.
BNE: 17m passengers - rail link.
MEL: 31m passengers - no rail link.

                Mmmmm

                • @R4: Did you miss the part where I said WA airport is much closer to CBD? QLD too.

                  • +3

@MrZ: I ignored that as it's irrelevant. Airports that I've been to that are far from their CBDs but have rail lines - Gatwick, Stansted, Munich, OR Tambo, Narita etc.

It's a non-issue. Victoria just needs to build the rail line and join the rest of the 1st World.

          • +1

@MrZ: Or if it's a planned trip on a budget, a train to broadmeadows then bus to the airport works to be just fine as well.

But I do look forward to Melbourne Airport Rail in 2030, probably because it's connected to the Metro Tunnel and I live in the southeast.

    • The best of Chicago $2.50 to the airport red line.

  • Just buy from agoda with 5% cashback from zip. No international transaction fee charged on my purchase yet.

I just bought from Pelago via shopback, 10% off welcome discount, 15% cashback which has tracked , brought it down to about $28 return. Sent ticket via email and WhatsApp pdf, so good . They had some 11% off promo on the website but it was finished already

  • Will the skybus go bust once the airport rail link goes live ?

    • +2

In 2056? Haha they have Geelong as well I guess

    • +1

They are probably holding up the build..

  • +2

I use train to Broadmeadows station them jump on the 901 bus, much cheaper.

    • Does the bus drop you right at the terminals? What;s the travel time?

      • +2

Bus comes into airport area, not far from where Skybus stops, time, cant remember, maybe 20-25 mins on train and 10-15 on the bus, 901s come every 10-15mins.

      • +2

Southern Cross Station to Broadmeadows on the Craigieburn line is 13 stops, taking a little under half an hour.

The 901 Melbourne Airport smartbus stop is located right next to the station. Frequency depends on weekday or weekend/public holiday and time of day, but roughly speaking every 15 minutes on weekdays and 30 minutes on weekends.

Broadmeadows Station to the airport is 10 stops, taking roughly 15 minutes. The bus stop is in the T4 car park at the southern end of the airport.

Depending on how long you have to wait for the train and the bus, the journey can be much longer than the Skybus, which is of course the trade-off for the cost saving.

        • Most people aren't going to Southern Cross so they'll be on public transport after the skybus regardless. Might as well just stay in the Myki network.

If you have some shopping to do you could also hop on the 902 to Airport West and then take the tram. In my experience the "next bus" is the fastest regardless of direction.

          • @[Deactivated]: People have different requirements and preferences (which can also vary between trips) so a blanket approach is not logical.

I use the public transport option more often, but it doesn't always make sense. My next trip will be Skybus + public transport due to timing.

      • I tried 900 then 901 bus through and through once from Clayton. It took me about three hours to get there.

Could be a serious trip on its own! Maybe try 901 bus from the start to end once in my life LOL

        • I have done 901 end to end once for lols as I was going to Frankston anyway.

I suppose it was also a way to see parts of Melbourne I'd never seen before.

      • Details in this deal, the only reason it has been marked expired is because myki prices have gone up slightly.

    • Can always take the 479 to Sunbury Station/Airport West depending on what way you're going too, it really is so much cheaper to get the public buses.

  • Thanks OP. Travelling to Melbourne in a fortnight and planned to take the SkyBus. Slightly cheaper fares now :)
