I know getting full Amex credit is the ozbargain way, but $500 for an extra 256gb of storage?

Bing rewards code only works on 512GB models

      • Ahh I see, mb. Wasn't sure of the specifics of that code.

  • How will you get $400 from amex? Doesn't that need 2 transactions of $800 each and not one of 1600.

2x$800 is not the same as one transaction of $1600

    • That's what I thought by reading the terms. Haven't purchased anything myself so can't confirm.

    • +2

It’s $200 per transaction. So it won’t work.

    • The $400 comes comes through on the one transaction over $1600. See the comments on https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/876287. You can always purchase 8x $100 gift cards if you want to be certain and then the rest on the same card.

      • I checked with amex chat and they said no, only $200, even if its split into two transactions.

To be fair, they aren't exactly the most knowledgeable at times … I'd rather go by first-hand experience from OzBargain members

Great laptops, finally a windows devices that comes close to Apples M chips

    • Unless you want to run software that requires x86. Like games, or VPN software, or streaming software, or some printers and USB sound cards, or virtualisation software… Just to start with.

If you only use Teams, Office, and a browser, go for it.

      • Unfortunately the.emulation also still needs a lot of work despite what some Snapdragon fans may tell you. I have applications not work, generate errors or produce incorrect data. When they work you can notice there is performance drop when comparing side by side to my non Snapdragon laptop.

      • I wonder if people that make comments like the above have actually used a Snapdragon windows laptop?

While some of the above points are valid (things with incompatible drivers) the software emulation for x64 apps has been perfect for me on my Lenovo Snapdragon laptop. I can run things that I would have expected not to work, but they work fine.

Windows on ARM has come a long way and has run everything I have tried to run on it, so comments like this aren't going to help make it better. Spreads misinformation and would deter people from getting something that might actually be a good option for them.

Snapdragon fan above. Notice that they get easily offended when you state that there are still issues with the product and start negging anyone who has a different experience.

@shellshocked: Not a fanboy, just sharing my experience. Most people just say nothing works, rather than stating specifics. That is my issue.

Dude, I run IT for a 500-person SaaS company. Snapdragon laptops can’t run VMware Workstation, they can’t run VirtualBox, I’ve had to change the company to a new VPN provider, and we’ve just run out of Surface Laptop 6 units for the devs in Czechia so I’ve given in and approved Macs for the first time.

This isn’t “misinformation”. I want Windows on Arm to work for more things.

@spicygastropod: Thank you for sharing the specifics, my main issue is that most people generalise the things that don't work, this is helpful for those who may want to know what actually didn't work so they can make a more informed choice. This is more helpful than a general catchall of 'this and that' don't work.

      • -2

I'm guess you're new to IT?

        • -1

          Yeah, totes.

        • If that was directed at me, no I am not. Been in IT for over 20 years.

EDIT: for clarification I am not saying that everything works on the SD laptops. Everything I have tried has worked, but there are many known things that do not, it's just nice when people that have run into issues with specific software that they share that. Just helps people out when they might be on the fence but know that the specific thing they need is or is not one of the things that has issues.

    Snapdragon, meh

  • Can the code be applied to any other models like the Surface Pro?

    • Yes, I tried on the Surface Pro 13 inch 512Gb variant. Doesn't work on 256Gb or the new 12 inch models.

    Total cost maths is misleading
