  • Tempted but I remember that I have sold both of my Hd800 and Hd800s at mint condition a year ago.
Want to try it again but hardly used it while I was owning it.

    • Yeah I bought and sold my hd800 and hd800s too, and bought hd800s again, first one was made in Germany, current one made in Ireland if that matters to you.

Im keeping this one, as I probably buy it again if I sell it haha…

      • I have caved. Just bought it. Won't sell it again. Maybe.

      • How much did you get for HD800?

        • Not the original poster, I bought my HD800S for $1,400 when new.

        • I paid $1500 both times for my hd800s new, and bought the hd800 used for $750

          • @bruc3: I mean, when you sold HD800. I'm thinking to do the same lol

            • @sqheaven: Going rate for hd800 would be probably sub $750 i think.

        • Oh wow, times fly. I have just checked. I have sold my mint Hd800 in early 2022 for $1080.
The Hd800 high freq is a slightly more sharp but more dynamic, punchy, as compared to the Hd800s.

    • +1

Is there much difference in sound quality if comparing to other high end ones, like HiFiMan Ananda?

      • +1

        Huge difference.

    • Ditto.

    • I don't get it, or why OP replied with ditto.

what part of OP's posted deal was meant to be funny?? honest question..

      • +1

My comment was directed at edgarpopop who simply replied with the tired cliche of 'thanks bought six' or something along those lines.

        He later deleted his comment.

The headphone deal is a good one.

        • ok makes sense thanks. I was confused. I found the part to view what OP original posted but could not find any "joke".

  • how good are these

    • +1

They get mixed reviews. I'd say your best bet is to look for multiple reviews on youtube because one persons love could be anothers hate.

      • Aside from design flaws / obvious things, reviews are almost pointless. It's impossible to really graft someone else's reaction to that of your own senses.

Best bet is to listen to them yourself but that is easier said than done unless you're in melbourne or somewhere like that - and even then, it's hard to really instantly hear why headphones of this price are better to the tune of paying 5 times more than your basic "great" pair. They aren't 5 times better, they are a few percent, really - and that few percent will leave you smiling and surprised at times. If you listen to enough music, you will start to enjoy the presence of that few percent. In the case of hd800, it's the soundstage that is quite interesting. They are also extremely comfortable headphones.

Nobody I've ever given a listen to with hd800 has been blown away because they know they are expensive and they are expecting/hoping for something truly amazing that makes them seem irresistible and far beyond what they are used to but that's just a fantasy (at least, as far as I've gone which is only up to hd800, I've never tried the audeze or anything).

    • +2

Honestly, you need to try them first, do not buy a headphone this price blindly, it all comes down to your own personal preference.

I have bought and sold many, and honestly most people should not buy this, just spend max $300~ and get something like a HD600/6xx instead.

Anyway, if you are really keen on this, find a store you can sit down and audition for a good while first, if you buy blindly, very high chance you will be disappointed.

HD800S in general is known for its wide soundstage and highly detailed sound.

For this price range there are heaps of other options to consider too, look at stuff from Hifiman or even Focal.

They are…. weird. You NEED to try them before you buy. @bruc3 makes an amazing point 'don't buy headphones at this price blindly.'
i know in australia that is really hard to do, these in particular are a 'must.'

The bad: The sound. They are a traditional speaker design, so its impressive how bright their sound signature is. But unlike planar magnetics, it doesn't particularly sound clear (note/ instrument separation), leading them to sound muddy to my ear. They have zero bass.

The good: Design comfort, build quality… best in the business. these will last you a decade and just require new pads and then will last another.
The sound stage. These headphones are insane, its like you're in the room with the artists and can point out exactly where each one is standing.
      Best gaming headphones ever made.

Personally i would buy Hifiman arya's or focal clears over these any day of the week. In fact I went into the shop to buy a set of hd800s's and walked out with a set of Arya's. after trying them both.

This is seriously whacky. What is the 'traditional speaker design' here? They're not in a sealed or ported box with multiple drivers.

They are only bright because of their turning, not because they are a 'speaker design'.

They have seriously impressive bass for dynamic driver headphones, but overall they are still bright (which is why I sold mine).

Planars do not automatically sound clear- it's totally design dependent. I have planars that sound clear with great tactile bass, and planars that sound like muffled garbage. This is like saying that all diesel cars have wide turning circles. Does not compute.

        • You obviously understood what I meant, 'Dynamic drivers' you even state it in your comment.
your argument is simply to miss understand what I'm saying, deliberately.
It is a generalisation that Planar's sound clearer (see in my comment how I didn't specify a model…) the technology lends itself to very fine and precise movements of the diaphragm. Some shit products, (i'm looking at you audeze) that prove the rule wrong don't make it incorrect.

Do you have any real critique of my statements made about the hd800s?
like your statement "They have seriously impressive bass for dynamic driver headphones" makes me wonder if you've ever even heard them. The curve literally goes down in the low frequencies, no bump or anything, just falls off.

@jake93s: No, I didn't understand what you meant. What makes a whopping great speaker driver in a massive rigid case anything like a 20cm plastic film in a tiny plastic enclosure? And no, simply 'coils of wire' doesn't cut it.

I think you're confusing planars with electrostats.

With planars, I have great ones and shit ones. But the great ones still don't compare to the crazy clarity that the 800S had.

  • Do these make your ears orgasim 🤣

    • -1

      Whatever that is - doubtful.

      • It’s the new sim card from Vodafone

they can when paired with a tube amp.

    • +4

Look up the Sennheiser HE-1 price.

    • +2

Depends what you're into, people pay 5k on PC gaming setups, more on home theater setups etc.
You also want to pair higher end headphones like this with a decent DAC and amplifier which you can pretty easily spend 5-10 even 20+ k on.

      • -3

A 5k PC has noticeable differences. Does this in a blind test?

        • +2

          Yes.

If you can't pick the HD800s out in a 30 headphones "blind" test, you must be hearing impaired.

          Sound signature is THAT unique.

          • -1

@zeomega: You can also tell cheap headphones that are base boosted, it still doesn't mean it is good or worth :)

            • @Daffan: They have a positive characteristic that is highly identifiable. What's your next blather to avoid simply stating that you didn't actually know the answer to the question you were posing, thinking you had a point?

        • +1

A 5k PC has noticeable differences. Does this in a blind test?

          Yes. Very, very easily.

It's like asking if someone can tell chocolate vs vanilla ice cream blindfolded.

On the other hand, someone who just browses ozbargain and YouTube wouldn't be able to tell the different between a 1K and a 5K PC.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Better to remain silent than let the world know you're a fool.

          • @rumblytangara: Yeah but you just made up that scenario in your head to be bias off the bat about the 1k vs 5k PC.

            • @Daffan: What's your point? 95% of the adult population couldn't tell the difference between two PCs like that.

What differences would you notice and when would you notice them?

    • a lot of people have money to burn, and also have their own interest or hobby.

If it doesn't suit you, then don't spend money on it. Your money, your choice.

People choose to burn their own money on all sorts of things, you do you man.

    • And people pay 1M for cars too which is more than a house.

      Your point?

  • +2

Unfortunately, Needs a decimal place to be within my budget.

    • I feel you on that.

  • +1

I paired my HD800 with the HDVD800 and thought it would be very difficult to top. Probably time for me to dust them off and get some use out of them again.

  • +1

Good price, but TRY THEM before you buy. They are unlike any other headphone.
the sound is a personal preference… to say the least (its somehow painfully bright sounding, with zero bass, and yet somehow sounded muddy). HD800s are easily the best gaming headphones ever made, hands down (due to their sound stage).

    • +1

You thought the hd800S were too bright as well? Interesting. I have both the 800 and 800S and for sure the 800 are very bright with that sibilance but the HD800S don't seem overly so, in comparison.

Edit: apparently it's me, I must be a treble head.

      • I would love to try them back to back. there was a good 6 months between when I tried the '800' and then the '800s'
I've never wanted to like a headphone more than the hd800s's. I love how they look, and they're extremely comfortable. the brand was what introduced me to high end headphones with the hd650's and the ie80's.
Thats awesome they suit you, and your taste in music/ sound.

        • I actually think I liked the Focal Elears more than the HD800 that I had from that deal here way back when - but when the headband broke where it always breaks on Focals, I resolved to never buy a Focal headphone again :-/

I tried to resurrect them at christmas, installed a headband but the whole thing became insanely heavy and I ended up buying HD800S, shortly thereafter.

          • @f23lda: Why… why do they build the headband out of plastic. My clears also have a broken headband. I still use and love them but I too won't be buying Focal again anytime soon.
Recently bought into the deal on here for the Hifiman Arya's, as a replacement/ to accompany my Clears. But it arrived with one of its speakers dead.

I think I'm officially done buying headphones—between the cost and how unreliable they are, it's just not worth it. I already have a car hobby that's doing a great job of burning through all my money.

            • @jake93s: Hah, I can see we have common history.

I also have a wrx in my garage that needs the head done.

              • @f23lda: oh dear, thats not not good. if it helps any, i've done 3,000km's in my bmw in the past 18months and its broken down, then been fixed a total of 3 times. I'm running out of things to replace on it.

            • @jake93s:

Why… why do they build the headband out of plastic.

Are you talking about the Sennheisers? Practically all parts are available as replacements. Nowhere near as expensive as crazy Focal replacement prices.

I think my replacement HD650 cable was USD20 or so.

  • Get in, this deal comes every 12 months lol
