Suggestions for Electric Kettle

Hi all, I am looking to buy an electric kettle for household use.

My primary purpose is to warm up tap water for drinking in winter, won't be using for making tea or coffee etc. Kettle comes to mind but maybe an Instant Hot Water Dispenser will also do the job (Not sure on this)

My requirements are:

  • Capacity - Min. 1.7L or more
  • Temperature control - Variable and precise temperature control (Optional)
  • Water gauge - A visible water level indicator w/o having to open lid to check
  • Material: Stainless steel
  • Wide spout
  • Quiet Boil (to avoid noise during runs)
  • Quick Boil

Open to suggestions, some of the ones I did a quick google search on are:

Or do a "price beat" on the 7000 for temp control for $69
    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/philips-7000-series-kettle-bl…

Both your links are plastic for much more $$

    • The Philips 7000 sounds good with tempreature control as I would need warm water only and not boiled water. The Breville one says Stailness steel body - https://www.myer.com.au/p/breville-the-soft-top-luxe-kettle-… but does not have templreature control. Which is good, the Philips or the Breville ?

    • The bad lid release button is enough for me to return it. Is a bit of hit and miss when attempting to open

    steel inside.
Windows are common failure points - just give is a slosh to feel how much is in.

    • Windows are common failure points - Good Point to consider

      • For me window is not an issue. I bought this Kogan kettle when it's $29.99 and so far I'm happy with it. There is line inside the kettle which shows min & max, it's easy enough to follow that line. When the kettle is boiling the water, I do some other errands, I do not stand still to watch the kettle boiling. So, window is really pointless for me, but everyone has different preference I guess.

what distro do you recommend running on your kettle?

  • -3

    Don't you have HW taps?

    • The Breville one is not double wall (insulated), so the water will get cold easily, especially in winter. Although double wall will not retain the temperature for hours, it's handy to have insulated kettle for extra few minutes.

Apart from having 1.5L kogan kettle, I also use Tiger insulated flask/thermos of the same size 1.5L that I bought from Amazon.

    • I picked up the philips 7000 recently, I quite like it and the variable temp options work great. I don't love touch controls so maybe the 5000 series would have been a better fit for me, but that's personal preference

  • +5

Whatever kettle you buy, invest in quality 2L flask.

    • +1

We do that too. Boil the full kettle tip into a thermos and that covers the tea and instant coffee for the morning.

Open the lid after dinner and leave to cool overnight and it's into the kids drink bottles the next morning and start again.

Some much stress and mental energy just to buy a kettle. FFS

Can you help me choose the correct kind of glass to drink water from? It must hold water, must have a relatively flat base, preferably hold at least 200ml of water.

I know. I will ask about 22,000 people for their opinions because this is a really difficult decision for me to make.

Just use your unmetered gas cooktop. If you don't have an unmetered gas cooktop, then use your free local electric BBQ at your nearest park.

Wombat poop is cube-shaped. Scientists believe this helps with territorial marking. How is this relevant? It’s not. But then again, neither is half this thread.

Just buy one that boils water and doesn’t explode. Next question?

      Wombat poop makes scents. Cheers

    • Why would you boil tap water? He's drinking the same tepid water that started in his taps?

My primary purpose is to warm up tap water for drinking in winter.

Even a microwave on the right setting will deliver a consistent 'lukewarm' drink.

      • They are probably on rain / tank water and would like to ensure it's free of contaminants / nasties as a final measure.

    Avoid Plastic kettle….

    • Why? They are generally quieter and better when touched as they don't transfer the heat as well.

  • I am sure own brand K Mart or Big W will have some thing cheap….

    • +1

Highly recommend the Kmart home brand kettle. Doesn't go black inside. So much better compared to the Breville I had..

    • I ended up ordering a Kmart hot water dispenser over a kettle. Temp control, instant hot water and boil only what you need. Hanven't received it yet.

      https://www.kmart.com.au/product/digital-hot-water-dispenser…

      • Was reading the advertisement. They felt it necessary to point out that this wasn't a toy and do not let children play with it.

Perhaps the world wouldn't be so overpopulated if they stopped trying to circumvent Darwinism.

      • I have received the Kmart hot water dispenser and it is very good. No plastic taste. I have also measured the water temps. 99 degrees = 94, 85 degrees = 87, 65 degrees = 68, 45 degrees = 49. I think the top temperature will be higher during warmer months. Water volume was OK too, maybe about 5% over.

  • Dualit Classic Kettle (repairable). See:

  • Got myself one of these years ago. Super handy when bottle-feeding babies. https://www.ejoy.com.au/products/tiger-3l-tiger-electrical-w…. Still plugged in and used daily in this household.

  • I got the glass and stainless steel Kogan smart kettle couple of months back, its great so far.

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-17l-double-wall-smart-ket…

idk why they call it "smart" it doesn't have any "smart" features unless you count temp selection and auto shut-off as smart.

  • Instant hot water dispenser. I have the phillips ADD5910M/79. Got rid of the kettle. I like how it only heats up the water needed (kettle wastes a lot of energy) and only dispenses a set amount so I don't have to pour and measure.

    • Instant often means you get warm/hot water only, not boiled water.

      • Yes, the initial 15ml are cold, you either discard it or accept that your drink is 'only' 95 degrees.

    • Plus one, however I had a bad experience with Phillips. It was unrelated to specifically hot water, but made me question the overall quality.

I use Westinghouse 4L dispenser, it is old now and I forget the model. I think compared to Phillips one that we had briefly the hot water is hotter (we haven't measured though).

  • https://www.bigw.com.au/product/delonghi-icona-kettle-white-… $77, have it since almost 10 years now, not that quite though

Just get a microwave safe mug and nuke it for 30 seconds

This. If extreme energy efficiency is the goal you won't get much better than this (0.01kWh)

  • KitchenAid has a nice 1.7L kettle in lots of colours, but the $189 price isn't so nice.
    https://kitchenaid.com.au/products/1-7l-variable-temperature…

This is what we use because 1.2L is more than enough, and the top handle is more comfortable.

  • Definitely get a wireless one. They so hot right now.

  • +1

My primary purpose is to warm up tap water for drinking in winter

    Microwave oven.

And, as a bonus, when you aren't using it to quickly heat up a water, you can use it as a microwave oven.

That's how microwave ovens work. The microwave radiation vibrates the water molecules in whatever it is. So they work really well on actual water.

You want a cup of hot water, you just put a cup of water in the microwave. And you get exactly the amount of hot water you want.

    • +2

and what's the trick - heat a cup of water in the microwave, then add powdered instant coffee - and watch it explode ? (superheated water)

      • This sounds very American. I watched someone heat up a mug of water with a teabag in it in the microwave to make tea. Seemed like a rather odd way of doing it. Actually wondered if the little staple on the teabag would spark inside the microwave, but nothing exciting happened.

      • Unless you're a dill it doesn't take doing it many times to figure out how long to microwave a cup of water so that its hot, but it doesn't do that.

On hot days I put out dishes of water from a container in the fridge for my neighborhood magpies. On winter mornings I just put their breakfast and some water on the side in the microwave for 8 or 10 seconds.

        • If you've superheated your cup of liquid in the microwave, just pop a wooden skewer in before you add your coffee, or just use a wooden spoon.

People used to put live budgies in microwaves and turn it on and watch (:

  • Serious question, what temp are you wanting to drink water at?

Sydney does not get cold at all. I live in Canberra, and in winter the water straight out of the tap averages a moderate 8.0C. Which is fine with me. Keep a glass on my bedside table and refill it a couple of times a night.

  • We have a Smeg variable temp kettle. Does all the things you want but a bit pricey. Can turn off the boiled notification. Looks nice too.

This people in this country have lost their minds.

    • +1

I guess they justify it by comparing us to the USA.We used to have have a long way to go to catch up, now we're breathing down their neck.

      • fun fact: most Americans do not own electric kettles. They have 12 kitchen appliances you've barely heard of, but no kettle.

        • +1

Funner fact. There might be a phenomenon to explain the fun fact you mentioned

1 turkey = 1 brain, 2 turkeys = half a brain each,4 turkeys = quarter of a brain each. etc, The more turkeys the less% brain per turkey.

@Protractor: I try to like you , honestly. Give me a hand here?

Just pointing out that America is the only country whose national dish (in singles or flock) is smarter than the eater collective. We need & have much better role models, than what America has become. And you need to have LSD for blood to think they'll reverse out the cul de sac of Trump any time soon..Love or hate him, Turnbull is displaying more wisdom that our entire govt/opposition. Nobody seems to be listening,(much)

          • @Protractor: Funnest fact, it is hard to soar like an eagle when you are surrounded by turkeys!

  • Get a glass wall one so you can stare at it while it boils.

    • A watched kettle never boils. It becomes superheated, which is very dangerous.

    • +1

Interestingly, they've found a mirrored wall beside the lift results in fewer people unhappy about how long time it takes to arrive.

      • that is because they can check out the hot woman without directly staring.
and she is too engrossed by her own reflection to notice.

For those about to point out the flaw in my logic, ugly women do not frequent places that can afford mirrored lift lobbies.

  • Do you need advice on how to put on your jocks as well?

    • two legs at a time, just like everybody else.

    • Needs a thread to augment the shoes and socks one.

  • +2

Maybe you should consider an urn? Hot water urns aren't as uneconomical as you'd think as they only heat a small amount of water at once.

  • i am confused, do you want boiling water or warm water, surely you have a hot water system at your house?

    • +2

      I asked that a few days back,and I figure if they don't know,we can't help.

  • +1

Next post will be that the OP needs recommendations on a power board for the kettle

    • More likely, "how do I treat this third degree burn"?

  • Breville BKE700
Pours easily - excellent ergonomics, boils fast, built to last, on our second and will by again when this one wears out.

  • +1

Had a few Breville's in family, they seem to have a problem with overboiling after a while (i.e. they continue to boil non-stop).

Tried the new KitchenAid variable temp kettle, but it's not great. Slips on the counter, setting the temp is annoyed, and it's lid doesn't open wide enough when you put water in it. The old version seems great though!

  • We have a Xiaomi that we bought for ~100 CNY. Quality is ok i.e. redmi level, the case has a bit of plastic smell that lingers

  • I have recently got the Xiaomi you linked , and it ticks all the boxes for me (one piece steel inner, 4 preset temperatures, insulated, and less important, white exterior to match our other appliances :) ).

    Cons to consider -
-The two buttons arent in English, and are touch controls (slightly finicky)
-The default setting starts boiling the water once you replace it on the base. You need the app to turn that off, or to.choose other temperatures. I'm never going to need that.
-No warranty!! I've had it for a short time, I can't comment on durability. The electronics are on the part that goes to 100° and could cause it to fail. The new version has them on the base but it isn't one piece steel.

The Philips 7000 kettle comes closest I feel. Had I known about it, I would probably have bought that.

Firstly, what sort of psychopath drinks hot water straight up?

Secondly, it's just a kettle. It sounds like you know exactly what you want. Go buy one.

  • You can warm water with simply a fork in one hand and a mug in the other.
