Price match (the OzBargainer way) at OW for more savings

First time poster here be gentle!

Woke up this morning to see a bunch of AirPods Max deals on the subreddit (US-based deals), so I did a quick search locally to see if there was anything worth grabbing in Australia.

Came across this deal on digiDIRECT for $755.98 excellent considering these rarely go on sale.
Surcharges: 0% bank deposit, 0.95% on card, PayPal, WeChatPay, AliPay & UnionPay payments.

Being a long-time lurker of OzBargain, I knew to then naturally push for a price beat at Officeworks. Took it in-store and they matched it without any drama (my backup was Amazon @ $815 to then get it for $782).

Walked away with a price-beat total of $718.15. Pretty sure this is an all-time low for the USB-C Midnight Black edition.

Other colours are available and some even marginally cheaper!

  • As an owner of the Lightning model. I would really weigh up whether these are right for you.

The audio quality is quite good but the noise cancellation is very last gen (these came out in 2020 and have had no updates other than USB-C and wired lossless support).

The case is an absolute joke and the battery life is only okay. They also cannot be used wired without an additional $65 cable. Thankfully they can be used while the battery is charging, unlike some other models.

Apple, once known for innovation and cutting edge technology, is pretty much a hype nowadays. Every year they would either update layout or add a button or change something minor on design. I’m an 100% confident that they’re other and way better headphone with fraction of price, out in the market.

PS - I’m a long time iPhone user.

would you be as salty if you had spacial audio?

      • I'm not salty, I honestly quite like the headphones, but I bought them shortly after release 😄

        They have spatial audio anyway

        • +2

usb-c version has spacial in an update, lightening was excluded

i reckon i'd be salty if i'd paid retail and i dint even get the update (tho i've little doubt they're a good headphone)

having said that, retail on these is insane imo

          • @0jay: That's spatial audio with head tracking, the Lightning ones have normal spatial audio. I don't care about it either way.

            • @deanylev: ok my mistake i misunderstood, soz

Spatial audio is rarely good IMO

        • yeh i have limited experience but it seems to be pretty subtle (tho not ungood).

ok for watching movies i reckon

@0jay: It makes most movies worse in my experience. Maybe if you don’t really care about audio and just want an overly surround sound experience that sacrifices many aspects of the audio, then it may suit. It’s like ANC, it butchers the sound for a feature.

            • @onlinepred: yeh i don't like any kind of noise control and have to admit my hd atv doesn't support the feature but the couple of times i used it on my macbook it seemed to be good.

i defer to your principled stance tho, it's in absolute sympathy with my general inclinations.

    • The noise cancelling is ranked among the best if not the best, even against the XM6s. What’s the basis of your negative comment on the noise cancellation?

I have the light blue lightning model, bought during the early days of Covid (all my colleagues got Bose, XMs, etc as well).
It's a comfortable pair of headphones - I don't know how, but my ears would sweat in them if I was on longer calls (bizzare feeling)
The main thing I would point out is the ear cup size/depth is better than other ones I tested/used.
Eg. The Sony XM3 - my ears would not have enough space in them (they would get sore quickly from being squished in them)
That did not happen for me in these (YMMV - everyone is different)
My 2 cents worth (personally I think this price is still high, as I bought from Harris Tech when they were sub-$600s)

    • think if i could afford a pair of these i'd pull the trigger for sure, for all the reasons you note above.

i've no idea if the sound compares with the competition in this price range (and at my age i may well not benefit from a better unit at all tbqh) but i've zero doubt they're well built, if a little on the heavy side.

there was a really dirty used pair going on market place for $50(!) and i thought i had my chance to try them out but as you'd expect someone jumped on them straight away
