Wow even the Camo! Tempting, given that one of the joysticks is acting funny with the controller I have. It keeps moving to the left when it feels like it… Guessing a HW issue, Couldn't find a fix online.
Stick drift. Get a new one.
Or get the controller repaired by someone you know with soldering skills. I've repaired stick drift on these for friends for about $20.
I've heard Sony make it very hard to get the replacement stick. If that has changed then awesome.
@bboz: i do joystick replacements at my work, takes about 20 minutes on a good day
Disassembly Controller
Unsolder Vibration Motor Wires
Temperature controlled heat gun to remove faulty joystick
Use a Solder sucker to clear the holes in the pcb
install new joystick, solder back in place
install back in to controller and test connected to a pc - https://hardwaretester.com/gamepad
if all good reassemble (including solder back vibration motor wires)
i have found most people who have stick drift usually own more than one controller and rather pay $50 to fix their problem then by a new controller for double that
@vanyellow: to be fair, every time if i do a new repair or something it would take way longer than 20 mins.
@bboz: aliexpress
i just got a large batch of standard replacement joycons, i found tho most arent 100% dead center and i solder on a small calibration device called "drift fix"
when i runout of these i will be buying the hall effect models that arent hugely more expensive
@bboz: Aftermarket ones work well and are readily available for a couple of dollars, even for hall effect ones.
i could be a noob, but i struggled to use a solder sucker on these things. If you're a novice you will probably need a proper desoldering setup.
Anyone in Sydney who does soldering fix? I am interested to get my controller fixed.
@shivaussie: Yep I used a fellow on Facebook Marketplace who did 2 of my Dualsenses with the latest TMR style sticks (similar to hall affect but superior).
I’ve replaced one with stick drift and feels like my launch controller is just starting to do the same so grabbed one in anticipation. I’ve found Amazon to be better with returns than big w / jb.
Left stick?
Yep, left on both.
how hard was it to replace? do you have a youtube video you used that you can share?
@sleeperc3ll: Sorry, I meant I’ve replaced the whole controller not the stick. When I looked into it the part was hard to come by and tricky to replace
@Bargearse: Thanks for this. Got one.
For me, the left stick drifts left, but only after I flick it right. I notice it a little bit during gameplay, but it's very obvious when navigating the menu.
For the hell of it, I'm going to take apart my wonky one to see if I can clean in. If it works, I'll use it for the PC or Switch.
Oh boy, I used to get mine for $59 in 2023 and now $84 is a bargain.
Inflation
These are the least durable controllers ive ever used. I'm on #3 and i honestly rarely game. I wish there was a cheap/easy way to repair stick drift. The procedure on youtube looks way too tedious

Same with my Xbox X one.
100% agree, of the 5 I have bought since launch 3 are unusable
I got my PS5 on release day, my OG controller and the second additional controller I purchased on release day are still perfect…
My PS4 ones are flawless and still work perfectly. One of my PS5 ones got wonky after 2 years. I honestly still prefer the PS4 ones. Light, hardy, and the battery lasts longer.
You can use it for some games on the PS5. I don't see why it can't be used for all games, but just drop the advanced bits.
When I first got my PS5, I was so impressed by the dualsense. 3 years later, I already had two because of the stick drift issue. Did all the stuff online (prying it open and cleaning the contacts, blowing via compressed air, switching the old analogs with another dualsense, etc…) and they all didn't work. Great controller, shitty build quality and reliability.
Finally, I just bit the bullet and bought the dual sense edge during the BIG W sale (249 bucks) yesterday with my unused everyday wish cards to bring it to $110. At least I can just buy the stick modules now.
Bro the heck I paid $63 for a controller in 2022…

Crazy!! It's almost like the prices of tech have risen the past few years!
Not just the tech! Look at the groceries!

Is there a controller alternative that seamlessly works with PS5 that doesn't get stick drift so easily?
haha…. got my answer at least. Thank you
I was looking for a limited edition controller the other day.
Came across gamesmen listing, they seem to charge an extra $50 for a modded controller with hall effect thumbsticks.
https://www.gamesmen.com.au/search?q=DualSense+limited
I saw people on ebay selling modded ones too
Has anyone here replaced the sticks with a Hall effect joystick? Thinking about grabbing one and doing that to mine.
Big W link:
https://www.bigw.com.au/gaming/ps5/ps5-controllers/c/6412117…
Free delivery included. Useful for those who have access to discounted e-gift cards (4% in my case), etc.
Is there any shop that repairs stick drift for a reasonable price? For the effort required and not having all the equipment, im thinking just easier to replace whole controller. That way you have warranty and a new battery. My two controllers run out of juice in minutes after a full charge and I need to constantly have a powerbank charging it whilst im playing.
Is it backwards compatible with PS4?
Nope. But the other way around is, but only for PS4 games. Or something like that.
anyone got any deals on the superior control dualshock 4?
These things plug and play with Windows or any PC OS easily?
Yes and no. You can connect via Bluetooth, but you need something to map the buttons to Xbox controls. Steam does it natively, even with Switch controllers. I just launch my games from Steam. Even the non-Steam ones.
How come stick drift is so common on these controllers? I am playing with the PS4 ones for years and never had that problem
Same. The only thing wrong with mine right now is that charging is a bit flaky. Otherwise, they're fine. They're my favourite controller ever. But now I wish they had easily replaceable batteries like the Xbox ones.
Do I need another controller now ? NO
Will I buy one as a backup to the 4 I currently own (a replacement white controller from Telstra Rewards, Galactic Purple and 2x 30th anniversary controllers) ? PROBABLY!!
No Hall effect, no buy
just did a price match with JBHI. just the perfect time to get another $10 off from combank yello deal
I bought it two years ago for ~$60 but now it's up to $89 so I kind of understand that it's inflation.
Why is everyone so happy to fork out for new controllers all the time? What happened to good old consumer law? These things should last at least until they show obvious signs of wear and tear (previously matte plastic areas made shiny from significant use), or 3-4 years, whichever is longer. Never had this problem with any controllers of any generation until PS4 and PS5.
Mostly comes down to the effort factor I guess - people can't be bothered trying to deal with support/ACL threats/shipping etc and just tap 3 buttons and get a new one delivered on Amazon
Yeah lol. Folks be lazy. You could essentially go thru the inconvenience of making a complaint once, even if you have to escalate to fair trading (cost is $30 for small claims tribunal). Then you could basically present that outcome to retailers forevermore and they would honour it, or risk big fines by court for ignoring the precedent and then have to replace it for you anyway. ChatGPT makes these things a lottttt easier too!
Time is money these days. Yes you can use ACL, but could be hours or days on the phone not getting anywhere. Also some retailers are not helpful. Some decline to help some you have to push hard to managers. Too difficult.
$84 is not worth your time but then that's how Sony gets you with stick drift and speaker issues.
PS3 and ps4 controller never had these issues. Only ps5 is a design flaw 100%
Very good point and I will test this whenever my next xbox or playstation controller that I actually purchased from a retail store fails in some way. I know that EB and JB Hifi generally replace the controller on the spot (particularly if it fails within weeks/months). I would have tried to get a replacement for my last Xbox controller that failed several years ago… but as it had been a fair bit of time between purchasing and it failing… I didn't have proof of purchase any more :-/
I did try but struggled a lot with trying to claim warranty
Was $67 July 2023 how times have changed
From my Amazon purchase history:
12 Jul 2022 $63
7 June 2023 $67
8 August 2024 $67
So yeah $84 is around 25% - 33% increase.
Yet wages not grown that much. It's highway robbery
So last good price was actually Aug 2024 rofl
Awesome, thanks OP
