  • Good way to pay energy bill

    • +1

      how?

    • Which card do you get for that?

      • +7

@Oh Daddy @FlyingPanda99 someone kindly pointed out in a previous deal that the Tech Head card could be used for utilities. I prepaid my water bill last time.

        • +1

          Council rates as well?

Does the purchase earn MR points?

Any fees associated if I pay the lot ($20 is just a bonus)?

          @WookieMonster - just a heads up

          • +9

@tunzafun001: Whether it would work on council rates will depend on the MCC assigned to the transaction. Considering councils are government entities, I would expect MCC 9399 (Government Services - Not Elsewhere Classified) to be used for such transactions, and I would expect such transactions to be declined by Special.

The fact that you could use the Tech Head gift card to pay for some utility bills (e.g. AGL, Origin Energy) speaks to the fact that the Tech Head gift card allows transactions using MCC 4900 (Utilities - Electric, Gas, Heating Oil, Sanitary, Water) for some weird reason. If you go through the previous Special / AMEX deal you will see a lot of comments from people being able to pay for utility bills using a Tech Head gift card. It apparently still works (as of writing this comment).

You do not pay any fees when purchasing Tech Head gift cards, but if the merchant surcharges for Mastercard payments, you will need to pay those when using Tech Head gift cards.

            • @WookieMonster: Cheers, the user above says they paid water?

            • @WookieMonster: Well, I recon you are on the money. Tried and failed with council rate - direct, via Postbillpay - 'failed - 05 - Do not honour', also via Paypal and lastly via Bpoint Pay over the phone. All got rejected.
Back to hoping another Coles Mastercard deal comes up for council rates.

              • @tunzafun001: @WookieMonster
Gahhhh.. left Ozbargain. 10 mins later the TCN Qantas giftcard deal pops up… Perfect for Council rates (I think) missed it.

            • @WookieMonster: Tech head stops working on paying my origin energy bill now, not sure if it’s special gc removed the merchant.

        • Wonderful! Just paid AGL.

        • +1

Thanks. Successfully used Tech Head to pay Synergy

          • @puffinfresh: Me too, 0.43% surcharge. $199.14 is amount before surcharge to ensure full $200 taken out.

    • Does Head Head still work for utilities?

    • I can't see how this would work? The drop down menu just lists some standard retailers.

Surely you need yours listed, ie AGL? etc.

I dont see an example of the cards layout?

Is it just a standard looking visa card with expiry/ ccv?

      • Yeah, it will show you a card number, expiry date, and CVC.

But it won't work with payment gateways enforcing 3DS, as there is no way to send or receive a verification code. Good thing is utilities payments are considered low risk and many don't bother implementing 3DS.

Just used Tech Head to pay Energy Australia, all good.

    • Yeah also use the Tech Head card to pay for my water

    • Thank you for the heads up. Used Tech Head to prepay water

  • +12

I usually get woolies card with this and buy TCN or Ultimate, these can be used to double dip.

    • Also works to top up Opal.

      • Can you top up Opal at all Woolworths stores? Any info on that? Thanks.

      • Woolworths allow you to use their own gift cards to purchase opal credit.

    • +1

always thought Woolies had blocked the purchase of any gift cards, when paying with a woolies gift card?

      • +3

Paying with these cards run via the EFTPOS system and doesn't classify as GC payment in the system

    • I know the Special wollies card is a mastercard but this no longer works for me to buy the WISH giftcard in store…. tried 2 shops recently.

      • Not sure about wish, but I picked up TCN gift cards earlier today.

        • Was spending the Special Woolies at self checkout. This is now showing the payment as "store card" from previously "master" before I believe.

    • So you use the Amex>special GC to the get the 10% off the Woolies card, then a discounted TCN/ultimate giftcard with the Special woolies card?
Can I ask where you get the discounted TCN/ultimate cards?
      Thankyou for the alpha.

      • Special GC> TCN at woolies

  • +2

    Woolworths gift cards!!!

    • Lack of Woolies deals to combine with. I have a $210.52 Woolies via Tech Head via Special GC still mostly unused.

  • +9

You could also get "Supermarket Slayer" if you don't want to be locked into Woolies

    • Can't see it on the app :O

      • It's under "Shopping" category on App (search doesn't find it for some reason)

        • Found it thanks. Yes it wasn't in search. Cheers

    • +3

I was going to get this instead of a Woolworths one, but when I went to check which retailers accepted the card, it comes up with no retailers.

      • +1

It does say 5000 retailers - I guess they didn't want to list every grocery store in Australia :)

I'm guessing they are only usable at the supermarket/grocy MCC code (5411) here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/mcc_list

    • +1

does it works for buying tcn card at coles?

      • No idea. Never tried these ones. I know the non-special "category choice" cards can be used to buy gift cards at Coles, though.

I'm think I'll try these ones and if I can't get gift cards at least I can get groceries.

      • I have used woolies card to buy ultimate and TCN.

      • Why not? Coles stopped picking on prepaid cards roughly a year ago. All valid v/m cards cards can be used to buy gift cards.

      • +4

Yep just bought tcn eftpos at coles with supermarket slayer

        • That means something!

    • Can this card be used at ALDI? I tried to check on the app but the page glitches when I try and search specific eligible stores

      • +4

That gift card should work at ALDI, because:

        • ALDI should be assigned MCC 5411 (Grocery Stores, Supermarkets). My past transactions at ALDI have been assigned that.

        • The wording on the Special website strongly suggests the only MCC that officially works on that gift card is MCC 5411.

Keep in mind that gift card is a prepaid Mastercard gift card, so it will incur the 0.5% surcharge ALDI applies to all Mastercard (and Visa) payments. If you want to avoid that surcharge, you could go to Coles and use the Supermarket Slayer gift card to purchase a TCN eftpos gift card with no purchase fee. If you use a TCN eftpos gift card at ALDI, it will incur no payment surcharge, as ALDI does not surcharge payments routed through the eftpos (SAV/CHQ) network. This will mean you have to carry a physical gift card around, so you should consider whether carrying around a physical gift card is worth avoiding the 0.5% surcharge for you.

I would not rely on the Special website for a list of retailers, because Special does not control the MCC assigned to a merchant. (In ALDI's case, this is something that should be controlled by CommBank, as CommBank operate ALDI's EFTPOS systems.) The MCC may change at any time without notice (although I would be surprised if ALDI in its current form one day ended up being assigned another MCC, as it is fundamentally a supermarket).

        • I suppose that card can be used for Asian Grocery store, same as Category Grocery Card

          • +2

            @jimwh: Probably.

Keep in mind that some Asian grocers (and other small supermarkets) may actually be categorised as MCC 5499 (Miscellaneous Food Stores - Convenience Stores, Markets, Specialty Stores). For example, I had a look at the MCC wiki and can see a report of Happigo Supermarket in NSW being assigned MCC 5499, not MCC 5411.

MCC 5499 is officially permitted on Category Choice Groceries gift cards, but may not be permitted on Special Supermarket Slayer gift cards. (It is hard to tell what is and is not permitted on each of Special's category gift cards, because Special is not transparent about this sort of stuff.)

    • Can anyone confirm when they use this at Coles or Aldi? I am wondering whether it’s just safer to buy the Woolies card.

      • +1

I tried at coles today and it worked

    • amazing find tysm

  • +2

    Good for Bunnings :)

  • Only main card received this offer.

  • +1

I assume $200 should be the gift card value to make the most of the discount?

  • +3

Not a fan of the app/website but hey third time getting Woolies gift cards for 10% off so not complaining.

  • +1

Can we use this to get Amazon gift cards? I think that might be a good option if not double dipping at Woolies etc, as it's pretty easy to get Woolworths gift cards at 3 or 4% discount anyway and also Ampol gift cards are regularly at 6% discount thru Shopback. 10% off Amazon is a rare beast. And easy to redeem.

    • yes last time i got tech head card and used it for buying a amazon gift card

    • +4

Pretty sure this got shut down during the last promo: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/903387

A few OzBargainers (eg FiDad) got in early last time and bought Amazon GCs before it was terminated.

      • oof, glad I saw this comment before buying one. Thanks!

        • Buy BigW gc, Mate. Then purchase Amazon gc from there.

          • +1

@yht: Your local BigW still stocks Amazon gc? Sadly, I feel like Amazon are phasing out the sale of their gift cards at supermarkets. Will go check the local BigW at lunch

            • +2

@ilubbargains: I spotted Amazon gift cards at a BIG W store yesterday.

The Amazon website also says that Amazon gift cards are stocked at BIG W.

Hopefully your nearby BIG W store has Amazon gift cards in stock.

              • +2

                @WookieMonster: Good to know, thanks!

Separate note, giftcards.com.au no longer sells Amazon GCs :(

                • +1

@ilubbargains: I think that happened a few weeks ago at the same time as Coles withdrew Amazon gift cards from sale (and appeared to replace them with TCN Bluey eftpos gift cards).

That may mark the end of 10% off Amazon gift card deals.

              • @WookieMonster: Wow. So Coles don’t sell Amazon gift cards anymore?

                • @cheap4321: Apparently so. I have not seen Amazon gift cards at a Coles supermarket for a few weeks now, and I have been to a few in that period.

If you think about it, that makes some sense, as Amazon is one of Coles' competitors in the grocery sector (at least for shelf-stable groceries).

                  • @WookieMonster: thanks for that. I just read the old thread and apparently I can't use the woolies card to buy gc at woolies anymore? I previously swapped the woolies special card for a wish gc as it gave me flexibility

          • @yht: Ah, I'm not after Amazon specifically though, it's just the easiest route for me to Google Play and Netflix gift cards.

      • Wow, great info, thanks for sharing.

    • +8

If you get a bit creative (and do not mind a little bit of legwork), you could get this to work.

For example, if you get an Aussie Explorer gift card, you could go in-store and purchase any gift card at any service station categorised as MCC 5541. The following should sell Amazon gift cards:

      • Shell Reddy/Coles Express (and you should be able to earn standard Flybuys points too)
      • Ampol Foodary (although this appears to be selected locations only)
      • EG Ampol
      • BP (although I think this is at selected locations only, as I doubt all independently-operated BP service stations sell gift cards)
      • United Petroleum
      • 7-Eleven (likely service stations only, as I am doubtful the Aussie Explorer gift card works at 7-Eleven convenience stores not selling fuel)

I think they are only sold in fixed smaller denominations (e.g. $50) at service stations.

      • +1

        Thanks Wookie. Good tips.

      • Hey Wookie, can I buy the Woolworths Special gift card and then use it to buy Vanilla Visa/Mastercard or TCN EFTPOS gift card?

        • +2

That worked for me about a month ago. I have no idea if it still works.

Btw, if you want a TCN eftpos gift card, you may be better off purchasing the Special Supermarket Slayer gift card and then using that at Coles to purchase a TCN eftpos gift card with $0 purchase fee.

      • So wouldn't it work with the Woolies one too? I remember it used to work, someone just asked me in another thread

        • The Woolworths Special gift card would most likely not work in this case, because I have not seen a Woolworths supermarket (or Woolworths Metro store) sell an Amazon gift card for a long time.

      • I've used Aussie Explorer without any problems at non-fuel 7-Eleven stores.

I've just tried to use Tech Head at AGL but payment failed.

  • How do you verify the wish card in apple wallet? Just saying waiting to be verified.

    • I didn't have any issues adding to my apple wallet after logging in through the app and clicking add to apple wallet.

      • It wanted to verify the card through the gift card app but when I clicked verify nothing happened.

I ended up adding the card manually and it verified by sending a code to my mobile number instead of the gift card app.

  • Nice. Getting the outdoors card for fuel.

    • Does that work at Ampol, eg ampol, shell and 7 eleven?

      • +2

        Yes. Even at Speedway

    • What's the actual name for the outdoors card?

  • +1

Just used my Woolies gift card I got from Westpac’s last time. Right timing.

  • +1

Must be like 20 steps before you can get to the card but I guess its worth it.

  • Got the fuel card. Thanks Op.
