I had 3x viofos hardwired with viofo hardwire kit cable, and all set at 12.2v, but 3 off them all flatted my battery in 3 cars multiple times, sadly.

    • +2

That’s strange, mum’s car got hk4 installed and my car got hk3, never had any problem though, is ur battery fairly new or old? I set my at 12.4, not trusting 12v, bit too low I think

      • Very strange. First time I thought maybe just bad kit, but all 3 cars… and they are all fairly new barriers, oldest one is a 2yo Panasonic battery.
Checked everything I couldn’t find any issues, only thing I can blame is the kit at this stage.

        • +2

I think depends on the mode as well, I use only low bitrate instead of continues recording, that might made the difference. And I always unplug the connector if car stationed for more than couple days just in case, as other times if it is driven everyday, no issue so far.

          • +1

@Cheryhello: Now I unplug them every time when I’m back to home.
Strange things are all these 3 cars had no issues at all for first 2 years, after 2 years then every car started showing the issue.
Only thing I can think of is the hardwire kit.

            • @Dan4113: That maybe the case 👍

              • +1

@Cheryhello: Is there an option to quickly turn off and on parking mode on these devices when hardwired? Eg. If I know I will be garaged.

                • +2

@spa: i purchased a usb switch and a usb adapter, placed them in the path of power to the dashcam. in situations where i need parking mode i let the switch on, otherwise manually switch it off.

                • +2

@spa: We have the a129 duo in the wife's car and if you hold down the left button for 3-5sec it turns the unit off. No need to worry about replugging in.

We do run ours off an cell link neo but when it's sitting in the garage at home no point letting it continue recording.

    • +1

I hardwired mine to a fuse that only powers when the car is on. I think that meant I couldnt do parking mode but eh. Anyway, that was my old car. Unsure what to do on my new car, might just get it professionally done.

      • Maybe have a check if VCC cable connected to a right fuse.

    • +1

I had wired the first version of Viofo on my previous car and it left my battery flat twice, did not go for Viofo again.

      • I thought it was only me, now I switch led 2 cars to 70mai and never had this issue any more.

      • Hard my one installed professionally 2 years ago and never let me down, parking mode running perfectly all the time. If U didn't go for viofo, what other alternative did ya go for as video quality on these are so good compared to few others I have tried in the past.

        • All 3 of mine first 2 years all worked perfectly fine, but normally after 2 years they started showing over draining my batteries.
Just purchased a new car last week, and I installed a 70mai a810 in the car, now just waiting for an extension cable to finish the rear camera.

    • +2

Most likely an install issue (unless you rarely drive the cars), personally run and installed hundreds of Viofo hardwired, that has not been the cause of a flat battery.

      • One car has not been driven that much, but I normally top up all my batteries every 6 weeks.
I don’t think install this is a hard work, and some special skill required.
A car manual with a multimeter is all you needed.

        • You sound like you know what you’re doing in terms of the hardwiring part. You’d have to be extremely unlucky to have three faulty hardwire kits.

Did you do any particular tests to pinpoint it was the dashcam overdrawing the battery?

Just randomly from the top of my head, Eg, checking voltage before you start the car and compare the voltage drop for when the dashcam was unplugged vs plugged in

          • -2

@idd: I haven’t done any further testing, but I’m confident the issue isn’t with the batteries. One of them was recently replaced under the dealership’s warranty, and the other is only about a year old, which I installed myself. I usually top up all the batteries every 6 to 8 weeks.
Both of these cars are parked on the street, so I’ve set the cutoff voltage to 12.2V to allow the dash cams to record as long as possible, especially since the batteries are still in good condition.
But around two years after installing the Viofo A129 Pros, I started noticing that they were draining the batteries flat, multiple times. So only thing I can blame would be those hardwired kits…

            • +2

@Dan4113: I’m not saying the batteries are the issue either, as you said they’re new.

The suggested test was moreso to just confirm/eliminate the dashcam being the issue, based on the voltage change with/without it, because there could be other factors.

    • +1

Sounds like a user error. Professionals hardwire hundreds of these a week and never have issues.

      • How many of your hundreds installed hardwires have been tested and had feedback over 2 years?
And I don’t think all “professionals installation” would all soldered with silicone filled heat shrink.
As I said, hardwire part is not a hard thing, find ACC VCC fuses is all you needed, “professionally install” a dashcam, maybe more leaned to run the cables, and this will be nothing to do with flat a battery

    • Is your vehicle hybrid?

      • Nope, only used 12v battery fuses

    • +1

same with me, so i sold mine. bought a different on amazon during the black friday sale.

    • +1

definitely not an install issue eg mine continuously reboots for 5-10 mins from start and then powers on. No amount of reset would help so Have ordered new power cable if that would solve the issue(checked car battery voltage is fine)
these devices do have problems, high picture quality at a low price does have a price after all in terms of overall QA.

    • 12.2v is probably too low!

      • The kit only has 4 settings. Highest is 12.4v, then 12.2v.

    • I buy the timed Garmin USB adapter that uses the ODB port. Zero mucking around with fuses and automatically shuts off after 10 min or 24 hours. Haven’t run down my battery yet.

    • OP says they checked everything so just in case it helps others:

Could do a parasitic draw test, using a multimeter in-line with the car battery.
(ie like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkzSub1dtNQ you can pull fuses and recheck for drain)

This should be able to determine when/how much it's leaking.

Perhaps measure volts at the car battery. If it's under the programmed shutoff Voltage, turn the car off.. see if the dashcam powers down.
(viofo's parking mode LED settings may help troubleshoot this).

I've tested them uninstalled from the car, using an adjustable buck converter, the viofos have always performed well for cutoff.

As for the OP.. i dunno, I'm confused too but hope these tips help others.

  • Can you replace A229 with A329 without altering the hardwiring?

    • +1

A329 using Ultra-Slim Coaxial Rear Cable, 229 using type-c cable, don’t think they are compatible

  • +1

    Page not found
Sorry, this page does not exist

    • Should be Viofo.com.au 😆

  • The A229 pro comes with a HK3-C or HK4 hard wiring kit. What is the difference?

    • +1

Their hardwire page got few images down the bottom showing the angle difference, u can check from there

      • thank you, didnt spot that.

  • Anyone know what's better out of the A229 pro and the A329? Specs look the same but there's $100+ difference in price.

    • -1

A329 has more features like Interior Camera capability and i think ability to connect external SSD for a 2tb recording capability.

      • -1

A229 Pro has interior camera capability in three channel.

A329 has support for 4TB SSD. though Samsung T7 t9 and SanDisk extreme SSD models though only. They also claimed support for portable SSDs in enclosures but had to remove that advertising when it was discovered it wasn't the case.

  • What could I use as an external power source for these?

    • +2

Car battery is the ideal external power source

      • Yeah, but known issues with battery drain when connecting it to a Hybrid Hyundai is making me steer clear.

        • You can use an external power adapter, yes. If you’re wary of running your battery down buy one of the timed ODB constant power USB adapters from Garmin - I used them in both our hybrid cars for years and they work without issue.

    • exploding powerbank

    • Dashcam battery packs.

  • VIOFO A139 PRO has been sold out for months why?

  • A119 or A119 mini?

    • +4

Mini is higher specd and using type-c , much better model but price wise is bit higher

    • Does A119 has wifi?

      • +1

Not on 119 v3, a119 mini 2 does have Wifi

        • +2

Missed the mini deal from aliexpress last week :( i thought mini would be a slimmed down version of the non mini, weird naming convention

  • Main link for A119v3 not working (404). Alternate link ok but gps logger not included in price.

    • Their description and bottom box content both says gps module included, might be it is their old ad image that wasn’t updated?

  • Just buy direct from Viofo instead of giving the reseller a cut. It's cheaper and I've had zero issues with the warranty claim process as it's all done in Australia. The prices on Viofo.com are generally cheaper, they also have many codes that bring it down another 10-20%.

    • +1

Last time I asked viofo China for GST invoice and they refused, that's why I am buying locally now for tax purposes. Sometimes aliexpress is cheaper as well, just upon checking I think viofo Au is doing a better price with this EOFY sale.

  • I bought from AliExpress the A229 and a HK4 hardwire kit, but I think using an OBD2 power port is just easier than messing about with the fuse box.

Except now I'm left with an extra HK4…

    • it isn’t that hard lol

      • +1

Depends on your car. This particular one needs to remove quite a few pieces of the driver dash trim…

  • Just need someone to hardwire these babies in EV without impacting the 12v battery

    • What EV do you have?

    • +3

Dashcams have been common for over a decade now, it makes you wonder why these aren't standard on all new cars these days.

  • +1

A129 pro Duo or A229 plus 2ch? Anyone have any advice on which is better? Both fall in the price point with the sale for me.

    • +2

I would say 229 plus as it is newer 🤠

    • A129 pro is not that good at low light, A229 pro is much better.

  • You guys really think parking mode is that useful, even if you can catch the car rego who hit yours, you think cops will care and give you their details for insurance claim?

    • +8

No but your insurance will waive the excess if you provide details.

    • We dont get the police to care about the hit, we get the police to have the report for excess waive as long as you have comprehensive insurance, if you don't, they you don't need to hardwire/turn on the parking mode

    • Without it my wife wouldn't have got the driver to contact her with his insurance details after the she took the footage to the police. He opened a toolbox on the back of his ute in coles carpark & the draw came out & hit her front rhs guard. The rear camera was what recorded his number plate when he drove up to park next to her.
1 week old car & dashcam was installed the day before ;-)

      • Which model dashcam did you get?

Sounds like a very useful one.

        • +1

Hers is a blackvue 970plus but has the same lenses as the 229 pro.

    • you think cops will care and give you their details for insurance claim?

It's not for the cops, it's for the insurance.

      • I know, but is only the rego number enough for a not at fault claim I mean? Most insurance companies required you to provide the other 'driver' details which you can only ask the cops to get it, I knew someone been thru this and cops refused to hand in personal details, then he still ended up at fault claim …

        • and cops refused to hand in personal details

The police won't give you the details directly as it would be a breach of privacy laws. But you can use it to put on the police report which the insurance companies can then pursue.

        • If you have a solicitor they can lodge a Form 1046 "Request for Information by Solicitor - Motor vehicle accident claims' form:

          https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/news-and-events/application…

"When to use this form: use this form for the limited application purpose noted below to obtain (1) the name
and address of the owner of a vehicle or its CTP insurer and/or (2) the address of a driver. In each case you must be able to correctly identify the vehicle or driver in question before your request can be considered"

Otherwise you have to lodge a GIPA Act Access Application:

          https://www.legalaid.nsw.gov.au/my-problem-is-about/my-car-o…

"If you were unable to obtain the other driver’s details, you can apply to Transport for NSW for that information under the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (GIPA Act).

Making an application under GIPA does not mean you will get access to information. The agency has to consider the relevant public interest considerations in favour and against releasing the information and will consult with the other party before making a decision to release any information."

  • +1

Rear camera for A129 Plus Duo had stopped working in less than year

    • Our rear still going strong by the first front died after 3yrs and the second after 2yrs. If the 3rd dies ill be changing models, only reason I haven't is running the rear camera was a pain.

  • +1

A229 Pro has had lots of overheating issues, buyer beware.

Also, A329 is not the latest and greatest, the A329S/T/WW is.

    • +1

oh shit, just bought a 229 pro

    • S/T/WW?

      • Um they're variants of the A329S, look it up.

    • Stick with A119 V1 and V2 never had issues pretty sure V3 is fine

      • V3 is fine.

A229 Pro: heat issues, now units completely failing

        A329: botched SSD support

A329S: just released, no idea if any issues.

  • +2

Came here thinking I was going to make an impulse purchase for my wife's car, but it sounds like even the basic model needs to be wired in and is also going to flatten my car battery…

    • If you simply just use cigarettes lighter to power up the camera, there’s nothing to worry about. Drain battery thing only happens when u using the hardwire kit, and proper use of the kit as we discussed could eliminate the problem to the minimum.

    • Have used a A129 Pro Duo in my car and installed it in my old man’s car via hardwiring.

Nil issues with car battery as the hardwire kit has a physical voltage switch that once the battery reaches a certain voltage will shut off the dashcam. It’s usually in stuff like 20-25% increments so you can make it so it only records while the cars battery is above 75% before switching off.

    • A dashcam that is hardwired correctly will not flatten your car battery (unless the car is not driven often).

    • All dashcams need to be wired in, they can't operate on hopes and dreams!

      • I just thinking of connecting it to the cigarette lighter :)

    • Use a Garmin USB ODB power adapter - it shuts off after 15 minutes or 24 hours. Works very well.

  • Ordered, thanks

  • Hv they fixed the issue with continuous recording despite being setup for motion detection during stationary (e..g. in a basement car park) on A119?

  • Any recommendations for installers in south east Melbourne? Looking at the A329 in an MY19 Skoda Kodiaq.

  • Which ones are compatible with a hybrid car?

Don't want to end up with a flat battery…

    • Nothing particular about a hybrid car makes it different, esp in terms of hardwiring - so any dashcam setup will work.

      • There are lots of posts across the internet which mention battery drain when hardwiring these to Hyuandai Hybrids.

        • I’m not aware - are these posts specifically related to dashcams?

Some Hyundai Hybrid’s use lithium-ion, a hardwired dashcam that is incorrectly configured will drain the battery.

    • +1

I have an A329 on both our hybrids without a problem. Power through OBD via timed adapter that shuts off after a set time.

  • Ah i thought the mini would be on sale but nope!
