        Whoops. Thanks!

    • -3

Theres a PS4 Pro ? Did not know that.

      • +4

yes there is a ps4 pro, what makes you say that though?, i cant see any mention of it in the description

        • +1

          mY BAD - I meant PS5.

        • -2

ps4 pro was an actual upgrade the ps5 pro not so much.

          • +2

@kungfuman: while that's true I regretted buying the PS4 Pro, mainly because unless you are a real graphics and performance guy most games are made to run properly on a normal PS4 anyway, so the pro is really for a niche group of people. The thing that made me realise the pro was not for me is when the PS5 was released, quite quickly new games became PS5 exclusive, so was locked out with the pro. Not dissing the pro, but just that it didn't add the extra value for me. Assume this will be the same for the PS5 pro.

            • +1

@justlookingaround: PS4 pro did enhance the performance of many many normal games. And the majority of later games were ps4 pro enhanced.

          • @kungfuman: I know you got begged but the ps4 pro didn't lose a disc drive as part of its big cost.. So you make a fair point. Sorry but digital games are expensive and you could lose use of your library.

    • +1

if only it came with a free disc drive and stand like the original did

    those prices are highhhhhh 🚬🚬

(for a 5 yr old console)

    lol

    • +21

Eh, $549/$629 actually seems pretty decent to me for what you get.

Even in 2020, when the PS4 already superceded and around 7+~ years old, there were deals posted here for $375 getting a reasonable amount of upvotes.

With the massive inflation/chipflation we've had over the last 5 years since COVID, $549 doesn't really seem that far off the mark to me for a under 5 year old current generation console.

          Good!

The first ever ps5 deal on ozb has the digital at 599

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/579703

This isn't a brilliant deal for an end of life console.

        • +14

End of life? This generation has 3 years left in it easily.

          • +11

@get-innocuous: PS5/ XSX generation is so confused, I feel.

On the one hand, Sony/ Microsoft are still stuck in wanting to milk the PS4/ Xbox One to death (since the user base is ma$$ive)

On the other hand, they keep drip feeding us 'next gen' games (those that are exclusive, push the PS5/ XSX hardware/ innovation and are non-online multiplayer focused) like a 150-year-old man trying to shoot a load. The load isn't constant enough, nor innovative enough for the gen it's on, nor is it original enough in content.

Personally, it's the most disappointing generation this PS5/ XSX is. The exclusives are barely a 2-handful on PS5.
It's improving, sure, but 'at the pace of the old man' above. (We're 5 years in already!)

            • +1

@YoursTruly: I don't think there are any games that demand really higher specs. I think there's a good 5 yrs left in PS5.

              • +1

@CptnObvious: I strongly agree that this will be one of the longest console generations I feel.

            • +2

@YoursTruly: It's the best generation so far in terms of user experience though. The jump from last gen to this gen was huge in regards to responsiveness and loading times, meaning that I game so much more than I used to because playing for 10-15 minutes is actually viable, which really wasn't the case for the last few gens.

          • +8

@get-innocuous: Maybe that's true. But is an 8% discount for a console 5 years after its release really worth it?

            • +6

              @BarneyKB:

But is an 8% discount for a console 5 years after its release really worth it?

What's the alternative? Just not purchase it out of spite even if you really want it?

        • +10

Yep, not to mention the ps plus subscription costs have killed my want for consoles for the most part.

          • +1

@AeymothSky: Is it basically a requirement to have one of these subscriptions these days?

            • -1

@jj8aus: If you want to play any games online you need an online subscription for Xbox or PS5. Not a requirement for offline singleplayer games but for anything that needs online interaction they sting ya.

            • +2

@jj8aus: For paid games with multiplayer yes.

              It definitively feels required.

For f2p games it's like what's the point, i can play those exact games on pc or anything else.

Like my ps5 (that i have two of) and series s is a glorified fortnite and occasionally rocket league machine.

But i have played cyberpunk on my ps5 singleplayer campaign tho.

Any singleplayer games is ok but i still personally feel like multiplayer should be free like in the ps3 days or at the very least be like $30 a year like Nintendo.

      • +18

End of 2019, PS4 was regularly 199. COVID jacked it back up, same as the others.

The price of the digital PS5 is 750 RRP now, the disc one launched for that, 5 years ago.

These prices are shit, and the sale price here is what the RRP should have been. Which would actually be in line with how the PS4 price went…

        • -2

          The ps4 had a rrp of $199?!

          • +2

            @AeymothSky:

            PS4 was regularly 199

Did you know that neither of the R's in RRP stands for regularly?

            • @TheDukeOfNukem: Ah missed it lol.

              Sale for $199 often then.

I remember seeing used ps4s for like $450 at ebgames or something during covid era probably.

I brought one used off marketplace around $150.

              • @AeymothSky: lmao I was literally editing my comment to say "know what, it's late in the night and I don't need to be a snotty (profanity) just for the lulz" but you beat me by a second before I could amend!

              • +1

@AeymothSky: But yeah. I sold my Pro around August 2019 because I hadn't used it in forever. Bought a new slim for 199 from Gamesmen (ended up getting it free too lol) in December the same year bc I missed Spider-Man. Was on sale around that price PLENTY of times at PLENTY of places.

I bought my first Xbox One in 2016 for around 250 at Big W with a few (Lego Movie, Minecraft, and a choice from four digital download code) games and an extra controller in a bundle thing not long after they announced back compat and lured me back. I don't remember what PS4 was around then, but when the PS4 Pro dropped, which wasn't that much later (2016/2017 from memory), that had the 550 RRP that PS4 launched with, meaning the PS4 was obviously a lower RRP, think around 399 but, again, my memory is pretty fuzzy.

                • @TheDukeOfNukem: Appreciate the comment that you were going to amend it haha.

And oh my I forgot the those consoles actually released ages ago.

I ended up jailbreaking my ps4 this year but after messing around with that haven't put much use to it 😂.

I brought that ps4 towards the end of my highschool because I was jealous a bunch of classmates had consoles even though I was a pc gamer. And never had the money for one until I made my own decisions and got one thinking it's a bargain at that price lol.

I got a series S for $300 to own a xbox item but it being discless is actually a big downside. Wanted aim to get one for a series x for $450 but I see there's no real point in doing that so I'm keeping that money that I would've spent on it for other things I guess.

That xbox bundle sounds pretty neat actually, so the games came with the console for around $250 total?!?!

If so that sounds sick, compared to what we have now.

$650+ console just to have it, then $90 subscription and then two games be like boom $180 etc.

                • @TheDukeOfNukem: I got an Xbox One around 2016…. paid around RRP. The free download token game I picked was Forza 6.

The GOOD thing about the purchase was the retailer at the time (they did this every few months after moving on to newer promotions) also gave other free game cards that they otherwise would have thrown out. So I also snagged Fifa, Gears of War UE, Forza 5, Tomb Raider and a few others (COD, Rare Replay etc)

        • Yep, it’s all these inflationary pressures (COVID, wars, TSMC jacking its prices up, etc.) that justified these price hikes, but I know these will stay for a LONG time.
This just accelerates the push to mobile gaming.

          • @FujinShu: Mobile gaming just isn't for me anymore.

I remember seeing some cool games come out but at this point I don't see myself playing mobile.

What games do you play on mobile ?

            • @AeymothSky: I don’t play any mobile games regularly as of now, but I did have an Apple Arcade subscription once and played a ton of mobile games through there.
You can also get mobile versions of PC and console games through your Netflix subscription, or you can sub to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to play Xbox games through the cloud.
And there’s also a TON of ad-free, high quality mobile games to play, such as Genshin Impact, Balatro and Vampire Survivors.
(EDIT: OK I lied about Vampire Survivors, but it’s technically ad-free if you either turn off your internet connection or purchase the no-ads option for the same price as the PC game.)

              • @FujinShu: Yeah that all sounds like hot ass 😂.

Cloud gaming I wouldn't exactly say is mobile gaming, in the sense mobile gaming as in it running off the hardware.

          • @FujinShu: The cure for high prices is higher prices, sadly

      • Amazon pre order for the PS5 disc worked out to be $650. So I guess a saving of $20 over 5 years.

    • +3

It's not exactly surprising considering price/performance for graphics cards (and to a lesser extent CPUs) has stalled for about 5 years.

It's still about $500 to get a PS5/Xbox Series X level of performance in a standalone GPU. Just the GPU.

Sony is increasing its prices in Europe, Australia and New Zealand to offset Trump's tariffs. I don't know why they think it's fair for Australians to pay more for a trade war started by Americans, but here we are.

Think Gamesmen had them for sub 600 last year. I'd bite the bullet when the disc hits sub 500. Might be waiting a while.

  • +8

The "Pro" Variant is such terrible value even at this price. Optical drive should have been mandatory for that price. Good thing is this isn't going to convince anyone who doesn't have a PS5 to make the jump. in the meantime Sony is losing money holding inventory and missing out on software sales for themselves and thier publishers. Its almost like they are wanting consumers to buy thier hardware at the end of the lifecycle

    • +5

Great comment and call out. I have a PS5 and 4090.ik a tech nerd and have my own little kids and little bit of income I can spend.

There's nothing about the pro which makes me want to upgrade. At all. Which isn't good, and likely means half the population don't care given I'm a lot more eager to part with cash than most (for gaming equipment).

No disc drive sealed the deal.. Cool specs but not enough to wow. If I don't have a PS5, I consider one for sure, but not without disc drive.

Look at AAA games on PC.. We all believed games would be cheaper with no drive.. But now we don't really own them, need to be online, need to download, and the big games are like 90-100 instead of 69/79 at JB hifi. The day consoles stop drives is the day I stop playing on console.

Now I know manufacturers don't care, it's SO MUCH more profitable going discless, and most younger people are just used to it..

Probably explains why despite the video game industry being so much bigger than it used to be, we get so little variety in games..

Enough ranting.. I just bought Cyberpunk 77.. Incredible game. I'm really surprised, for how much sledging it received.. It's fantastic.

      • +4

The value is awful but if you want the best possible playstation thats your only option.

You wouldnt be surprised if you know how CP77 released. Its come a long way.

      • +1

One thing i realised is i can actually burrow video game discs at the library.

Can't do that with my discless series s.

Can with my two base ps5s.

      • +1

There's nothing about the pro which makes me want to upgrade.

I don't think the Pro was intended for people who already own a PS5 (non-pro).

It was more to provide a fresh console mid-generation to those considering a PS but would like some extra performance and longer lifecycle.

Enough ranting.. I just bought Cyberpunk 77.. Incredible game. I'm really surprised, for how much sledging it received.. It's fantastic.

Cyberpunk when it was first released compared to what it is now are not the same game.

    • +4

not necessarily, the 2TB SSD is worth about $300 straight up, then you have almost twice the GPU compute units, 60 instead of 36 creating 16.7 Teraflops instead of 10.28, then you have slightly more ram plus it runs at faster bandwidth, in real world terms, basically it runs games in performance mode with comparable graphics to the base's fidelity mode, but with 60fps instead of 30fps, for many people, 60 is the minimum they like to play at, going from 60 back to 30 seems very jarring and jittery, each to their own though i guess, it depends what types of games people like to play

    • +3

      Ditto. I purchased PS3, PS4, PS4 pro, PS5 on launch day.

I had zero hesitation to pass on the PS5 pro when I found out it had negligible differences to the base PS5. I was ready to throw my money at it but for the first time in 16 years I couldn't justify it due to its poor value compared to the base PS5

  • Isn’t the VR2 normal price $649 now? It’s at that at JB currently.

  • +1

Oh man, is it time for a PS5 Pro? I'm getting pretty tempted TBH. I don't care for a disc drive because I only purchase digital.

    • +12

Check to see how many of the games you’re interested in are featured with “PS5 Pro Enhanced”. Only those games would really benefit from the Pro. Others really not a big difference. Price wise, to me, PS5 Pro isn’t really justified for the enhancement compared to the standard/slim. You’re pretty much at this point paying double but for selected games with better quality. The $500-ish more you pay could straight up be so many more games or years of Plus subscription.

      • +3

That's a good point, I didn't think of this at all. I really appreciate your advice

        • +3

It depends how you look at it, and what matters to you. If quantity of games is key, then stick with the regular PS5, it's fine. I too have gone all digital.

If you're chasing higher fidelity and better frame rates, get the Pro. I find the console is better at maintaining at least 40fps for my OLED screen, because dips to 30fps are really noticeable on it. Some games look and run better without any upgrade from the developer, while enhanced ones obviously benefit more, all new games will have a Pro mode. I personally bought it in anticipation of DS2 and GTA6.

      • Or throw that money towards another console

  • No price listed with dualsense Edge?

    • $249.

  • Xbox also on sale?

    • +1

Yeah - Series X is $724 (with a physical copy of COD Black Ops 6)

  • About time to get a new dual sense. Mine has stick drift

  • +1

Any idea if playstaion plus or gift card will be on special too?
