Refund of US$452 (~A$686) for Eligible In-Warranty Pixel 6a @ Google

2410

A repeat of smudger's epic deal here, but for Pixel 6a.

Google are being evasive about who's eligible but you can check here. I was offered a US$452 refund. People will get different offers depending on if they're in/out of warranty.

Getting the refund involves the same process of creating a Payoneer account and waiting a couple of weeks.

Battery replacement capability (instead of providing a refund) is expected in Australia soon. Individual end users will have one year from the initial software release on July 8, 2025 to register and make a choice of one of the support options, which may vary by country of purchase, location, and warranty status. After July 8, 2026, these support options will no longer be available.

      • Just checked my bank and the money is already in. Did the process around 9am this morning. Amazing that this is all done so quickly given that it’s USD to AUD aswell. Notes though that Payoneer’s cx rate is not the best…

This is worst phone I've ever owned. Twice, the phone has corrupted itself and just kept constantly rebooting, requiring a full factory reset. The 1st time, I was pretty sure the phone felt warm, but didn't put much thought into it. 2nd time it happened, I did some digging and found the overheating issue. Unfortunately, my phone isn't eligible for this refund.

    • Yeah, as much as hate Apple for how overpriced / anti-user they are, I'm also totally over Pixels QA.

Least I can walk into a store with an iPhone if it's messing up

    • Yeahhhh my partner hatesssss her 6a. My 7 is mostly fine.

Hers is glitchy, battery is meh, reception sucks, it's slow. Bluetooth issues. Nfc/tap payment issues.

Not eligible either for anything unfortunately

    • +1

Interesting. My 6a has been the most stable and reliable phone I have ever owned. Never had to replace anything, no slow down (though i suspect that is about to happen due to throttling), none of the other issues being discused. It has just worked, whereas I have historically had to reset my phones once a year due to constant issues and bugs.

    • Why does this just sound like the nexus 5 all over again? LG's infamous bootloader corruption and the 808's infamous overheating issue.

      • God the Nexus 5x was such a great phone though.

        Decent camera, wonderful size, simple.

Unfortunately the refurb ones kept dying (wouldnt turn on / stuck at bootloader), then moved onto Pixel 2's but different issues (camera stops working, touchscreen)

My 6 keeps having connectivity issues, so went to go back to 4a but their latest update stuffed me

May as well go iPhone 13 / 16e at this point

Process seems easier than last time. 5 phones all approved.

I simply have no trust with google ever since they moved to the tensor cores. Are real time semi-accurate translation across all the major languages incredible? Yeah it is. Is it going to survive until I have the chance to use it? Well, that's a gamble I'm not willing to take.

$452 refund, wow! My pixel 6a is nearly 2 years old and still works perfectly well, so I'm a happy camper!

    • +4

      $452 USD!!!
I went from disappointed that my phone would lose battery life, to aimlessly checking OzBargain and finding that I'm being credited more in USD than I paid in AUD. This almost makes up for not investing in the housing market when I was 5.

    • Nice one - how long did it take them to nominate the refund?
It said 3 weeks to get back to us for the claim for us?

      • +1

Received mine already - took 30 mins before it was approved and then a few hours to land in my bank account. $674.23

My wife has been affected by this and got the email this morning, yet she was able to go into the Google Store and select to trade in her phone for a new 9A and be offered $300 for it. That would bring the price down to $549 as they are running EOFY sales that end tomorrow.

I am wondering whether it is possible to use the trade in along with the other options Google is offering to reduce the cost further.

Otherwise it would be a $150USD store credit or $100USD refund.

Either of those options don't equal the $300 trade in being offered via GStore. Despite the issue, she still wants another Pixel as she really enjoys the clean Android experience and hasn't had any issues with her 6A since getting it approx 3 years ago.

    • Thanks for letting us know that the trade in for the 9a is still up. Now I gotta decide whether to:

      • keep my perfectly fine but soon to be battery reduced 6a and get USD100, or
      • pay $549 to switch to the 9a

I might try getting the USD100 and then when I get the money, go for the trade in if I have enough time today.

    • +2

I reckon avoid the 9a… Uses the older modem. Worse cameras. P9 deals were decent during eofy, I'd probably just try sell or trade the 6a as is, and pay the extra for the 9 during sales. Which may also have run out sales as the 10 comes up.

      • Thanks for the input. I heard the 9a weren't great which is why I didn't jump on the trade in when I first heard about it.

      • Good logic and reasoning…..however this is the wife and so I am pushing brown stuff uphill to get either of those to apply in this instance.

"I like my 6A and would be happy to give the 9A a go, this is Google after all and surely they would have improved in 3 generations of phone"

        • Someone below posted that they got the USD100 then did the trade in so maybe give that a go if your wife really wants a new phone.

I might run my 6a to the ground just to see how long it can go. My OG Pixel still works except the battery is really bad. I keep it for the unlimited photo backups.

        • Found the optimist in the relationship huh? :P

  • Tempted to get a second hand phone if less than 2yrs since purchased

  • 100 here

  • US$100 here, thank you.

  • +8

Got the $452USD too… only paid $334AU for it in Nov 23 using some bonus Telstra points from another deal. This may be my most glorious bargain

    • +2

Agreed! Paid $379 for mine from JB Hi-fi in Aug 23 - so glad I'm still under warranty and get the full US$452. Thanks OP!

  • +3

I knew this was coming when they offered $300 for my Pixel 6a to buy a 9a. I ended up doing it and probably should have waited.

    • From what I have read on Reddit, the T&C's say you cannot use the store credit in conjunction with another Google promotion. So I don't know whether it is worth the risk to run the store credit option and then try the trade in option soon after.

The refund of $100USD takes a day or two from what I have read. The EOFY deals on Google end tomorrow so its sink or swim on a decision today I think.

      • Trade in should be separate, they give "store credit" in form of discount code, so you can't use 2 discount code in 1 order, but trade in is refund back to purchase card so it should be ok to stack

        • hmmm ok. May need to bite the bullet and give it a go when the wife gets home.

The one day she is in the office this week :o(

        • +1

Doesn't look like you can stack sadly

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16685424/redir

          • @jollster101: Mate, idk what to tell you, those doesn't stack because they are discount code. Trade in does not require discount code.

            • @chanhoz: What I referred to was getting a store credit from the $150USD option and then trying to stack that with the purchase of a 9A. I don't think that option works.

Agree that trade in is different and that gets refunded back to the source card that the new phone gets purchased with.

              Didn't mean to confuse.

              • +1

@jollster101: Just picked store credit and could use that towards a new Pixel 9a along with the trade in credit.. So it does seem like they stack.

                • @safetydan: Good outcome.

I decided to go with the refund and trade in, 50usd lost it seems, oh well.

      • +1

        Just purchased pixel 9a $849- $255($150usd) - $300 trade in for a pixel 6a. Out of pocket $294 going from 6a to 9a.
        Also got $100 store credit.

  • $100 USD but ill still take it especially since its a spare phone

  • Hopefully, we will se something for Pixel 8 Pro. Mine killed 3 Google Pixel Stand chargers 😎

  • I hope they do this for the pixel 7 (or even the 4XL, I think I still have that lying around somewhere)

  • Good deal. Wish I knew about this earlier when I had my device replaced under warranty for poor battery life.

  • Not eligible for purchase in September 2023 through Google Store

  • +2

No wonder they had a trade in promo for 6a only…

  • +2

Got my $100us. Which I wish I got store credit now. Plus I traded my 6a in on the Google store and got $300. Then I also got $125 store credit for a pixel 9a

So about $300 for 9a which could have been closer to $200 if I took store credit

    • Hold on, so you were able to take the refund and still traded in the 6A today?

  • +1

The IMEI (#) you entered is not eligible for a repair at no cost to you, cash payment, or Google Store hardware discount credit under the Pixel 6a Battery Performance Program.

    No email been received.

  • I cracked my 6a screen and cannot see a thing. Is there anyway I can find the IMEI? I threw the box out.

    • -3

      What did ChatGPT say?

    • You can log in to Google's Find My Device to view your phone's IMEI number. Just click the settings icon at the top left corner of the map.

    • USB-C monitor, even better if you have touchscreen one if other options dont work

      • yeah i think this person has the solution.

Use USB-C to plug ur phone to a TV. and then use your tv as the screen.

      • The Pixel 6a doesn't have video out so I don't think this will work. Unless you remotely control your phone from another device using an app.

    • +4

Should be printed on the SIM card tray.

    • +1

eject the sim tray, it has the IMEI on it.

    • Mines been sitting in a drawer with a cracked screen as well. Bought it in Apr 23 from JB. I'm eligible for $100. A bit annoying that I would have got the $500 if it had been a few months later, but it's a free $100, so can't complain.

I also should have got a refund for the Pixel 4a, but I tossed it out with a cracked screen about a month before I saw them offering refunds for that. That is even more annoying. It wasn't linked to my Google account, so I have no idea what the IMEI number was.

      • I bought mine in November 2023 and not eligible for anything

  • No love for pixel 6 pro? Got mine December 2021. Battery is pooped

  • +1

Thanks OP for bringing this to my attention. Got the email about the update but didn't notice the remedy section. Received the max refund, which was more USD than I paid AUD, so a nice refund for what has been a great phone.

  • If anyone want to stack with the $300 trade in offer on google store
They are giving 10% discount code if you subscribe to their mailing list, should bring down pixel 9a to ~$765
    https://store.google.com/magazine/google_store_promo_terms?h…

  • $100 USD for me

  • One phone eligible other one not. Did speak with Google Support they promised to email me in 48 hours on next steps

    • Would be keen to hear - one of mine also not eligible for some reason but the other is.

  • Worthless. I did the last one with my 7a, and waited weeks to be told I wasn't getting anything even though my IMEI was eligible.

  • Crazy thx my son got his 6a for free from Amazon uk now says he’s made $100 US

    • How?

      • It’s when they were on sale and came with some bonus earbuds. The phone arrived but never the earbuds so he contacted them through chat. They said they’ll refund the money and he asked if he had to return the phone. They said no you can keep it - crazy.

        • +2

Wow free phone and free money- winning!

        • I have had this with a soundbar and monitor. Also free sony headphones.

  • +3

I am selling a pixel 6a on marketplace and had two strange messages this morning asking for the IMEI number. Now I see why haha.

I'll be checking mine when I get home.

    • Probably others from here trying to make some quick $.

    7a 6a, but nothing for 7

Hi all, FYI, it appears that the store credit option doesn't work when then using it to purchase another phone from Google that is on sale.

This is what is on a Reddit thread - https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/1lq23ay/commen…

"Heads up that the coupon option doesn't stack with sales, it only applies to the full price of the item. I saw lots of people pissed off by this on the pixel 4a sub earlier this year"

"I just now tried to check out with a Pixel 9 in my cart and the $150 "Promo code doesn't apply."

Use this option at your own risk if you are thinking of going down this path.

There have been others on that thread who have experienced the same - https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/1lq23ay/commen…

always take cash if given the option… the old saying: KASH IS KING

    • I was able to use the store credit from this battery problem to buy a Pixel 9 Pro that is on sale (discounted by Google) and do a trade in as well.

      • How much did you get it for?

        • I paid $1144 for the 256GB Pixel 9 Pro.

If my Pixel 6a trade-in is accepted they will refund me $300

      • Is the store credit in the form of promo code?

        • Yes. It says you can only apply one promo code per order.

  • Damn I traded my 6a in when buying my 8

    • Do you still have the IMEI number written somewhere?

They didn't ask for the phone back.

      • Great idea, hmmm need to check!!

  • I got offered $100 USD. cross my fingers it comes.

  • I want a pixel 6 pro refund!

  • Any refund for Pixel 7s?

  • +4

Bought for $399AUD for the daughter in November 2023 - Deal

    Now getting $686AUD refunded.

Very nice, but a shame about her battery life next week. Oh, well. She'll just need to carry a power bank.

    • Sorry mine was from Google store

  • +1

No problems with the battery, but I don't do anything stressful with it. Got $100. 2 years & 3 month old pixel 6a phone. FYI, *#06# is for the keypad, if it brings up the normal keyboard it won't work.
This would be so much easier for them if they made a phone where you can change the battery easily, they would just need to send a battery to people.

  • Bought in Aug/2023 from play store, not eligible :(

    • I will check mine but most likely same as yours since bought it from Google store in Aug 2023 too.

    • I bought mine from JB in August 2023 and I'm not eligible either

      • That's when I bought mine and I got the full US$452 refund. I had to use the second IMEI sim number that appeared though, the first one wasn't linked to my account for whatever reason.

        • What do you mean second IMEI sim number? Doesn't every phone have one unique IMEI number?
