    Making money from misery.

I originally made it for me during my own custody dispute, and thought other people need this, I can't afford to run the servers and the AI API calls for free…

The USD pricing indicates a product designed in the US.

What assurances are you providing that:

    1. It will meet the requirements of the Australian Family Law court?
    2. Usage will not breach Australian Family Law?
    • My immediate thoughts too.
      Better see a Lawyer first…
Making this a possible expensive mistake.

    • yes, I designed it with a worldwide audience in mind, hence USD.

      1) it is for logging incidents that happen so when you go to your lawyer, you have a clean easy to present timeline of events.
      2) no, because it doesn't give advice, the key thing is easily logging incidents. Hence the AI based transcription and logging with metadata around the event, people involved, places, timestamp and evidence

      • Reading your other comments, it appears that you have done this with the best of intentions.

Have you considered the privacy implications if malicious actors gained access to the data?
I would expect some of the data would be very personal.

The data used in the app could be used to determine child support payments. If data was lost, does this expose you to liability?

Are you exposing yourself to potential legal demands for information?
Is there the potential for you to be called into court as a witness?

Family law is highly emotive so I would be cautious.

        • Totally fair questions.

Yes, I’ve given a lot of thought to privacy and legal exposure. Here’s how I’m approaching it:

          1) Privacy & Security: All data is encrypted in transit and at rest (I outsource this to Clerk to make sure this is bulletproof). Users control their data — nothing is public or shared unless they export it themselves (e.g., to give to their lawyer). We don’t sell data, and access is locked behind modern authentication practices.
          2) Liability & Risk: The platform is strictly a tool for private personal record-keeping, not a source of legal advice or legal document creation. It’s no different than keeping a written diary or Google Doc, just structured and voice-enabled for ease. The same risks apply, but the benefits of having reliable, timestamped records outweigh the alternative (fragmented, lost, or deleted info).
          3) Court Involvement: We’ve designed Custody Companion to avoid inserting ourselves into legal matters. Users retain full control. We’re not a third party in proceedings and don’t make claims or decisions, it’s a personal tool, not a service provider to courts.

You’re right that family law is complex and emotional. That’s why I built this: to help people stay organised, not to replace lawyers. I always encourage people to get legal advice where needed and use Custody Companion to make that conversation more productive.

These are exactly the things I want to get right.

          • @thegarty: Hypothetical: The other party disputes the accuracy/reliability of your system.
Is there a risk you will find yourself in court defending the system?

Guess for those who need it…

Kind of impressed that you bought an 18 year old account just to waste it.

    • it's my account, I just have never used it, one of my mates said OzBargain is a great way to get some early traction and see if there is interest in the market

Far out… 2007 and first. Hmmmm. Haven't found a deal in 18years. Tough economy hey? Lmao

    • I've found deals, just never posted one

  • Hey all, I just wanted to clarify where this came from.

This isn’t some cash grab. I’m a separated parent myself, and like a lot of others, I’ve spent tens of thousands on legal fees over the years, often just to get basic information structured properly for court or lawyers. I letterally spent $10k over 2 days preparing my initial orders with a lawyer on a phone going through all the information like this…

I used to email myself notes. One of my mates had a spreadsheet. Another used a paper diary. None of it was ideal. You miss details. You forget timestamps. It’s a nightmare trying to piece it together later — especially when stress is high.

That’s why I built Custody Companion.
    So you can:

    • Dictate an incident log and have it automatically pull in the metadata (time, people, event type)
    • Attach documents or screenshots
    • And then export it all for your lawyer or affidavit prep, clean and ready to go

It’s not about replacing legal advice; it’s about making it easier to stay organised and protect yourself without scrambling through old texts and photos months later.

If it helps even one other parent avoid some of the stress I went through, it’s worth it.

    • I think it's a good app but can I suggest you pivot a little bit or add some features:

      • Calendar for tracking your nights to calculate Maintenance
      • Change requests to parenting nights approval
      • Yes, I am working on that. I decided to stop building features and start getting some traction, but this is an excellent idea (I want this myself).

      • also, I was thinking of adding an AI assisted Affidavit writer, also and AI assisted parenting plan (I already paid a fortune to lawyers to give me the templates), so I thought I could AI-afy it to make this stuff more accessible for parents going through this.

  • No lock-in — cancel anytime
    1) When you cancel, where does the data go?
    2) In what format (file types) do you allow to download the data?
    3) Is it possible organise the download data in a chronological order for future use?

Free options to consider might be Cozi Family Organizer with ads

Other paid options include OurFamilyWizard and TalkingParents

    • 1) I fully delete everything - all information in our Postgres Database, s3 storage, clerk authentication records and stripe details(credit cards, subscription info etc…)
      2) right now, it's CSV timelines, but I can add others if people are interested
      3) that's the whole point.

Great ideas! I was thinking of an ads based version, but I made it free to just use to log events manually (no AI recording as I get charged each time) … I currently limit it to 10 a month for free, but up for suggestions on a better way to do it. I wanted a way to allow all parents to at least use it, hopefully people see that value in the voice not taking features (that was a big thing for me personally)

      • Fully delete everything? Does this include removing data from backups?

If you have a customer in the EU or anyone mentioned has a link to the EU, this could expose you to the EU's General Data Protection Regulation. That is a cluster of headaches.

        • yeah good point, I am currently not running backups (been launched 2 days), but I will need to figure out a way to do that using railway

      • Thank you for the clarification. From your response to question 3, it seems a subscription is required even to access historical data stored in the system.

Most users would expect, much like with services such as Google Drive, Photos, or iCloud, that if they stop subscribing, their personal data would be downloadable, with a clear option to export their uploaded content.

What would be the response if the Google Photos say you're free to cancel but would delete your data without an option to download when you stop paying?

For example, if a parent begins using the software during a family dispute when their child is 1 year old and stops uploading new information after some time, they would still need to continue paying for the service until the child turns 18, just to retain access to the original data as a backup for potential future use.

Mate, I am not trying to annoy you, but you may need to think about above questions to enhance the appeal of your service.
I will consider all of the above factors before subscribing and uploading data to cloud platform including cloud drives, accounting, tax, or financial planning services.

I genuinely like to encourage local entrepreneurs and support innovation and stop reliance on products developed by companies with little or no morality. Xero is a good local example in the Accounting and Tax space

        • Thanks so much for the thoughtful message, and no stress at all, it’s a completely fair question.

Just to clarify: Custody Companion does not delete your data if you stop paying. In fact, we’ve built a free tier specifically so that users can continue to:

          • Access their full timeline of previously logged incidents
          • View all the original data and metadata they’ve entered
          • Add new incidents manually at any time

The paid plan unlocks premium features, like:

          • AI transcription (for voice notes)
          • Auto-tagging of people, places, and categories
            • fancy export tools and timeline visualisation
          • other experimental tools such as the parenting order wiozard etc…

But even if someone uses the paid features for a year and then cancels, everything stays saved and accessible — nothing gets locked away or removed (unless the user asks for it to be removed).

We agree with the principle that users should own their data. Like you said, a parent might stop using the app for a while and want to come back years later. That’s exactly why we’ve made sure nothing is deleted (again, unless asked), and users can always access their information at any time, even without a subscription.

Appreciate the support for local projects and your encouragement - it’s feedback like this that helps us build a better and more trustworthy product.
