No you have to pay through credit/debit card for a subscription payment. This gift card is only to buy the likes of Xbox games, movies, tv shows and devices. It can be only used to purchase through the Microsoft store.

DOES NOT WORK! Do not buy Game Pass Core from Costco.
Game Pass Core codes don't work. I just bought a couple, and when trying to redeem it says "wrong region" even though my account is and has always been Australian.
And being a public holiday they aren't contactable on their helpline number.Now I have to waste my time calling them tomorrow to sort this rubbish out :(.

Are you sure that you haven't accidentally set your Microsoft account to the wrong region without realising it?.
Go to https://account.microsoft.com/profile/ and after signing in check that the "Country or region" is set to Australia and not some other country.
Definitely Australian. Just double checked, but I've never changed it.
Also when you go to redeem, the error message confirms wrong region, and then quotes the region your account is in. It's quotes Australia as the region.
